Give Jerry credit for getting Romo deal done

LOUIS DeLUCA / DMN

Jerry Jones made it clear on draft day that he was committed to keeping Tony Romo in Dallas for a long time.

This six-year extension, which includes a little more than $30 million guaranteed, ensures that will happen.

Jerry probably could have saved a whole bunch of money by getting the deal done before the season. He opted to wait, wanting to make sure he knew exactly what he was paying for instead of throwing money at a guy with 10 starts under his belt.

Romo, 27, responded by passing for 1,984 yards and 16 touchdowns during the Cowboys’ 6-1 start, ranking second in the NFL behind Tom Brady in both categories. He eliminated any doubt that he's an elite quarterback, and that's the kind of contract he's getting.

"We know his value, and we're seeing his value to us winning," Jerry said after Romo's spectacular performance in the win over the Rams. "We want him to be the long-term Cowboy quarterback, and he wants to be the long-term Cowboy quarterback."

Jerry, great job on making it happen. So what if it cost him an extra $15 million or so?

Now the funs begins. I think for the first time Tony will understand what pressure is. Not that he will crack, he won't but I promise he will not be the same player now, that he was.

He will be better.

Posted by scott @ 6:37 PM Mon, Oct 29, 2007

He is getting paid as an elite QB because he is now, he will take care of business. Tony always puts the boyz in a position to win and he should against the eagles. Time for mcnabb to pass the torch to the new class of the NFC east which is Romo and Co.

Posted by Jeff @ 6:37 PM Mon, Oct 29, 2007

Now I know why Ms. Spears gave him that table dance. 70 mil makes a guy really cute.

Posted by chris graham @ 6:37 PM Mon, Oct 29, 2007

okay now get him some wide-outs like manning and brady got.

Posted by Vox Veritas @ 6:39 PM Mon, Oct 29, 2007

Told you guys that it would get done in the bye week.

Posted by Lee @ 6:40 PM Mon, Oct 29, 2007

Nice work Jerry. Well deserved contract for Romo. Aside from Brady and P. Manning, I can't think of another QB I would rather have leading my offense. He's only going to get better.

Posted by Steven K. @ 6:45 PM Mon, Oct 29, 2007

I think what this does more than anything is establish Romo as the de facto leader in the locker room. He's the highest paid player on the team now. He's the Quarterback. I mean we all know that Romo is well liked in the locker room, but I think players will look at him in a different light now. In a good way mind you. There is no longer a question of who the franchise player is. I think this subtle change will be the spring board for Romo taking this team to the Super Bowl.

GO COWBOYS!!!

Right Chris,

Got no problem with the wideouts Dallas has, but adding another top guy is certainly in order and niot a rookie, Jerry needs to get a top free agent in the offseason who has already proved he is just that.

Posted by Avery210 @ 6:51 PM Mon, Oct 29, 2007

Outstanding news. Not that we should ever doubt Jerry to do the best things for the Boys, but getting a bit worried this was headed for the offseason. Stupid me for doubting.

Posted by raff hollister @ 6:56 PM Mon, Oct 29, 2007

You know what though,

after further review,

I think the best thing the boys could do for Tony is bring in a guy who can really compliment MBIII in the running game.

After watching Marion this year I no longer see the need for a guy like DMAC who will cost the cowboys dearly draft choice wise as well as salary cap wise. They can use those choices for Cornerback and other needs.

What the boys need at running back is a guy who can really contribute at Marion's level to be the guy off the bench - and of course, say bye,bye to Julius. They may even have this guy right now on the practice squad in Alonzo Coleman.

Posted by Paulov @ 7:16 PM Mon, Oct 29, 2007

A top priority now must be to go out and get or draft(my preference)a young big play wide-out.

Posted by craig @ 7:23 PM Mon, Oct 29, 2007

So that's a little bit over $10 mill a year for Tony? Hmm... not that he isn't worth it, but that's gonna have some serious salary cap ramifications.

