What's the most encouraging sign from this whuppin'?

2:47 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007 |
Tim MacMahon   E-mail   News tips

Folks, I'm about to head downstairs for postgame duties. I'll leave you with a little survey.

You see the question in the headline. Tony Romo is off-limits for this answer. It's obvious that he was outstanding again, and he'll get all the national buzz. So here are your options:

A) Patrick Crayton blowing up for the first time this season, proving that the Cowboys' passing game can be explosive even when T.O. doesn't have a big day.

B) DeMarcus Ware dominating for the second consecutive week. After two average games, he's looked like a Defensive Player of the Year candidate the last two weeks.

C) Greg Ellis eliminating any doubt that he can still be an effective pass rusher. He had 1.5 sacks despite playing in only nickel situations.

D) Other

B!!!

Posted by Kid Charlemagne @ 2:55 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

Greg Ellis.

Posted by Scott @ 2:55 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

D. Other. The fact that your closing blog entry comes in at over 5 minutes left in the game shows how powerful the Cowboy offense is.

Posted by gpaq @ 2:57 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

Other: we knew the O was good. A strong defensive game + only 2 penanlties for the league's most penalized team.

Posted by Cole @ 2:58 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

Can I be a homer and say all three? And Scott makes a very valid point too...

Posted by strick @ 2:58 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

D. For DEFENSE! We know how explosive the offense is... The Defense is getting better every week. Folks... this team has not even peaked yet.

Posted by Tanner @ 2:59 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

Today is was Crayton, but for the future it was great to see Ellis get in there and mix it up. By the time the Pats come to town we'll have 3 legit pass rushers to get after Brady.

Posted by Stanford Alum @ 2:59 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

Great job by the offense but today has gotta belong to the defense. No points allowed, great performances by Ware and Ellis, and even the first full-game by Newman!

Yes, we're playing the lowly Rams, but we *know* the offense is good. If our defense can keep improving, we have a chance to be a well-rounded (and potentially championship) team.

GO BOYS!

Posted by craig @ 2:59 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

Ellis!!! So good to have him back and know he's effective. I already knew Crayton could have big games. Let's hope it doesn't get to T.O.'s ego.

Posted by Bernardo @ 3:00 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

How about all of the above?

Posted by Jay @ 3:01 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

D. All of the aboce

I am loving seeing Greg Ellis out there. I hope he can at least do Nickel for the rest of the season and T-New looks fine out there. Also Reeves can cover. Is anybody rethinking the Aaron Glenn release now? Reeves can play and if T-New and T-Hen can stay health this secondary has a chance.

How about no dumb plays by Roy Williams today?? And I also actually saw him in on some good tackles. It's a miracle!

Posted by dave j @ 3:02 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

A - We need someone besides Whitten and Owens that Romo trusts. I promise you we will need Crayton in a big game before the season is over.

No offense to Demarcus Ware or Greg Ellis, but I don't put much stock in B or C because the Rams' o-line was so beat up.

Posted by Coop (Los Angeles) @ 3:02 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

Ellis. For us to get where we need to go we need another pass rusher. Exceptional QB's wont miss some of the throws that Bulger missed today. We need Ellis.

Posted by Stevo @ 3:05 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

D. That FOX cut away from the Dallas game to show the packers vikings game because they said "We at Fox are all about competition and this game seems pretty one-sided"

Posted by Andrew @ 3:07 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

They haven't been talked about it all that much but the O-line needs some props

Posted by Brad @ 3:10 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

I liked our 3rd Down conversions - 61% and our fewer penalties - 2 for 10 yds. Sound like we looked good.

Posted by Jeff in PDX @ 3:10 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

D) Brad and Tyson in the game with 10 minutes left in the 4th....

Posted by Jeff in PDX @ 3:12 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

d) did flozel even play?........if you know what I mean ; )

Posted by Ai Samurai @ 3:12 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

(D.) For Dallas Defense! Isaac Bruce and Tory Holt could not tear through our secondary like the Giants did. Terence Newman has returned. Greg Ellis has returned. Hamlin prevented a touchdown. Overall, the secondary looked solid against a dangerous passing offense.

Posted by Will @ 3:13 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

All it means is the Cowboys have been beneficiaries of the typical soft schedule the NFL gives them to try to get them into the playoffs every year. By the end of the day, the 4 teams Da Boyz have played will have a combined record of either 2-14 or 3-13.

Wow, I'm impressed. Who's up next week? SMU?

Posted by Anthony @ 3:13 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

Just for kicks, what is TO's mood like? Is he at all unhappy that he didn't play a big role today?

