How many Pro Bowlers?

10:29 AM Wed, Nov 14, 2007 |
Todd Archer   E-mail   News tips

Wade Phillips was asked on Monday how many Pro Bowlers he believes he has on this year's team and he responded he hoped there would be a lot.

Well, the fans are certainly speaking their mind. According to the up-to-date vote on the NFL's Web site, 10 Cowboys lead their positions in the fan vote, and Tony Romo is not the leader at quarterback. That's Green Bay's Brett Favre.

Here's a look at the votes:

Wide receiver - Terrell Owens, 255,490
Tight end - Jason Witten, 238,528
Tackle - Flozell Adams, 138,986
Guard - Leonard Davis, 124,316
Center - Andre Gurode, 121,462
Kicker - Nick Folk, 107,372
Outside linebacker - DeMarcus Ware, 151,589
Strong safety - Roy Williams, 108,450
Punter - Mat McBriar, 85,609
Special teams - Keith Davis, 70,490

The Cowboys had 11 players chosen in 1993 and '94, which is their high. You have to figure Romo will be named to the team again, so if this list were to hold true, the Cowboys could tie the team mark.

Anybody else deserve to go?

Bradie James

Posted by SK @ 10:42 AM Wed, Nov 14, 2007

I would say Anthony Henry

Posted by Aaron Yablon @ 10:45 AM Wed, Nov 14, 2007

I think the world of Roy Williams, but if he is in, then certainly another Dallas Cowboys defensive back is as deserving. Terence Newman, despite his lack of interceptions, deserves a pro bowl bid. Ken Hamlin has interceptions, and is at least partly responsible for Williams' success this year.

Bradie James, and Hamlin over Roy

Posted by Dustan @ 10:46 AM Wed, Nov 14, 2007

Bradie James or T-New

Posted by Carl L @ 10:46 AM Wed, Nov 14, 2007

Bradie James, Ken Hamlin instead of Roy, & Newman. I think Newman is more deserving than either James or Hamlin. He has played very well while covering some of the best WR's the game has to offer(Moss, Burress, etc.), all at less than 100%.

Posted by Ryan in DC @ 10:52 AM Wed, Nov 14, 2007

I would go with Bradie James and Ken Hamlin. If Deon Anderson didn't get hurt I think he would deserve to get mentioned as well.

Posted by Brent in Austin @ 10:54 AM Wed, Nov 14, 2007

I would vote for Bradie James, Newman, and Barber. Surprised to see no love for Barber here!

Posted by raff hollister @ 10:59 AM Wed, Nov 14, 2007

There has got to be some kind of conspiracy with this Roy Williams thing.

Maybe his church group each votes 1,000 times.
That he is even on the list is rediculous, much less at the top.

Bradie and Newman are the obvious omissions although you could make a case for Barber and Hamlin.

Posted by Jeff @ 10:59 AM Wed, Nov 14, 2007

Newman and MBIII. These are fairly quiet difference-makers for their team. Roy Williams? You gotta be kidding, right? He makes a difference for his team, thats for sure.

Posted by Jeff @ 11:02 AM Wed, Nov 14, 2007

By the way, I would add Carpenter, but I think Parcells took him home to NJ.

Posted by Scott @ 11:03 AM Wed, Nov 14, 2007

Barber and Newman deserve it. Roy doesn't. Shocked Flozell is up there after Madden giving him grief about his false starts in a few national games. Glad to see him get some props though. I'd also put Bradie James in there.

Posted by Chris J. @ 11:14 AM Wed, Nov 14, 2007

Send all of them. They're better than anyone dreamed in the pre-season.

Posted by Armando @ 11:16 AM Wed, Nov 14, 2007

Barber, Bradie and T-new!!

Posted by NovaNation @ 11:19 AM Wed, Nov 14, 2007

T-NEW! come on he's widely regarded as one of the best yet he never gets his ticket punched to hawai'i.

Posted by Rusty G. @ 11:21 AM Wed, Nov 14, 2007

Much as I like him, Flo's drive killing penalties and mistakes put him out of LT contention in my book. He's played some good games and taken some good pass rushers (read: Trent Cole) out of the game, but he's a mixed bag.

