Putting Romo's TD total in perspective

3:55 AM Mon, Nov 12, 2007 |
Tim MacMahon   E-mail   News tips

Tony Romo has 23 touchdown passes this season after throwing four yesterday, matching his total in the season opener against the Giants.

Tom Brady has 33 TD passes, so Romo's total isn't exactly generating wows from coast to coast. But 23 is still a ridiculous number through nine games. To put it in perspective, Troy Aikman threw a career-high 23 TD passes in 1992, when he won his first Super Bowl.

Look, Romo is better than Aikman!

I said it.

How do I know? Because basically Romo is playing better than Aikman (better stats) despite a lesser surrounding cast.

Compare the cast around each QB:

O-Line: Aikman had a much better one, yet posted worse numbers.

WR Corps / TE: Both Troy and Tony are equally advantaged by their receivers, yet Romo's numbers are still better.

RBs: Aikman had a better one in Emmitt, yet Romo's numbers are still better.

O-Coordinator: Slight advantage Aikman. Turner is a legend, but Garrett is a wunderkind himself. Still, Romo puts up better numbers.

Dave, I'd love nothing more to say that Romo is better than Aikman. But using your logic Danny White is better than Aikman because Aikman never put up better stats. I think you seem to be forgetting that Aikman was on a running team. Tony is either passing more than the Cowboys run it or it's about even (ex. 28 pass attempts vs. 23 rushing attempts against the Giants). More often than not the Aikman Cowboys were running the ball more than they threw it. But if Romo wins a Superbowl or two then he could go down as the Greatest Cowboys QB which is a big statement.

Aikman could have had a lot more TD passes, but E. Smith kept running them in.

I had a similar argument with my son about Aikman - I believe Aikman would have be regarded as one of the greatest all-time had he played in a different offense, one geared to more passing.

Say what you want but Aikman had the all time leading rusher lining up behind him.Emmitt was a weapon and they used him to control the games. If anyone also has forgot he also had a hall of fame wide receiver lining up outside. At the end of their run, they had 3 rings. When this cast can duplicate that then we can compare them, but no way right now

A QB is supposed to be the field general and lead his team to a win by any way possible. It is their job to not lose the game and stay within the framework. Last time I looked, Aikman has three rings (would have been four if Deion had been called for pass interference on that play in 94). While Romo has looked great, and I believe he is going to be... lets not crown him better than Aikman until he has at least won the hardware once. Aikman has done what only Brady, Montana, and Bradshaw have accomplished.

Hey, I think Romo will become Mr. Big in the NFL, BUT,

It is way too early to say he is in the same league with Troy Aikman.

Three Super Bowl Rings commands more respect than that folks.

We need to tone it down a little on Tony and the team as a whole. They aint won a thing yet, not even the NFC East. Don't let expectations get ahead of realistic possibilities.

In a couple years let's compare the two. Aikmen had this helper named Smith (22) as I recall and didn't need to past all the time

How many times (I love Irvin, still wear his jersey on gameday) did Irvin get tackled within the 5 yard line in his career? I don't know, but I guarantee you it is one if not the highest for a WR of his stature.

Love the Boys and would LOVE to meet the Yanks for a third game in the playoffs!

I just wish the running backs and running game would step it up a bit. For sure that would be icing on the cake with a well more rounded offense. I love the way Romo is playing but I don't ALWAYS want to have to RELY on the passing game, no matter how good it's going. A strong running game just makes the passing game more efficient when it's wanted but NOT expected or needed.

Romo ain't been but thru 15 games total since last season and they are all ready saying he's better than Troy Aikman. . .monkey dodo. He ain't won no super-bowls yet alone the NFC East 1st. Let's see how he holds up through the rest of this season. . . .

You can't compare Romo and Aikman like that. Aikman was never really a "passer" ... he was a manager. Whereas it seems Romo just plays, and things seem to come together, every movement Aikman did was deliberate and pre-planned. Two different, but equally effective, styles.

And yes, Aikman ran a run-first offense. That tends to happen when you have the best RB of all time lining up behind you.

Besides ... it's just a different time in the NFL. Everyone is pass-first. Defense, while still obviously uber-important, is no longer what it was; there are no more "dominant" defenses.

So hey, I love Romo, but I love Troy too. Let's leave it at that.

Andrew, great points and you speak alot of sense. You're right on the money when you say that EVERY movement of Aikman was planned. The dude was perfection if you ask me.

I absolutely love Romo but it is also true that Aikman won 3 Super Bowls. Romo isn't in Aikman's league, yet. I whole-heartedly believe Romo will bring us at least 2 rings. And 2 rings will put him in Roger and Troy's league.(and while we're at it, let's not forget Dandy)

Go Cowboys!

Aikman stood on a dime and shredded defenses in a timing based offense. He could make every throw and was very mobile when needed. He was surrounded by talent. Romo can do all of those same things and is the next King of Improvise and Overcome. He too is surrounded by talent. The rest of the season will be a rocking good time.
