We mentioned the Nov. 5 date, and with the help of Todd Archer in nailing down the figures, here's my calculations of the impact doing the Tony Romo deal now has on the Cowboys cap. First, the signing bonus. By doing the deal now, the Cowboys can spread it out over a seventh year, and take a $1.64 million hit now, and save $274,000 against the cap in each of the next six years. And by giving Romo a $4.5 million raise now, they can swallow that hit right away, too, where it would've been prorated as a "signing bonus" if it had been presented to Romo after Nov. 5. So on that end, the raise would've slapped the Cowboys with a $750,000 cap hit in each year. So in theory -- and the Cowboys obviously would've done the deal differently if it was after Nov. 5 -- the Cowboys saved themselves about $1.24 million each year for the next six years. Executive vice president Stephen Jones said that meeting the Nov. 5 deadline was not a motivation, but rather a residual benefit of the timing of the deal. He emphasized that were would've been other ways to massage the cap, and that the bye week was the primary reason for doing it now. "The bye was a lot more important in my mind, because you could spend some time and he could actually move his mind to that," said Jones. "Heck, today, we were sitting back there just talking about different things, and he was dying to get back in the film room and get ready for Philadelphia. ... "We were going to be halfway through our season, we were gonna get to see him play for half the year. Which, in his case, with what he did last year, it was more than a full season of performance and they were wanting us to get more comfortable because they didn’t like the idea of a split-type deal." The split-type deal Jones speaks of is much like what Matt Schaub got in Houston, where a big portion of the bonus money is due in the middle of the contract, leaving some financial insecurity for the player. |

I don't care how you break it down, he has done nothing to prove he's worth 60 million dollars. How many play-oo games has he won? I'd rather see Brad Johnson play for the minimum than to see good mony that could go towards Densive back help waisted. Romo has proved nothing. Another stupid move by Dallas.

Saint Jimmy-
Dallas has plenty of cap space to get a quality D-back-- but you can't go down to your local grocer and pick one up this time of year...
Romo is worth what he got.

Saint Jimmy,
You are a fool. Apparently you haven't been a Cowboy fan long enough to understand the pain we've been going through looking for a stable quarterback.
Start Brad, then what?
Romo has earned this in more ways than one.

Ugh, those last 2 words of this post. Boy are we really tired of those 2 words in these parts. Have we ever seen Albert and Parcells in the same room together?

Saint Jimmy, the same (if not a more persuasive) argument can be made for a certain backup first-overall-pick in Oakland.
This signing can be still be construed as a gamble, but what long-term signing isn't? The bottom line is that Jerry runs things, Jerry saw enough over the span of 17 games, and so Jerry signed a check.

Are you serious Jimmy? When an OG like Bigg Davis is worth almost $20 mil guaranteed. Then and extra 10 mil for Romo is no leap of faith. And the 'Boys will still have the dollars to go after a CB in the offseason, either by FA or the draft.
Posted by Saint Jimmy @ 4:30 PM Tue, Oct 30, 2007
Looks like I've got an imposter. Probably Rams B**** trying to up his cool factor.

This is the price for a QB. Think about it - if the Cowboys managed to get a top 5 pick from Cleveland and drafted a QB, they would be paying him almost as much as they are paying Romo.
I am a little surprised at the cap hit for this year. By my rough calculations, the Cowboys still have $5 million under this year's cap. I wonder if some other player contrct is going to get done in the next week?

Listen to Jimmy make try to crawlfish out of the "stupidest post of the year" award by blaming that other idiot. At least rams fan is stupidly funny. Your post was just plain stupid. BRAD JOHNSON? wow

I'd like to clear my name and encourage this cowardly b**** to reveal his real ID. I'm not a complete dumb*** like this punk. Need proof? Check out my comment on the Romo signing: http://cowboys.beloblog.com/archives/2007/10/deals_dead_on.html#comments

