So I'm walking around the locker room Thursday, minding my own business and Jason Witten asks for some help. "Tell the crowd we need them this week," he said. Having covered a game in every NFL stadium I must admit, Texas Stadium wouldn't be among the top-five loudest venues. It can be loud. It was for the Indianapolis game last year. But it's not consistently loud. And I've always wondered why the fans do the wave and cheer louder when the Cowboys have the ball. Anyway, here's more Witten: "That was loud when Peyton (Manning) came in. I think it can make a big difference for teams. We hear it when we're on the road. I know it can have an effect with guys like Tom (Brady) and Peyton." |

The cowboy faithful it seems has never learned the fine art of raising hell when the other team has the ball.
I hope they prove me wrong Sunday.

Yea whats-up with that?
GO COWBOYS,Be Perfect!
Posted by John @ 3:07 PM Thu, Oct 11, 2007
Yea... why is it that our fans cheer and yell when we have the ball, and kind of go quiet when they have it? That really is weird.
Posted by chris graham @ 3:20 PM Thu, Oct 11, 2007
man whut is this!we r 5 and 0, 5and 0 is 5and0.
Posted by yaeger @ 3:31 PM Thu, Oct 11, 2007
Our crowds are weak. I can't stand it. It's all the yankees that move down here and take the true fans seats. Texas Stadium used to be the best!!
Posted by Josh Ellis @ 3:35 PM Thu, Oct 11, 2007
I would say blame it on the wine & cheese crowd, but Mavericks' games are usually about 70% wine & cheese crowd and the AAC is always rocking.
Posted by David in San marcos, TX @ 3:42 PM Thu, Oct 11, 2007
I will never understand why the crowd is always loud when the 'Boys ghave the ball. I proudly say I am at my loudest when the visiting team has the ball, even more so when it is 3rd down. (Just have to thrown in I am in my 3rd year of being a season ticket holder; Yes I drive 3½ hours to the game and 3½ hours back home after the game. That's fine by me. Sorry about thrwoing that in. Couldn't help myself). Let's do this Cowboys!!!
Posted by Cindy @ 3:44 PM Thu, Oct 11, 2007
If it'll help, I'll be screaming in my living room in California.
Posted by Jim @ 3:51 PM Thu, Oct 11, 2007
YES...bring all the noise. I am hoping the crowd will produce noise never heard in the stadium!!!
Posted by Patriot Nation @ 3:57 PM Thu, Oct 11, 2007
Pats have won 2 AFC title games on the road, and came within 4yds of winning one in a dome last year.... I promise you, the crowd noise will mean nothing.
Posted by drhorton @ 4:00 PM Thu, Oct 11, 2007
I'm there with you Cindy, only I will be screaming in St. Louis.
As for the stadium noise, it probably has something to do with some of the idiots who actually go to the game. For example, when I was there two weeks ago, some old man was sitting next to me reading a book. Are you freakin' kidding me? Why was that guy even there? The ushers need to kick out those idiots and give their seats to real fans!!!!!!!!!
OK, I feel better now. Tell Witten we will do our best from afar.
Posted by drhorton @ 4:03 PM Thu, Oct 11, 2007
Forgot to mention, the noise didn't seem to bother the old man. His hearing aid was turned way down.
Wow, that still ticks me off.
Posted by Shane @ 4:07 PM Thu, Oct 11, 2007
Hey, Patriot Nation!
I heard that you're nothing but a low-down, no good, Yankee liar.
Posted by Jaruiz @ 4:09 PM Thu, Oct 11, 2007
I will be cheering from Tulsa, OK. I moved here from Dallas 3 yrs ago. I hate it because all these Okies want to talk about is OU.
GO COWBOYS!!!
Posted by mattyinnj @ 4:12 PM Thu, Oct 11, 2007
I'm sure that Patriot Nation is 100% correct.
I must be the only Cowboys fan that knows that all of the New England Patriots players are physically incapable of being rattled by noise, bright lights or gunfire. Even if you magnified the shreiks of a thousand shackled banshees by 10000x you couldn't rattle even the lowliest UDRFA on the Pats bench. C'mon guys, seriously!?!? Why can't you all be like Adrian in Rocky IV and admit that "You can't win!!! It's SUICIDE!" The Pats are an unstoppable lazer guided rocketship of perfection that mkes this entire season redundant. I am suprised that Goddell hasn't inscribed the Lombardi Trophy already. Tom Brady's semen is incapable of being trapped by any prophylactic, and he is so irresistible to women that he is probably in your bed right now impregnating your wife. And Bill Belichick's coaching acumen is so highly evolved that scientists from the year 2565 are attempting to develop technology to reanimate his corpse in the hopes that he can lead the Earth Army against the Klingon Invaders from Uranus.
And scariest of all? They're imprvious to sarcasm.

