Emmitt educates ESPN Radio listeners

Tim MacMahon   E-mail   News tips

I'm blogging from the backseat of Calvin "Lucky" Watkins' rental car on the way to The Ralph. That's how important I thought it was to share this nugget of wisdom we just heard from Emmitt Smith on ESPN Radio.

"If you want to stay perfect, you cannot go undefeated with a blemish on your record," Emmitt said.

Listening to Emmitt the broadcaster is even more painful than watching Emmitt the Cardinal.

I hate to say it but Emmitt sucks as a sportscaster. He hardly ever makes sense when he's talking about teams and players and he just comes across as really not having the verbal skills to be an anchor. Pity really, when you think about how good he was on the field.

Is it just me or does Emmitt not receive the same kind of love and attention that Aikman and Irving still receive in the Metroplex? I think it's true, heck, I think I'm even guilty of it myself. Mike and Troy stayed loyal to the Star, Emmitt didn't. I think that's why I hold Troy and Mike closer to my heart than Emmitt.

Posted by XR @ 4:52 PM Mon, Oct 08, 2007

As CSN&Y once said.....Sheer Profundity.

Posted by james muckleroy @ 4:54 PM Mon, Oct 08, 2007

yes, I heartily agree. As well as troy and darryl...and now, believe it or not, mike is tolerable- now that he controls his mouth a little more....cardboard personas. But back to emmitt- great back- terrible speaker. He has that illterate habit of ...you see, i'm screwing up my grammar just trying to describe it- not putting s's (?) on the end of words- or not agreeing in verb or subject...I won't provide examples- but let's just say I find it absurd....and not uncommon....FWIW....

Posted by thepainster @ 4:55 PM Mon, Oct 08, 2007

Yikes, looks like Emmitt is doing to the English language, what he did to NFC East defenses, he is mangling it!

He should have hung up his spurs, after Dancing with the Stars.

Posted by james muckleroy @ 4:57 PM Mon, Oct 08, 2007

...oh yeah, much less is my bad habit of using ellipses (Sp?)...for those of you with a clue....or hyphens!!!!!-

Posted by Big Tom, NYC @ 4:57 PM Mon, Oct 08, 2007

Did someone say Magic Johnson?

Posted by Raoul Duke @ 5:00 PM Mon, Oct 08, 2007

The guy's a joke. My ears literally bleed every time I try to make sense of the malapropisms, botched metaphors, and plain bad grammar that seeps of that yap like undiluted sewage. It defies reason that such a prominent gig would be given to someone who holds a child-like command of the English language.

Posted by Habib @ 5:02 PM Mon, Oct 08, 2007

It is not only Emmitt,it is the whole gang at ESPN that is unlistenable.

Posted by david @ 5:03 PM Mon, Oct 08, 2007

I cant believe I just wasted 45 seconds reading this useless crap....who cares?

Posted by Gary @ 5:05 PM Mon, Oct 08, 2007

Hold up Raoul. He's still a Cowboy. Tread lightly (even if you're correct). BTW I wonder how much of Emmitt being a Cardinal had to do with Parcells (see Larry Allen).

Posted by LJ @ 5:07 PM Mon, Oct 08, 2007

I HATE TO SAY IT BUT I DONT GET IT.I KNOW IM SLOW CAN SOMEONE EXPLAIN IT TO ME.I KNOW EMMITT SUCCS ASS A COMMENTATOR.

Posted by Donovan @ 5:10 PM Mon, Oct 08, 2007

It's possible that the point he was trying to make is that "perfect" and "undefeated" aren't necessarily the same thing. If the Patriots go undefeated, their perfect season is in doubt due to the blemish caused by the spycam controversy.

That, or Emmitt stinks as a broadcasting analyst. Take your pick.

Posted by tyler @ 5:21 PM Mon, Oct 08, 2007

It sucks because the rest of the triplets, and DJ, have been decent broadcasters. Emmitt. Wow, just a verbal train wreck. It's all ghetto talk w/him. Par for the course at ESPN.

Posted by Andrew @ 5:30 PM Mon, Oct 08, 2007

I love Emmitt for what he did for the franchise, but yeah ... he's definitely not a linguist.

Next great RB to turn into horrible commentator; LaDainian Tomlinson. He'll definitely get a commentator gig after he retires, as he's a great RB and a class act - but he simply can not interview well.

Emmitt and LT should get a radio gig with Shannon Sharpe. It'll be called, "Huh?"

Posted by DissentingVoice @ 5:31 PM Mon, Oct 08, 2007

No one is worse than Shannon "Mushmouth" Sharpe.

