Peter King dropped a pretty big bomb on HBO's Inside the NFL last night, mentioning that Wade Phillips wonders how much Bill Belichick's cheating aided the Patriots' dynasty. "You know, 5 and 0 New England against 5 and 0 Dallas. The league, the Patriots, everybody, they just want this Spygate thing to go away. But Wade Phillips this week told me something that I think a lot of coaches around the league and a lot of people around the league are still thinking and that is, 'Hey, New England was caught cheating and it is a black mark on their success.' Phillips, however, accused King of putting words in his mouth. "I didn't say that at all," Phillips said during today's press conference. "I think they would have won no matter what. I have no idea that it even helped them. They were a great football team, well coached. I don't see any way they wouldn't have won what they did. "I don't think that at all, and I don't know why Peter would say that. Maybe he thinks that." UPDATE: An HBO spokesman said King stands by his report. |

Is it me or do people always dispute what Peter King writes. Everytime I look up there is somebody else claiming they didn't say what King wrote. Peter King is such a freakin' joke. He is a Madden wannabe. The can only be one! A little "Highlander" reference thrown in there.

Hey, Peter. There can only be one!
A little "Highlander" reference thrown in there for your amusement.

I've had it with Peter King. The Sharpe dog looking dude with his east coast bias needs to disappear from the face of the earth. Just like his good buddy Parcells, just go away.
Posted by DougO @ 5:06 PM Thu, Oct 11, 2007
King Peter is a joke who will say anything to raise eyebrows. But he's right about how the thing just got overlooked by everybody so quickly. I mean, it was worth a half-million dollar fine. There must be something more to it.

I think Peter King should now be called Peter "Don" King. What the heck was that stunt all about? He's obviously trying to stir up controversy.

I use to like Peter King. But now I just think he's a blowhard who's opinions don't really matter to true sports fans. It always seems he's just doing and saying things that have no merit, only because he wants his name out there.

This guy says Dallas fans have no fire and no passion-

indeed he can be entertaining, but so many players and coaches over the years think that he's out of control. Just ask Deon Sanders what he thinks about him...after considering him a friend for so many years. I think HBO's Inside the NFL started going downhill when he was put over the production. The bottom line is that he is a freakin fake...he doesn't know the game as well he thinks. People like Dr Z of SI.com puts him to shame with his knowledge of the NFL. And what upsets me the most about this jerk is that he is the ringleader among Sportswriters with bias against older Cowboys and the HOF...particularly Bob Hayes. PK knows as much about the NFL prior to 1980 as he does about rocket science.

Peter King just wants to make some bulletin board material for the team he picked to win this game 3 weeks ago.
Posted by Wes @ 5:55 PM Thu, Oct 11, 2007
I'm sure Peter made up those statements for his friend Small Bill, in hopes of firing up the Patriots/Billacheat.
Posted by Buddy @ 7:26 PM Thu, Oct 11, 2007
..."more and more people around the league are starting to say, "Why did this thing just go away? Why didn't it get more traction?'"
King does have a point.
The NFL effectively destroyed all evidence against the Patriots, gave Belicheat his slap on the wrist, and moved on.
Yet Barry Bonds is still vilified for his alleged actions, to the point where baseball nerds ignore his home run record (and I'm not defending Barry, just stating the facts).
Perhaps football fans should make it a point to recognize the NFC champ - hopefully us - as the real Super Bowl champ, and ignore the NFL's handpicked champs, the Cheatriots.

It's no secret Peter is a Dallas Hater. He has rarely if ever writes anything positive about the cowboys, in fact I remember reading an article in SI in the mid 90's and Dr.Z made a rare positive comment about the Boys and at the end of the mag, King bashed the Boys pretty hard. Z hasn't been a lover of the boys either though. Any writer out of the East coast isn't going to give anyone else a prop because heaven for bid someone is better than an East Coast team.
Posted by jbsays @ 7:45 PM Thu, Oct 11, 2007
Anybody that reads P. King knows that he looooooves the Pats. So, this is just his way of trying to give the Pats some bulletin board material since the Boys have steered clear of that area.
Posted by Javone @ 8:45 PM Thu, Oct 11, 2007
I agree with you jbsays. There has been no trash talk...just mutual respect from both teams. Anytime there is no dirt to be had....some will be manufactured. How lame. If this was such a "bomb" why is he waiting til now to drop it? Don't worry, I'll wait......

