Losing Deon Anderson could mean a couple things for the Cowboys. If Oliver Hoyte can't return Sunday, it'll mean going into the Giants game without a fullback. And in today's NFL, that idea just isn't all that rare. The traditional fullback position has been dying a slow death over the last few years -- something Jim Trotter covered in Sports Illustrated a couple weeks back -- with replacements coming in hybrid H-back types, and three-plus-receiver and two-tight end sets. Even with Anderson and Hoyte before his C-5 neck sprain, the Cowboys haven't exactly been bucking that trend. I haven't gotten a thorough review of the Eagle tape yet, but came up with some numbers from the previous two games here: OFFENSE VS. PATRIOTS OFFENSE VS. VIKINGS What this says is that Anderson wasn't playing a ton of offensive snaps, and it also indicates that Anthony Fasano will play a big role in replacing his production. When the Cowboys have both Fasano and Witten in the game, Fasano usually lines up in-line, with Witten as an H-back. In those looks, the team will have Witten motion in and line up as a fullback at times. Where this probably hurts most is on the goal-line, in the team's "jumbo" formations. If Hoyte's not healthy, the team simply won't have enough semi-skill (TE/FB) players to fill things out, seeing that Tony Curtis, Fasano and Witten all play close to the line in those looks. But in the grand scheme of things, losing Anderson the Fullback is workable. And as I indicated earlier, losing Anderson the Special Teamer will be tougher to deal with. |

Hoyt was a converted LB, so it's not impossible that someone with potential could do a little crossover duty for goalline situtaions.
Posted by TSmith @ 9:40 PM Mon, Nov 05, 2007
you could almost invision a leather helmet on wittens head during that awesome run. But on point Witten and Fasano present problems in goal line if one is lined up at H-Back. I Witten leaves in motion he is taking a mismatch with him. Taking one guy out of the box and most likely it is someone not equipped to cover him.

Albert, I'm not worried about the goaline offense. Just plug in Marcus Spears to go hit someone. He's not totally foreign to the offensive side of the ball having played TE at LSU. And how hard can it be? He comes in and Romo calls the play and then tells Spears to run into the weakside/strongside A gap.

when do we start talking about the giants
Posted by Saint Jimmy @ 10:05 PM Mon, Nov 05, 2007
Why has there been no update on the Philly cheapshots? From what I've heard Roger Goodell punk'd out again. That dirty piece of **** who speared JJ late only got a 21k (or one gamecheck) fine with no suspension. And I haven't heard anything on the guy who had the helmet-to-helmet hit on Witten. Roger better stay out of Dallas just like JFK should have. When Darren Woodson gets a SEVENTY-FIVE THOUSAND fine for hitting a "defenseless" receiver then WTF is this 21k fine for spearing AND hitting late? To go along with his hypocricy between Dallas and New England coaches I know I wouldn't allow him to even have a layover at Love Field.
Posted by Tim McGrath @ 10:09 PM Mon, Nov 05, 2007
I want to know why there wasn't a flag on the helmit to helmit hit on whitten. The jones hit should have resulted in an ejection.
Posted by Saint Jimmy @ 10:16 PM Mon, Nov 05, 2007
Tim, according to Mickey Spagnola who apparently got an answer from one of the officials on that exact question. Their ruling was that Witten's feet were on the ground so he wasn't "defenseless". Whatever...just shows how stupid that rule is and has helped in the wussifying of the NFL. That dude still lead with his head and nailed Witten in his earhole. Now, that's a rule I can understand.
Posted by Tim McGrath @ 10:20 PM Mon, Nov 05, 2007
Ok but ripping his helmit off like that should be a penalty. I like good hits but clean ones no reason to go out of your way to hurt someone. To me that says more for your lack of talent when you play dirty like that.
Posted by Saint Jimmy @ 11:07 PM Mon, Nov 05, 2007
After replay I would have agreed with you that ripping Witten's hat off should have been a penalty as well. But when I first saw it I, and the refs, thought it was the hit that blew off his helmet. They explained that when they picked up the flag. But slow it down and it's easy to see that it was ripped off. I suppose that should also be a fine as well.
But the thing about Goodell that pisses me off about the JJ hit is...substitute JJ with Tom Brady and that guy would have been suspended for the rest of the year!!! Makes me sick just thinking about this double standard Goodell creates. A double-dirty hit like that should be a 1 game suspension no matter who got hit. Hell, I could even make a case that there was a 3rd personal foul on that 1 hit since he jumped onto a pile and there is no "dog-pilling" in the NFL.
Posted by Stevo @ 11:09 PM Mon, Nov 05, 2007
was it any surprise those nasty plays came against the beagles. That JJ hit was particularly nasty and thank the lord that idiot didn't cause a concussion or break JJ's neck. My only question... why doesn't this happen to Tom Brady?
Posted by camrin @ 11:17 PM Mon, Nov 05, 2007
New England boy: if you want to do some good with your columns, raise a stink up to Goodell's level about that cheapshot hit on JJ. His lack of balls on levying a prudent penalty is puzzling. However, that hit sums up everything you ever needed to know about the "iggles": classLESS.
Posted by Chris/Denton @ 11:21 PM Mon, Nov 05, 2007
Maybe Bobby Carpenter could be converted to FB granted he could get that mop out of his eyes long enough to see who he's supposed to block. 1st round pick FB or 1st round pick special teams guy? Hmmmm...
On a side note, anyone else watching ESPN tonight think that Kornhole and Steve Young would make a nice couple?
Posted by camrin @ 11:31 PM Mon, Nov 05, 2007
They DO make a nice couple. Re-dick-ified.
Posted by Saint Jimmy @ 11:33 PM Mon, Nov 05, 2007
Chris, they would make a nice couple. But I don't think Tony would go for that. He's holding out for Tom Brady. I've never seen such public slurping for millions of people to see since Paris Hilton.
Albert, I just wanted to know how many Eagles fans ripped you for wearing a pink tie to a football game?
Posted by Not So Crazy Ray @ 11:43 PM Mon, Nov 05, 2007
Albert, I agree with your take on losing Deon Anderson. We really drafted him for his special teams prowess as much as anything, and that is where we'll miss him the most. That he was blossoming as a FB could almost be seen as a bonus. As a fan, it just hurts to lose a guy who was starting to come on as he was. He can be replaced, but we all knew his story and pulled for him. Can't wait to see him back next year.
And, I agree with all about that ridiculous cheap shot on JJ last night. Watching live, it looked bad. But watching the replay, I was outraged at how egregious it was. Good thing JJ was OK, and that we beat those cheap shot artists down.