Posted by kamleon_o @ 5:31 PM Mon, Oct 08, 2007

I'm with LJ. I just want someone to get out their decoder ring and tell me what Emmitt just said.

Posted by BigTex84 @ 5:31 PM Mon, Oct 08, 2007

I would rather have a loud, honest, and bold Michael Irvin than what they have on there now. Someone please tell Keyshawn it's not called "KSPN"!

Yesterday he stuffed something in Mike Ditka's mouth!!! WOW!!! He's angry at The Cowboys and The Panthers...journalists are to be unbiased!! He yells at everyone and provides no insight. I love Emmitt, but he is not smooth and seems like he's speaking a different language!!

T.O. was right!! It's all about Sunday Night Football!!!

Posted by Not So Crazy Ray @ 5:36 PM Mon, Oct 08, 2007

It pains me to say it, because Emmitt might be my favorite athlete of all-time, but he's absolutely terrible as a broadcaster. I think my "favorite" line from him was when he referred to Randy Moss, saying "a leopard can't change his stripes." Sigh.

Posted by MUDDCATT @ 5:39 PM Mon, Oct 08, 2007

I would rather put up with a football player that doesn't have command of the English language than a frigging President of the U S.

Posted by Ray @ 5:44 PM Mon, Oct 08, 2007

Broadcast Karma rolling around on ol' Mr Smith--How many times did he show his distaste for the big, bad sports media by refering to "Them" or "You"?! I really appreciate what he did for the Cowboys when he was here (he was paid quite well for it), but for every overachievement he made on the football field, he has overachieved as broadcast anthrax!

Posted by old @ 5:45 PM Mon, Oct 08, 2007

You're right, MUDDCATT, if I hadn't seen the source, I would have thought it was a Bush quote.

Posted by Muy Chile @ 5:49 PM Mon, Oct 08, 2007

Tim thanks for the belly laugh!

Posted by Ciao ciao @ 5:54 PM Mon, Oct 08, 2007

Emmitt needs to be limited to one noun and one verb at a time, focusing diligently on making them agree. Once he demonstrates mastery of this difficult task, he can then contemplate such daring maneuvers as adjectives, adverbs and, steady now, compound sentences. Until then, he should stay home, pick his teeth and whittle.

Posted by Calhoun @ 6:02 PM Mon, Oct 08, 2007

Can someone tell emmitt that when you convey a question to someone, the correct word is "ask", it is not "aks". I've noticed most African Americans pronounce it this way, which is fine as long as they're not in broadcasting

Posted by kameleon_o @ 6:05 PM Mon, Oct 08, 2007

One thing I will say about Emmitt. He may not have the verbal skills of an Aikman or Johnston but at least I always know which team Emmitt used to play for. He's the biggest Cowboys homer of all our former players turned broadcasters. He really likes to remind Steve Young about those '92 and '93 Cowboys teams that beat Young's Niners.

Posted by Ken In SA @ 6:08 PM Mon, Oct 08, 2007

When I am tempted to criticize Emmitt, I remember the NY game and him pounding into that huge defensive line, getting up and walking back to the huddle with one arm limp at his side. Over and over and over again. Dude gets a lifetime pass from me for that game alone, not to mention the 3 rings.

Posted by HF @ 6:13 PM Mon, Oct 08, 2007

Why does this Danny Bonaduce lookalike go against us as well as any other no name reporter...on the bandwagon? Maybe 10% but the other 90 have been lifelong like I have been. Sheesh it's the Bills...I think New England is behind this rude treatment...can't spy no more (like that would do any good) now they move on to obvert espionage!

Posted by Dryw @ 6:30 PM Mon, Oct 08, 2007

Ken speaks for me, too! With that and so many other games, Emmitt earned the right to butcher the language however he likes. On national TV if he so chooses. He will always be the best in my book!

Posted by drew @ 6:31 PM Mon, Oct 08, 2007

well im actually relived,,, i really thought i was the only one that thought emmit sucked as a broadcaster,,im still stunned that espn didnt keep irvin on board with espn,, he was outstanding at what he did,,,maybe he is waiting for the monday night booth,, he could revive the monday night spotlight,,,just a thought,,, oh by the way steve young isnt too much better,, ty drew

Posted by BigTexKahuna @ 6:35 PM Mon, Oct 08, 2007

Emmitt said that? I hope he gets some professional help with his HOF acceptance speech...

Posted by Scott @ 6:35 PM Mon, Oct 08, 2007

I think it speaks to the failure of the public school system and the joke that is "student-athlete" in collegiate athletics. The conjugation of nouns and verbs and use of compound sentences should have been learned in elementary school. To Calhoun - I am African American and do not use "aks"...please be careful of generalizations.

