Tank feeling more comfortable

10:34 PM Sun, Nov 18, 2007 |
Albert Breer   E-mail   News tips

Though Tank Johnson has continued to have his problems against the run, the Cowboys coaches are showing plenty of faith in him when it's time for the quarterback to sling it. Tank was spotted on the field, in meaningful plays, late during Sunday's win. And that does mean something to the roster's newest addition.

"We just needed some pressure, and we have a great rotation," Johnson said, to explain his presence. "It doesn’t really matter who’s in there. Guys are just getting the job done as far as getting up the field and being disruptive."

Johnson said for now, he's still learning the system and leaning on starting NT Jay Ratliff -- who he's "learned a lot from" -- to become more effective within the scheme.

But perhaps the most important thing, Johnson says, was getting game action under his belt. It wasn't all new today for Tank, and that made a difference.

"Just getting that first game out of the way was crucial," Tank said. "Once I got that out of the way, there weren’t many nerves there. It was just playing football. I just gotta continue to play myself into shape and I’ll be OK."

I LOVE TANK, HOWEVER ALBERT LETS GET TO THE POINT, CAN SOMEONE ASK WADE IN HIS NEXT PRESS CONFERENCE HOW LONG CAN THE DALLAS COWBOYS DEFENSE CONTINUE TO PUT UP WITH THE LACK OF DEFENSIVE COVERAGE THAT ROY WILLIAMS IS PROVIDING TO THE COWBOYS DEFENSIVE SECONDARY? I am Sick And Tired Of Watching Roy Williams hurt the Dallas Cowboys Defense. He is Truly a "LIABILITY" in Defensive Coverage and I can't "Possibly" see how the Dallas Cowboys can compete for a "Super Bowl" This year with him in the Defensive Secondary.

I have often wondered if they could just move him to a line backer maybe he wouldn't stick out like a "Sore Thumb" as much, however in thinking about it further I have come to the rationalization that how can the Dallas Cowboys Coaching Staff move him to a line backer when line backers cover tight ends and "HE CAN'T DO THAT NOW"

MEMO TO JERRY JONES AND WADE PHILLIPS:

BENCH HIM BEFORE IT"S TO LATE, BECAUSE WE CAN'T AND I REPEAT CAN'T COMPETE FOR A "SUPER BOWL" WITH HIM IN COVERAGE. I CAN'T REMEMBER THE LAST TIME I HAVE EVEN SEEN HIM DEFLECT A PASS.

JERRY & WADE HELP, COWBOY NATION IS COMPLETELY IN PAIN WATCHING HIM GET "TORCHED" WEEK AFTER WEEK!

Roy Williams sucks. I mean, he really sucks.

Posted by Derek @ 11:23 PM Sun, Nov 18, 2007

Ok, so Roy isn't the most well-rounded safety in the league, but he is STILL A PRO-BOWLER. Yeah, he let Shockey catch a few, and he didn't stay with Cooley on that one play (3rd or 4th down) near the Cowboys endzone in the late 4th quarter, but ya'll need to stop with the hatin'...

He still has the 2nd-most tackles on the team, 2 INTs on the year, 3 passes defended, and can punish anyone running across the middle.

Are you people insane? "Bench him"? For who? Pat Watkins? Oh yeah, he was a HOFer at safety last year..

Face it - with Newman & Henry (hopefully) fully healthy, and a very dependable Hamlin at FS, we can afford to have Roy at SS. And pay attention - there are already some formations where they bring in Watkins and move Roy up to LB. But with our strong LB corps, there's no reason to make that permanent. We gonna sit Bradie or Akin that often? Don't think so...

He's gotten burned once or twice, but he's still one of the better defensive players on the team. Didn't he make a few big tackles today? I seem to recall a few...

Compare Dallas to New England,
running game dallas C Pats. B
Q-back dallas A Pats A
recievers Dallas A Pats A
Coaching Dallas B pats A
Defense Dallas c Pats A
Special teams Dallas B Pats B

I think we will meet again, but with our secondary we will have to score 50 to be close.

They tacked 55 on buffalo without trying hard it
was hard to watch, somebodys got to bury Brady.

