Guaranteeing a Cowboys win

10:41 AM Fri, Nov 09, 2007 |
Tim MacMahon   E-mail   News tips

I've been real wishy-washy about my prediction for this game. I predicted this as one of the Cowboys losses a few weeks ago, but I've been hemming and hawing all week. I haven't been wrong on a Cowboys pick all season -- 6-2 against the line -- so I take this very seriously.

My final, official prediction: Cowboys 31, Giants 24. And I'm so confident about it that I'm offering a money-back guarantee. If I'm wrong, I'll refund every penny you folks have paid in subscription fees for this here blog.

When in doubt, distance from Calvin "Lucky" Watkins. The more confident Lucky got that the Giants would win, the more I began doubting my gut instinct. Anybody who has seen his (non-)winning percentage against the line understands this line of thinking.

Plus, I read this New York Post column predicting a Giants win. I figure nobody with a Liberace-looking hairdo has a clue about football. And then I read his reasons the Giants would win -- defense wins championships (yeah, the 2.3 fewer yards the Giants allow per game will be the difference), Plaxico and Shockey are jealous of T.O. and Witten (surprised he didn't mention Eli is jealous of Romo, too), the Giants had some injured players in the opener (no mention of Terence Newman and Greg Ellis), Big Blue fans plan to cheer (so did the Iggles' fans), and gosh darnit, the Giants have pride (most millionaires do). If he can't come up with anything better than that, I figure the G-Men have no chance.

Follow the jump for a few serious football reasons I'm picking the Cowboys.

*There was a bigger fluke factor to the Giants' 35 points in the opener than the Cowboys' 45. Tony Romo has played at a Pro Bowl level all season. Eli Manning has been average except for that game.

*The Giants' defense depends on putting pressure on the passer. Pressure doesn't bother Romo, who has taken Brett Favre's title as best freelancing QB in football.

*The Cowboys excel away from home, winning seven consecutive road games. Romo is too cool to let hostile crowds get to him, and that rubs off on the rest of the Cowboys. Weren't the Big Blue fans pretty loud when Romo hit Witten with that deep ball to set up the game-winning FG at Giants Stadium last season?

*The Giants might be able to cover either T.O. or Witten, but not both. With all the talk coming out of New York about containing Witten, don't be surprised if T.O. matches last week's 10-catch, 174-yard performance.

*The Giants have played two elite NFC teams. Average margin of defeat: 16 points. Reeling off six straight wins against mediocre teams doesn't change the fact that New York can't compete with the elite.

The Redskins DEMAND an apology!

It will be 53 degrees and sunny. A nice day for a Giant a** whippin! No pun intended.

I agree that Steve Serby (of the "Liberace-looking hairdo") is a drooling idiot. The only reason he still has a job is because most NY Post readers have the the IQ of a chihuahua and the paper needs someone that their readers can relate to.

Also agree that the Giants crowd isn't intimidating anyone. The crowd is kind of old on the whole and isn't known for making sustained noise for a whole game. The team is wearing their alternate red jerseys which is kind of stupid for a team known as "Big Blue."

That said, the Cowboys haven't beaten anybody decent either, besides the Giants. Dolphins, Rams and Bears, oh my!

Should be a good game. Romo can be forced into making mistakes as shown by his 10 picks which are more than the ever erratic Eli. The Giants should be able to get some pressure and their coverage with Madison and Ross has been much better than the McQuarters and Webster duo that got scorched in game 1.

I like the Giants on a late Eli touchdown to everyone's favorite example of the dangers of drinking while pregnant, Jeremy Shockey.

Posted by Robert @ 11:14 AM Fri, Nov 09, 2007

Not to be rude by NY Post readers have better advertising demographics than Dallas News readers.

Both education and money.

Still, Serby's column was stupid with a capital S.

Posted by craigw @ 11:20 AM Fri, Nov 09, 2007

A hilarious dis on Calvin. I hope you're good friends.

I could see that outcome pretty easily as well.

