Superman Sam's gonna get the Galloping Gobbler

4:41 PM Wed, Nov 21, 2007 |
Tim MacMahon   E-mail   News tips

LOUIS DeLUCA / DMN

You heard it here first, folks: Sam Hurd will have a huge game against the Jets.

Think about it: No. 17, pressed into starting duty for the Cowboys on Thanksgiving. Sound familiar?

And Jason Garrett's calling the plays! You kiddin' me?! Can fate be any clearer?

I'm fairly certain the Jets' game plan will focus on containing T.O. and Jason Witten, considering those two dudes are among the league's elite at their position. Hurd will be an afterthought to the coach formerly known as Mangenius, who will be sorry for sleeping on T.O.'s Soulja Boy celebration partner.

I'll be conservative and predict that Hurd will match his season totals with 169 receiving yards and a touchdown to earn the Galloping Gobbler, which is widely considered the ugliest trophy in all of sports.

Revised prediciton: Cowboys 35, Jets 17!!!

Tim, that'd be all good but there's zero chance that Sam Hurd can get the Galloping Gobbler. Dallas doesn't have the FOX game so he would win whatever stupid award Phil Simms gives out for Thanksgiving.

Posted by Tim MacMahon @ 4:57 PM Wed, Nov 21, 2007

Saint Jimmy, please don't let minor facts get in the way of my predictions.

Posted by David V @ 4:59 PM Wed, Nov 21, 2007

Yo T!- get a pic of the new version of the Gobbler. There is a new version. ... 2.0.

Posted by Saint Jimmy @ 5:09 PM Wed, Nov 21, 2007

Don't get me wrong. It's a great prediction. Hurd is my favorite to be the star of the game. Unless for some reason the Jets forget what number TO wears just like the Redskins did. My sentimental favorite would be Julius Jones cause I'd like to see him out perform his brother. But of course you could say that Romo is the player of the game almost every week so it's hard to pick against him.

I do wish this game was on FOX though. Seems like everytime Phil Simms comes into town it's almost a gauranteed loss for the Cowboys. I'm more scared of the Phil Simms curse than I am of the Stars & Stripes (Blue Unis) curse.

BTW, what jersies are the Cowboys wearing for the game? Is it the usual throwback jersies that they normally wear? Or is it going to be a different one?

I think this might be the game Dallas changes the running back rotation again to the last year format. In the past several games, with increased carries, Barber's production did not increase and in fact, he is no longer as effective in the 4th quarter because he carried the ball earlier in the game. Even Dallas Cowboys organization is talking about that. This is the perfect game to get running game going by running Jones more. Jones is competing against his brother. Crayton is hurt. Jets do not have an exposive offense to score a lot of points. Maybe Dallas should slow down the game a little bit by running the ball more. With Owens and Witten, Jets cannot out 8 or 9 men in the box. Dallas should have some running room.

Posted by Greybeard @ 5:43 PM Wed, Nov 21, 2007

Doesn't Simms give out that bronze iron? The Phil Simms Iron Man Award, or something like that? Dunno.

Posted by Maverick @ 5:58 PM Wed, Nov 21, 2007

You are just now figuring this out especially after I have informed you within the last two days that Hurd is being mentored by TO??? Wow, nice to know your real ethical on giving people proper credit. You're really bending over backwards not give me the credit especially with the other predictions I have made over the past few games. Sad you had to steal the info and ideas from a fan.

Posted by Bill in DC @ 6:22 PM Wed, Nov 21, 2007

Maverick,

Jeez, whine much?

Posted by Mike G @ 6:25 PM Wed, Nov 21, 2007

The Cowboys are wearing there white home jerseys. They are wearing there throwbacks next week against the Packers.

Posted by DCFanatic @ 6:30 PM Wed, Nov 21, 2007

Fox doesn't have the game and there is also a new version of the Galloping Gobbler.

Come on Timmy, scrap this post and put up something about the CBS award, The All Iron Trophy, which Ron Dayne won against us two seasons ago.

Posted by Brian M., Atlanta @ 7:17 PM Wed, Nov 21, 2007

Yawl quit knocking TMac about his gobbler prediction. Whatever the award is I like the prediction. Mangenius will do his best to take away T.O. and Witten, which should leave things wide open for Hurd and the running game to boot.

We sure 'bout the throwbacks not being in tomorrow's contest? I mean it'd make sense I suppose to wait for the NFL Network game vs. the Packers, but it also seems more 'normal' for them to wear them tomorrow. Personally I hope to see them tomorrow as I'd like the 'Boys to be as comfortable as possible in their nice, tidy whites when the Packers come to town.

One thing to add onto TMac's post...given Crayton's contract status at season's end, does anyone else see the possibility for Hurd to take tremendous advantage of this opportunity and show HE can be the third WR next season and beyond? The guy, I've always felt, has tremendous talent, has the size you love in a WR, the attitude required, and no doubt the desire to succeed.

Posted by TSmith @ 7:19 PM Wed, Nov 21, 2007

Maverick get a journalism degree and a gig with the News and take credit for any silly thing you want. TMac I think you stole my idea to somewhat defend Roy Williams. And its also my idea to pickup Hurd to spot play this week in Fantasy League. If he gets me beat I will blame you for the shoddy prediction.