I think we were under by about 5 mill this year. I wonder who gets let go because of this.

Posted by milton thuroughgood III @ 7:29 PM Mon, Oct 29, 2007

There should be a "No Britney" clause in that contract.

Posted by milton thuroughgood III @ 7:31 PM Mon, Oct 29, 2007

Oh, and to speculate on who gets let go because of this:

Terry Glenn.
Jason Ferguson

As much as i'd rather not see any of these two veterans ever go.

Posted by modo @ 7:43 PM Mon, Oct 29, 2007

Good. I don't care anything about the deal, I was just sick of folks whining about it. Jeeze, people were acting like the world was coming to an end.

Posted by Raul @ 7:53 PM Mon, Oct 29, 2007

Locked up a franchise QB. How much of the cap hit can be absorbed this year (ie - the signing bonus). Give us details on the cap.

Posted by gpaq @ 7:54 PM Mon, Oct 29, 2007

good job jerry! one less distraction. he earned. remember how we felt last year against the giants when bledsoe threw that pick right before half? And now romo 12-5, 'boys 6-1 & as good as any team in the NFC. now that's romomentum!

Posted by Kyle @ 8:06 PM Mon, Oct 29, 2007

Great timing Jerry! Tony might be making enough money to support Britney's drug habit now.

Posted by Bill H. @ 8:17 PM Mon, Oct 29, 2007

Anyone else like to see Marion Barber and Laurence Maroney teamed up again? I swear I couldn't tell them apart if they switched uniforms... It'd be like having two Marions; always a fresh one to run in...

Posted by Steven @ 8:40 PM Mon, Oct 29, 2007

If I recall I believe we were somewhere around 10-12 million under the cap before signing Tank which didn't eat up too much. I could be wrong though. I imagine Jerry will put as much of the signing bonus on this years cap as possible. I want to say the yearly impact could be about 9 million which is nothing especially with the way the cap is rising. Just like now Peyton Mannings contract looks like a bargain, in a couple years this one will be what average QBs get.

Posted by mcindallas @ 8:46 PM Mon, Oct 29, 2007

i told you all that it would get done at the bye.

so what's the next topic of concern? wideouts? safety? cornerback?

Posted by Saint Jimmy @ 8:48 PM Mon, Oct 29, 2007

Craig, you need to realize that the salary cap is endagered.

Posted by Jay @ 9:24 PM Mon, Oct 29, 2007

Ya I wouldn't worry ab the cap, who even talks ab cap any more? Ya Ferguson's time is probably over. Too bad. But Romo's deal is the most important. If he is the real deal then that's what really matters. As long as he plays at a high level, the Cowboys will have success.

Posted by Paulov @ 9:38 PM Mon, Oct 29, 2007

Romo, now that he is officially the man, needs a young, big play wide-out drafted with a least one of those #1 picks next year. T.O. probably has one more good year in him, but I think Glenn is done. Hopefully after Flozell leaves after the season, Doug Free can seamlessly step in, and in time become a franchise type tackle.

Posted by patrick @ 9:53 PM Mon, Oct 29, 2007

no one gets cut this year. veteran contracts are guaranteed if they make the opening day roster. we are about 12 million under the cap this year. my guess is that this contract will eat up about 11 of it. keep some for signing in case of injury. great job.

ferguson and glenn are probably gone after 2008 one way or the other.

This team does not have salary cap problems, and this does not create one.

Posted by Mike @ 9:57 PM Mon, Oct 29, 2007

Give Jerry credit for getting the deal done? Uhhhhh who else was in the running for due credit? He's the GM and check writer right? Well, that pretty much narrows it down.

Jeez. When has Jerry ever not been able to get a deal done?