I wouldn't say pressure doesn't bother Romo, but it has to be a specific, disciplined kind of pressure. I don't think that's what the Giants are good at.

Posted by imajin @ 11:21 AM Fri, Nov 09, 2007

I know players around the league get injured every week but...Is it just me or do alot of players get injured playing against the cowboys? I remember the first game against the giants Umenyora (sp?!) and jacobs got injured near the beginning of the game. Chicago game - Lance briggs and nathan vasher... the list goes on.

Posted by mike @ 11:22 AM Fri, Nov 09, 2007

I think you should have written "Romo can be forced into making mistakes as shown by his 10 picks- half of which came in one game after he learned that his father was diagnosed with cancer and then he threw three passes to put us in position to win the game- are more than the ever erratic Eli. "

Remove on crappy game and this guy has been unreal. I have a jersey bet with a Giants fan and I DO NOT plan on wearing a stinking Shockey jersey on Monday.

Posted by s2h @ 11:24 AM Fri, Nov 09, 2007

Taken from Liberace man's article:

"Witten gobbling up yards after the catch after his helmet flew off the other night was positively Shockeyesque."

Give me a break....comparing Witten to Shockey is comparing Steak to applesauce. What has Shockey done this year (or ever) that could be compared to Witten's play last week. Nada.

Posted by Ron in Ft Greene, Bklyn @ 11:27 AM Fri, Nov 09, 2007

I think the Pokes will scrap out a win in the vast soggy plains of North Jersey as well, TM, but let me address one item of fear I have going into this game: Aaron Ross. Number 30 has snowballed his confidence since the first game of his pro career. The guy's major legit. Thinkin' he has more game-changing upside than Newman could ever hope to develop. Everyone's always clamoring, 'if Newman can hang onto those bad passes he'd accrue the numbers and get a Pro Bowl.' Whatever. He's solid; that's it. Ross could be great. Romo can't get Orchard Park on the Jints Sunday and expect a Folk hero to pull this one out. p.s., Toast-P: 'drinking while pregnant'--genius!

Posted by David @ 11:41 AM Fri, Nov 09, 2007

The guy who says newman is average needs to get his head checked because he is a big dummy. Take a look at touchdowns against him over the years. I will take the average newman over any corner in the league.

Posted by rp @ 12:04 PM Fri, Nov 09, 2007

if Newman is average then all the Giants CB's are below average..since he is better than all those guys

ny post readers are smarter and richer??? hey bud, i live in the big apple and i can tell you know nothing about ny post readers, that's a tabloid paper. i can't speak for dallas readers, but you just set the bar so low...i would really beg to differ

that's about as stupid as saying newman's an average corner. i just wish he'd hold onto some of those picks so he can get the credit from the media that he deserves, which is normally an almost complete shut down of the opposing receiver. henry is so much better at taking advantage of those opportunities. funny thing is, for the ignorant fan like our fort greene fan, they'd say henry is a better corner than newman because he has more picks, neglecting the fact that he gives up more passes than newman...

Posted by Cha-ka @ 12:24 PM Fri, Nov 09, 2007

Once I read New York Post, all credibility was thrown out the window.
Most newspapers are homers for the local team, but this articles takes the cake.

Posted by JV @ 12:30 PM Fri, Nov 09, 2007

There are lots of Cowboys fans in New York. I wouldn't worry about Giants stadium being loud.

Will (nyc), can you stop getting personal when somebody brings up a point? There is no reason for name calling just because you don't agree with their opinion. You did it to me when I posted a comment about why we didn't score more on Philadelphia. Witten makes an outstanding catch and helmetless run to the six-yard line and we settled for a field goal. You called me stupid or ignorant. It's petty and childish too.

I'm nervous about this game and can certainly see the Giants winning (particularly if we don't get pressure on Eli). That said, it's as simple as this: This year the Cowboys are the better team. If they play THEIR game (keep penalties in check, no stupid turnovers), they WILL win.

