Cowboys-Bills Flashback: Jimmy goes out in style

Nobody knew at the time that Super Bowl XXVIII would be Jimmy Johnson's last game on the Cowboys' sideline. Folks were too focused on celebrating back-to-back titles after the 30-13 win over the Bills, officially making the '90s Cowboys a dynasty.

Emmitt Smith was named MVP after rushing for 132 yards and two TDs. Safety James Washington had a heck of a case for the honor with an 11-tackle performance that included a forced fumble, interception and fumble return for a TD.

Blackie Sherrod, as usual, had the most entertaining account of the game.

There was no rumble, like the approach of a tornado; there was no tentative quiver that precedes an earthquake. The Dallas troops simply struck with the speed of a mongoose and struck again until Buffalo reeled into the embarrassing position of becoming the only sports outfit ever to lose four consecutive champeenship contests.

On a slightly different note, the Rams just benched Marc Bulger. That's two starting QBs in a row that have lost their starting jobs the week after playing the Cowboys!

Yeah, but in Bulgers case it was a mercy benching. He has broken ribs and was being physically abused back there.

[Springsteen] Glory days. [/Springsteen]

What was just as impressive was that Jimmy led the 'Boys to two consecutive NFC championships over the Niners and even guaranteed the second NFC championship game. "They're Brass!"

Not only that Ben, but Coach Linehan of the Rams is taking the play calling duties from the OC.

If this is a trend, then I can't wait to see what happens after the Patriots game. I would imagine (hope) that Tom Brady gets benched with a broken toe, and Robert Kraft makes himself the head coach. I guess that would leave Coach Belicheat to dissect left over film that they didn't turn over to the commish.

Tim, Why did you have to go and bring all of this back up. I was just starting to feel good about Jerry again after all these years.

Hey guys, To hell with the old glory days, lets concern ourselves with the new ones.

What I want to know is what's the beat with Anthony Henry and his sprain ????!?!?!?!?!??!!!!!
Let's get our priorities straight here.

There was a time, until just recently, that I would go back into the DMN archives and look back to those 90's glory years because the current Cows were terrible.

But you what? Over the last year, since Romo, I have stopped doing that, and I for one am living in the present. The present time is great again for Cow fans as Romo and Co. are skilled, hungry, and have a good chance as anyone to make to the Super Bowl from the NFC.

Jimmy Johnson, if not the best, then one of the best Head Coaches of all time in my humble opinion. What he did to this Cowboy's franchise may not have a parallel in sports history. Winning 3 Superbowls with that team he constructed (because we all know that Switzer just came along for the ride)and Lord knows how many more, if not for the fact that the egocentric struggle for who would get the credit for this creation brought our mighty franchise to the ground.
But now, all us Cowboy Fans can have more optimism and actually look forward to the last stretch of the schedule. With some of our injured coming back, who knows how good we might look in late November and December. That's why I'm so anxious to see Terry Johnson come in and play. I want to see what he's got!And if he plays well, then we will be fresh on that Dline all game long!
Having played the Nose Tackle position, I can't emphasize enough how important it is to have someone come in and give you a breather, especially if you have been double teamed the whole day.
Like most of you, I'm looking down the road to that New England game.I think that Phillips has proven that he's able to get his players attention and has them well prepared to play when they hit that field. He should have them ready again for Buffalo. The Coach is the main man out there on that battle field, and if you don't believe me and say it's more about the players, then take one good look at San Diego and then argue with me.
We all know how they are biased up there at ESPN against our Cowboys, but what really bothered me most of something I read today was the people there saying they're not going to give the Cowboys much credit until after their game against the Pats. It bothered me, but after pondering it awhile, I suppose they are right. They will not give us our respect until we go out on that field and find a way to beat the Pats.
One of the keys to this game has to be if we can find a way to bring the heat on Brady, without having Moss tear us up back there. Somehow, someway, we have to disrupt his timing. Watching that Monday night game, they looked pretty impressive. But, that's not the Cowboys defense they faced. For a minute there, I thought the Bengals might even bring in Skyler Green as a LB in that game. The Cowboys have not been tested like they will this Oct 14, but neither have they. Got a feeling we can take these guys. What do you guys think about this?

"Winning 3 Superbowls with that team he constructed (because we all know that Switzer just came along for the ride)"

Not to pick nits, but... Deion Sanders? Larry Allen? A couple of pretty talented guys that played large roles in getting that third Super Bowl win in the 90's, and both joined the Cowboys after Johnson left. Lesser but notable players that joined A.J. (After Johnson) were Ray Donaldson, Derek Kennard and Scott Case. And of course, the Cowboys were absolutely bleeding talent with free agency, losing Ken Norton Jr, Gesek, Gogan, Casillas, Harper, Jeffcoat, Stepnoski, Kenny "the Shark" Gant and James Washington, among others, between 1994 and 1995. I might not give 100% credit to Switzer, but I'd give more to Switzer than Johnson. Landry drafted Irvin, Aikman was a no-brainer for any team that might be looking for a franchise QB, and Jimmy had to "settle" for trading up to get Emmitt after Bengals took James Francis.

Yes, you make a good point there "Voice of Truth". We do have to give Switzer some credit. He could have blown it like Turner in San Diego.