Peter King is a terrible sportswriter whose claim to fame was the Giants beat writer during the Parcells years of the 80's.
He parlayed that gig into his current HBO/NBC and SI gigs.
His MMQB is a hodgepodge of personal boosterism, coffeenerdness, inane reporting ("I spoke to LT today and he said....", and personal observations as he rode the train.
He then says stupid stuff having nothing to do with football like his daughter's college stuff, Sopranos, and leftist, liberal politics.
For example, in November 2006, he was cheerleading the Democrats. He called conservative play-calling from some coach "a right-wing maneuver".
I wish he would just shut up and crawl back into the hole in New Jersey he came from. East coast fool.
Posted by Bob @ 9:51 PM Thu, Oct 11, 2007
Why would anyone worry about what King said. I would believe Phillips over King any day of the week. King and ESPN don't usually tell it like it is anyway. Every game this year we have gone through this. King and ESPN come up with reasons why the Cowboys aren't going to win that weeks game; and then they win. It must really grate on their nerves when they show how wrong they are all the time.
Posted by TSmith @ 9:51 PM Thu, Oct 11, 2007
they had a library of cheat tape that they had to turn over. If it wasn't helpful why waste the time videoing? If I had the Pats on the roster I would have an arm band on my D captains and have new signals just for the Patriots.

Peter King a.k.a BOZO THE CLOWN,
Is just doing what he does best. Try to make all the kiddies pay attention to his tricks. While he steals thier suckers.
NO ONE HERE CARES BOZO!

King usually trips over his EGO four or five times, every football season.
Posted by Aaron Davis @ 10:51 PM Thu, Oct 11, 2007
The thing that gets me is- Why did this thing just go away? Why didn't it get more traction?
Posted by Aaron Davis @ 10:59 PM Thu, Oct 11, 2007
And so what if Wade Phillips or any other NFL representative believes it is a mark on their success? I guess in this day and time it is worse to be critical of unethical behavior than it is to be the one behaving unethical? Belichick owes everyone an honest apology and he should be walking into each game with his head held in shame.
Posted by TSmith @ 12:54 AM Fri, Oct 12, 2007
Aaron Davis you nailed it. I guess the league owes these guys an apology for catching them. NFL channel and Espn are taking turns giving them the Hero shall overcome treatment. I guess we will all squirt a tear for this fuzzy feel good story of the year. Man I hope we pound them!
Posted by patsfaninpittsburgh @ 9:26 AM Fri, Oct 12, 2007
uhhhhhh Aaron Davis
Why did this go away?
Well let's review a few facts:
"Stealing signals" is not illegal. You can try to decipher signals all you want. That's why coaches cover their mouths and why teams change signals and give multiple signals.
Believe it or not, good teams change their signals.
"Taping" games is not illegal. The league specifies where cameras that tape the games can be located.
"Spygate" is based on taping from an unauthorized location. What can you conclude:
"Spygate" has not gone away. How do we know this? Well on the DMN blog, the average retard Cowboys fan is still talking about "Spygate" and is completely clueless as to the facts.
Peter King is still talking about it.
The league presented the Pats with a list of demands for materials. They complied.
The material was destroyed because there was unauthorized leaks of materials.
Also, considering that you bozos are clueless on the origional story; what type of conspiracy theories would you mastermind next. Talk about embarrassing.

Smells like Peter "BeanTown's Finest" King is trying to light a fire under his hometown boys before the game. I'd be upset if he wasn't such a ridiculous idiot.

Take a hike. The Patriots franchise has been good for how long? About a decade...come back after you have at least three decades of success. What the hell? I didn't see any one dogging Patriot fans here. And nobody on this blog has been talking about "Spygate". I don't give a rats ace about that crap. I just want to see some damn football! But leave it to an east coast guy to talk about this crap intead of the game itself.
Posted by Carl L @ 10:52 AM Fri, Oct 12, 2007
People that are bashing Parcells should shut up though. I know he didn't win a playoff game here but look at the roster when he arrived and when he departed. WE as Cowboys' fans should be greatful that Jerry hired Bill and kept our team from becoming the joke of the NFL. This franchise was in complete disarray before Parcells got here. Now, thanks to Parcells, we are heading in the right direction again.

