Some of you folks are already fretting about Jason Garrett leaving for a head coaching gig after the season. My advice is to chill out, enjoy the ride and worry about that when the time comes. Oh, and read Todd Archer's column today for a reminder that Tony Sparano is also an awfully good coach. Sparano did a mighty fine job as a play-caller last season, when the Cowboys scored 425 points, their most since 1995. He wasn't as aggressive as Garrett has been so far, but Bill Parcells probably had something to do with it. Plus, you figure Garrett's style would rub off on Sparano. I'm not trying to take away from anything the Red Baron has done. He's been magnificent, which is why he'll be a head coach somewhere in the not-too-distant future. But Sparano gives the Cowboys a proven play-caller if Garrett goes sooner than later. |

Jerry will make sure Garrett isn't going anywhere. His HC gig will be right here.
Posted by Bryan @ 10:09 AM Wed, Oct 03, 2007
I don't understand why Garrett would go anywhere. Surely Jerry would pay him whatever it takes to keep him here. He can get good experience while being the offensive coordinator, then, when Coach Phillips dies, he can take over.
Posted by Rev. Jack @ 10:10 AM Wed, Oct 03, 2007
Ditto what LL said- if I were a betting man, I'd put money on Jerry and Garrett already having some sort of arrangement and/or timetable in place. So long as Red-ball proves his worth, he'll be the next hc in Dallas.
I think Sparano is the guy who gets lured away in the off season.

I say Pay Jason Huge money.. since there is no coordinator cap... Get Judd Garrett in here to complete the Trio... and after 2008 Tell Wade he has to either be the Defensive Coordinator / Asst Head Coach.. or that he has to go... Because I truly believe the Browns, Giants, and other teams will be available after this season. and with Edwards, and Winslow and Brady.. that Offense can be nice with Garrett.

I STILL say Wade Phillips was brought in to "fix" the defense and teach Jason Garrett how to be a head coach. Wade will retire in 2-3 years and Garrett knows it, so Jones will pay him enough and guarantee his succession to the coaching throne. Mark it down - Garrett is the next Dallas Cowboys head coach, whether 2 or 3 or 6 years. Jones may not be likeable all the time, but he's shrewd at business, and what more shrewd move than to plan something like that, for the organization's stability?
Posted by Brandon @ 10:26 AM Wed, Oct 03, 2007
Let's not forget that Garrett was hired BEFORE Phillips, and Garrett interviewed for HC not OC. Jerry isn't stupid. As Rev. Jack said, I bet Jerry has a deal worked out with both Garrett and Phillips so that Garrett can move into the HC position in a couple years and Phillips can become an advisor or consultant making a nice living with no pressures.
I bet Garrett is OC next year and HC in 2009, and then coaches the Cowboys in a "home" Super Bowl.

You guys are all dreaming.
Money talks, yes, but power talks too, and being a head coach is the ultimate power in the NFL.
If Jason is offered a head coaching job, Jerry's money will not save him. you gotta remember Jason played for the boys but he isn't from "these parts". Like Tim says, enjoy the ride this year with Jason. Sparano will pick right up where Jason leaves off and this offense will not miss a beat if Jason does leave.

Garrett doesn't deserve to be a head coach after only 1 year as an assistant. He's got a long way to go. He didn't draft the players nor did he sign the free agents. All he is doing is enhancing the offense which was already good in the first place. I credit Jerry Jones for the improvement we've seen so far.
If somebody wants to hire Garrett as a head coach then they must be really desperate.
Don't get me wrong, I would love to see Garrett being groomed to replace Wade but it seems like every one out there is getting way ahead of themselves.
I mean we're 4-0 and we're already talking about next year. Enough already!!!
Posted by Rafe Hollister @ 10:35 AM Wed, Oct 03, 2007
Larry is right, but I will take it a step further. Just because a guy is an excellent offensive coordinator does not mean he will be an excellent head coach.
Fellow by the name of Norv Turner comes to mind.
You guys are breaking out a gallon of annointing oil after a guy has called the plays on a team with a lot of offensive talent for 4-games. Like Tim says, this offense was dang good last year. Hows about we give this a little longer before we annoint Jason, like maybe at least see this offense against the Patriots, and on the road in NY and Phili.
Posted by PaulC @ 10:35 AM Wed, Oct 03, 2007
Jason Garrett has done well. He deserves the praise. But the product we see on the field is the work of Wade Phillilps. He is the one putting it all together. Do not discount THAT. Putting it all together. Jason Garrett obviously is a great offensive mind. But sometimes that's not enough. Look no further than Norv Turner as to why.
Posted by Cleve Moten @ 10:44 AM Wed, Oct 03, 2007
You seem to have accepted Garrett's departure as a foregone conclusion. What makes you think Jerry would even entertain the thought of letting Garrett go? It's not as if he has no choice in the matter, you know. And, if Sparano was comparable, or better, as an offensive coordinator head coach, don't you think Jerry would have figured that out by now? After all, he's worked for him for several years now and Jerry did interview him for the head coaching job before hiring Phillips. He could have also promoted Sparano to offensive coordinator without even bringing Garrett in.
There are ways and means available for Jerry to keep Garrett if he wants him to stay. Jerry went to some length and took some risks to acquire Garrett in the first place. He doesn't appear to me to be the type of owner to just let Garrett go now, after he has proved himself invaluable. I would be extremely disappointed, of course, if he did. But I'm sure if he really wants to keep him, he will exercise the options available to him to do so. Jerry's a smart business man. And like any good business man he loves options. People who love options generally don't paint themselves into corners, because that is the very antithesis of having options.

