Gurode needs to lay off pregame fries

JOHN F. RHODES / DMN

Center Andre Gurode's endorsement deal almost cost the Cowboys. At least that's my theory, and I'm sticking with it.

Gurode appears in local Wendy's commercials, touting the Valley Ranch Chicken Combo with loquacious linemate Flozell Adams. Not sure of the financial terms of their deal, but you know the big guys get all the Wendy's grub they can eat.

Gurode blamed his series of wild shotgun snaps in the first half on a slippery ball. Well, a ball is bound to get a little slick when you’ve got french-fry grease all over your fingers.

Gurode declined to confirm or deny that the fry grease caused him to send a couple snaps sailing over Tony Romo's head.

"I just want to say that I do love Wendy’s," Gurode said, smiling like a good pitchman.

Adams didn't seem to be in a joking mood during a brief chat with Cowboys homer Calvin "Lucky" Watkins.

"It's not funny out there," Adams said when asked about the bad snaps. "We don't even know what's happened. You're standing there and you hear a whooh and just a whooh and you turn around and go, 'Oh man.' And you just want to hit somebody."

Thank you, TUNA, thank you for leaving!

Andre looked like my younger sister out there shotgun-snapping the ball... Wassup with 'dat, anyways????

At least Gurode blocks well.

My main gripe is with Roy Williams. Tim, any chance we cut him tomorrow?

"Well, a ball is bound to get a little slick when you’ve got french-fry grease all over your fingers." Cheap shot.... but you aren't expecting to take you seriously as a journalist, right?

Gurode had a horrible game, but he gets the benefit...one bad game all season is fine with me. Everyone will have one.

Gawd...we aren't going to "cut" Roy Williams. And put Davis or Watkins back there? Are you serious? C'mon...he's not the best but he's not going to lose the season for us. Calm down on Roy.

Quincyyyyy:

Roy Williams will never be a great cover safety, but he isn't nearly as bad as what you and others in this group believe.

The Redskins and Giants have above-average quarterbacks who will complete passes.

That is a fact.

Williams strengths are run-support, intimidation and being able to blitz.

It's up to the coaching staff to put Williams in positions to succceed and limit his opportunities to be exploited in coverage.

So you know, the only strong safeties in the NFL that excel in pass coverage are Sean Taylor and Ed Reed.

Posted by herson @ 9:26 PM Sun, Nov 18, 2007

sean taylor is free safety

The problem is the Jets are coming in and they have Leon Washington as there returner and our Special teams stink. Advantage Jets.

Posted by mcindallas @ 9:40 PM Sun, Nov 18, 2007

maybe the over-head snap was added to the playbook. someone should ask so that we know and shouldn't be so upset when we see it used in a game.

Posted by Bob @ 9:47 PM Sun, Nov 18, 2007

Hey Mike G. Are you talking about the 2/8 Jets? Gonna beat the 9/1 'Boys? Yeah, right. ???

Posted by Quincyyyyy @ 9:49 PM Sun, Nov 18, 2007

Avery210 you're an idiot. Did I ever say put Davis in the game. Hamlin played SS in Seattle and he could play that here. And you could put Watkins at FS.

Timothy:
You are an idiot as well. Do you know how dumb it sounds when you say we need to take a Defesive Back out of coverage. You can't always do that! Roy is going to have to cover. And when was the last time Roy ever was able to come free on a blitz. He sucks at blitzing.

Secondly, you have to be able to cover in todays NFL if you are a safety. I don't care if you are the greatests run support Safety in the league, if you can't cover you are no good to us!!! Roy needs to be cut NOW!!!

I was sitting on the 50yl, 27 rows up, and I was definitely bothered by his coverage in spots... but vastly compensates for those deficiencies by all the other attributes mentioned above... he is in there because he is our best option, and it is not unreasonable to try and minimize his coverage exposures... he's a strong safety which is a far cry from requiring the coverage abilities of a corner.

Quncyyyy,

I agree 100% on Roy, but you know what, he is untouchable apparently. Would love to see Hamlin and Watkins starting but its never going to happen.

Somehow he just cant play badly enough to play himself out of the starting lineup.

Posted by quincyyyyy @ 10:04 PM Sun, Nov 18, 2007

dougi3fr3sh:

corners don't cover TE's. And I don't think our run defense will suffer that much by cutting Roy. Hamlin could be equally as good in the run defense.

And is he our best option? Do you actually think he would be better than Hamlin at SS?

Posted by Quincyyyy @ 10:06 PM Sun, Nov 18, 2007

I would like to amend my last post. Corners do sometimes cover TE's, but normally Linebackers and safeties are matched up against them.

Posted by TSmith @ 10:27 PM Sun, Nov 18, 2007

every blog turns into a Whine About Roy blog. Never in my life have I heard the term cover safety until today. The Cowboys allowed 60 something yards rushing today. Roy is up near the line in run support often. Both safeties will play zone the majority of the time. And my guess is that most people on this site have no idea when a coverage is blown who was responsible. Coverage and pressure go hand in hand. I watched a dline get caved in today and I guess we will blame Roy W for that as well.

Roy? Is that You? I am sure Tim McMahon is flattered you read his blog.

Guys,
While I agree Roy seems to get caught looking silly a lot in coverage. TSMITH is right, our D line was blocked most of the game, and on plays where D-ware was close campbell, he stepped up out of the way. The pressure was really not there consistently this game. This D is designed to give up the pass if pressure is not attained. That is why Phillips D is never going to be the number one D in the league, it is designed to make big plays, but your gonna have plays made on you. As long as we don't give up the big play I don't have a problem. The Skins only scored 23, and our O should easily score more than that. I also wonder if we were not stacking more to stop the run, and taking the chance that Campbell could not beat us.

OK, in the spirit of things, I have to link to this Onion story after the playoff bobble. It's hilarious.