Posted by Chuck @ 11:33 PM Sun, Nov 18, 2007

The entire secondary looked really shaky today...there's NO way this defense could hang with the Pats again...Santana Moss, with a bad wheel, looked like a HOFer out there, and Cooley looked like the second coming of Shockey. No pass rush, with the exception of Ware. That could have easily been a Skins win...in fact, I was sort of bracing for it...

Posted by Sig @ 11:47 PM Sun, Nov 18, 2007

The criticism on Roy is harsh. I thought the idea of bringing Hamlin in was to get Roy up to the line where he creates havoc. Albert, do a post this week sometime on how many times Roy lined up near the nose of the ball as a blitzer.

Before we single out and bash Roy, think about this...Jason Campbell dropped back 53 times and got sacked once (two if you count the intentional grounding). That's not acceptable. How about getting on our D-line for not putting pressure on him. When is the last time the D-line (not outside LBs) got more than 1 sack in a game? Chris Canty, Marcus Spears, Jay Ratliff, Tank Johnson, ???? Bowen, and Jason Hatcher deserve kudos for run defense...but c'mon 53 passes and you can't get to the QB once? The entire defense really didn't play that well...but it seemed to be bend but don't break. What is the deal with the 10 yard cushions...and why isn't Newman following Santana Moss...who torched the defense and had more catches than TO.

If there is a criticism about Roy, it is that the coaches haven't put him up at the line yet like they said they would. Hang in there Roy...good win...we are 9-1 but can improve.

Putting Roy Williams at Safety is the equivalent of putting Shaq at point guard.

Derek, the "but he can dunk!!!!" argument does not wash. Roy is not a safety. Roy is not Pro Bowl anything. Roy is awful.

Hamlin and Watkins is the only answer right now.

Dallas didn't bring its "A" game and still won a rivalry game against the Redskins. T.O. made plays, Romo put the ball where he could make those plays and Big D is 9-1. I'll take that over what we've had to deal with for close to a decade.

Posted by Derek @ 1:13 AM Mon, Nov 19, 2007

Oh yeah... Tank Johnson is good. Hopefully he'll be great in time for the playoffs.

Posted by Jeff @ 5:03 AM Mon, Nov 19, 2007

You guys need to lighten up on Williams. He is the weak point in the secondary, but he is not out there for "no reason". He is quick and hits hard. Maybe in the future he will be a situational player, but for now he is the best we have and if you want to trade up, start looking to next season's draft. For now, enjoy the ride.

Posted by fromthisdesk @ 7:27 AM Mon, Nov 19, 2007

I agree with the sane people on this site...you can't bench Williams. That's idiocy! Is he a liability? Yes...but do you remember when Watkins was starting and all the deep balls were being completed aginst him? At least Roy keeps it in front of him. Mostly. You guys are probably the same people who were complaing last year that we didn't take merriman over Ware... My concern is with the coaching...every QB with minimal talent is wearing us out! There has to be a way of scheming the "D" to cut down on the passing offense yards...thank God for Newman!!

Posted by L.J., fla. @ 8:44 AM Mon, Nov 19, 2007

Campbell's arm is too good to allow him as much time as the Boys did. Where the hell was the pressure? Wades's defense will not cut it in the playoffs. Improvement (DEFENSE) must be made before playing Detroit and Green Bay, to advoid two probable losses.

Posted by NTouch4u2 @ 8:52 AM Mon, Nov 19, 2007

Derek, its obvious that you are either not reading what I posted clearly, not watching the same football games I have been watching as Roy Williams has been getting "TORCHED" this whole season, or you clearly are in "Denial" that Roy Williams is a complete "Liability" in "Pass Coverage". Whatever the case work it out in therapy, or with someone that loves you. And as far as Roy Williams being a Pro Bowler, So was Lavar Arrington, and we see what that has done for him.

That being said, I have watched Pat Watkins do something that I have not seen Roy Williams do in the past several weeks. Defend and deflect a pass.

Finally you made my point exactly "WHEN THEY MOVE HIM TO LB HE STILL CAN'T COVER THE OPPOSING TEAMS TIGHT END SOMETHING THAT HE AS A SAFETY CAN'T DO". In other words what can Dallas Cowboys do with him that will not place them in a precarious postion?

Posted by Chris J. @ 8:56 AM Mon, Nov 19, 2007

Darren Woodson we miss you! Come back please!

