The Cowboys won't be the only team at Texas Stadium busting out a new, blitz-happy defensive scheme Sunday night. Hall of Fame scribe Rick "Goose" Gosselin writes that Romo will see a familiar, perhaps frightening game plan from the Giants, who hired ex-Eagles LB coach Steve Spagnuolo as their defensive coordinator. The last time Romo faced this defensive scheme, the Eagles undressed him in a 23-7 victory at Texas Stadium last December. Romo completed 14 of 29 passes for 142 yards, was sacked three times and intercepted twice. His 45.5 passer efficiency rating was his worst of a Pro Bowl season. Romo will see the same look Sunday in the opener against the Giants, but with different players providing the pressure. |

it's one thing to try and immitate what was successful for one team. it's another to be able to pull it off.
do the giants have what it takes to pull it off?

This would certainly be a gift to the Cowboys and Garrett. The Giants just do not have the personnel to be blitz happy on Sunday night, without Demps and Madison it'd be a huge mistake on their part. Of course, the Giants know what they will not have in the game which said they may feel their best option will be to throw everything at the o-line and Romo in hopes they won't have time to attack the depleted secondary with the deep stuff. Hmm, that being said, probably the same doggone thing Wade is thinking, so stating the obvious the team who will be able to attack the blitz most effectively will walk away with an easy victory. My two cents, worth less in Wade's eyes, attack the blitz with a healthy dose of Jones and MBIII, then hit them with the play fake on a skinny post to T.O., some seam routes to Witten, and while we're at it toss in a fly to Glenn for one of the TDs.

Several differences. First, that was last year. The Cowboys offensive line is better this year. Second, we're talking about the Giants here, not the Eagles. Third, we won't be running the Parcells dumbed down game plan where we play conservative and let the other team dominate us.
I hope that they blitz the whole game. Should be able to hang about 35 or 40 on them at least.

I have a feeling Romo will be much improved over last year. And he wasn't so bad last year ;)

Looks like a good night to pick-a-part the giants defense. Let'em come!
T.O. and Witten will have a big night.

Oh my god, the Eagles did something and it kind of worked, so it must be the greatest thing ever! Hey, Goose, how is red-shirt sensation Jeremy Bloom working out for the Eagles? Gosselin really has a lot of love for the Eagles. Come to think of it, most of the media does. But, after all, maybe it is all justified. After all, they've won a few Super Bowls, right?

The question becomes...do you want to blitz a team with TO on it? A 5 yard slant to him can turn into a 75 yard TD. I don't think the G-Men have what it takes in the secondary to be too aggressive.

if the giants think their corners and safeties are similar to eagles, then by all means try it.

I still believe the key of the game is with the Cowboys offense. If we can get the Giants to be 1-deminsional it will help out the defense. Anthony Spencer could take a lot of snaps knowing that the run isn't an option and the DB's can be a little more aggressive.
I'm also wondering if there's a sense that the Cowboys want Newman to last untill the Minnesota game. Their offense doesn't pose much a threat and the bye week is coming up. Do you think he may opt to have his plantar removed in that time span? Supposedly it's a 2-3 week recovery from that type of surgery.

I think this year's o-line will have something to say about that

Look, I'm a Giants fan and I KNOW my team stinks...but is there not even ONE of you who can read criticism of your team without acting like you already won the Super Bowl? Don't drink the Kool Aid yet.

Some of y'all are confusing the real thing with Madden or something. The talent level from the worst team in the NFL to the best team is only about a handful of players different. The Giants will come in here ready to kick butt. It doesn't matter what scheme they run. For the Cowboys to win, they're going to have to smash a few mouths. Can they do it? We'll see.

Yup! I tend to agree with 'Patrick'... if memory serves me correctly, have our heroes not had to scratch and claw for close victories out of the G-boys from New York City lately? It seems to me that, no matter by how many points we're "supposed to hang" on these guys, games against the Giants tend to be hard-fought encounters, and unfortunately, when they're "supposed" to go our way... somehow they don't. I expect this game will be another nail-biter, but our 'Boyz will prevail!

jailbird, what are you talking about? we're responding to the fact that the giants think they can run philly's scheme against the Cowboys successfully and that they are assuming it's a full-proof plan. how do you figure that we are responding to criticism of our team?
ps, we have won the sb already...5 times to be exact but that's not the issue here.

The Giants will be poised to stop the Cowboys run and force them to pass so that they can go after Romo. The Cowboys should be ready for that by not trying to run initially but throw several short and medium pass completions to move the ball down field. That will get the Giants out of the run prevention mode and then the Cowboys will be able to run and mix it up with passes, thereby keeping the Giants guessing. In my opinion, the Cowboys have always been more successful when they use the pass to set up the run and then mix it up with runs and passes to keep the defense off balance. The Cowboys should also be prepared to prevent the Giant's passing game initially. When a team knows what you're going to do initially, they can usually prevent it and take advantage of your efforts by countering them with something else that proves successful. The team that manages to do this usually puts itself in position to dictate what the opponent does.

Jailbird Doogie, I'm one. You think you got it bad? Try being a Cowboys fan, like me, saying let's put a hold on the Super Bowl talk. I mean, let's win the NFC East 1st, then win a playoff game before we start even thinking about the Super Bowl. Giants stink? Come on, Doogie. They might have some questions going into the season, but who doesn't? The Giants are a very good team. And for all of my Cowboys bretheren out there who have already put this game in the "W" column, our last regular season game we lost to the mighty Detroit Lions. Let's just hope that we play better Sunday night than we did then, or we will be the ones stinking up the place.

Don't you fans from other teams have a place to hang out other than here? I mean, really, you must not have lives. You would never catch me hanging out on another team's site.
I would assume until we prove anybody differently, teams will blitz us. It has worked in the past, but this is a new year...

Goose is giving irrelevant information. The Giants don't have Dawkins, Lito, or the Philly D-line. Dallas is going to try an run the ball on the Giants becasuse of the G-men's undersized D-line, and their CBs don't matchup well in man-to-man with our WRs. It's pick your poision for the Giants and Jason Garrett has seen it all, so when you see a blitz coming and T.O. in the slot watch the scoreboard light up.

Other than me, ALL of the posters in here are Dallas fans. It's just that some of them aren't wearing rose colored glasses.
Glad to see you Dallas fans are excited about the Denver Post (or was it the Rocky Mountain News?) reject Rick Gosselin. How's the reunion planning coming along? Is everyone on board? You know, TJ Simers, Rick Reilly, Adam Schefter, ...

You're right, Koch. We all forgot what a sports reporting Mecca the city of Denver has become. Exactly how deep is your inferiority complex, anyway?
