That's superstar columnist Jean-Jacques Taylor's advice. He's seen enough from Tony Romo in the first two games this season to know that it's time to get the franchise QB signed to a long-term extension. Romo's stats weren't nearly as gaudy as they were against the Giants, but in some ways his performance yesterday was more impressive. Romo had it easy in the season opener. He sat comfortably in the pocket and passed the ball to wide-open receivers. He made the most of it, throwing for 345 yards and four TDs on only 24 attempts. The Dolphins made Romo run for his life most of the afternoon. He did an excellent job of displaying his improvisational skills -- you're awfully elusive if an unblocked Jason Taylor can't get his hands on you -- while avoiding mistakes. And his stats (14 of 29 for 186 yards and two TDs) would have been better if T.O. didn't have a case of the dropsies that he blamed on the sun. But Romo recorded two very impressive stats despite struggling to get in a rhythm in Miami -- 37 points and one win. |

I'd tend to agree with JJT on this one. I don't know if I give him stratosphere-break-the-bank type of money but I definitely lock him up for 5 solid years and give him enough coin to keep that stupid grin on his face for the rest of his days.

by the way I missed the score by a point-- I had 37-19...and i tried telling anyone listening Green was washed up and mistake prone. Voila!!! Rick Goosbut needs a different job. He don't know football.. really his predictions are ignorant jokes....how about Roy!!! come everyone, where's the mockery??? silence is deafening>>>>>

Great article on Romo JJ, although I'd disagree that now is the time do do the deal. I would wait and see how he does against some real tests--our top divisional rivals--Eagles, and some other good teams. I still think the cowboys have much leverage in waiting to do the deal. Romo wants to be the Cowboys QB, Jerry wants to and will pay him later in the season, or shortly thereafter, there is still the risk of injury, and this gives Romo all the incentive in the world to have a great year. Maybe this is just my practical side shining through (cause I'd like to see romo get a good contract), but there is no business reason for the cowboys to do it now. Just my 2 cents.
You do a great job at what you do, and you've got one committed reader here....

Romo was indeed impressive against Miami,so also was the entire offense. Looks like everyone is stepping up and getting it done.

I wanted Jerry to give Schaub money plus when Houston's journeyman qb got his deal a while back. Too late, now, Jerry. You're going to have to give up BIG money. Really big money. Romo makes his OLine look better than it is. He makes average receivers like Crayton, Hurd, and TE Curtis look like they're way above average. Romo appears to be one of those extremely rare players who elevates the play (and worth) of the offensive team around him. This guy is not worth gold. He's worth platinum.

Don't forget the other big stat: 0 turnovers against a solid Dolphins D. I know 'Fins fans wish Trent Green could say the same.
Posted by Warden @ 8:45 AM Mon, Sep 17, 2007
In two games, Romo has led 14 scoring drives: 9 TDs and 5 FGs. That's not too bad. Sure Romo has the weapons, but he makes it all go. And the scrambling adds a new dimension. I'll state the obvious now: we got our guy in place at QB to lead us to the next level.

YES, Jerry must move now before that price tag gets even higher. But, I wonder if Jerry is waiting until after the Bears game, maybe that's his plan then IF Romo and company prove on Sunday night they are what they've shown thus far this season, THEN comes the big deal with the announcement and presser coming Monday before lunch is served.

As someone mentioned in a previous blog, we are 2-0 against two 0-2 teams. Granted, we BEAT them. But it is still early. Chicago should give us a test, actually the next 3 games.
You know, there aren't many QB's, even good ones that can put up over 30 points a game consistently. This season shouldn't fall on Romo's shoulders, and as was mentioned yesterday during the game, Romo hasn't even played a full season, yet, as far as games played.
Give him more chances to get his feet wet, please. I still wouldn't mention us with a superbowl this year until we get a few more games under our belts - c'mon guys, a little restraint?
Posted by wausroamer @ 9:17 AM Mon, Sep 17, 2007
One of Romo's most impressive plays was when he threw a laser to TO in the back of the end zone. Romo was running right and falling down.
The ball hit TO right in the chest. His body language after the play suggested he didn't see the ball, or was asleep.