Posted by DavidG @ 3:15 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

CCCCCC!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by james muckleroy @ 3:16 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

ooohhh., nice timing Will, like a buzzard....it's about their talent, all around. Physical offensive line is my choice. Look at the second halves...

Posted by Warden @ 3:16 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

Has to be Ellis. For him to come back would be a blessing. But to contribute the way he did with 1.5 sacks? That's a real positive for the rest of the year. But of course Romo playing a great game again is another big key. Cowboys fans: we have the next Brett Favre, and I don't think it's jumping the gun to say that. This guy is just a special, special football player. Not just a Quarterback, mind you, but a football player! Also good to see Julius Jones contribute some solid runs.

Posted by strick @ 3:23 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

Good Job Will. By that logic only the Patriots are as bad as the Cowboys so far.

Posted by Rams Fan @ 3:24 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

Well, I hope you like winning, even though the refs gave it too you. Those referee's should be fired. That is the ONLY reasons the Rams got beat. Give the Refs the game ball! I can take losing, but not this way. The Rams were ripped off. I know it, you know it, and the refs know. This is not right.

Posted by Saint Jimmy @ 3:25 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

A) Patrick Crayton just showed the NFL that you can't take away TO without paying for it!!! There is no way to stop this offense. And when Glenn gets back....LOOK OUT!!!!

Posted by DJ @ 3:26 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

C - Greg Ellis. And let this put to rest whether or not he is worth the money he is receiving. He is also justified in asking for more.

Posted by Tanner @ 3:27 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

Will, the schedule is not picked out of a hat. We play 8 games against the NFC East and 4 games against the AFC East which includes New England. The 4 games the NFL chooses, @ Chicago (last year's NFC Champs), St. Louis (not our fault they were hurt), Green Bay (4-0) and @ Carolina who some people said would go to the Super Bowl this year. So where do you see the NFL giving the Cowboys an easy road to the playoffs? Did Goodell take a bat to the Rams O Line or break Bulger's ribs when we weren't looking or something?

Posted by Saint Jimmy @ 3:27 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

Rams Fan, you want some cheese with that whine?? You've gotta be kidding me!!! Yeah, the refs made the difference in a 28 point game. Get the F-bomb outta here!!!

Posted by strick @ 3:28 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

Hey Rams Fan... you just lost by SIX TOUCHDOWNS... you can blame officiating if you like... but it sounds a lot like denial to me.

Posted by Rev Jack @ 3:29 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

I'd say big Greg's return. Just picture week 8 w/ Tank, Ellis, and Ware on the field at the same time. Ouch.

Will- as the Fox coverage was fading out, they showed a clip of Romo and TO talking on the sideline while Johnson and Co played clean-up. TO is clearly yelling at Romo (though perhaps w/ a grin on his face- couldn't be sure, the shot was mostly the back of his head.) On slow-mo, I could read Romo's lips, saying:

"I did throw it to you in the first, but you were all..." then it cut away.

So there is at least something brewing there.

Posted by Brian Switzer @ 3:30 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

I love that the team and especially the defense has gotten better every game and that we will be adding Tank Johnson and Terry Glenn at midseason

Posted by Eric @ 3:30 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

Greg Ellis's return.

He completes the defense and give us a threat on both sides of the line.

Posted by Willy Henderson @ 3:30 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

Yeah Will
I am sure that the league knew when they made the schedule up how badly the Rams would be banged up.
Keep up the brilliant upbeat thinking buddy!
Now back to reality, all of the above!
HOW ABOUT THOSE COWBOYS!

Posted by Thomas Henderson @ 3:31 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

LOL rams fan. Shouldn't your team still be on the west coast losing NFC championship games to the Cowboys? Rams, just like their fans, still don't have any class.

Posted by Tanner @ 3:32 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

Rams Fan, what are you talking about? Did the refs make your CB miss that tackle or get burned on those Crayton TD's? Did they refs cause your D not tackle Romo on that scramble? Did they cause our Dline to stuff any chance you had of a running game? Were the refs the one blocking in pass protection? The ONLY reason the Rams didn't win?

Posted by Big Mike @ 3:35 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

Will, go back to the iggles blog. Back to topic, I was very impressed by the O-line and also would like to give some props to the coaching staff for having these guys prepared and great game plans the last few weeks. Also Garrett and staff have done a marvelous job play calling and making half-time adjustments.

Posted by Danelle Brown @ 3:42 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

Hey Rev Jack. For those of us in Texas who were lucky enough to see the whole game let me assure you that Tony & TO were on the sidelines laughing together. No sign of problems. TO was all smiles.

