Wilson tried to treat impotence

SportsDay's Gary Jacobson reports that Wade Wilson took substances banned by the NFL in an attempt to treat impotence.

Wilson said he was trying to improve his "quality of life" after the NFL announced that he was suspended five games and fined $100,000.

"That was my way of trying to cover that subject without coming right out and saying that," Wilson said Thursday when asked if he suffered from impotence, a common complication of diabetes. "There's a quality of life that I don't really want to say a great deal about."

It's understandable that Wilson, who was classy enough to have two conference calls with reporters when his suspension was announced, didn't want to go into details of why he experimented with the drugs. This should eliminate any doubt, however, that the drugs were for personal use and not being distributed to players.

Yes timmy, Wilson is a "stand-up" guy. I didn't miss the pun, you cheeky devil.

Posted by Tim MacMahon @ 10:04 PM Thu, Sep 06, 2007

That really was not intentional. This is a rare topic that I think should be treated seriously. I changed "stand-up" to "classy."

Posted by ernest t bass @ 10:14 PM Thu, Sep 06, 2007

How the hell does this "affliction" "eliminate any doubt, however, that the drugs were for personal use and not being distributed to players."

That's one of the most ignorant things that you've written that I've read. Maybe the most ignorant.

Posted by stevo @ 10:15 PM Thu, Sep 06, 2007

Not to be Devil's advocate... but show me scientifically how anyone could think HGH or a cocktail of such, could improve impotence... he has diabetes and I understand that ED is a potential downfall of that, but from all of my schooling I cannot wrap my head around how HGH could alleviate that.

Posted by BigTexKahuna @ 10:27 PM Thu, Sep 06, 2007

While I think Roger Goodell was long overdue for the commissioner's spot, especially given his no nonsense approach toward the "Bad Boyz" within the NFL, I truly believe he overreacted with this Wade Wilson affair... Five game suspension and a hundred large fine!!! Are you kidding me? Way over the top!

Posted by Calhoun @ 10:35 PM Thu, Sep 06, 2007

You are the biggest idiot on this blog. Wilson's problem is a sensitive subject. If its attention you're wanting ernie, just say so. Geeze Tim, why do you allow this creep to insult someone in Wilsons predicament?

Posted by Donovan @ 10:44 PM Thu, Sep 06, 2007

Too Much Info story of the year.

Posted by Robert @ 10:44 PM Thu, Sep 06, 2007

So first he uses HGH for Diabetes when there are at least 4 Walmart Scrips for $4 for it.

No he used HGH for impotance when there are at least 8 drugs on the market of which my MD is giving them away.

What is the next pile of pooh from Wade?

God, what a horrid liar.

Posted by David (Too many Davids) @ 10:49 PM Thu, Sep 06, 2007

Stevo and Bass.

If you read the original article you will find 2 things. One is that a prosecuting attorney in the case said Wilson's prescription order amounts were consistant with "personal use". Also I can imagine that if you get desperate, and becoming impotent could can cause desperation, you will be willing to be open minded about such things when a doctor is telling you it will work. Wilson saw the clinic on "60 minutes" and thought it was legit.

Posted by bambam @ 10:53 PM Thu, Sep 06, 2007

Does that stuff work? I have this friend see...

Posted by Mike @ 11:03 PM Thu, Sep 06, 2007

Well, this should get the award for least classy scoop of the year.

Gary Jacobson, along with anyone that repeated this story, should be ashamed of themselves. Is there any privacy anymore?

This is just sickening to invade someone's privacy like this.

Posted by Robert @ 11:04 PM Thu, Sep 06, 2007

If you guys believe Wilson was doing this for Diabetes/ED then I have bridge to sell you. You can get a Diabetes and ED script from a legit MD anywhere in this country.

Common guys, it was not for personal use. Time to call it the ways it is. You are making the OJ Jury look like geniuses.

Posted by stevo @ 11:17 PM Thu, Sep 06, 2007

David,

Personal use aside... HGH is not a commonly prescribed thing for ED, especially when Viagra and all that rely on nitrogen oxide as their basis of working, whereas HGH does nothing of that sort... I can't help but think that this is just one of those things that is a cover-up of something else... It makes no medical sense. I could be desperate for ED, but it doesn't mean I'm gonna just shoot the breeze with something completely unrelated to ED to cure it.