Nobody is fretting over this situation! The only time someone has mentioned it was Joe Buck on the telecast of the last game. But he is always starting up mess.
Posted by Mark @ 10:44 AM Wed, Oct 03, 2007
Can I make an observation, and not be raked through the coals about this? But it is something to think about and consider...
What if Jason Garrett is a better play caller than a head coach? Like Turner? I want him to stay here for a long time, but if he is a better OC, then so what? We don't know him as a coach because he really hasn't been one.
Is it really fair to say he would be a great head coach? I am playing the devil's advocate, of course, but only to stir up positive, I assure you.
Posted by PMS @ 11:23 AM Wed, Oct 03, 2007
Sean Peyton's quick crash landing will temper other teams' enthusiasm a little bit to hire Garrett as a HC next year. TWO years from now, if this continues, then yeah, he'll get hired away unless he has a deal in place.
Now that Sparano can talk to the media, he'll be getting attention, too, and he would jump in a NEW YORK minute.
Posted by DougO @ 11:23 AM Wed, Oct 03, 2007
Personally, I hope Wade is the Cowboys head coach for the next ten years, because that would mean they have had another long series of Superbowl runs. I hope Jerry can keep Garrett in Dallas somehow during that time.
Posted by Bill in DC @ 11:36 AM Wed, Oct 03, 2007
As nicea guy as Wade Phillips appears to be, I'd bet my mortgage payment (which is considerable) that, if Garrett gets an offer to be a head coach next year, Jerry will fire/demote Phillips and give the HC gig to Garrett.
Personally, I think Garrett needs 2-3 years as an OC/Asst HC before he's ready to be a HC and that Phillips will decide to retire or switch to being the D Coordinator when that time comes.
Maybe Jerry will start a trend and have two head coaches, HC Defense, HC Offense, with himslef as the final arbiter between the two.
Posted by Jamie @ 11:44 AM Wed, Oct 03, 2007
Based on their performance thus-far (realizing this is only 1/4th of the way through the season), I hope Jerry will pay through the nose to keep both Sparano and Garrett around.
Posted by bellis @ 11:49 AM Wed, Oct 03, 2007
To those who are claiming Garrett & Jones probably already have some deal in the works, think again. We have a 4 - 0 head coach in his first season here. Assuming the success continues, Cowboy fans would be ready for a lynching if Jerry let Wade go. Wade will NEVER take a demotion to stay here. Take a look at the salaries of OC/DC vs. Head Coach. I personally hope Jerry does everything he can to keep all 3 here - Garrett, Philips & Sparano. This, however, doesn't seem likely, given the success so far. But I don't see Garrett going anywhere at the end of this season...probably the year after. By the way, does Jason Garrett have the temperament to be a HC? I'm sure someone will give him a shot though in the next few years. One question...has anyone ever gone from HC to a coordinator position? It would shock me, but I just don't know.
Posted by Brian M., Atlanta @ 11:52 AM Wed, Oct 03, 2007
Unlike 'bellis' I agree with those who have stated a belief that Jerry has a "deal" in place behind the scenes with both Wade and Garrett. Jerry saw a great assistant in Payton walk away, forget about the Saints start to this season, and he won't allow it to happen again. Wade is the HC for THIS season, and if Garrett wants the HC next season I feel it's his and Wade will be just fine with that given their agreement with Jerry. If the agreement was to allow Wade to HC for two seasons then that's the deal, but I fully believe Jerry has something worked out with Garrett to insure he goes nowhere.