Posted by Saint Jimmy @ 1:22 PM Fri, Nov 09, 2007

Good job Tim. Nice reasons to back up your prediction. I'd like to add that the Giants can't stop the run so MB3 and JJ should have a good game.

Hey, I am curious, do any other teams have blogs like this? Take Neil, for instance; Neil, how did you find this place? I can probably guess how, but why come here? I personally don't care what other fans say about us on their sites, even if they had a blog.

It seems we attract a lot of attention from the fans of other teams. This does nothing more than prove that the Cowboys are "America's Team". Anyway, thanks for dropping by, Neil - and every other non-Cowboy fan.

The whole "America's Team" thing is a 1970's relic that has gotten pretty stale. The 'girls are America's team the same way that that the Yankees and Notre Dame are. You have big national followings when the teams are good but the bandwagons tend to get lighter in down years.

The Giants, Beagles and Deadskins, as examples, tend to have more hard core followings. Cowboys, Yankees and Irish fans also have the same annoying habit of constantly slapping themselves on the back for following what they believe is G-d's greatest gift to sports. Too bad your boys haven't done squat since '95 and you had to bring in Benedict Arnold Parcells to even be able to field a decent team again.

Nice weather Sunday will benefit Eli. He'll have a nice 3 TD 0 pick day against that soft Dallas secondary.

Posted by 5xSuper @ 2:33 PM Fri, Nov 09, 2007

TPatterson,
America's Team? Yeah I would say that, when Dallas clearly, year in and year out is the number one money maker world wide in the NFL. No one touches the Dallas appeal Nation wide, (or worldwide from statistics), except maybe a Yankee franchise. Only the Skins every now and then will bring in more stadium revenue, (barely), because they have 30,000 more seats. Natioanlly what other team besides Dallas has fans sellout all of the away games and can represent up to 35% of ticket sales to those games.(excluding in Philly, but Dallas fans are still there in the thousands). You can make an arguement for Pittsburgh and the Packers, but even that is a stretch compared to the following the Dallas Cowboys have and their marketability. Unfortunately for you Toast Patterson, We get a new stadium to boot, which Forbes states that the "Dallas Cowboys is and will be the most vauable franchise" for years to come. I almost forgot, hasn't every Dallas game this year been Nationally televised? They've moved 3 game times so far this year with more to come, so the Networks that held the Cowboys games could get ratings. Besides the Colts-Pats game last week. I believe Dallas had the top ratings again. As far as your band wagon statement... what do you expect your average fan to do, go ApeS*%t for a 5-11 team. Please... Lets just say I don't ever remember there being any Pats fans before this Super Bowl Run. Do you? Us DieHards are always around, trust me.Why are you on this blog anyway? Mind your own, stop the jealousy and "go sell crazy somplace else"... AMERICA's TEAM; YEAH THATS RIGHT!

Posted by Mark @ 2:40 PM Fri, Nov 09, 2007

Toasty,

I realize the term, America's team, maybe a bit antiquated, but the truth of the matter is that the popularity of the NFL rises and falls with the success of the Dallas Cowboys. This includes t.v ratings, and merchandising.

You don't have to like them, but it goes both ways - people watch them to win, and they watch them to lose - the point is, people watch them. They are the most popular franchise in sports, and in 2009 will be worth the most.

So, you tell me. Believe it or not, I live in North Carolina and I have seen every game except one on t.v. Anyway you look at it, the Cowboys have a quite a following, and whether they are bandwagon jumpers, which I assume a few are, the fact remains that they are for the most part, win or lose, the most recognizable team in sports.

Posted by 5xSuper @ 2:44 PM Fri, Nov 09, 2007

Mark,
I wish I had of broken up my paragraphs like you did. I was on a role with my rant. Just tired of outside bloggers... If Dallas isn't the premier team you love to love and love to hate, why come onto a DMN blog? oh yeah; Dallas 31 ny 17

I pay 39.95 a month in Internet fees just so I can access this blog. If the Cowboys lose, I'll expect a check in the mail for 119.85.