Paulov, with those physical gifts T.O. has more than one good year left in him. Don't let last year's broken finger and the coverage he draws fool you into thinking he's not good anymore. You guys did that with Galloway too. Thought he couldn't play when we didn't have a QB. Galloway sure has found a way to get it done in TB, so (enter wrong bid sounder for Price is Right) ... you guys were totally off your rocker on Galloway. Imagine if we still had him. Holy crap.

Posted by Bill H. @ 10:00 PM Mon, Oct 29, 2007

So you're saying that Jerry Jones does know what he's doing? Who'da thunk?
/sarcasm

Posted by Mr Rogers @ 10:41 PM Mon, Oct 29, 2007

Unbelievable that Jerry would pay Romo more than Brady, who just schooled him 2 weeks ago.
Here's how these negotiations should have gone: "Tom Brady makes $10 mil a year, and he's thrown 100 TDs this year. And he didn't throw 5 passes to the Bills. You're making under $10 mil."

It's also incredibly dumb of those who don't worry about the salary cap. Now Flozell is gone for sure. With Flozell, you can count on a penalty per game and a ProBowl trip per year. And some of you think Doug Free will step in seamlessly. Since Hudson Houck left, the Cowboys had not drafted one NFL quality linemen.

In a couple of years, when the Cowboys are trying to plug holes like offensive tackle, guard, wide receiver or cornerback, remember this deal.

Posted by StaninWichitaFalls @ 10:59 PM Mon, Oct 29, 2007

Jerry, you da Man!!!!! Instead of trying to Lo-ball Tony before the season (which might have fostered resentment later, after he proved his Stud-hood), he told him "Show me you're the quarterback I think you are, and I'll reward you for it". (Wow, long sentence...)

Tony did, and Jerry did.

Guys, don't worry about the salary cap. Barring a serious injury to Tony (heaven forbid!!), Jerry will manage this just fine. Contracts are made for re-working when necessary, and Jerry and Steven have proven to be quite adept at handling the cap.

Tony, congratulations!!! Now, if you can just manage all the press questions this week about your new contract, rather than the Eagles, game, you can take care of business the rest of the year.

Sure would be fun to have that kind of budget available for Christmas shopping, though...

Posted by Cowboy Elmo @ 11:22 PM Mon, Oct 29, 2007

Great Move. I will never forgive Jerry for the Jimmy debacle, but the man knows how to close a deal. The way the cap is rising, this deal will not affect the Boys at all. Besides, the cap may be a thing of the past in a couple of years. If so, I hope we become the Yankees of the NFL. Then, this Romo deal will be a bargain!

Posted by Brian @ 12:23 AM Tue, Oct 30, 2007

Mr. Rogers,

It's obvious from your comments you're too young to even know what you're talking about. I'll just call you Roger...

JJ will not be back, nor Fergi. TG will...and some other players will be turned out as well. But honestly, that's next year kids. I'm thinking about the Feagles this Sunday. I'll worry about who they draft late April when there's nothing happening...hmmm...never.

Posted by shahab @ 7:17 AM Tue, Oct 30, 2007

kudos to jerry jones for signing tony romo to this contract. he did the right thing by waiting. it might have cost him more to have waited but in the end he knows he's getting what he's paying for.

as a cowboys fan, you gotta love having an owner like jerry jones who is committed to trying to win a championship and willing to spend the money necessary to try and do so. Living on the east coast just 45 minutes south of philadelphia, i see the difference between a cheap owner like jeffery lurey who just wants to stay competative but isn't really committed to spending the money to win it all and an owner like jerry jones who is.

Posted by mattyinnj @ 7:20 AM Tue, Oct 30, 2007

Romo is NOT paid more than Brady. Brady had a huge deal that has been renegotiated in each of the last 2 offseasons to lessen the cap hit. He gets 10M+ roster bonuses...he's not hurting for cash. Romo got a good deal at market value. Now that he has his (insert-greg-ellis-gag-here) commitment from the team, lets just hope he keeps focused and remembers the ultimate goal - Lombardi trophies.

BTW...wonder if he has incentive $$ tied into SB wins??
