If Terry Glenn is out for a significant portion of the season, do the Cowboys look to make a trade for a receiver or see what's available on the street? Trades are tricky because teams generally don't like to give up draft picks. But for a team that expects to win now, as the Cowboys have stated, then they might have to give up some of the '07 picks. Not either of their two first-round picks, certainly, but it might have to be a first-day selection to get anybody good. I saw some reports earlier in camp that Miami's Chris Chambers might be available, but I don't see that happening. The Patriots have a plethora of receivers on their roster and the Joneses certainly get along with the Krafts. Maybe there's something there. If you're looking on the street, you've got guys like Reche Caldwell, who played for New England last year and helped beat Wade Phillips in the playoffs, Az Hakim and former Cowboys Quincy Morgan and Antonio Bryant. Whomever signs Bryant, however, has to have sit out a game because of an NFL suspension. Here's a name: Keenan McCardell. He's the ultimate professional. He can pick up a system quickly. |

hmmmm...no offense to Stanback, but maybe JJ should have picked a receiver within the first couple of rounds this year...
Posted by Tanner @ 9:33 AM Fri, Sep 07, 2007
Whenever I heard about the Glenn situation I immediately thought of Reche Caldwell. He's a guy who can be a good complement to T.O. as a number #2 and will allow Crayton to stay at #3 where he is at his best.
Posted by Timbo @ 9:34 AM Fri, Sep 07, 2007
So who returns punts if Crayton is the #2 receiver now for an extended time? I don't see the Cowboys using him as punt returner AND #2 receiver - too much risk. Is Stanback ready yet?
Posted by Timbo @ 9:40 AM Fri, Sep 07, 2007
If Cowboys do look for alternatives on the street or via trade, hopefully it will be a stretch-the-field receiver (eliminates McCardell) to open up the middle for Witten and T.O., and to keep teams honest at the corners and safeties - just like Glenn would have done. Plus, I don't see another deep threat in the line up other than Stanback, and I don't think he sees significant time yet. Your thoughts?
Posted by PaulC @ 9:43 AM Fri, Sep 07, 2007
Replace Glenn, our speed receiver, with slow-go Keenan McCardell? I don't think so. I don't see any good options out there. Might as well through Stanback out there and develop him fast. Maybe we'll have something by the end of the year. Searching for waiver wire retreads seems like a waste of time.
Posted by Mark @ 9:44 AM Fri, Sep 07, 2007
No, we have an abundance of good receivers on the team, not including Glenn or Owens. Or at least everyone seems to think they are. I believe they will get their chances this year. Glenn will not be back full steam this year. I don't think he will be here next year.
Time for the young guys to step up, or thumbing like Julius next year.
Posted by answer @ 9:44 AM Fri, Sep 07, 2007
I'll play. Go ahead and give Jerry my number. I'm ready coach!
Posted by Philip @ 9:46 AM Fri, Sep 07, 2007
Listen, Sam Hurd is going to be the next best wideout of the Cowboys. He has better speed and hands than Marques Colston, and he certainly has better concentration than Chris Chambers.
Look for him to be the breakout star of this year. Mark my words, if he starts by week 3, he's making the pro bowl.
He sure did handle himself against Arizona his first start and I'm excited to see what he can really do.
Posted by scott @ 9:47 AM Fri, Sep 07, 2007
Make a trade for a young receiver (starter).
Posted by Timothy @ 10:02 AM Fri, Sep 07, 2007
Dallas should not give up a draft pick for a receiver, you would not receive any value.
It's time for Patrick Crayton, Sam Hurd and Miles Austin to prove they are NFL caliber. An opportunity is there.
For two seasons we have heard and read how much these three have progressed, let's see.
Bottom line: The Dallas Cowboys rolled the dice they were covered in depth at receiver.
Do those dice read winner or craps?

c'mon todd. really? "whomever signs bryant?" that's just unacceptable. as much as i love your blog, i've gotta say, you guys have to step up your game in the grammar department.
ps. it should be "whoever."
Posted by eric @ 10:09 AM Fri, Sep 07, 2007
i like chambers. the other players you mentioned should be considered "progress stoppers" to the development of crayton, hurd, & miles. let's see what our own guys can do.
Posted by 5xSuper @ 10:09 AM Fri, Sep 07, 2007
ANTONIO BRYANT. Look at his numbers. No one enjoys the wrath of Parcell's. Whose to say Parcell's didn't deserve a towel to the face, the guy wore everyone out. (Look at the end of of every season he was here). Stength, Speed, Hands, Youth, and Versatility. One or two games he has to sit out... who cares. Enough Said.