Roy has played better as of late and has been very sure tackling, but he's not good enough for the sole SS slot.

Add Bradie James and Terence Newman. Neither will make it, of course, because they do not generate the statistics that cause unskilled television analysts to take notice and pretend that they understand the game enough to call someone a good player. Except for the journalists that cover the Cowboys explicitly, if you asked 10, say, ESPN on-air guys or analysts who the best CB on the Cowboys is, they would say Anthony Henry. Surely a corner with more interceptions is better! Wow, he's been dominant!

Bunch of nonsense.

Posted by Bill In DC @ 11:24 AM Wed, Nov 14, 2007

T-New of course!

Posted by Jason @ 11:27 AM Wed, Nov 14, 2007

What a joke. Anybody that honestly votes for Roy is rediculous. He is nothing but a liability.

Posted by JohnG @ 11:30 AM Wed, Nov 14, 2007

Newman and MB. No Bradie whatsoever.

Posted by Creth Davis @ 11:30 AM Wed, Nov 14, 2007

TONY "SOME LIKE IT HOT" CURTIS.

also Greg Ellis, Bradie James, Marion Barber III, T-New & Kenny Hamlin.

in all seriousness I can't see how Greg Ellis isn't on the original list and I understand that injury/splitting time will keep Marion & T-New out of the starting Pro Bowl mix but Greg Ellis has played well enough inspite of his missed time due to injury.

Ken Hamlin may be a back-up at the Bowl but I think Bradie James could deserve a starting position when it's all said and done

Posted by Dennis @ 11:36 AM Wed, Nov 14, 2007

NEWMAN NEEDS TO GO! please ppl go vote for TN. Also MARC COLUMBO is deserving. T newman has given up 2 td's in the past 2 1/2 seasons. enough said

Posted by LORD LANDRY @ 11:49 AM Wed, Nov 14, 2007

MBIII

Posted by Ozzie @ 11:55 AM Wed, Nov 14, 2007

Me as the most loyal fan for the last 24 years! And you can add T-New too! Go Cowboys!

Posted by Fire That Guy @ 12:17 PM Wed, Nov 14, 2007

henry is leads the nfc w/ picks and in top 5 on pass defenses. that is all in 6 games.

Posted by jim de guad @ 12:25 PM Wed, Nov 14, 2007

Are you kidding me? Roy Williams!!!!! He is only starting because Jerry spent part of the family jewels on him.

Posted by david @ 12:27 PM Wed, Nov 14, 2007

barber

Posted by Bruce @ 12:27 PM Wed, Nov 14, 2007

I would include the following players on offense (some reserves of course)-Romo, Owens, Witten, Adams, Davis, Gurode. Total 6.

I would include presently on defense-Ware. Total 1. I do not see Williams as deserving. I see other possibilities if they remain healthy the rest of the year and that include Ellis (sack totals could do it), James (doubt it because he doesn't play 4 downs, but really redeeming himself this year) Newman (merits on coverage skills but lack of int's may doom him) and Henry (more interceptions may sneak him in).

On special teams, I would expect McBriar to make it and Folk should at this point, but probably won't for a more well known experienced kicker. I see possibilities for Keith Davis but not definite. Total 1.

So, I see definites of 8 and possibilities of as many as 7 more. My prediction is 10.

Posted by JD @ 12:36 PM Wed, Nov 14, 2007

Bradie James

Posted by The Son of Crazy Ray @ 1:01 PM Wed, Nov 14, 2007

Colombo deserves to go.
In fact, his signing before the year started was probably the most important signing,
thus allowing Davis to move to his natural guard position, solidifying the O-Line

This message is for Raff Hollister, Roy's Church doesnt have to vote 1,000 times each. Just respect the fact that Roy is a good football player and people recognize that except for people like you who obviously dont know anything about footabll.