Posted by stevo @ 11:20 PM Thu, Sep 06, 2007

Am I the only one, but this kinda reminds me of when you wanted to get out of something in school and you said you had "diarrhea" just cuz it was something embarrassing that no one would check up on... just a thought

Posted by Gabe @ 11:27 PM Thu, Sep 06, 2007

Do ya'll really think that the Commish would've fined him that much and suspended him on top of the fine, if this really was about diabetes or ed? This whole thing smells... I don't think the NFL needed another scandal, so poor Wilson has ed now.

Posted by Lance @ 11:43 PM Thu, Sep 06, 2007

I agree with Mike. This did not need to be reported. Perhaps Gary Jacobsen would now like to discuss his sex life on the front page of dallasnews.com .

Posted by Richard Lauer @ 11:56 PM Thu, Sep 06, 2007

You guys are missing the point. It's illegal. The reason doesn't matter. I don't really think it's any of our business anyway, the reason, that is. Would any of us want every dork on the street reading about our personal problems? Too many people get their jollies by reading, and commenting, about the personal problems of others.
Just remember"there, but for the Grace of God, go I."

Posted by Anthony @ 12:29 AM Fri, Sep 07, 2007

More power to Wade. What does it matter, if a coach or Jerry Jones for that matter is using HGH because its not like he's going to be on the field? Maybe I'm too liberal, but I just think most people need to remove the stick, get real, or cast the first stone. How about Roger and Co. look into creating a decent pension plan for former players instead playing law and order every other week, I digress.

Posted by Greg in LA @ 12:43 AM Fri, Sep 07, 2007

Since I see no one else here who has posted is a diabetic, let me give you a little insight, since I have been one for almost exactly as long Wade has been one (I was diagnosed in 1986). It's a degenerative disease, meaning things go downhill and they don't come back (pardon the pun). Tissue dies, eyesight fades, sensation in extremities is lost. This is different than the typical ED which most medications such as Viagra treat. Also, Viagra and the like can be more dangerous for diabetics (and it isn't that safe for non-diabetics either). HGH is something that clearly helps muscle and tissue heal faster. So I can see the connection, even if it does seem a little far-fetched.

My issue with Wade is why the hell isn't he on an insulin pump? Most Type 1 diabetics use that and it gives them much, much better control, and I am the first to attest to it. He not only needs a new ED specialist, he needs to find a more up-to-date endocrinologist.

Posted by Mike @ 1:08 AM Fri, Sep 07, 2007

Richard, you aren't in the same zip code as the point. What Wade Wilson attained was a legal substance and not something a player would need a coach (of all people) to get for him. It is "illegal" in the NFL. So is alcohol on charter flights.

Newsflash to Robert: If any Bears players were getting banned substances they would not be using a coach to get it. There are pushers for that and it's very dicey. The coaches and players are in the same boat when it comes to the trail. I can tell you are one that prides yourself on never letting the wool get pulled over your eyes, but you've abandoned common sense here and are clearly not informed on the nature of the issue (though I'm sure you just know you are.)

Gabe, yes I believe the commish would have done exactly what he did in Wade's case. Why? For the same reason if a 17 year-old couple was having sex for two years and they do it again a day later when the guy turns 18 he's a sex offender for life. NO COMMON SENSE IN THE SYSTEM.

Posted by Cleve Moten @ 5:22 AM Fri, Sep 07, 2007

This is certainly unfortunate. I find deep sympathies for Wade. The loss of virility can be pretty devastating to a man who otherwise feels potent and in good health. While the experiment apparently did not work, it's certainly understandable that a man would take risks to hold on to what might be considered the defining grace of his manhood. Many of us, I'm sure, rushed to judgment on this matter, but now a new issue arises. The concern of the league is, or should be, prohibiting the use of performance enhancing drugs, because that can affect the outcome of games. Wade Wilson is not a player. He is not a engaged in the physical contests on the field. His personal use of a legal substance banned by the league to players hardly affects the outcome of games or the individual performances of players on the field, which is the legitimate scope of the league's concern and prohibition. It remains to be seen whether the league's policy in this regard can, or should, extend to Wade Wilson's conduct.