Time for Marcus Spears at FB for a couple of plays... other than that... to heck with it... Spread this team out... Quick Hits to Stanback.. Slants to Owens.. Out Routes to Crayton.. and of course.. Witten up the middle seam.. and just give it to Barber and run it to Strahans side.. time to punish that fool..

OK, getting back to the point of this particular blog entry - is Lousaka Polite available or did someone pick him up?
Posted by scyrlock @ 5:39 AM Tue, Nov 06, 2007
Polite might've been an option except for the fact that Anderson's roster spot, once he went on IR, was taken by Tank Johnson. It will be interesting to see how Garrett will compensate for no FB. Nothing is gonna stop the Redball Express!

I noticed that Calvin Watkins thinks the Giants will win, and he has a lot of points to make his statement look good. Calvin, I got some bad news for you. The line is 1.5 pts for the Cowboys on an away game. That is the same as 4.5 pts if it was a home game. Oh by the way Calvin, in case you forgot, the Cowboys beat the Giants in the last game.
Posted by phil in SC @ 8:52 AM Tue, Nov 06, 2007
How great it was to give those Beagles a sound beating. Bring on the G-Men,\! How great would it be if we just punished them in their own backyard. I had a dream last night that Roy Williams caught Tom Brady in the open field in the Superbowl and decapitated him. It was AWESOME!!!
Posted by Tikkanen @ 9:14 AM Tue, Nov 06, 2007
Polite is on the Chicago Bears active roster (non-PS).
Posted by Bill In DC @ 9:41 AM Tue, Nov 06, 2007
The issue I have with Calvin's assessment that the Giants will win because of their pass rush are:
1) The 'Boys O-line has played much better in pass protect - witness them shutting out the Eagles pass rush (no sacks) which was one of the top 'sacking' D lines in the NFL (24 sacks ytd).
2) The Giants got their pressure and sacks against the Redskins with a devastated O line, the Eagles with a devastated O line, and 3 of the worst teams in the league.
3) Romo and the 'Boys receivers, especially TO, have learned how to beat the blitz. The Eagles threw some pretty exotic blitzes and Dallas burned them consistently.
The Giants only hope is to get consistent pressure with just their front 4, something I don't think they can do. This is why I'm looking for a Dallas win and a win that may be easier than people expect.

