Representatives from USA Football are at the Ranch today to present the State of Texas with the Governor's Cup, given to what the organization deems as the best football state in country. Here are five categories in which states were ranked: 1. Number of boys playing high school football 2. Number of boys who sign letters of intent to play Div. I-A football 3. Number of 2007 NFL Draftees born in each state 4. Number of NFL coaches, assistants included, born in each state 5. Nielsen TV ratings of in-market NFL games Pennsylvania was second, and Florida was also in the top five. There to accept for Texas were four Cowboys who played high school and college football in the state: Head coach Wade Phillips (Port Neches-Groves HS/Houston), safety Keith Davis (Italy High/Sam Houston State), guard Leonard Davis (Wortham High/Texas) and linebacker Justin Rogers (Commerce High/SMU). "I think those of us from Texas and in Texas figured this award might be coming this way," Phillips said. "We do think we're the best football state and we appreciate USA Football doing this. So thank you from all of Texas football." |

That ought to show those California, Ohio, & Florida guys who's boss!!
Being a native Texan, I knew this anyway! Texas High School football is the best high school football on the PLANET.

Monte,
I went to the Miami game in Miami and they were talking about the "Football States" on the radio. They said Football is bigger in Texas, but Florida produces better athletes.

Dave,
That would explain why there are roughly 4X more Texans in the Pro Football HOF than Floridians, because the athletes are better. :)

Dave, you've got it twisted. Florida and California MIGHT produce better atheletes (although Lance Armstrong, George Foreman, Michael Johnson and others may disagree) but Texas produces the best football players. Any other state that disagrees is just jealous.

I'll risk the wrath of Timmy and point out yet another of Albert's "typos". Albert seems to have lots of typos. So the USA Football reps " . . . are the ranch . . ."? Something missing, there, Albert? A preposition? Or a proposition?

Don't know who "USA Football" is, but crowning Texas "the best football state in country" is the understatement of the decade especially if you are talking about High School football. Name 1 college team in the top 10 any year that doesn't have at least 3 or 4 starters from Texas. There probably isn't a single pro team without at least 3 or 4 from Texas.
USA Football should save time and money and just pay for a statue the size of the Sam Houston statue (on I-45) to be build in the exact middle of the state and be done with it.

Anyone that didn't know Texas had the best football has been living in the twilight zone. By far the best football.....

Jerry Jones what are you doing saying "our state's exceptional football tradition." You're not a native Texan!!! Sell the Boyzz to a Texan and carry your hillbilly butt back to Arkansas!!!!

"Florida and California MIGHT produce better athletes ... "
The real disparity is between the athletes produced by Florida, California AND Texas, on the one hand, and those produced by the other 47 states combined, on the other. Though the Big 3 have only a bit over 25% of the US population, they probably turn out an absolute majority of top-rank athletes in a number of sports, including football, track and field, tennis, golf etc. All three are enhanced by athletes born elsewhere who move to them for superior programs and year-round training and playing conditions.
Curiously, of the three, only Texas suffers from a massive exodus of its high school football stars to other states (which is why Texas universities do not win national championships as often as Florida and California schools).

"...only Texas suffers from a massive exodus of its high school football stars to other states."
Could that be because Texas has more of those players than anyone else? There're only so many starter slots at Div I Texas schools, you know...