I'd be willing to bet that if he and the Cowboys pull off another win next week against that Bears defense that a deal gets done quickly. Good game all around but I do have to say that it WOULD be nice to see Marcus Spears make a play...any play. He ran his mouth all offseason and so far he's done nothing.
Posted by Brad in Miami @ 9:22 AM Mon, Sep 17, 2007
Don't know where you're getting "running for his life most of the afternoon". There was more pressure than in the Giants game for sure, but Romo had all day to throw many many times.
Posted by Trey @ 9:25 AM Mon, Sep 17, 2007
I have to agree with that headline. Hey, I fully understood wanting to see how he responded after the season ending miscue. I also understood, wanting to see if those first five or six games was just the new guy the rest of the league didn't have tape on. Really, I get all of the reasons why it was smart for Jerry to hold his money in hand dangling it like a reward for training a puppy. However, if Jerry doesn't get a deal done soon... we may end up in a bidding war to keep him. I never ccompare players... I think it is an insult to those who have put up the numbers year after year. Watching that game yesterday though, I thought I was watching Favre during his youth. Romo is still learning, but heck, I think it will be a great ride for Cowboy fans. Jerry... SHOW HIM THE MONEY !!!
Posted by garbeau @ 9:52 AM Mon, Sep 17, 2007
agree that they should begin talks. but a realistic deal won't get cut until october as by then the bears and pats will have had a chance at him. so far this year, whose he beaten (that's any good)?
Posted by Rodney in Nashville @ 10:22 AM Mon, Sep 17, 2007
OK. Finally something that I can agree with JJT about.
Posted by Bill, Washington, DC @ 10:29 AM Mon, Sep 17, 2007
Yes, I agree. Romo is the real deal. We have 12 mil in cap space so getting a deal done should not be a problem. Lock this guy up, NOW!

Bads news out of Miami, Joey Porter was hospitalized, doctors plan surgery this morning to remove Marion Barbers footprint from Porters face. Its belived the injury happend when Barber ran over Porter and his big mouth in the 3rd quarter. more details to follow

Are some of you so convinced that he the the real deal after just two games?? Seriously?
I am not knocking him, trust me and I like him as a QB, because he is fearless and Jason G. will keep giving him extra reigns as long as he improves, but to say give him the money now is a little premature, don't you think?
It will be no earlier than mid-season before Jerry makes any decision, though talks will probably begin after the Patriot game depending on how he does.
These first two games are just that - the first two games. Lets wait until Sunday night is over, at least!!
Posted by Larry @ 11:34 AM Mon, Sep 17, 2007
Sign Romo, Make MB3 the starting back, replace Spears with Hatcher(cant do worse) and figure out why DeMarcus Ware has been a non-factor in the first two games.
Also wondering why our fullback cant catch a pass(dropped a pass on the same pattern two weeks in a row). Where are you sweet Lou?
I am Normally not a glass half-empty kind of guy but you have to address your shortcomings if you are going to be a super bowl team.
Posted by Joe @ 11:47 AM Mon, Sep 17, 2007
Jerry's not worried about the price tag going up. If he plays good all year then he'll get the money he deserves. Its good to let Romo play for that big contract all season. Jerry said recently with a smile to ask Troy if he got the money he wanted.
Posted by Tanner @ 11:50 AM Mon, Sep 17, 2007
Deal should be during bye week. Romo is the real deal.
Posted by dan @ 11:53 AM Mon, Sep 17, 2007
MARK you are correct, lets wait till romo has as much experience as MATT SCHAUB, idiot
Posted by mike @ 12:11 PM Mon, Sep 17, 2007
"Dan" man OTFLMAO !! that was great. Back on Romo, this kid can play, any doubts should be on the way out. With redball's history on the BOYZ, man can you imagine the possibilities we're talking here. He'd be best to wait cause there's big MONEY for him to make and if jerrah dont pay him now someone else will pay him later. Romo is definitely a QB you can build on.
Posted by will (nyc) @ 12:15 PM Mon, Sep 17, 2007
mark,
not sure if you've been paying attention, but he was on the roster and happened to make the pro bowl last year. so it's not just two games, it's ok, i know it was a long time ago.
Posted by dan @ 1:34 PM Mon, Sep 17, 2007
Mark, i bet you have mike vick on your fantasy team
Posted by dave j @ 2:03 PM Mon, Sep 17, 2007
This is one of the few times that Jerry the GM is doing the right thing by not digning him yet. This is the franchise QB we're talking about.
Romo has played well and if he signed today, he would be looking at $60 million. If he plays well all year and steps it up to become a true team leader on and off the field, he could be looking at even more. I promise you that if he steps it up, Jerry will be only too happy to pay him.
Posted by Mark @ 3:58 PM Mon, Sep 17, 2007
Dan, the names can stay in your classroom.
Shaub and Romo are too different people! Besides, if he should be signed now, why hasn't Jones made an offer??
Yes, I was paying attention. Were you guys? Had Donovan Mcnabb been healthy, would he have been there? I am not saying he is a bad quarterback, people! He hasn't played a full season! He wasn't drafted in the first round!
Jerry Jones must be as dumb as me - he hasn't signed him, yet. Or haven't you been paying attention... You guys don't put a lot of thought into what you say, but Jones will not part with the money unless he is absolutely sure.
I would ask you to explain that, but it would take intelligence and common sense and since you just throw the word 'idiot' out there, I assume you have neither.
Tell me something, Dan and Will, if it were your money, would you sign him? If you did, then you can just go root for Dan Snyder and the Redskins.
Dave J is thinking the right way! Thanks Dave. It isn't our money.
By the way, Romo played great both of these games. NO COMPLAINTS HERE!
Posted by Vaquero @ 4:37 PM Mon, Sep 17, 2007
Are you paying attention to what your writing dave j? "If Romo steps it up to become a true team leader"? Either you know very little about football or have never played it, but you don't get a response from a group of offensive players like we saw yesterday (Patrick showing his toughness after suffering laceration of finger, the Barbarian running over people, and the general play of "The Team")from a "non leader"! Too bad we can't find a way to get Tony to play some defense, or else our D would be tearing opposing offenses a new bodily orifice!
Tony has that fire inside him. He's not only fearless, but he is inteligent. He is the only QB who has played with T.O. who is smart enough to know how to handle the sensitive soul of this warrior. All the players around Tony believe in him! Let the Super Bowl and his Big Payday be the incentive all year long.
On to other topics,
Morsels for the mind:
* Can I get an A-men from all my Cowboy brethren out there for the fact that we didn't hire Turner as our head coach? Look what he's done to the best talent wise team in the NFL!I couldn't stand watching how weak he looked on that Charger sideline! What deficient body language that man has! Where is the leader??? And it showed out there against the Pats.Thank God for Coach Wade.
*Spears has not shown me enough on the field to justify what he stated in the offseason. I think it's time to give Hatcher more time out there. When we get Ellis back, even if it's only to rush the passer, everyone on the D-Line will get more pressure on the QB. Spencer is doing good, but needs more time to improve his reaction time.
* Can't wait to see Marc Colombo against the team that basically told him "Your carreer is over and don't let the door hit you in the back on your way out". He was very fired up yesterday, and I think he will have a monster day against the Bears! Now all we need is for him to put that fire into Davis, together they have the capability to become the best tandems in the league! If only Leonard Davis had the cojones of Romo! And speaking of Romo, he will want to shine in front of his home town of Burlington, Wisconsin. It's pretty close to Chicago.
* And so much for all that "tough talk" from Porter yesterday. You know, there is a saying here in Mexico that "A talker trips more easily than a crippled". The dogs with the loudest bark are usually not the most dangerous.I like that Barber, he's a real football player.
My prediction for Sunday: Cowboys 24 Bears 14
Go Cowboys!!!!!!!!