The Texas Stadium crowd has always been lame, but it's certainly much livelier now than it used to be. Probably because the crowd has gotten younger. I remember back in the 1970s, the Cowboys, even in big games, would make a big play and they would pan the crowd and you would see people just politely clapping. It was weird. Then the early 90s came along after so many down years, and the crowd seemed much louder and into the game. It's starting to get that way again, but it's true that they still seem clueless about when it's appropriate to cheer loud (hint: when the OTHER team has the ball).
Posted by Fraggy @ 4:22 PM Thu, Oct 11, 2007
my friend and i will be there and screaming our heads off (at the appropriate times, of course). we wil make sure section 125 is in line. that's about all i can speak for.
Posted by adam @ 4:22 PM Thu, Oct 11, 2007
the aac was most definitely not rocking during that golden state series, their crowd made our crowd look like pansies, i have been to just about every cowboys game since i was 8, and i must say i have not been impressed with the 'family' atmosphere that most people expect in there
Posted by Vox Veritas @ 4:24 PM Thu, Oct 11, 2007
"Pats have won 2 AFC title games on the road, and came within 4yds of winning one in a dome last year.... I promise you, the crowd noise will mean nothing."
Yeah, I heard that Tom Brady is 8 feet tall and 496 pounds.
Your fear is palpable.

My most cherished Texas stadium memory is the NFC championship in Jan 96 against Green Bay. We didn't sit down for a minute of that game. I have had the good fortune of watching many of the games in the stadium. It is always great fun. That is one of the few times when the crowd really made a big difference in the game, however. I am looking forward to the new air-conditioned stadium, however. It was January and our seats were in the sun and it was HOT!
Posted by Fraggy @ 4:47 PM Thu, Oct 11, 2007
one thing that would help the crowd get into the game is if the offense would not wait until the end of the 2nd quarter to start scoring. get the crowd excited and they will most defintely show it. a big sack, or turnover, by the defense early in the game always helps to...just ask buffalo!

Me and my knucklehead boys will make sure sec 114 is present, accounted for, and LOUD!!!
Let's make a statement on Sunday.
COWBOYS!!!
Posted by Todd @ 4:51 PM Thu, Oct 11, 2007
Texas Stadium has always been terrible. Hopefully the new stadium (sadly being built in Arlington) will be different.
yaeger: Are the "Yankees" you blame it on, the ones from Philadelphia that make it a difficult place for offenses, or are they the ones from New York, or wait maybe they are the ones from Buffalo the other night that made no noise whatsover?
It seems that the Yankees you blame things on do a rather impressive job of making noise in their home cites. I suppose it is only when they come to Texas that they become silent. Get Real.
Posted by Josh Ellis @ 4:53 PM Thu, Oct 11, 2007
No disrespect to George Dunham, but maybe we should get Humble Billy to come and do the PA work for this game.

Getting rid of george won't make a difference, but FREE BEER would help!

WHATS UP!!! I'm here from Connecticut for the big game... and guess what? I'm A COWBOYS FAN!!! That's right.. my wife and I are HUGE Cowboys fans. I actually go to one or two games a year and sell the rest of the tickets on ebay. Anyway, we'll be chillin in the Corral getting our game faces on unless someone's got a tailgate going on that we can crash!!! Email me at brandonjubrey@hotmail.com
See you at the game!!! GO COWBOYS!!!

Oh, also... the guy that made the comment about "Yankees" ruining the atomosphere in Texas Stadium is way off base. I've been to games at Giants stadium (Rams, Raiders and Cowboys) and the Giants fans are ALWAYS loud!!! You can always count on at least 1 fight in your section, and they make it MISERABLE for opposing fans. I've been to games at TX stadium before, and never seen anything close to that.

Brandon:
You are correct. I will add that it is not a Texas thing. It seems to be a Dallas thing. Years ago, I used to go to a lot of Houston Oiler games (87-93). They were good then and that place was insane. Texas Stadium has never had that type of atmospher or like the ones in other NFL cities.
Posted by Buddy @ 7:31 PM Thu, Oct 11, 2007
Bring in Humble Billy Haynes as guest PA announcer.