Timbo, you are right about Sparano and Garrett. But would'nt it be nice to keep them both a couple of years; have your cake and eat it?
Posted by dbk @ 12:06 PM Wed, Oct 03, 2007
My question is who is most important: Wade P. or Jason G.? Perhaps the question can be framed as follows: what fell apart last year? Yes, the offense suddenly hit a wall but wasn't it the D that couldn't get anyone off the field? Gave up big plays? I suppose either answer (or both) is correct which takes me back to the first question: who is most valuable or important to the team? Phillips or Garrett?
Posted by Robert @ 12:10 PM Wed, Oct 03, 2007
Sparano is a goner. He goes to New England and New Engalnd OC's gets an HC job.
Garrett -- who knows. I think he leaves unless Wade goes.
Posted by RL @ 12:12 PM Wed, Oct 03, 2007
Jerry won't let Garrett get away. He'll give him a huge raise, the title of assistant HC, and a guarantee that he will be the next HC when Phillips retires in 2-3 years.

WHATS UP WITH THIS "Some of you folks are already fretting about Jason Garrett leaving for a head coaching gig after the season" GARBAGE?
FOR THE PAST SEVERAL YEARS JERRY JONES HAS HAD PRETTY GOOD COACHES GROOMED IN HIS ORGANIZATION, ONLY TO HAVE THEM GO ON TO OTHER PLACES TO BE SUCCESSFUL COACHES THUS LEAVING COWBOY NATION AND JERRY JONES IN A PRECARIOUS POSITION OF WONDERING WHO OUR NEXT COACH WILL BE? OR HAVING TO SETTLE ON SOME OLD RETREAD. JASON GARRETT IS A REAL COWBOY FROM OUR MICHEAL, EMMITT, AND TROY SUPER BOWL TEAMS!
FOR QUITE SOMETIME THE DALLAS COWBOYS LACKED AN OFFENSE CONSISTNECY IN SCORING AND CONFIDENCE WONDERING IF WE FELL BEHIND COULD WE COME BACK? SO WE SUFFERED WITH 1, 2, 3 POINT OR SO GRUELING WINS AND LOSES (SEE THE PLAYOFFS LAST YEAR). JASON GARRETT HAS CHANGED THAT, NO MATTER WHAT THE SCORE COWBOY NATION FEELS THAT WE CAN COMEBACK HOW EXCITING!
FINALLY WHAT TYPE OF COACH WOULD HE BE, TAKE A LOOK AT THE AGGRESSIVE, INTELLIGENT, WELL PREPARED AND CONFIDENT OFFENSE THAT WITH PRETTY MUCH THE SAME GROUP PLAYERS WAS QUITE INCONSISTENT LAST YEAR.
MEMO: TO JERRY JONES, "LOCK JASON GARRETT UP" KEEP THE SUBLIME COMBINATION OF TONY ROMO AND JASON GARRETT TOGETHER OR FIND YOURSELF SEARCHING YET AGAIN FOR ANOTHER OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR, CONTINUITY, AND DARE I SAY IT ANOTHER HEAD COACH!

It amazes me that some of you believe that those of us who believe that Jerry has a plan to keep Garrett would be "dreaming." Jerry was not always smart in some of his previous decisions, but he has learned and knows when he has a good thing and how to protect it. Remember when he was making a run at Mike Martz when he was OC at St. Louis? Well the Rams knew how hot of a commodity he was also, and they basically locked up Martz with a raise before Vermeil decided to retire...and they also had an "arrangement" for his promotion when Vermeil did actually retire. If Garrett proves out and others come after him, either Jerry protects him for a reasonable amount of time until he becomes HC or if Garrett can't wait and moves on despite the "arrangement," Sparano gets his chance to be OC again and basically becomes the next HC when Wade retires or--hopefully not--gets fired for not winning enough.

Sorry, I don't totally buy the "Sparano was handcuffed by Parcells" scenario. Physically, look what Garrett has done in moving TO around, utilizing the tight ends more, and using Witten as a downfield threat. Psychologically, he has TO eating out of his hand b/c he is telling (and showing) TO he is the playmaker. He has Romo playing loose and making plays, not being the bus driver. And he's done all this w/o having Terry Glenn to stretch the field. Garrett and Romo may be shooting stars for all we know, but right now these guys look like legends in the making.
Posted by Billy Reed @ 2:26 PM Wed, Oct 03, 2007
You know guys, we really need to get real here. If the 'Boys were 12-0 instead of 4-0, we still wouldn't be a lock in the East. It's still a long way til we worry about this stuff.