Posted by NTouch4u2 @ 9:12 AM Mon, Nov 19, 2007

Chris J,

I love where your head is at. Now if we can only help other members of Cowboys NATION to weak of and smell the coffee we may be able to get somethings done. What does it say about Roy Williams when Ken Hamlin can come to Dallas and in his first year play better in coverage than our Mr. Pro Bowl "Roy Williams".

ROY WILLIAMS LOOK OUT........YOUR MAN IS STILL RUNNING OPEN BEHIND YOU, IN FRONT OF YOU, BESIDE YOU...ROY JUST COVER HIM PLEASE.....

Posted by 05mustang @ 10:05 AM Mon, Nov 19, 2007

When was the last time you saw Roy hit hard. There are numerous instances where I see him just standing around a pile when he could have put the "finishing" hit on a running back. He really plays like he's protecting himself now. He doesn't have that "Superman" reckless abandon that made him so special.

Watch him, it's almost like you can see him thinking of how to avoid the hit. I guess that's what happens when you're making big money. Not saying I blame him, but it's definetely affected his game.

Posted by shahab @ 10:20 AM Mon, Nov 19, 2007

roy williams greatest asset was his ability to lay some nasty hits on players, which have gotten him to the pro-bowl. he was never been good in coverage but it seems the last couple of years, perhaps due to age, he has become a total liability in pass coverage. to add to his deminishing cover skills, he no longer puts the jolting hits on players he used to. i can not recall a single hit from him this year that i thought was a punishing hit.

i think it is time for him to go. in fact, it's past time. jerry should have gotten rid of him after last season when the liability he poses was clear. let's just hope his poor play doesn't cost us our goal which is a super bowl.

Posted by shahab @ 10:34 AM Mon, Nov 19, 2007

05mustang...you're absolutely right. i've noted that too. he'll often pull up as a guy is going down instead of lowering the shoulder and drilling into him. he no longer cares. somebody needs to open jerry's eyes and realize it's time for this guy to go.

Posted by Richard @ 10:43 AM Mon, Nov 19, 2007

Pat Watkins has been playing safety in the nickel all season. Can you remember him getting burned (other than randy moss barreling into him for that TD)? Watkins and Hamlin would be a far better combo than having Roy out there. He is game planned by every opponent, and they all seem to get him one on one with their tight end. He has given up a touchdown at least two weeks in a row. he is the biggest weakness of this team. Put watkins in and it will at least be improved.

Posted by Delone @ 10:44 AM Mon, Nov 19, 2007

I'm pretty sure Watkins and whoever else some of you guys want to replace roy with isn't tearing it up in practice. If they were I think they'd be out there whether roy had an extension or not. Bench Roy Williams, Bench Julius Jones, Bench Gurode, even last year people wanted T.O. Benched. Some fans expect 53 all-pro players and that's just not going to happen. All the names above are needed and has played a part in being 9-1. Enjoy it and show a little more patience and loyalty. We're winning our bad games and to me that says a lot. If not for Roy tackling Cooley we'd probably be 8-2 with the Giants closing.

Posted by Kay @ 11:39 AM Mon, Nov 19, 2007

Someone pointed out that Watkins got burned all of last season. At least he had an excuse: he was a rookie. Roy's a six year veteran. He is not going to get any better. Watkins is a rangy and speedy player with plenty of ceiling in terms of talent. Besides, how could anyone be any worse in coverage than Williams. It's 11-on-10 when he's on the field.

Posted by Gary @ 12:25 PM Mon, Nov 19, 2007

Maybe Jerry Jones is reading this blog and will make a move based on this incredible knowledge base about Roy Williams. We need Anthony Henry able to run full speed, or one or two decent corners to go with TN.

Posted by Alan in Lubbock @ 12:30 PM Mon, Nov 19, 2007

If Roy Williams was a blanket he couldn't cover a matchbook.

Posted by Mark @ 7:17 PM Mon, Nov 19, 2007

Personally, I'd like to see my man Keith Davis at SS. He hits as hard as Roy and gotta be equal or better in coverage.

Posted by Byron @ 9:52 AM Tue, Nov 20, 2007

Roy has definitely not play his best lately. I'm with experimenting with Keith Davis in Roy's spot. Just try it a couple series. Sent a message to Roy to either watch more film or get some more practice time in man to man coverage. Davis could not be any worst that where we are now.