Posted by clark @ 10:09 AM Fri, Sep 07, 2007
As much as i hate to think it, I feel that the original posting of Glenn being out for the year is accurate. Otherwise, why search for 2-3 more opinions? If that is the case, let's not waste time and get another body in here. Sure sorry that Urban is gone.

Two Words...Bobby Sipio
Posted by jrs2300 @ 10:17 AM Fri, Sep 07, 2007
CHAMBERS: worked with Jason Garrett last year and he is learning a Offense from Cam Cameron which is similar to the Cowboys new offense.. he has the speed to replace Glenn
MCCARDELL: Yes sure he knows the offense but he doesn't have the speed we need - might as well trust in Crayton and Hurd.
HAKIM: Sounds good But he can't be your number #2. but he will help at PR - KR - and Slot WR and he gives us the Speed. so with him being an option at 3 position SURE BRING HIM IN.
BRYANT: Him speeding on the freeway is NO BIG DEAL in the Bay Area they are all about Ticket Quotas. On the Field he still Gets way too mad when the ball not coming his way. Him getting along with T.O. I just don't See it !!
CALDWELL: Knows the Offense from his SD days I don't know about his speed. If he had Speed why did New England keep Kelly Washington and not him ?? Speed issue.. Might as well use Crayton and Hurd
MORGAN: FLAT OUT NO

This goes back to draft day when I screamed at my TV for the Cowboys to draft a receiver in the 1st, 2nd, or THIRD round!!! You make your money in the draft by what you do AFTER the 1st round & the Joneses still haven't figured that out. No young receiving threat and no solid young corner will cost the 'Boys 2 games this year.
While that's water under the bridge now, I'd look for Az-Hakim or McCardell. What about the Pats 2006 2nd Rd Pick from Florida, Chad Jackson?
Posted by scurlock @ 10:27 AM Fri, Sep 07, 2007
Did anyone hear JJones bizarre answers to Norm Hitzges about T Glenn? Repeated "I don't know" over and over in a very frantic manner. Plus jones admitted he made the report to the Cowboy website about Glenn being out for the season, later pulled. What is happeening?
Posted by Bill in DC @ 10:30 AM Fri, Sep 07, 2007
I'm not sure that anyone on the street gives you more than Herd or Austin can. I say give the young bucks a chance.
I suppose we could play the 'we should have drafted a ____ earlier based on every injury we have at whatever position. We needed O linemen more than we needed WR.
Posted by LL from Austin @ 10:33 AM Fri, Sep 07, 2007
Where's Ramonce Taylor when you need him? He was as much a reciever as RB. Hey Ramonce, put that out and get over here.
TG is a HUGE loss.
Posted by Will @ 10:33 AM Fri, Sep 07, 2007
Terry Glenn translates into "Guy Who Lines Up Across From TO". Don't hit the panic button on a 35 year old WR . . . play the guys on the roster and evaluate talent. You don't loose too much from Glenn to Crayton - it's time Crayton steps up anyway as a 4 year pro. Trust Garrett to adjust the offense to fit their skills. Actually throw to your Pro Bowl TE a little more.
If you go out on the street and get Caldwell, that is very depressing. Crayton, Austin, and Hurd have taken roster spots for a few years now and they can't start? Now Stanback, 4 WR and they can't get one starter? Terrible scouting and worse coaching if you can't get one adequate starter from your currnt crop of WR.
And aside from Calvin Johnson, there wasn't any first round WR worth taking. Meachem is fat and Bowe is having problems adjusting in KC.
Posted by Patrick @ 10:37 AM Fri, Sep 07, 2007
They NEED to start Crayton if Glenn is out with injury. We need to find out if he can be more then just a number 3. Someone will pay for him next year and if he doesnt show anything it wont be us.
Posted by Larry @ 10:42 AM Fri, Sep 07, 2007
Well, two questions come to mind:
1. If you have to go out and get a receiver, what does that say about the other 4 guys you already have besides T.O.?
2. Assuming you dont put Terry on I.R., who you gonna cut to bring in a 7th receiver?
Hell, if you gonna invest a high 2008 draft choice on another player, let it be a cornerback,
and let Crayton, Hurd, Austin, and Stanback earn their paychecks.
Don't forget, the boys have excellent tight ends and running backs to throw the ball to as well.
Posted by Mean Green Fan @ 10:45 AM Fri, Sep 07, 2007
Todd....I presume you mean 2008 picks?
