OK, I'm gonna give this a try. It won't be anything close to word for word, but I'll try to hit the highlights. Follow the jump for Tony Romo press conference fun. You can listen here. 12:58 -- No Romo or Jerry sighting yet. We do see a big ol' banner of a JerryWorld drawing set up behind the table where the important people will set. Jerry never misses a chance to congratulate himself on a national stage, huh? 1:01 -- Important question from Ch. 8's Linda Ting: Will Romo be dressed up in a fancy new suit? My guess is he'll just sport some Cowboys gear. ... We're on Jerry time, so we'll start a little later than the announced 1 p.m. time. 1:07 -- Ramiro and Joan Romo, Tony's parents, were the first ones through the door. They're sitting to the right of the table. From left to right at the table: Wade Phillips, Romo, Jerry and Stephen Jones. Agent Ken Kremer is sitting off to the left. ... Romo is sporting a Cowboys golf shirt, jeans and tennis shoes. 1:11 -- Jerry is rambling and probably will be for a while. He's talking about the negotiation of Romo's previous contract, when he told Jerry and Bill Parcells that he needed to get on the field. 1:13 -- I think Wade Phillips is about to nod off. 1:15 -- Jerry mentioned how much Romo's work ethic and willingness to improve factored in his decision to make Romo rich. "The last thing I want to do is make it seem like we've reached a goal," Jerry said, "because all we're doing is starting. We're just starting down the road." ... Jerry handed the mic over to Phillips now, right before Wade started snoring. 1:17 -- Phillips gushed for a couple minutes. He raved about Romo's talent -- "as quick a release as I've ever seen" -- and his intangibles. He mentioned that one of the great things about Romo is that he doesn't have a huge ego and is a great teammate. "It's appreciated by the coach, certainly," Phillips said. 1:24 -- Romo talked about how the Cowboys' commitment to him means more than the fact that he's filthy stinkin' rich now. He jokingly changed his tune when asked what would be different now that he has an eight-figure bank account. "I think I'm definitely a better person now because I have more money," he said. 1:26 -- Jerry called Romo "the man of the 2000s," whatever that's supposed to mean. 1:28 -- Best moment of the press conference so far: Romo thanked Jerry and offered a handshake. They ended up doing a homie handshake -- one of those lock-at-the-thumb-and-make-a-fist deals. Jerry's the coolest geezer in the world. 1:30 -- Jerry was asked about how they settled on $67.5 million, so he's really rambling now. "We looked at some numbers, tried 'em on, wore 'em around here for a few months," Jerry said. 1:33 -- How important is stability at the quarterback position? "When we had it, we won Super Bowls," Jerry said. "When we didn't have it, we didn't come close." 1:37 -- The Entertainment Tonight reporter fired off her question about Britney Spears. "Now we're gettin' to the real stuff," Wade Phillips said with a wry smile. Romo gave the same just-in-the-same-place answer as yesterday. Jerry followed up with the line of the day: "I tell you this, Tony. Sometimes they can smell fresh cash." 1:40 -- Jerry made it clear that this contract is not about rewarding Romo for a job well done. He's paying $30 million guaranteed to have a chance to hoist another Lombardi Trophy. "You've eliminated at least one of the reasons that you give yourself in the mirror as far as why you aren't going to Super Bowls. I wouldn't have done this unless I thought Tony could take us to the Super Bowl." 1:42 -- Romo: "Your goals always stay the same. You try to achieve something. You try to be a part of something special with your teammates, coaches and the organization." 1:44 -- Romo was asked about if he thought this was a realistic possibility when he was fighting for a job during his first training camp. He remembers thinking that if it was meant to be, it'd work out. If not, he'd find a way to enjoy life, probably as an assistant club pro at a Burlington, Wis. country club. 1:47 -- If agent Ken Kremer had his way, Romo never would have been a Cowboy in the first place. The Cowboys gave him a $10,000 signing bonus out of Eastern Illinois. "How can you go there when other teams are offering $25,000?" Romo remembers Kremer saying. 1:50 -- This thing had turned into comedy hour before PR director Rich Dalrymple cut it off. "You know," Romo said, "I really didn't get a chance to do anything in LA because I was on the phone trying to hammer this thing out." ... That's all, folks. |

Tim-
You just made it on National television, actively blogging for the masses. You have finally made it my friend, and have reached the pinnacle in the career of a Dallas Cowboys beat writer.
Congratulations, my friend.

I think I am about to nod off also. Jerry does like to hear himself talk.

Can someone ask him how badly we're going to beat Philly this weekend? We need some payback for the two drubbings we got last year!

greatness!
"I think I am a better person now because I have more money!"

I like the fact that Jerry didn't have to break the bank for Tony. I bet the Falcons, St Louis and Chicago wish they could have gotten a shot at him after the season.

As humble as he is, Tony has to be saying to himself, Hell yeah BABY.

Tim, please, I beg you. Please. Clobber the reporter that asked him about Britney. Please.
Posted by Chris @ 1:37 PM Tue, Oct 30, 2007
someone tell that ET chick to STFU!
Posted by KsDalFan @ 1:38 PM Tue, Oct 30, 2007
Some chick finally dropped the Brit Bomb. Jerr says sometimes they can smell fresh cash. Absolutely Fabulous.
Posted by Brandon in Connecticut @ 1:39 PM Tue, Oct 30, 2007
Well... it happened.
The dreaded Britany Spears question from the dumb ET girl.
Good thing Romo and Jerry were able to play it off with comic genius.
Posted by ap @ 1:40 PM Tue, Oct 30, 2007
I can see the headline now:
"Jerry Jones calls Britney Spears a Gold-Digger"
You're right - Jerry is the coolest geezer in the world.

I have to admit, I think ET covers the Cowboys better than ESPN.
Posted by SinCadenas70 @ 2:01 PM Tue, Oct 30, 2007
Thank goodness that the gay dude from the Tonight Show wasn't there. No telling what he would have asked Romo.
Posted by Mike N. @ 2:14 PM Tue, Oct 30, 2007
Good job, Tim. Jerry wasn't kidding about the fresh cash quip.

JERRY: Sometimes they smell fresh money!!!
hahaha

Just curious was that ET reporter a nice piece of Trim?? if so then her question was good and well timed, if not what a stupid question from a dumb ET girl!!

Ahh tim.
i give you all kinds of grief for the DMN blog's stealing ideas from a particularly popular cowboy's blog; but i have to give credit where credit is due: your 1:13PM post made me laugh out loud.
Jerry was rambling.

If agent Ken Kremer had his way, Romo never would have been a Cowboy in the first place. The Cowboys gave him a $10,000 signing bonus out of Eastern Illinois. "How can you go there when other teams are offering $25,000?" Romo remembers Kremer saying.
Just another reason to like him as our QB. He felt he needed to play for an organization that was special. That they money didn't mean much. That knowing if he put in his hard work, he would show them he had the skills and dedication to achieving something great. He wanted to be a Cowboy.

Yeah, "I think I am a better person now, because I have more money".
Classic. That will be quoted for years to come, and will be Tony's catch phrase.
I just hope through all of this that his humility stays where it is. He knows not many get the chance to be where he is, and that there are many more men and even young boys that will never get the chance to play Pro Football, even though they may be the best at a particular position they will have never played.

that's true that other teams were coveting Romo if Jerry didn't get the contract done. I live in Chicago and was listening to sports-talk WSCR (the "Score") the other day and they were like, the Bears have to go out and get Tony Romo this offseason. Oops, looks like they'll need a plan B. :)

Where is RAMS FAN on here telling us how Bulger's contract is still better and that the Cowboys are stupid for signing Romo.