Posted by Bob @ 3:45 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

Demarcus Ware, Greg Ellis, and Patric Crayton. All of them, but also only 2 penalties in the game. Even Julius Jones had a good game, and lets not forget Tyson Thompson who came in late, and marched down the field. Jason Witten stepped up. Unfortunately T.O. didn't have a lot of catches and TD's, but he took 2 defenders out everytime he ran, and did a great job of blocking to the other receivers. How do you pick one person or one thing from a team like this? Pretty hard to do.

Posted by DQ @ 3:49 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

Offensive Line. They are playing well together, and they are physically imposing. Bigg Davis has come up BIG. Remember--Dallas overpaid for him??? Anybody think that today???

Posted by Tom H @ 3:50 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

B)...only vote for WARE'S emergence as the beast !
Vote includes all the bloggers who voted 'other'
for the Dallas D. Ware's ability to be ths primo
pressure guy, Pro Bowl material, is the heart &
soul of this defense.
2nd choice = Crayton...but I knew he had it in him
Was not certain Ware would dominate ala' that
bleepin Merriman...well look & see !
Wade P is "Mr Improve It", hahaha, not "Fix It".

Posted by Jim in Austin @ 3:52 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

D. Who out there thought the O-Line would be this dominant at the start of the season? Come on, be honest!!!

Posted by Chester @ 4:07 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

D. IT'S FUN BEING A COWBOYS FAN ONCE AGAIN !!!

Posted by Brian Switzer @ 4:09 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

I love Owens block on Crayton's first TD when he ran past everyone

Posted by Adrian G. @ 4:10 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

"What's the most encouraging sign from this whuppin'?"

D) Flozell Adams can actually make it through a game without a false start.

Posted by dbk @ 4:14 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

I'm impressed with the way this team has played and am amused at all of the love Greg Ellis is receiving when back this summer a ton of these same bloggers were calling him a whiner and ready to release him...unbelievable!!!

Posted by BigTex84 @ 4:18 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

Is Rams Fan back?! Don't get me started on that guy, he's a bit delusional and obsessed with the murder rate of Dallas, Texas. If you missed his previous posts, be grateful!!!

D) I like the flow of the offense and defense! They seem to compliment each other instead of spite each other. I love that T.O. had a smile on his face at the end of the game!! I love that the defense is starting to be feared by teams!! Finally, I love that Rams Fan will leave this site for good!!

Posted by ONE @ 4:19 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

D) Other

Total D effort. Def let up 0 points.

That said...St Louis is bad. You are supposed to deminate bad teams at home and they did.

Posted by Paulov @ 4:22 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

I have to conclude that the so-called Ram's fan is either completely delusional, or is in fact a misguided miscreant looking to get a rise out of Cowboy fans on our own blog.

Posted by TSmith @ 4:22 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

Other-All the cowboy haters crawling out of the woodwork, scrambling for crumbs of criticism. Soft schedule, cheating refs, not enough tissue from tito to cry in. Cry loud NFL the Cowboys are back. I keep waiting for that piece of tape to fall of Romos jersey revealing the S on his chest.

Posted by Dallas Fan in TN @ 4:25 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

Hey Paulov, if you can the find the blog:

"Miami radio hosts can't milk trash talk out of T.O."

You'll see what I am talking about. He's been at it for 24 straight hours!!

Posted by Steven Hecht @ 4:28 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

Ken Hamlin's solid play at safety was the most encouraging thing I saw, particularly his pass play defense. We all knew Ellis would be back sooner rather than later, and be pretty close to 100% when he did play.

Posted by Vaquero @ 4:30 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

Man, these 2007 Cowboys have to be one of the most exciting of all time Cowboys team! The offense I expected to light it up today, but to see the Defense hold the Lambs to 0 touchdowns! I did'nt think Greg Ellis would be able to do much. That just makes me laugh at all the negative press he got this summer. He's not 100% recovered, but still he comes in to get 1 1/5 sacks! Imagine what the D will be like when he gets healthier and we get Terry Johnson in there? God forbidding any more serious injuries, we are on our way to one of the best seasons in 11 long years. Let's enjoy this one my Cowboy brethren and I hope we play "conservative" with the Bills, and save anything not seen yet for the Pats. If we beat these guys, we will be as ready as ever to go and beat Mcflabb and the rest of those Philadelphia feebles accordingly. That is the game that worries me.
And a note to that Ram fan:Get out of here you wussy. You just got spanked so go to your room and don't come here whinning like a baby!