Posted by Mark R @ 10:55 AM Fri, Sep 07, 2007
Do we have to panic before the first game? It would be nice to see how our guys do before bringing in someone from the outside. Who was that receiver that we brought in a couple of years ago that played for Buffalo and Atlanta. I can't remember his name but I remember he did jack!
Posted by mattyinnj @ 11:07 AM Fri, Sep 07, 2007
Reche "Headlights" Caldwell? Ugh.
Posted by JSC @ 11:13 AM Fri, Sep 07, 2007
Mark, I believe it was Peerless Price.
Posted by JR @ 11:14 AM Fri, Sep 07, 2007
First of all, I agree with Patrick. It's time to start Crayton and see what he can do.
And McCardell is is 47 years old.
Posted by victorb @ 11:35 AM Fri, Sep 07, 2007
Patrick Crayton is the real deal folks!! He has done nothing but excel every time he's gotten the opportunity. I think he maybe a number 1 receiver in waiting.
Was it the Giants he torched a couple years ago? Or, was it the skins? Seem to remember him having a breakout game then.
Posted by Carl L @ 11:58 AM Fri, Sep 07, 2007
BRAYLON EDWARDS!!!!
I have read that Cleveland was trying to move Edwards on draft day but found no takers. I would trade for Edwards in a heartbeat. The guy has donated somewhere near $1 million to charities in Ohio and Michigan in his short career in the NFL. So, I would say character is not an issue. He is as talented as any WR in the NFL and he is still very young. If Edwards had a decent offense to play in along with a decent QB he would be a Pro Bowler! Offer Cleveland their 1st rounder back and we don't have to worry about drafting a no.1 WR anymore.
Posted by Robert @ 12:00 PM Fri, Sep 07, 2007
There was this guy called Sidney Rice who caught a TD versus us in MN. Instead we went for ANOTHER OLB. Now, here we are.
No matter, give Austin a shot. He has speed and size.
Hurd and Crayton are slot / #3 guys.
Posted by Tom H @ 12:01 PM Fri, Sep 07, 2007
Makes no sense to ponder shopping for a "guy off
the streets" w/ talent like Crayton, Hurd, Austin,
Stanback in reserve. Don't recall Dallas passing
on any better WRs in recent draft. A no-brainer
to keep Stanback in lieu of Urban.
WR is OK, can be covered from within...
Save the hand-wringing & trade talk for the CB
position...pretty elemental if you can't stop the
bad guys it doesn't much matter who's at WR.
WR is the "dime a dozen" position in the NFL...
...you live and die with your D.
Posted by Ray @ 12:06 PM Fri, Sep 07, 2007
I have the perfect solution. Trade 2 number one picks for Joey Galloway.
Oh wait...
Posted by L.J., Fla. @ 12:09 PM Fri, Sep 07, 2007
Tough luck on Terry Glenn. Don't panic, bring the number 3 & 4 guys into play. But seriously, the main thing is for agressive blocking by the line, coupled with Garret's ability as OC.
Posted by Goober @ 12:17 PM Fri, Sep 07, 2007
TO, Crayton, Hurd/Miles. That's at least as good a WR corps as Irvin, Harper and Kevin Williams/K-Mart.
Posted by garbeau @ 12:20 PM Fri, Sep 07, 2007
yo..."answer"..
put you in coach?
no offense young fellah but the first time tony leads you a little long over the middle, some strong safety'll turn you into a question mark...literally!
stick to the weekend flag leagues bubba. i'm sure you'll do well.
Posted by gary m @ 12:34 PM Fri, Sep 07, 2007
caldwell is the logical choice unless jeff ogden, stepfret williams, or billy davis are still around.
Posted by Fraggy @ 1:01 PM Fri, Sep 07, 2007
Can we tap the brakes on trading away future draft pics, please? Let's see if some our young receiver can step before we start mortgaging the future, again. Have we learned nothing from the past?
Posted by Patrick @ 1:23 PM Fri, Sep 07, 2007
How come nobody mentioned Keyshawn Johnson? He's not a deep threat so much, but he's definitely a move-the-chains guy and a great run blocker to boot.
Posted by Pokes @ 1:40 PM Fri, Sep 07, 2007
I'm more concerned about CB right now
Posted by Markipoo @ 2:14 PM Fri, Sep 07, 2007
Was Stanback not drafted because he is a phenominal athlete and speed? He was a sprinter....what else is he for? He just will be forced to develop faster. I am tired of these old guys anyway. Hopefully Glenn isn't back after this year, neither is TO. Out with the old, in with the new!
