Wade won't talk trash about '79 Thanksgiving game

This won't be Wade Phillips' first Thanksgiving game at Texas Stadium. He was the defensive line coach when the Oilers came to town in 1979.

"I certainly remember who won the game," Phillips said, "but I'm not going to rub it in because I'm here."

The Oilers walked out of Texas Stadium with a 30-24 win. Earl Campbell rushed for 195 yards and two TDs, but the Cowboys blew the game by having 12 men on the field when the Oilers punted, setting up Dan Pastorini's 32-yard TD to Kenny Burrough.

Bum Phillips, Wade's dad and the longtime Oilers head coach, didn't mind rubbing it in at the time. He had a famous line during the postgame celebration: "They may be America's Team, but we're Texas' team."

Wade acknowledged that those words came out of his dad's mouth, but he did some damage control for the Phillips family. "He probably changed his mind since then, though," he said.

"They may be America's Team, but we're Texas' team."

Hmmm. I believe they are Tennessee's team now.

God does love the Houston Oilers...how many Super Bowls did they win? Well, certainly that "fine" city wouldn't give up on them?

Sometimes, silence isn't golden.

What I remember most about the Houston owner who couldn't stand having anybody else sharing the spotlight; in a pattern that began in 1961 & continued until the team left town, he fired every coach who won. I had a flashback to Good Ol' Bud when Jerry Jones fired Jimmy Johnson after his second Super Bowl win; but at least this owner seems to have developed a little humility.

I was 23 years old as I set in the cold end zone of Texas Stadium and attended that game back in 1979. Being a Longhorn and Cowboys fan it seemed like the best of both as Earl ran and Staubach had a very big game. If I remember correctly Too Tall Jones had "retired" that year to start a boxing career and we had acquired Colt DE John Dutton to take his place. Dutton had probably his best of the season that day. But everyting came down to that 12th man punt return we screwed up and the Oilers saddened me and all Cowboys fans by taking advantage of that opportunity. As you can see from these facts, I'll never forget that great Thanksgiving Day game.