A bunch of medical experts on a Cowboys blog, amazing!

Great and informative comment from someone who might know what he's talking about, rather than many of you who speculate and really know nothing.

Good job Greg in LA!

Posted by Maverick @ 7:39 AM Fri, Sep 07, 2007

HGH is harmless IF used at 1IU. This is regardless of age, sex, etc. Anything more than this is very much abuse which is why we are getting the latest headlines on this. Now, how do I know this? I happen to know the longest living human on HGH. He uses 1IU and that's it. He's 74 now and can kick Timmy's/Archer's butt in handball at the sametime. So, the impotence thing is one resolution, but it's used to be build up the immune system including the pituitary gland. So, if I was Wade, I wouldn't have said anything about the impotence situation, just use the diabetes which is actually the cause of it.

Posted by Chris J. @ 8:10 AM Fri, Sep 07, 2007

My dad has diabetes related ED, the only option I'm aware of for it is shots. Trying anything is better than sticking needles in a place that shouldn't be anywhere near a needle.

Posted by rf @ 8:56 AM Fri, Sep 07, 2007

Anthony is closer than most of you clowns in addressing the truth. Normally healthy people just don't get it. Wait until you get hit with something. ED pills DO NOT mean someone can get "busy" IF they have underlying health issues, especially connected to hormonal issues.

Do some d*** research.

Greg in LA:

It was reported on ESPN that Wilson wears an insulin pump.

Posted by Scott @ 9:44 AM Fri, Sep 07, 2007

This should have never been reported as it's a purely private matter. And while I support the commissioner's efforts to crack down on wrongdoing, this is a case where a slap on the wrist would have been more than sufficient.

Posted by chump @ 10:38 AM Fri, Sep 07, 2007

Whatcha wanna bet he ends up spinning this into a Palmeiro-type Viagra endorsement?

Posted by Big Kev @ 10:48 AM Fri, Sep 07, 2007

Was it really necessary to post this in your blog? Who cares if Wilson was ED or why he took the HGH. Everyone knows he is a good guy and he made a mistake. Let's give the guy some privacy.

Posted by Jodyt @ 10:53 AM Fri, Sep 07, 2007

I saw the same story on 60 Min. and I thought it was a legit clinic. The idea that HGH could help with aging problems sounds reasonable enough. If you have a problem that conventional medicine does not help, you will look for something that might work. Particularly in this area.

Posted by Maverick @ 11:08 AM Fri, Sep 07, 2007

Forgot to inform you all. Moose Johnson, on the Galloway Show, yesterday stated he fought to the wall with Godell on this issue. However, Godell had to do it as he said it those who are employees have to be held to a higher standard. I think he hated to do it, but didn't have a choice politically. Personally, if you are going to fine the person, do so according to their salary level and not the NFL player's. Wilson doesn't make TO money you know.

Posted by Robert @ 11:57 AM Fri, Sep 07, 2007

Mike, go read the indictment to see what the NY and Fed guys are looking for -- start with Florida guys who I have some knowledge about.

Your reasoning sounds much like those defending Vick early on -- well he is too rich and had no idea his hoise, he has buds who got him into this, he would never do it himself, he would get a surrogate ....

...... ooops he actually was stupid enough to kill dogs himself in front of others.

Wade Wilson may, or may not, have not passed it along but the chances he ordered HGH for himself seems very odd given all the medicine available for his Diabetic and ED issues.

Let us just call this an MD's opinion on the subject and leave it at that.

People do stupid things all the time to help folks they like. Just seems to be the case here and Wade is fumbling around for an excuse.

Posted by B @ 12:26 PM Fri, Sep 07, 2007

Anything to sell papers, right Gary? Embarrass and humiliate someone in the interest of furthering your career? What a jerk.

Posted by John Kochtosten @ 2:44 PM Fri, Sep 07, 2007

For a delicate subject, you guys sure aren't finding it too hard to talk about.

Hey Wade, keep a stiff upper lip. Don't let it get you down.