Fannie Said: "JASON GARRETT IS A REAL COWBOY FROM OUR MICHEAL, EMMITT, AND TROY SUPER BOWL TEAMS"
Uh, Jason is from Princeton and he carried a clip board until he left.
Garrett will go where he gets the best job -- Money and Control.
Posted by Robert @ 2:32 PM Wed, Oct 03, 2007
Funny, I don't see anyone blaming Parcells for Garrett maybe leaving.
More funny, no one is complaining about Peyton being in New Orleans.
More more funny, all the love for TO and he is still dropping passes at an alarming rate.
Posted by Steve @ 2:59 PM Wed, Oct 03, 2007
The New York Giants (among other teams) will be looking for a coach, and it's a safe bet that Garrett and Sparano will both be candidates. As far as Sparano being handcuffed to some degree last year, it's totally possible - Keep in mind that Zimmerman wanted to try some adjustments last year on defense but was shut down by Bill in favor of a more conservative approach.
Posted by Carl L @ 3:09 PM Wed, Oct 03, 2007
I really hope Jason stays. He is a part of the Cowboys' family now. I know that Jerry, the fans, and the players all want Red Ball to stick around for a long, long time. But Sparano is an excellent coach. He could be the next head coach if Jason Garrett decides to take a job elsewhere.
Posted by Raff Hollister @ 3:22 PM Wed, Oct 03, 2007
Well lookie here, Robert/Maureen is back.
Maureen, as you well know, Fannie was referring to the fact that Jason played for he cowboys as being a real cowboy, not where he went to college.
Blaming Parcells for Garrett maybe leaving?
Huh? I do believe Parcells is no longer around.
No connection at all here.
No one is complaining about Peyton in New Orleans because that is last year's news, Just like the Tuna.
T.O. is NOT dropping balls at AN ALARMING RATE you ninnie. He has dropped some, but so have Crayton and Witten. None of them will catch everything.
You are a real piece of work Maureen. You hate the cowboys so much you just manufacture stuff against them. Objectivity will never stand in your way.

Tony Sparano is a solid coach but he is overrated, especially as an offensive coordinator. Our running game this year is not as good as we think. Our pass protection benefits from a mobile Romo and receivers who get open. Tony Sparano goes from a tight ends coach to head coach in the NFL based on what???
T.O. is the main reason why our offense produced points last year and this year (not Coach Sparano) compared to the 2005 season. I wish Jason Garrett had total control of the offense, including the schemes, technique, and plays in the ground attack too. We might actually see improvement and consistency, not just the benefit of a massive o-line wearing down the opposition in the 2nd half.
But when you DEMOTE someone like Sparano, but want to retain their services you have to give them some control over something. His reward? Assistant Head Coach and Running Game Coordinator.

CUT THE NOISE "Uh, Jason is from Princeton and he carried a clip board until he left."
MICHEAL IRVIN WAS FROM (MIAMI), (EMMITT) FLORIDA, AND TROY AIKMAN (UCLA). PLEASE LETS USE A LITTLE COMMON SENSE.
JASON GARRETT WAS PART OF THOSE TEAMS, AND I BET HE WAS CONSIDERED BY THOSE PLAYERS TO BE A GOOD TEAMMATE WITH OR WITH OUT A CLIP BOARD IN HIS HAND, AND I SEEM TO REMEMBER WHEN AIKMAN GOT HURT "Jason Garrett - Leads Dallas to thrilling 42-31 win over Green Bay in 1994".
FINALLY AGAIN LETS USE A LITTE COMMON SENSE;
HE PLAYED ON THOSE TEAMS, CONTRIBUTED ON THOSE TEAMS WHEN ASKED, WHICH IN MY BOOK MAKES HIM A DALLAS COWBOY AND PART OF THE COWBOYS FAMILY.
PS..WHEN SEAN PEYTON LEFT, I WAS EXTREMELY HEATED AND MADE MENTION OF IT NUMEROUS TIMES ON THE BLOGS AS WELL.....AND WHY WOULDN'T I AFTER ALL I AM TIRED OF SEEING OUR "YOUNG" COACHING TALENT LEAVE AND IF YOU ARE A TRUE COWBOY FAN YOU WOULD BE TO.