What's wrong with a fan from another team pointing out that maybe, just maybe, the Cowboys aren't the greatest thing that has ever existed in the history of the world? If it's that hard to defend them against one annoying fan then maybe they really aren't that great.

I agree that, like the Yankees, the Cowboys have the biggest love/hate following in the league. It's fun to root against them because they have obnoxious fans everywhere telling you how great they are. But it's more than a little overblown to say that the popularity of the NFL rise and falls with the fate of the 'girls. The popularity of the NFL has grown every year over the past decade and the Cowboys have stunk for at least half of that time.

I stopped by the Dallas Morning News site today to see what the local reporters were saying about the game. I made a few comments here because this is the biggest Cowboys-Giants game in years. I can't even remember the last time they played that it looked like either one could be the class of the conference. We'll find out Sunday which team's recent success is for real and which one was just kidding themselves by beating up on patsies.

Great post Tim. Keep up the great work. Your right TPatterson, we will see who is for real. And your NY Giants will be humbled by these 2007 Cowboys. All this talk about NY getting all their players back for this game. Well, this Sunday, besides playing against Ellis and Newman who they did not face in the last game, they will be introduced to a new element in this D in Tank Johnson. Sorry to say this, but Calvin Watkins does not know what he's writing about and I think he is even worse on camera. Must be a NY thing.

Posted by 5xSuper @ 3:38 PM Fri, Nov 09, 2007

TPatterson,
Actually, the NFL has grown in cities where they never had a chance before the salary cap. The Cowboy fans have always been there no matter what state you live in or year it was. What do think we all of a sudden ecame a successful franchise?

Jerry Jones was a leader on that commitee, and voted for the salary cap, so the NFL could become the greatest league; Even though he knew it would be detrimental to his own teams depth and success. Lets face it with no salary cap, Dallas had all of the money in the NFL to remain on top.

So lets thank Jerry for allowing others to have a shot at the title, instead of the Cowboys dominating year after year... and apparently allowing others to voice their opinions on a Cowboys blog.

Are we cocky fans? Yes!

Do we expect to win the Super Bowl every year or else it's a failure? Yes!

I guess thats what fans expect when their team has been involved in 55 post season games, 15 NFC championship games, 9 SuperBowl apperances, and 5 Super Bowl wins.

Thanks for stooping by the blog. Good Luck Sunday. Does that make you feel better?

Posted by Mark @ 3:53 PM Fri, Nov 09, 2007

Toasty,

There is nothing wrong with your opinion as someone who isn't a fan of the Cowboys. The Cowboys aren't necessarily the greatest team in history, but I and the others on here aren't defending them. We don't need to. The Cowboys, as a franchise, can speak for themselves.

It isn't overblown about the NFL's popularity rising and falling with the sucess of the Cowboys... this is simple just look up past television ratings... most of the highest rated football games and seasons were when the Cowboys were doing well. This isn't me talking, this is a fact.

If you wish I could point you to all the particular sites, but you can find it for youself, I am sure.

If you notice, most of the Dallas writers speak very impartial towards the Giants/Cowboys game. They recognize the weaknesses we have and how the Giants can exploit them, but conversely, they can point out the weaknesses that not only the Giants have, but every other team. No one is making any clear predictions for the season. We lost 4 of 5 last year, at the end.

Some of our writers are picking the Cowboys to lose, I have yet to see any Giant's writers do the same thing.

Mark

Here's a NY Daily News story that has 4 out of 7 writers picking the Cowboys:

http://tinyurl.com/35ks9o

Not all NY papers are as bad as the Post.

5xSuper

I won't deny that the Cowboys have quite a storied history for an expansion team but since '95 they have won one, as in uno, playoff games. Granted, over the same time period the Giants have only won 2 playoff games. But 2 is more than 1, right?

Also, while you're busy holding up JJ as the epitome of selflessness, remember that it was that crusty old drunk Wellington Mara who agreed to the original TV revenue sharing plan in the '60's. If he wanted to he could have taken advantage of the New York market and tried to turn the Giants into the football version of the Yankees. The old TV revenue sharing deal that Well so graciously agreed to helped launch the NFL and make it the juggernaut of the sports industry that it is today.

