T.O. takes on history

With his four-touchdown effort today, Cowboys WR Terrell Owens hit up some history. Details:

-- He now has 128 career touchdowns. That moves him past Jim Brown and Walter Payton, the two predecessors to Emmitt Smith as the league's all-time leading rusher, and into sixth on the league's all-time touchdown list.

-- He now has 126 career touchdown catches. That pushes him above Marvin Harrison for third all-time in that statistic. And T.O. is only four catches behind Cris Carter for second on the list. Chances are, though, he'll never get to ex-Niner teammate Jerry Rice's number of 197, a figure that's categorically absurd.

So can we settle this now -- T.O., he's pretty good.

Of course, in this season of the 81s, he'll be compared with Randy Moss. Here's the rundown of the numbers, as they stand:

SUNDAY
Moss: 10 catches, 128 yards, 4 TDs
Owens: 8 catches, 173 yards, 4 TDs

SEASON
Moss: 66 catches, 1052 yards, 16 TDs
Owens: 58 catches, 1028 yards, 12 TDs

So it's close, but also remember that Moss doesn't have Donte' Stallworth on the other side and Wes Welker lining up inside him. Conversely, the Cowboys run the ball better and Jason Witten is better than anything the Pats roll out at tight end.

We'll reduce it to this for all of you -- You got one game to win. Which 81 do you take?
Unbiased opinions are encouraged, but, of course, never required.

And let's finish up with this quote from Moss, asked if Owens' big day in the late afternoon motivated him at night: “I saw the real 81. I think he had like 170 yards and four touchdowns. Yeah, I saw the real 81. But I don’t really get into that. I have a job to do and that’s to go out and block and catch balls. To try to go out there and try to duplicate or do something better than a receiver did on Sunday is not my game and I don’t want to do that.”

It's a no-brainer. T.O. I mean, Moss is really good at what he does but you have to have a 7 step drop to get it done.

T.O. can get open in the short, intermediate, and deep game so the offense always has a way to move the ball. He's also bigger, stronger, and yes, faster at this point than Moss.

I'd take TO over Randy any day. Randy is basically a one-trick pony. Granted, he does that one-trick better than anyone in the NFL (except Bob Hayes -- if the Bullet played in a pass happy NFL he'd put Randy's stats to shame). All Moss does great is run the go route and then outjump his defender. TO can run deep pretty well too but he can also go over the middle, break tackles, block, run routes, and stay out of trouble with the law better than Moss can.

It's TO For sure Moss is strictly an outside the hashmarks guy!

Posted by Michael @ 6:51 AM Mon, Nov 19, 2007

I'd take Irvin or Rice...oh, that wasn't the question. The last time I checked, neither TO nor Moss has a ring (although the likelihood of that changing in February is about 100%).

In the regular season, there's no question that, when he's on, there's no more devastating weapon in football than Moss. For 10 years, Cowboy defenses has his tread marks on their backs to prove it.

In the playoffs, at least TO has a game winner under his belt (for you young guys, see if you can find footage of TO's catch against Green Bay in the '98-'99 wild card game when he was with San Francisco). Moss doesn't have a catch like that on his resume.

In the end, I don't think you could really pick a loser if one had Moss and one had Owens.

The difference betwen the two is marginal but TO never stopped playing hard because he didn't like the team he was on. Moss the last few years at Oakland did next to nothing, running half speed on routes, not blocking ect. T.O. put forth MORE effort in practice than Moss did on gameday last year.

Albert, I want to know why thinking TO catching Jerry's TD record is absurd. At his current Cowboys pace it would only take 4.5 years to do it.

I think they put TO in as a DB for the Hail Mary because they knew there was a good chance of the the ball hitting him in the hands, then dropping harmlessly to the ground.

Can I just take both?

At this point I will stick with Owens. It's more than just what a receiver can do, but what the combination of QB and receiver can do. Romo and Owens are working together, so I wouldn't upset the balance.

We might now have Stallworth on the other side of the ball, but I fancy our chances once Glenn is back on the field.

All Moss does for Pats is stretching the passing zone to 50 or 60 yards deep for EVERY effing play, and they are unstopable offensively. Just ask yourself who else can do that.

The greatest advantage Moss has are his extremely long arms that make him play even taller than he is. TO is a better blocker and able to break through more tackles because of his body size, but Moss is somehow able to make catches with two or three defenders covering him almost routinely.

I'd take Moss over TO, but both are great.

Owens over Moss! Moss has Tom Brady maybe the best QB in the game and has one of the best O-line. That's why Moss has the slightly better stats.

If I need a 1st down I'll take TO over Moss...

Posted by rp @ 11:46 AM Mon, Nov 19, 2007

I see TO having another 100 yard game this Thursday against the Jets and maybe 1-2 TDs

Posted by SK @ 12:22 PM Mon, Nov 19, 2007

Mike and Saint Jimmy said it best. T.O is the only deep threat here whereas Moss has Stallworth, Welker. Watson is comparable to Witten. Have you seen how long Brady stands in the pocket and deliver his throws ? It's like all day and with that time all his wide outs are assembled in the endzone waiting for the ball.

With cowboys, T.O has to improvise sometimes to help out scrambling Romo and if you look at the 3rd conversion stat, T.O would be far better than anyone in this league. TDs alone doesn't make a WR great, it's all the other things.

Reality check: TO is benefitting greatly from an extremely creative O-Coordinator, a rock solid O-LINE and an emerging ALL-PRO QB. He has BELOW average hands, Below average quickness and has done most of his damage lately against totally confused zone defenses (great schemes by coaching staff using Witten as a decoy). He now has trouble with press coverage from "elite corners". Having said that he is the best we now have, he is an extremely large WR who is tough to bring down in the open field (not afraid to go over the middle) and he does have great chemistry with Romo. Terry Glen is a more dangerous receiver due to his ability to stretch the field (ala R & S Moss).

MVP candidate on the same team with Romo? As John McEnroe would say "You can't be serious", ROMO is right behind Brady and Favre in that discussion!!

Either can play on my team. Splitting no hairs here.

Posted by rp @ 4:00 PM Mon, Nov 19, 2007

jtt..you are really underselling TO..he has pretty good hands ..he hasn't dropped a ball in 4 games..is pretty quick for a guy his size..and can beat press coverage from elite corners..ask Champ Bailey who is tougher TO or Moss to cover..he will probably say TO

Posted by sk @ 4:26 PM Mon, Nov 19, 2007

Reality check: jtt needs to get a life!

Oops, didn't realize the T.O.-Moss debate had already been raging here. Never mind my trade proposition on the other blog!

Check out # of targets for Moss and Owens. Moss gets more completions per target and is the better receiver, more reliable.
