In light of all that's happened in coaching over the last year, and with coaches' families (the Dungy's, the Reids), Joe Gibbs has to feel lucky. He has a happy, healthy family still, after 24 seasons in NFL seasons, 16 as a head coach. But he has the perspective now to know that sometimes the commitment he and other headset-wearing types can go overboard. "I know some day, when I sit around later in life, I’m not going to say I wish I worked more," Gibbs said on his conference call with the Dallas media. "I think for all of us that are in coaching, there’s a huge price to be paid because it’s every day, there’s not a half-a-day off, and it’s all the things you miss with your family. ... "Now, there are some plusses, obviously. They got to go to camp with me. There were some plusses being a football coach. But I know for me personally, you miss a lot. That’s a constant thing that I know weighs on all coaches." Gibbs turns 67 this week, so retirement can't be that far off. And when it comes, he says he plans to commit to being around his grandkids, the same way he couldn't be around sons J.D. and Coy. But he'll also say he knows why he and so many others keep coming back. "It’s one of the greatest jobs in the world," Gibbs said. "You got tremendous highs and tremendous lows, but you do pay a price doing this." So when will Gibbs cash it all in? He wouldn't say. "I don’t answer that anymore, because no matter how I answer it, people will take all kinds of approaches with it," Gibbs said. "I started my second year here and tried to answer it, and I’m here in my fourth year and I’ve kind of given up. I told everybody, hey, I’m gonna choose not to address that one." |

Gibbs should retire. The game has obviously passed him by.