Posted by BamBam @ 4:33 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

The answer is D) the ability of the team to get better throughout the game.

Posted by Nate @ 4:33 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

Most penalized team in the NFL. Two penalties today. We'll need a performance next that next week and the following week if we want a chance at beating those Pats.

Posted by Rams Fan @ 4:49 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

Had the Rams had Steven Jackson and a healthy Bulger, the scores would have been reversed. Oh yeah, and Jerry Jones buying the refs.

Posted by Don @ 4:57 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

C

Posted by David in Seattle @ 5:00 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

Greg Ellis. He looked great. DeMarcus Ware should buy him dinner. Every day.

Posted by Andrew @ 5:01 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

Another vote for D) only 2 penalties.

Ware and Crayton were both things I was kind of expecting, and we've all seen what Ellis can do as a pass rusher, though it's nice to see that he's back. This is looking more and more like the defense we thought we'd be getting before the injuries.

After the defense started showing up after week 1, the biggest cloud on the horizon for me has been all the mistakes, so it's nice to see that everyone's bringing things back under control, the way they ought to be.

We have a real defense out there and the most exciting offense we've fielded since the 70's -- Wheeeeedoggies!

Posted by Andrew @ 5:04 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

Rams Fan:

> Had the Rams had Steven Jackson and a healthy Bulger, the scores would have been reversed. Oh yeah, and Jerry Jones buying the refs.

We'll never know what would have happened if the Rams had been healthy. You can only play against the team that actualy shows up to play.

If it floats your boat to fill your imaginary trophy case with the We-Would-Have-Won-The-Lombardi-If-Only award for this year, so be it. But everyone else will be laughing at you for it.

Posted by Brandon @ 5:06 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

rams fan is a blind idiot. the cowboys were able to play through poor calls last week vs. the bears. anyone who saw that game knows that bad calls were made by the refs. good teams play above those situations. the rams are not a good team right now. the boys are. get over it.

Posted by Allen @ 5:15 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

Turn off the little black and white TV you store in your janitor's closet, punch the clock, and call it a day at the Budweiser plant, you're done.

I hate multiple answer quizzes. How bout b and c

Posted by Rams fan @ 5:19 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

At least the Rams don't have to resort to an illegal horse collar to tackle opposing players every play. Another example of "do-whatever-it-takes to-win mentality your team has. Hey, it ain't over yet. Any Cowgirl fams want to bet the Rams have the better record by years end? Didn't think so. Cheaters!

Posted by Bill in DC @ 5:29 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

I'd have to say the defense. They are improving by the week. I sure hope Henry's injury isn't bad.

Posted by Ron in V.A. @ 5:31 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

D) Other. I think the lack of penalties shows that the team is becoming more disciplined.

To Rams fan: Yes, I'll happily take your money. How much? I relish taking your money because you really don't know much about football, do you?

Posted by Rams Fan @ 5:32 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

Cowboys had a chance to get Steven Jackson, and instead, they take an "average at best" Julius Jones. Nuff said! I win!

Posted by Vox Veritas @ 5:34 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

Yoo make Daryl Henley proud, Rams fan.

Posted by mike stevens @ 5:34 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

It can't be the defense with all the lineman the Rams have missing not to mention a banged up QB and one of the top 3 RBs in today's game also missing. There should have been more sacks against this O-line of nobodies.

But the Rams defense was mostly intact so Patrick Crayton's performance is the most unexpected (sore finger) and encouraging (take away Owens, Witten and the running game and Crayton's gonna kill ya)thing I take from this game.

Posted by strick @ 5:35 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

OK... OK... off to bed Rams Fan... you have to get up early for school tomorrow morning. You don't want to be sleepy when the teacher is reviewing long division. It is important to know such things when you are a grown up.

Posted by Dallas Fan in TN @ 6:25 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

Okay Rams Fan, you win (if that makes you leave)! The Rams lost and the Cowboys won (at least here on Earth)!! So you and the Boys have ONE thing in common!

Oh and I read your last string of blogs...BigTex84 kicked your butt man!! You got man-handled by a woman!!! Even our ladies in Dallas are awesome!!

Oh and P.S. Roy didn't horse collar anyone this game...so, let's think of another excuse. Let's see, Romo cheated when he made 3 Rams players miss him when the snap went awry...you're right, that was cheating when Bulger threw that ball right to the Dallas player IN THE END ZONE!! Man, I see what you mean now...what a catastrophe!!