Posted by Mark @ 4:46 PM Fri, Nov 09, 2007

Toasty,

I stand corrected. Of course, I go by what I hear on t.v. and the radio. Being that I don't frenquent other teams sites very often.

One thing I will say, Toasty, you are a good fan. I give you credit for that. And you write with some intelligence, and passion, that goes beyond the usual, "My team is better than your team" nonsense.

Posted by Lee @ 4:48 PM Fri, Nov 09, 2007

one of the Giants' fans above mentioned that Eli will light up the Cowboys for 3 TD's and no picks. I won't argue with that, especially if the Cowboys can't apply enough pressure upfront. However, I would argue that 3 TD's is likely not enough to beat the Cowboys. I can see Romo throwing for 4 or 5. :)

Posted by 5xSuper @ 4:56 PM Fri, Nov 09, 2007

TPatterson,
Good comment. You haven't gone away yet though... At least you're paying attention unlike most of the infiltraters that come on here, say "Dallas Sucks" and leave some vulgar biligerant jargon.

2 points: 1. Everyone knew that if Mara did that it would be the end of the football league, just as Jones knew, if he wanted the league to remain successful, he'd have to sacrifice his own well being. With that said, he still is the benefactor of the most dollar capable franchise in the league.

2. You all would still be watching Dallas Cowboy games on that network because the networks want ratings. Unless he developed a GES network like the Yankees YES network. For the record that really wouldn't effect the market share for the rest of the country. I'm pretty sure the salary cap leveled the playing field, not the New York television market.

Dallas is building a Billion dollar stadium down here. Isn't taking 2 teams to gain the support of New Yorks Billion dollar stadium?

What have we learned from all of this?
Dallas Cowboys= money and ratings.

Now say it with me...

By the way, you shouldn't be so quick to go to the gay humor when your owner is a known plastic surgery enthusiast.

"Not to be rude by NY Post readers have better advertising demographics than Dallas News readers."

Uh, fellas, the NY Post is a RUPERT MURDOCH vehicle. That means that, whatever the income, education or age of its audience, the readers are STUPID enough not to mind having their news mixed with whatever line the Republican Party is dishing out each day (reading the Giants fans crashing this blog, I rest my case). The Dallas News is conservative in outlook, but is old-fashioned enough to keep its news and editorials separate.

Posted by Saint Jimmy @ 3:02 PM Sat, Nov 10, 2007

Toasty, it's obvious you're one of those 20 percenters who still feel Dubya is doing a good job if you can't take a little humor from Bill Maher. That makes you a complete moron and I'm glad that we will never have to put up with your stupidity around here anymore after the Gnats are basically eliminated from the playoffs with losses to the Cowboys and Lions.

Whoever said using gay jokes makes someone a homophobe? Only a moron would make that connection. I think you meant to say "someone who spews gay hate speech (ex. any Republican Senator/Congressman) because they feel conflicted themselves". But there are plenty of straight and gay comedians that joke about the gay lifestyle and that doesn't make them homophobic. Joe Rogan has an entire set about Brokeback Mountain being his favorite comedy film. Does that make the former Man Show (mmmm girls on trampolines) host a closet homo?

why do people (Cowboys haters) always make it seem that the 'Americas Team' label was started by Dallas fans or the Cowboys organization? Do they not realize it was started by the guy that does all those NFL films? (i forget his name) Regardless of where, in America, he went to cover a team there always seemed to be a high number of Cowboys fans, resulting in the label of "America's Team".

one more thing: Toast(ed), it is ok to spell GOD on this blog. not sure where you're from or what you believe but i highly doubt anyone here is gonna blast you for it. No the Cowboys are not "G-d's greatest gift to sports", football is. the Cowboys are a close 2nd.

Go Cowboys!!!

p.s: Giants are actually wearing red sunday to cover up the blood from getting their butts kicked.
