Wade Phillips said it was encouraging that Greg Ellis and Terence Newman participated in today's practice, but he's planning as if they won't play against the Dolphins. "We've already gone through all this," he said. "If they're there, they're there. If they're not, they're not. I'm planning on who we have, and if we get an addition, that's certainly great." Phillips said Ellis, who was the only Cowboy not wearing shoulder pads, did limited work in today's practice. It was a step forward, but Ellis has a long way to go to get game ready. Newman worked primarily with the scout team, making a nice interception. Phillips said Newman still isn't comfortable making certain cuts. |

Can someone please find out why Ellis was not put on the PUP so that we would have an extra roster spot for the first six weeks..could have used another body around I am sure.

I think both Ellis and Newman should sit out this week and next week against Chicago. After that, we have two tough offenses in New England and St Louis. At this point, I would tell Newman to do nothing for 7 - 10 days instead of constantly checking how his foot is.
Also, the rest of the defense needs the experience. Anthony Spencer, Bobby Carpenter, Jacque Reeves, and Nate Jones are not going to get any better by sitting and watching.

Michael, I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt here since there's a chance that you haven't been around when this was explained 40 million times. Ellis practiced the first day of training camp, thus he's not eligible for PUP. Stupid rule, but it's the rule.

I'm glad that Ellis and Newman are getting better. I think we as fans should not want or expect either back until they are fully recovered. We have to play with what we have and get Roy to handle his part of double coverage.

See there Rodney, you can say things nicely. I knew you could do it.
Personally, I would like to see Newman held out of this game(figure no way Ellis will play anyway).
I agree with some previous bloggers. The cowboys should certainly be able to handle Miami's offense and allow Newman at least one more week of rest. If the boys win, I would even chance holding him out against the Bears and that nutty QB of their.

The situation with Newman feels eerily like one that came up years ago with Deion Sanders. It also has the feel of Anthony Henry's injury of a couple of years ago. I would rather Newman sit as long as necessary than try to go when he's not ready. With Sanders and Henry, both tried to play when they couldn't, and the results were disastrous. Maybe Newman could spend his down time teaching Roy Williams some of the basics of pass defense.