Posted by BigTex84 @ 6:29 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

Yeah, we got Julius Jones...what were we thinking. I mean all he did today was score a touchdown...oh, and we have Marion Barber too. I forgot about how he "killed" your defense! Man...and we could have had an INJURED Stephen Jackson who can't play for weeks!! We are SO stupid!!! ;-)

Posted by Kevin @ 6:33 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

hey Rams fan,

you guy got Steeven Jackson, and you are still 0-4. Oh I forgot, he is on the bench. Jones ran for a touchdown. Go take your meds

Posted by Willy Henderson @ 6:40 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

Poor little Lamb's fan,
Your limp little excuses aren't even funny anymore. Is that the best you can come up with?
You are a pathetic little boy who does not even have enough character to admit when you lose. You do nothing but bring shame to your team and your city. I hope that the girls in your third grade class don't beat you up too badly after class tomorow because you obviously can't take any abuse without having a deluded little hissy fit.
Willy Wonka, did you make that up all by yourself or did one of the other little boys in class come up with it?
By the way, what is it you think you won in your weak little mind? I would love to hear this.

Posted by Buddy @ 6:47 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

Imagine how many points this team would score if they actually played a four-quarter game. Our 35 points were basically scored in 20 minutes.

Posted by mcindallas @ 7:48 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

i'm going with 'C'. Greg Ellis' successful return, so far, actually makes B look like the right answer. some may not give Ellis credit because the rams o-line is beat up but for him to play the way he did, after seeming so timid to do anything at all, is a big deal.

A is just behind because the Rams seemed focused on not letting T.O or Witten control the game and took their chances with Crayton. Fortunately Crayton won that match but not because he's great, not yet anyway, but because most receivers in the league can beat one-on-one coverage.

Willy Wonka, Excuse? Rams have a Superbowl ring this decade. Does Dallas? NO THEY DON"T. What do you not understand.

Video Vox,,,what does the drummer of the Eagles have to do with football? You are a moron.

hmmmm I wonder why Dallas doesn;t have a Superbowl trophy this decade?

Romo has 4 or 5 good games, and you punks are ready to declare him the next Montana/Marino all in 1.

Posted by BigTex84 @ 10:18 PM Sun, Sep 30, 2007

Rams Fan/Fact Man, don't make me embarrass you again! I guess I have no choice!!

First, no one declared Tony Romo anything but what he is, a talented and young quaterback who has dominated the past 4 games. The way he plays...he looks like Favre (it's not just us saying that, J. Madden, T. Aikman, J. Buck, and most other commentators have said this too!)

Secondly, your Rams only have 1 trophy in the past...well, they only have 1 EVER!!! The Cowboys are tied with the MOST CHAMPIONSHIPS BY ANY TEAM IN THE HISTORY OF THE SUPER BOWL IN 5!!!! Along with the modern New England Patriots, Dallas is the only other team to EVER WIN 3 in 4 YEARS!!! Really good teams can be traced back to having MANY decades of success, not winning one and never being heard from again!

Third, Daryl Henley history:

"Three weeks ago Daryl Henley, former Damien High school standout and Los Angeles Ram, was sentenced to more than 41 years in prison. He was caught organizing a nationwide cocaine network and then was convicted for plotting to kill the judge who presided over the case."

I think "Video Vox" is saying that perhaps you are on that stuff again!!

How about:
E) Romo so far NFL MVP!!!!

Posted by Vox Veritas @ 10:41 AM Mon, Oct 01, 2007

E) John Kocktoaster and Larry Giusti have apparently entered the witness protection program. Let's revisit some of their remarks.

"2-0 going into Chicago? Try 1-1 or better yet, 0-2." - John Kocktoaster

"I know this, Tim. I'll trade you Romo for Quinn, or Jay Cutler, or Carson Palmer, or Alex Smith, or Matt Leinart, or Phillip Rivers, or Matt Schaub, or Vince Young any day of the week and twice on Sundays." - Larry Giusti

"After Romo demonstrates his one hit wonderness and Brad Johnson gets criticized by TO for not being able to throw passes over 10 yards, the Cowboy fans will be screaming for Moore." - Kochtoaster

"If you don't believe that Payton and Gibbs showed the rest of the NFL how to defense Romo, just hide and watch this year, and at the end of the year, tell me how good you think Romo is then." - Giusti

"Do people really think that Wade has some sort of magic that is keeping him from behaving as he has in the past? I give it to week three in the regular season before the firestorm hits." - Kocktoaster

"Wait until week three when the Cowboys are 0-2." - kocktoaster

Oh, and here's a good one from "robert":

"AJ Smith in San Diego is the best GM in football BY FAR"