Posted by herson @ 7:40 PM Wed, Nov 21, 2007

honestly we should keep crayton. Who knows how terry's return will be if he will have that deep threat speed. T.O ,crayton, hurd, stanback and witten is all we need.

Posted by Jeremy @ 7:42 PM Wed, Nov 21, 2007

I don't know about Hurd. I want to see more of him because whenever they throw to him, he seems to make plays. But, does he not get as much time because Crayton is that much better than him? Or, is he just needing an opportunity? I guess we will find out.

And, does anyone else hate listening to Troy Aikman? He hates the Cowboys. I'm watching the replay on NFL Network right now, and its been Washington this and Washington that. What gives? I was at the game, so I didn't hear him live, but crap man, he needs to try to be balanced. John Madden was always able to be balanced when doing Raider games.

Posted by Maverick Hater @ 7:45 PM Wed, Nov 21, 2007

Maverick do you ever have anything nice to say about all the work the bloggers do, and all the info and entertainment they provide us?

C'mon get out of mommy and daddy's basement you 33 year old bald headed scab (ok stole it from Eminem)get some sun on those knobbly white knees, put the mountain dew and day old pizza away and join the human race.

On second thought..........................

Posted by Jeremy @ 8:40 PM Wed, Nov 21, 2007

Well, if Hurd gets it, then the Cowboys win. I would be happy with that. I'm really worried about Leon Washington and the Jets return game. I think the Cowboys coverage unit is so bad. At some point, they may want to just kick it out of bounds and give it to them at the 40. I know that is crazy sounding, but dang, teams are "that" close on every return on breaking it. I'm taking Dallas, though in a close game, at 30-20.

Posted by ER Nurse @ 9:41 PM Wed, Nov 21, 2007

Anybody think the predicted 10-20mph winds will hurt the passing game???
Hope it won't hurt TR to TO (or SH as Tim predicts) It may become a battle of the Jones Brothers (and the Barbarian)

Posted by TSmith @ 9:44 PM Wed, Nov 21, 2007

I think Romo will spread the wealth in this game. I could see at least 2 with 100 yards. I think Witten will have a big game. I will predict Witten gets that galloping Iron Turkey Leg award. The Cowboys win a Turkeyday stinker 41-9.

Posted by TSmith @ 9:49 PM Wed, Nov 21, 2007

I don't recall ever really feeling much of a breeze through the hole in the top of the barn. Ive been in there when it was 800 degrees wishing for a breeze.

Posted by Keith @ 10:13 PM Wed, Nov 21, 2007

I'm gonna go on the flip side and bet a Dallas defender gets the Gobbler...either Newman, Henry, or Ware...I'll take Ware since I think he'll be wearing a Jet QB uni all game long.

Posted by david C @ 10:13 PM Wed, Nov 21, 2007

i picked up hurd to sub for crayton on my fantasy team and im expecting a solid game but who knows with romo, the ball can go anywhere... but i have him too so its all good. i love being a cowboy fan. everyone else flies to there family, im flying from new york to watch the cowboys beat the jets (the team im expected to admire cus im from ny) but im really excited to finally watch my boys play another team besides philly or the giants... so excited

Posted by Tim MacMahon @ 10:14 PM Wed, Nov 21, 2007

Saint Jimmy -- Mike G got it. Regular whites vs. Jets. Throwbacks vs. Packers.

Maverick -- Don't know what I'd do without being able to steal all your genius insight.

All -- Very disappointed to hear that the game won't be on FOX. I was really looking forward to more discussion about Troy Aikman being the NFL's version of Benedict Arnold.

Posted by Maverick @ 10:16 PM Wed, Nov 21, 2007

Tsmith..being a bit hypocritical criticizing me for what you were indicating in the next two sentences? If you're going to be criticize, rule #1... don't be a hypocrite. BTW, don't need a degree in journalism. It didn't help these bozos, why would it help me? Thanks for the fast ball, though.

Bill in DC, not in a very deep voice, no. But, looks like you're getting what you deserve..living next to bureaucrats, politicians, and worse..the redskins. Tell your boy, lil danny snyder I said hello.

As for your MH...well, if you only knew how far you are from the truth, you'd be a bit shocked. And, of course, the answer to your question: not a "no", but hell no!

Ok, kids that's enough comedy for tonight. Love and kisses to Timmy, Frump Boy, Frenchie, and the NE Cheat. Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Posted by Brett @ 10:52 PM Wed, Nov 21, 2007

Cowboys will finally take the early lead in this one but the Jets will hang around. Boys 31, Jets 17.

Posted by Bill in DC @ 11:28 PM Wed, Nov 21, 2007

Maverick. And you enjoy whatever alternate universe you seem to be occupying atm. Happy Thanksgiving.

Posted by TSmith @ 11:49 PM Wed, Nov 21, 2007

Maverick, I was using sarcasm to make a point. Its not hard for a person talking about a particular subject to come to the same conclusions. TMac doesn't have to steal another persons thought or idea because sometimes we as Cowboy fans and writers see the same thing. Maverick lighten up and have a nice Thanksgiving and I will make an effort to not criticize silly comments unless they are unfairly critical of the hard working authors of these blogs that provide us seemingly limitless entertainment.