"I've been to games at Giants stadium (Rams, Raiders and Cowboys) and the Giants fans are ALWAYS loud"
You misspelled "drunk on near beer"
Posted by LoudFan @ 7:42 PM Thu, Oct 11, 2007
I totally agree that TX stadium needs to be loud this week. I wish they would ban all those high-heel wearing coorporate people who aren't real fans. They are a waste of precious space. Let the real fans take their tickets!! I am a season ticket holder and I think some company has bought out about 20 of the seats around me because lately it's always a bunch of super casual fans all from the same company who just sit and talk about nothing. I'm sick of sitting by them when they aren't even paying attention. I'll be sure my section is loud this week and every week!
Posted by Todd @ 7:49 PM Thu, Oct 11, 2007
Loudfan:
You are on target about the company people that seem to be interested in other things while the game is going on. You have to believe that happens in other cities as well though. The interesting thing is, that despite the lack of noise over the years at Texas Stadium compared to other cities, the Cowboys for the most part have been fairly dominant at home. Especially in years when they have been in contention for the playoffs.
Posted by Todd @ 7:57 PM Thu, Oct 11, 2007
In fact:
Home record for Cowboys:
1992-1995 = 25-7
1976-1979 = 25-5.
I would conclude that those numbers represent a serious home field advantage.
Posted by joe @ 8:41 PM Thu, Oct 11, 2007
I remember Ron Springs once said that 'Cowboy fans show up in their minks and their furs and they cheer when they want.'....
Posted by Brandon @ 9:18 PM Thu, Oct 11, 2007
Buddy - What did I mispell? If that was a joke, I don't get it.
I'm hyped for this game!!! I'm shaving my head and painting it like a Cowboys helmet and my wife is painting her face (but no shaved head) I've also brought a sign with me... Look for it if you're at the game. I'll be sitting in Section 14.
It'd be cool if they handed out some towels or something. Buffalo was ROCKING with them things on Monday night!
Posted by BigTexKahuna @ 9:28 PM Thu, Oct 11, 2007
'Lee' is absolutely right, and 'Joe', with his Ron Springs comment- if true, and I've no reason to think otherwise- gets it, too.
I go all the way back to watching games in the Cotton Bowl in 1960... I was seven years old back then. Cowboys fans seemed to had made a decent amount of noise back then. We made a lot of racket screaming for Don Meredith to come down from the MNF booth during an embarrassing 38 to NUTHIN' shutout at the hands of the Saint Louis Cardinals... I think that was in 1970.
I don't know what it is about Texas Stadium, either. Maybe because it is 'almost' an indoor facility and fans felt they had to 'behave' while being indoors? I do recall seeing women at the games dressed to kill with their perfectly coiffed big hairdos... flawlessly applied makeup. Hell... some of them even wore white evening gloves to a FOOTBALL GAME! It was as if we were there watching a tennis match at Wimbledon instead of a professional FOOTBALL GAME. Men wore suit coats and ties, and many wore a Fedora... like Tom Landry's famous hat. They brought their own flasks and got cups of ice from the concession stands to make their own Scotch and/or Bourbon and water. I know because this was exactly the routine of my parents and their friends at both the Cotton Bowl and Texas Stadium.
I moved to Paradise in '78, so the only Cowboys games I see from Texas Stadium are on television. The Texas Stadium crowds definitely seem more rowdy now then they were back in the '70s... I'll be making lots of noise from my living room, too... and I'll start doing that at 10:15 in the morning, as that's just about the time the game will start out here.

jaruiz, I am one of those okies that love OU and the Cowboys. I know most Okies either follow the chiefs (dads fave and their stadium rocks loud)or the cowboys. Tried to find tickets on Ebay going for 1600+for two. So I will scream through the tv from N.E OK. Say hi to Rob at the grey snail for me in Tulsa.

bintexas: Your post brought back good memories. . . I was also at that 96 NFC Championship game and you are absolutely right. . . we never sat down the entire game, screamed for three hours like there was no tomorrow and was exhausted by the end of the first half. That game was unforgettable.

Generally speaking, stadiums that are not domed, have real grass, and have the game and fans are to the elements (cold, rain,etc..the way football was meant to be played) are a much tougher and louder crowd. When its 22 degrees in Buffalo they never stop yelling, dudes will have their shirts off being crazy. At the cowboy games people complain of being in the sun for 30 minutes until the it passes over the hole in the roof. Indoor stadiums have turned the game into more of an indoor track meet. Theirs nothing more cool than to turn on a game and the field covered in snow, or mud. They are ruining the game IMHO. Its turned into indoor lawyer ball. Cant hit, everything is instant replay, horse collar rule, kicking timeout rule, cant do this, can't do that.....you have to have a handbook in order to keep up. No wonder the players are afraid to hit these days. If you knock someone's block off they throw the flag and check to see if was legal later. At least the NCAA will let the players throw down.
Posted by NFL Prophet @ 1:38 PM Fri, Oct 12, 2007
The rowdiest crowds are those with open stadiums. Most of them in the north-east.
In my earlier post I meant to say
stadiums that are not domed, have real grass and have the game and fans SUBJECT to the elements.....
sorry.