Posted by Malcolm @ 2:48 PM Fri, Sep 07, 2007
Tyson may have to return punts or maybe even Austin. Stanback is not ready, he even said so.
Hell naw, to Caldwell. He's terrible (see the 2007 AFC championship game)
Sign Bryant, why not? Contracts are not guaranteed, plus the reward outweighs the risk. That man is still a very good receiver......however, he may have a 4 game suspension waiting for him if he returns to the league.
So in reality, it's all about Patrick stepping up and helping this team now.
Posted by Anthony @ 3:28 PM Fri, Sep 07, 2007
NO trades or free agent signings! We have 5 WRs so lets roll with them. Hurd and Austin were going to have to play one day, have a little faith and chill. We have a HOF WR and a Pro Bowl TE and I think they'll be suiting up too. Can they at least play the game first before the overreacting?
Posted by LL from Austin @ 4:06 PM Fri, Sep 07, 2007
Somebody go get Roy Green out of "the Home"...he can take care of both the WR and CB openings.
Speaking of old-timers, where's Deon I mean Prime Toe when you need him?
Posted by DougO @ 4:20 PM Fri, Sep 07, 2007
I don't think the Cowboys will look for a name guy in a trade. I don't think it's necessary. As long as Crayton can stay healthy, he's a decent second receiver, and I believe Hurd is ready to have a much larger role.
But I wouldn't be surprised if Reche Caldwell was picked up. He could be a decent option as a third or fourth guy, and Phillips knows him from his San Diego days.
Posted by LL from Austin @ 4:20 PM Fri, Sep 07, 2007
Like it or not, whoever it is, if anyone, has to come with TO's stamp of approval. Chemistry is pretty good now, don't want to blow it wide open.
Posted by Rolando @ 4:40 PM Fri, Sep 07, 2007
Hey Ray, I lol'ed at the "hey, lets trade our two first rounders for Joey Gallow... oh, wait!"
I agree with the guys who said we need to get our WR fixed from within. Stanback and Hurd are going to play well -- frankly, Crayton is a perennial 2nd receiver at best.
Posted by pdiezel @ 7:37 PM Fri, Sep 07, 2007
I cannot wait for the season to really start so we can get over all the worrying. Terry Glenn is a good not great receiver. His best years came under Parcells and at many other stops he was the third and fourth guy. i sya Crayton is more than ready to start. Hurd and Crayton could end up playing here a long time if they step up this year.
Posted by Mike @ 9:23 PM Fri, Sep 07, 2007
5xSuper. Cleveland and SF threw the towel in Bryant's face. And if we sign him he immediately starts a 2 game suspension.
What a great way to start again in Dallas! No on Bryant. The guy is done.
Posted by Michael @ 12:15 PM Sat, Sep 08, 2007
Is nobody seeing the obvious? The Pats are looking to get rid of Moss already...who else could imagine a TO/Moss tandem? I could! We could probably get him for at the worst our 2nd next year. I would take that for a sixth ring!!
Posted by Willy Henderson @ 5:35 PM Sat, Sep 08, 2007
We don't need Moss or anybody else who might wreck the chemistry we are just starting to have.
Maybe sign someone for insurance, but nobody to start in front of Crayton or Hurd.
We haven't even played a game and some people are ready to call it quits on the team we already have!
Did anyone watch the Colts game the other night? The very first play Addai went down and did you see the stat they flashed?
Behind Addai they did not have a running back that had taken a single snap the year before! Repeat; NOT ONE SNAP! Yet the Colts are planning to go back to the Superbowl, now I know we are not the Colts YET but if they can feel comfortable with only one R.B. going into the season then I don't think we should be forfeiting the season just yet.
Take a look at who we DO have on our team, Offence; Romo, T.O,Witten, Fasano, three good R.Bs, three good recievers not named T.O, and an offensive line that is HUGE and can move well plus some capable backups. On defense;besides T. New and Ellis, and I realize that those are substantial losses we have,Roy W., D.Ware plus a lot of guys that are going to really step up in my opinion in W.Ps defensive scheme. Those would be Canty, Spears, Fergason, Reeves,Hamlin,Bradie James, Carpenter,Spencer, and Ayodele. That looks like a lot of skill on the field to me. We also have the best punter in the league bar none(although I hope we don,t have to see him on the field much). Sorry, I may be wrong but I see a LOT of upside compared to downside this season.
Being a fan since Eddie LaBaron was throwing the ball for us I am certainly not going to call it quits before the season even starts. Not with the talent we are going to put on the field.
