Jimmy Johnson's Cowboys lost to the Giants by an average of 16.8 points in their first four meetings after he replaced Tom Landry. That's why the Cowboys' 21-16 win over the defending Super Bowl champs on Sept. 30, 1991 should be considered a breakthrough day for the team of the '90s. Troy Aikman wasn't known for leading comebacks, but he engineered the game-winning 84-yard drive late in the fourth quarter. Aikman capped the drive with a 23-yard TD pass to Michael Irvin, who made up for dropping a pass on the drive's first play by dragging Giants CB Mark Collins the final three yards for the score. CB Ike Holt's interception with 1:11 remaining sealed the Cowboys' first win over the Giants since 1987. "This showed us we can beat anybody we play," LB Jack Del Rio said. "We can now play at that level. We're legitimate. We believe in each other." |

Hey! I remember that Linebacker- Jack Del Rio. That boy has done rather well for himself since '91... doncha know? However, I'll bet he suffers just a slight bit more pressure these days...

Nice comment from Del Rio, but little did he know that he and his fellow linebackers wouldn't record a single LB sack all year!
In comes Charles Haley. Guess what the first defensive play was of 1992? Linebacker sack on Mark Rypien. Any Cowboy trivia buffs know who the linebacker was without going to your tape collection?
That interception by Holt was the only good thing he did that day. Jeff Hostetler had like 9000 yards in that game.

Great game, it was a turning point for the team to get that win. They were 2-2 going in and that game was the start of a 3 game win streak.

Those were exciting times. Some of the games in '91 were more magical in a sense than their dominance in the '93 regular season -- it was all about What Could Become. Do other Cowboys fans wish this season was as exciting as '91 or '92 and think there are parallels? Something about having a special runningback and a quarterback with first-overall pedegree helped create that 'we could be this good!' atmosphere. Maybe that Romo was undrafted coupled with his decline in play late in the season and that horrible botched snap keep fans now from having those same otherworldly hopes.

The key word here was "they believed in each other". If the Cowboys this year can do that, despite the problems they are facing now with the injuries and suspension of Wilson, then it will be exciting and will get that feeling back from 1991 in that we can indeed go out there and kick some butt! !Go Cowboys!
