Romo plays down Favre Idol angle

Tony Romo disappointed the media mob at Valley Ranch by insisting that the storyline about him idolizing Brett Favre is overblown.

"Honestly, I was more of a basketball fan," said Romo, who strongly denied an accusation that he used to wear a cheesehead. "Michael Jordan was the guy I had all over my wall and stuff."

Romo readily admitted that he enjoyed watching Favre play while growing up in Burlington, Wisc. But he said his favorite quarterback as a kid was actually John Elway. He said he was an outcast among his friends when the Broncos and Packers met in Super Bowl XXXII.

Romo said he's always rooted for legends late in their careers. Of course, that description fits Favre these days.

"If I was a normal guy," Romo said, "I wouldn't be rooting us on."

You do not throw they way Romo throws, run the way Romo runs, and improvise the way Romo improvises if you haven't studied Favre in some fashion....I'm not buying it! :)

it's more likely he studied everything these guys did wrong:

quincy carter
chad hutchinson
ryan leaf
drew henson
drew bledsoe

Yah, I'm not so sure I'm buying this either. Elway?? First time I heard that, not that Elway is bad, just never heard TR talk about him before.

Like UDX mentioned, there is no getting away from the similarities between TR and Favre. Of course being able to watch all the horrible QB's we auditioned had to be a good thing for Romo. Before you can lead, you must learn to follow and those guys showed him what not to do. Follow the good, ditch the losers.

TR is a very smart guy. He even said he studied what all the other quarterbacks did wrong and good. What he has that BF has is the ability to think on your feet. He knows what is going on all around him. Those are things that can't be taught. When you find a QB with those qua;ities then you develop them more. Most of all he loves what he is doing and that makes a big difference. Any sport is 90% mental. Eli will never be good because he is a mental midgit.

Romo would have an EXCEPTIONAL platoon and company commander.

He thinks outside the box, and his brain is always moving, always firing, always working the problem.

I've always said the most important weapon a quarterback has is his brain. Look at the great ones, Staubach and Aikman, Montana and Young, Simms and Elway. They're all smart players.

Belicheat himself said that he looks for "smart tough guys." In that order, smart then tough.

The problem with some of the never-will-bes in this league, such as E-wee, McNabb, is that they simply don't have the smarts for the job. Sure they have the smarts to get a team to a playoff.

BUT for greatness, for dynasties, for trophies, count them out.

Peyton works the problem, almost in some manic fashion on the sideline.

E-wee is so bad that his team had to bring in the shrinks to try to get him not to look like such a clueless loser on the field, in the huddle and on the sideline.

I can't recall a team that brought in the shrinks for their supposed franchise player, just to try to get him not to look like a loser.

That tells a tale.

E-wee might not be long with the Giants. Coughlin will be gone at the end of this year, and the new coach might not have the patience for the project of all projects, E-wee.

Thinking on your feet is one thing. Being able to get out of trouble is one thing.

Let's not kid ourselves here. Romo is a really good passer. You can have all the improvisational skills in the world but if you aren't a good passer it doesn't matter.

Call it "elusiveness in the pocket", "creativity", or "quickness" or whatever but it's the passing that's getting it done combined with the joys of picking up the blitz.

We all knew Romo was a riverboat gambler and moved around and stuff. What we didn't know is the kinds of passes he can make. I had no idea.