Posted by raff hollister @ 2:05 PM Wed, Nov 14, 2007

Bossgame,

If my comments about Roy Willie mean I know nothing about football, then about 90% of cowboy fans know nothing about football. In case you havent noticed most fans, and media, feel the same way about Roy as I do.

Bossgame, You are kinda like the guy in the parade who is out of step but instead thinks everyone else is.

Posted by bossgame @ 2:30 PM Wed, Nov 14, 2007

You just proved my point hollister, if most cowboy fans feel the same way then why does have over 100,000 votes from the FANS.

Hollister, if the only reason you can come up with for not liking Roy is because everyone else is saying the same thing, that proves you know nothing about football like I said......you must have been a follower all of your life

Posted by Randy @ 2:52 PM Wed, Nov 14, 2007

Everybody needs to go on nfl.com and vote for your Cowboys! We're Back Baby!

Posted by PaulC @ 3:18 PM Wed, Nov 14, 2007

Roy? Stop it! If he's voted to the Pro Bowl he gets MORE money. And if he gets MORE MONEY, that means fewer dollars Jerry can spend on Roy's FA replacement next year.

Posted by Roy Williams @ 3:31 PM Wed, Nov 14, 2007

I shouldn't go

Posted by raff hollister @ 4:05 PM Wed, Nov 14, 2007

Bossgame,

I know the game inside and out, and the cowboys inside and out, but I don't have to prove anything to the likes of you my man so rave on if you must.

Posted by 666 @ 4:07 PM Wed, Nov 14, 2007

Bossgame, anybody who thinks Roy Williams is a pro-bowl player is too ignorant to be telling someone else they know nothing about football.

Posted by Chris S @ 5:32 PM Wed, Nov 14, 2007

Bradie James, Neuman and MBIII. Could make a case for Anthony Henry as well

Posted by Todd M @ 6:02 PM Wed, Nov 14, 2007

Newman for sure.

And for the Roy haters, consider the NFC alternatives. It's not like he's horrible. Average pass defense and phenomenal run defense make for a solid safety.

It's amazing to me that some people defend their position of "Roy being the worst player ever" by saying "if you don't agree, you don't watch/know football." What a ridiculous statement. What evidence do you have to back up your claims? For example, The Football Outsiders and KC Joyner (The Football Scientist) both run statistical analyses on the NFL passing game. Both came to the following conclusion: Roy's poor play in coverage is WAY overblown. In fact, he finished in the top 3rd (of safeties) in the league in both analyses. His poor coverage ability is a topic that's taken on a life of its own. He's not Champ Bailey in coverage, but he's not Adam Archuletta or Joe Blow either.

Posted by roy fan @ 6:17 PM Wed, Nov 14, 2007

where on the site can you view the votes?

Posted by DougO @ 7:22 PM Wed, Nov 14, 2007

T-New is a major difference maker. I would give him the nod over most of those other Cowboys on the list. Brady James could be a sleeper as a reserve and even Ellis could surprise if he continues to get big sacks. He's been close enough times in the past to get a few reputation votes.

Romo is a can't miss, even if it's as second string.

Posted by ken @ 9:48 PM Wed, Nov 14, 2007

romo shold start. bradie james should make the game

Posted by segaro @ 12:57 AM Thu, Nov 15, 2007

Roy is good to go!!!!! If not Roy, then who? Yeah, premier tight ends, who beat good cornerbacks, beat Roy sometimes. But I thought his overall game against the Gmen was fantastic. Some of you keep taking him for granted. He is a SS. He does that as good as anyone in the NFC.

Posted by bossgame @ 8:32 AM Thu, Nov 15, 2007

666 and hollister perfect names for the both of you.............people who know about football dont have to say they know about football......they show what they know. Obviously, neither of you do

Posted by tommex @ 12:28 PM Thu, Nov 15, 2007

Bossgame - Have followed the Cowboys for 40+ yrs.
Am happy to join 666, hollister, Jim de Guad, etc
as regards Roy Willie...grant you your opinions
but you're in the decided minority. Roy Willie
is more a creation of ESPN, who highlite the big
hits, not the coverage flaws. Who knows ? Maybe
his church has 2000 members, hahaha