Saint Jimmy. You're an idiot if you believe that.
Posted by Saint Jimmy @ 4:38 PM Tue, Oct 30, 2007
Ahhh, it wasn't Rams B**** it was Bandwagon Brandon pretending to be me. How pathetic is your life that you have to pretend to be someone else? Need to look no further how I feel about Romo than this comment last night: http://cowboys.beloblog.com/archives/2007/10/deals_dead_on.html#comments
Nice try Bandwagon Brandon. You should have done your homework though.
Posted by Saint Jimmy @ 4:40 PM Tue, Oct 30, 2007
More proof it wasn't me. I actually know how to spell simple words like WASTED!!!
Posted by Chris @ 4:41 PM Tue, Oct 30, 2007
Brandon - What are you talking about? If anyone is trying to divert attention away from themselves, it's you because of your previous, ignorant statement.
Jimmy - Don't forget "defensive" and "money"
Man, I love blog posters.
Posted by Saint Jimmy @ 4:46 PM Tue, Oct 30, 2007
Bandwagon Brandon, you've just been exposed dude. I can spell. Mony? This ain't a Billy Idol song. Waisted? Even a 2nd grader knows the difference between waist and waste. Crawlfish? Never heard of that but I do enjoy a good Crawfish Festival. Do your parents know you're on the computer?
I like this signing of Romo. He gets what he deserves and doesn't break the bank for our team to add other quality players. http://cowboys.beloblog.com/archives/2007/10/deals_dead_on.html#comments
Posted by craigw @ 4:48 PM Tue, Oct 30, 2007
I kind of like "waisted" just because it makes a verb out of a noun. Carry on...
Posted by Larry G @ 4:50 PM Tue, Oct 30, 2007
Well, Saint Jimmy's credibility just left the building. I'd rather see Quincy Carter than Brad Johnson. QB'ing this team.
Posted by Brad @ 4:54 PM Tue, Oct 30, 2007
Saint Jimmy, why in the world would anyone care who anyone else is when nobody ever see's anyone in real life. Sounds like Saint Jimmy has low self esteem problems. Who care's if you're really you, or not? Get over yourself Saint Jimmy!
Posted by Saint Jimmy @ 5:04 PM Tue, Oct 30, 2007
Brad (or Brandon using another fake name with the horrible grammar and spelling), it's not about self-esteem. It's about credibility. You may not care since you're not an icon on here who has gotten multiple Big Board treatment. But I care cause there are people on here that read my comments and enjoy my insight. I don't care if someone dislikes me. There are plenty of those people on here too. But at least be a f'ing man and show yourself if you don't like me.

Hey, I knew when I saw the comment at the top of this segment that IT WAS NOT SAINT JIMMY.
I don't always agree with him but he is a quality guy who knows the cowboys and knows pro football. He would never make a post like that.
Fact is however, whoever posted that is correct. Romo isn't worth 60 million because NO PLAYER IS.
The salaries in pro sports is totally rediculous, BUT, these are the going rates for a franchise QB. You think that is bad, wait a few more years. It will get worse. Romo's salary is in line for what the market currently calls for.

Might be time they considered making people sign up to post on this fine blog.

I also think this was a premature signing. I am not at all sold on this fellow. However, we will find out in the next 3 weeks(Philly,NYG and not so much Washington).I do we remember December the last 3 years. December is money/man-up time. No qb has done that; Not even Romo. This my turn out to be another "Roy Williams" scenerio. This will atleast take the heat off RW and put it dead center on Tony Romo; Can you envision the signs that will come out if he stinks up the place in Philly & NY??? I will be over-joyed to eat my words; But as Bill Parcells would say "too late to worry now//// The bets been placed and the horses are at the gate".
Posted by Swidge @ 5:27 PM Tue, Oct 30, 2007
"Worth" is what a willing buyer is willing to pay to a willing seller, so I guess all these players are "worth" what they get. Certainly, some like www.profootballtalk.com are arguing that Romo got a bad deal and could have commanded a much higher contract on the open market.
Posted by Saint Jimmy @ 5:38 PM Tue, Oct 30, 2007
Thanks Raff, and I agree. I think it's really sad that pro atheletes get paid all of that money and the truly important people like cops, firemen, and teachers are some of the worst paid professions. What does it say about society when people playing childrens games and public servants in D.C. are multi-multi-MULTI millionaires and teachers are paid next to nothing?
But that's the going rate. I suppose if you've got money like Jerry Jones you can pay tons of money to have people play a game for your amusement. Horse Racing should no longer be called the "Sport of Kings" when NFL owners are paying 100 million a year (according to the cap) for people to play football. The day that horse racing gets THAT expensive is the day that they can reclaim that title.

"it's not about self-esteem. It's about credibility. You may not care since you're not an icon on here who has gotten multiple Big Board treatment".
Wow Jimmy, are we full of ourselves? An "icon"? Is that what you are? Who exactly annoited you this title? (did I spell that correctly?)