Uhhhh Carl L
You might want to check out Wes, buddy, TSmith on this thread. Have someone read it to you. A few facts:
Go to the Boston.com Pats blog and see how King gets ripped as a Pats hater. Frankly, the guy is a self serving leech that deserves ridicule from all fans.
Get the facts correct on "Spygate". The problem is on the business end not the football end. The
NFL correctly guards the filming of the product for copyright purposes. This protects the broadcast networks and NFL Films is a major revenue generator. This also saves the NFL from any potential video leaks.
Do you think a musical and business savvy Garth Brooks would allow unauthorized taping of his shows?
Do you think that dude from Sienfeld would have preferred his skit was copyrighted before it was up on youtube?
Outside of the 70's and early 90's, when have the Cowboys been great?
Posted by Ken In SA @ 1:03 PM Fri, Oct 12, 2007
patsfaninpittsburgh, LOL!!!!!!!! "The problem is on the business end, not the football end". What are you saying, the NFL got mad because Belichek was making a film of the game to sell DVD's in Hong Kong or something? ROFL. He was filming the opposing coaches to steal signals. It isn't about money, it's about cheating, pure and simple. You are delusional if you think otherwise.
Posted by Ken In SA @ 1:08 PM Fri, Oct 12, 2007
PS to patsfaninpittsburgh - I am not a King apologist, but I suspect Pats fans problems with King have more to do with the fact that he (appropriately) won't let Spygate die a quiet death without an explanation of what was on Belichek's other tapes. All the other media have given the Pats an easy ride.
Posted by Ken In SA @ 1:25 PM Fri, Oct 12, 2007
PPS to patsfaninpittsburgh - I am still laughing so hard I can barely think. "Outside of the 70's and early 90's, when have the Cowboys been great". What?????? Here is some history for you:
NFL Record - Most consecutive winning season (20) (1966-85)
NFL Record - Most consecutive seasons with at least 10 wins (10)
NFL Record - Most postseason appearances (28, which includes another league record of 54 postseason games, winning 32 of them)
NFL Record - Most appearances in the NFC Championship Game (14)
NFL Record - Most Super Bowl appearances (8), two more than any other NFL team.
Tied NFL Record - Most Superbowl wins (5)
Prior to the NFL/AFL merger, the Cowboys played in 2 NFL championship games, losing one on the last play of the game.
The Cowboys reach the Conference finals 3 times in the 80's, losing each time.
The last 10 years have been a drought era, no question. We did, however, reach the playoffs, and therefore the Cowboys have been in the playoffs in each decade of the team's existence.

Hey ding-a-ling
Stealing signals isn't illegal. How they were taping was against the rules.
It's like saying that you can cheat on your favorite steer with the farm goat; you just can't do it in the hay loft. What's against the rules? Cheating on your steer or going at it in the hay loft?
Roy Williams used the horse collar tackle on Monday. That was against rules- you know the "Roy Williams" penalty. Since he broke the rules, he was "cheating", why didn't he turn himself in?
Jimmy Johnson has said they used to tape signals but did not find it useful. Would BB sell tapes-No- but if you allow unconditional taping someone can.
Once again, filming is strictly controlled to control the product. Why do you think we have copyright laws? Why does every NFL broadcast has a copyright statement?
It's only "cheating" in your eyes because you wouldn't know what to do with the film.

Carl - I'm glad Parcells took a hike because it was about time. Having said that, I agree with your last post. I hope Wade manages to keep some of the disipline the Tuna left behind. That is one of the keys to winning this Sunday.

Nice stats
Good numbers
Nothing great except for the 70's and early 90's.
Posted by Ken In SA @ 2:53 PM Fri, Oct 12, 2007
Patsfaninpittsburgh - Let me break this down for you slowly: It's cheating because it is against the rules. Do I need to repeat that? Sign stealing isn't againts the rules. Videotaping the signals to try to coordinate them against the playing calling is against the rules, therefore it is cheating. It's that simple. If you don't like it, change the rule. To say the NFL reacted because this was a violation of copyright is asine. By its very nature, these tapes were not intended "for rebroadcast without the express permission of the National Football League". They were not going to end up the sports bar or a DVD. They were being used by a team to gain an extra margin of advantage. The fact that Johnson did is irrelevant to the issue of Belichek's guilt. If Johnson did it, he cheated. While Johnson may not have found much use for it, it seems Belichek did.
If reaching the conference finals 3 out of 10 years in the 80's isn't "doing anything great" (your words) then I don't know what to say to you.

I think peter king is a idoit. Ane why do the patriots always need bulletin board material are they that sad. What they cant win by just playing the game the have to have some bull crap reason to get fired up. Every week it is something with them nobody respects us, yeah that is right cause they are cheatersssssss

Why the dumbazz act?
Roy Williams was just fined for the "Roy Williams" horsecollar tackle. It's against the rules!!! No penalty. THATS CHEATING.
By your attempt at "reasoning", he should have turned himself in. IT"S AGAINST THE RULES.
Is the NFL worried about copyright from BB. No dumbazz, but they take unauthorized filming very seriously. That's the league's revenue stream.
That is why they are extremely strict on taping of games.
Jimmy Johnson taped signals in the 90's and didn't find them useful. No big deal then, why now? Today with the internet and youtube, they have to be air tight on who videos the game.