Go Cowboys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You know, people are taking this the wrong way. Way too emotional.
I haven't said that Romo wasn't the real deal. Not once. I wanted him to take over for Bledsoe long before the Giant's game. He has the qualities that a quarterback needs, and he is very confident and doesn't rattle easy.
What some of us are saying is that he is still relatively new, as far as playing. He has been in the league for a few years, yes, but hasn't played.
I can't believe you guys are so convinced that he his 'the guy' without much to go on. So we beat the Giants and the Dolphins. Both are 0-2. Is there anything wrong with waiting a few more games, and see some adversity, like getting our butts kicked by the Patriots and see how composed he is?
If you people will recall, he struggled those last games from last year. Does that make him a bad quarterback? No. Does that mean he isn't our quarterback? No. He wasn't the cause of our losses the last few games, but it showed how he composed himself in those situations.
You guys are so quick to spend Jerry Jones' money. I find it peculiar how Jerry Jones is where he is and so many people on here seem to know more than he does.
I hope Tony is the real deal, and we sign him. I like him. But not after two games.
I will go on record to say that all of you who are ready to sign his check will never be seen on here again if he faulters. I for one, will be the first one to congratulate him when he signs the largest contract in history.
Posted by Mr Rogers @ 10:33 PM Mon, Sep 17, 2007
To JJT and all bloggers that wish to spend JJ's money like a trophy wife: Why sign him now? IF Romo beats good teams like the Pats, Bears, IF he wins a couple of playoff wins, then try and sign him. If he won't sign, you franchise him, and keep him another year WITHOUT locking him up for 10-years.
Tony Romo is Jake Delhomme and Kurt Warner. He is NOT Manning or Brady, both of whom were winning games in their second year in the NFL. In Romo's second year, he was warming the bench for Testaverde and Henson. There's a reason.
He's played good against two bad defenses. People talk about drops, but defenders have dropped more picks. Romo is often accurate, but his soft throws may soon get TO and Witten killed. Ask them how their ribs feel.
Posted by Gary T. @ 12:07 AM Tue, Sep 18, 2007
Sign him Jerry. He's the Steve Nash of the NFL so...get er done.