Posted by Pablo @ 6:40 PM Mon, Oct 08, 2007

OK.. he is not Bob Costas or Joe Buck, but he is entertaining and I kind of think of him as a black Yogi Berra. I like him. I also think Darren Woodson and Emmitt us a great player's insight.

Posted by Calhoun @ 6:42 PM Mon, Oct 08, 2007

Scott, what I said was not generalization. What I said wasn't racist. What I said was fact. You of all people should agree with me. I never said it was wrong, just not appropiate for a network broadcaster to use words that you can't pronounce. I want broadcasters to TRY to speak as well as an averagwe teacher. He did Graduate college, didn't he? Black, white, or yellow, he should know better.

Posted by Rams Fan @ 6:48 PM Mon, Oct 08, 2007

You would never hear Marshall Faulk talk with such terrible grammar,,,but then again, Marshall Faulk was a St Louis Ram!

Posted by Tim @ 6:49 PM Mon, Oct 08, 2007

Hey, Emmitt is still better than Michael Irvin was at ESPN. And he is not all high and flashy and unprepared like Irvin was most of the time.

Posted by Sharon @ 7:07 PM Mon, Oct 08, 2007

Tim, I beg to differ with you. Michael Irvin was always well-prepared and he was outstanding on ESPN. He gave that set energy and I thoroughly enjoyed the show back then. Now it is very dull! By the way to my fellow blogger, I too am African American, and I know how to pronounce "ask."

Posted by gpaq @ 7:08 PM Mon, Oct 08, 2007

i agree emmitt stinks. but troy & moose do a good job.

Posted by Warden @ 7:39 PM Mon, Oct 08, 2007

Someone mentioned Marshall Faulk. That guy has a lot of potential as a broadcaster. He's buried on the NFL network, but not for long. Rod Woodson is also good. Sterling Sharpe I thought was the best ex-jock. And Tiki Barber, we hated him as a player, but he is good at what he's doing now.

Posted by Scott @ 8:18 PM Mon, Oct 08, 2007

Calhoun, I did not say that your statement was racist, just be careful of generalizations. I do believe that any broadcaster, regardless of color, should be able to speak basic english.

Posted by Scott @ 9:26 PM Mon, Oct 08, 2007

OK, let's see. Emmitt's live. I'm assuming you have the option of looking at what you have typed before you submit it. I'm also assuming this is not your first year in journalism. I'm willing to accept that Emmitt is a work in progress (hey he didn't win any rushing championships or league MVPs his rookie season) and maybe he isn't cut out to be a journalist. What's your excuse for your constant sniping at whatever target is handy?

Posted by Dryw @ 11:43 PM Mon, Oct 08, 2007

And if anyone else is watching the post-game, still on an adrenaline high, they will have seen that Emmitt is NOT afraid to be a homer and speak up for his team. Love of the Cowboys covers a multitude of sins in my world! :-)

Posted by What??? @ 9:24 AM Tue, Oct 09, 2007

Can someone tell emmitt that when you convey a question to someone, the correct word is "ask", it is not "aks". I've noticed most African Americans pronounce it this way, which is fine as long as they're not in broadcasting

Posted by: Calhoun | October 8, 2007 06:02 PM

+++++++++++++++++++++++
"most African Americans" DO NOT "pronounce it this way,"

Don't know with whom you associate...

Posted by JD @ 9:26 AM Tue, Oct 09, 2007

Loved Emmitt the player until he went to the Cardinals.

He is absolutely HORRIBLE as a broadcaster. ESPN needs to drop him immediately. Bring back Michael Irvin!

Posted by Sherm @ 3:03 PM Tue, Oct 09, 2007

I love Emmitt, he is no Troy, Michael or even Deon when comes sportscasting. I will also share this ESPN, CBS football sportscasting is totally blah. Move all Football to FOX

Posted by Goldie @ 11:15 PM Mon, Oct 22, 2007

Ok, I'm not alone. Emmitt is horrible as a sportscaster. But, I think his biggest problem is common to rookie broadcasters: Shooting off at the mouth because you have a lot of nervous energy and you don't stop to think. This can be fixed.

Emmitt needs a lot of work. It's also obvious that no one is working with him right now, they're just letting go.

If ESPN wants him to stay, they should give him a lot of work throughout the year in other sports etc. NFL Europe would have been a good place....too bad. It happens all the time though. Some guys are naturals, others are not.

But yeah, Emmitt stinks.