Does anyone realize that if Eli has a bad game on Sunday we will probably blow them out. All we have to do is force him into an early mistake and he won't be able to recover. Things tend to snowball on him when he starts off badly. My prediction; BOYS 27 G-MEN 17
Posted by Chris/Denton @ 10:07 AM Tue, Nov 06, 2007
Good points Bill not to mention the Cowboys will have a starting lineup in the secondary for really the first time all season. Newman will be on that left side on Plexico Burress instead of Reeves. Add to the fact that Ellis will be playing this game which helps out the pass rush and against the run and some guy called TANK will be in there rotating at NT.
A QB with a new contract and playing with confidence, and O-line that is starting to gel even though they still manhandled the Giants def. line the last game. A defense that is finding it's swagger and is just getting better each week.
Blow out? Yeah, I have to agree with Phil it's VERY possible.
Posted by raff hollister @ 10:17 AM Tue, Nov 06, 2007
Phil,
you are correct sir. That is the key to this game. We all know that little Eli can really be flustered and get down in the mouth if he gets real and constant pressure.
The boys do that, and he will make mistakes.
Pressure on little Eli is the key to this game
and I do believe the coaches and players recognize that.

Number 1 cowboy fan here down in Houston. Taking a work break from my janitorail service. I love Romo and am becoming obsessed with him. Hope I dont turn gay. Have to change my name from Bill to billi if I do I guess. Not much chance against the Giants this week but thats ok it would just be a small blip for the bestest team other than the Pat, Colts, Packers or Giants in the league.

COWBOY...nice to have you as a fan in Houston Bro. But please. Get with the program. Have you been watching the games or reading the posts above? At this point you could make a claim that we are not better than the Pats or maybe the Colts. But Packers and Giants? Everything that's been mentioned: O-line, healthy DBs, Tank, Ellis, and our ability to put pressure on Eli early, should spell a sound victory. Always tough in the Meadowlands, but should be no doubt. If Eli has a great game, it could be close.
The Eagles game on Monday tells me that the Boys have made a quantum leap in preparation, execution, and resolve. If we work out the situation at FB with Hoyte, Fasano as HB, or whatever, there will be no weaknesses.
Look out G-MEN for the TANK and the Cowboy Brigade!
Posted by Bill In DC @ 11:48 AM Tue, Nov 06, 2007
Here's a 'stat' yo may want to consider when assigning excellence to the Giants front four pass rush.
Osi Umenyiora has 8 sacks on the season, which makes him one of the top pass rushers in the league --- SIX of those sacks came in one game (Eagles) when the Eagles starter (Runyan) went out and a clearly unprepared rookie (Justice) replaced him. In the other SEVEN games he has 2 sacks.
Strahan has 4 sacks. These are the starters. Tuck has 7 but is not a starter.
Looks to me like they aren't applying as much pressure as the stats would have you believe.
Posted by Charles - ATL @ 11:54 AM Tue, Nov 06, 2007
Jrs2300...agreed. Time to get more out of that 1st rounder Spears. Bring in our own "Pats" like jumbo package at times and use him up. He's got skills back there as you mentioned...and did some the 1st year if I recall.
Posted by Saint Jimmy @ 11:59 AM Tue, Nov 06, 2007
Bill In DC, don't forget the most important thing of all about the Giants. It's now officially the 2nd half of the year so we can expect their, and especially Eli's collapse to happen at any moment now. As bad as the Cowboys have been in the 2nd halves of the season the past several years the Giants have been even worse.
Posted by SK @ 12:40 PM Tue, Nov 06, 2007
I love all these posts here and every one of them has good points.
One thing I want to say is, Cowboys can win even with a bad start and score ton of points in the second half. You can't say the same with Giants. Iggles have better secondary than Giants and if we could burn iggles, why not we rout Giants???
I have never seen a stupid chat like the one yesterday with Calvin. Is he really a sportswriter ?
Posted by gpaq @ 12:48 PM Tue, Nov 06, 2007
Jimmy,
another thing about Eli. If you subtract the great game he had week #1 against the 'boys his numbers are mediocre. 9 TD 8 INT 56% completion. At times, Eli can be great but normally he's just average. I don't worry about Eli. If romo is protected decently, i'm very confident.

gpaq I agree with you except the part about Manning being great sometimes. Manning only looks good when Burress is there to bring down his eyes-closed hail mary balls.
The Giants can't beat us at full strength. This is a fact. Manning will be a loser in LT's stadium again.
