Calvin "Lucky" Watkins reports that the Cowboys have agreed to a four-year deal worth as much as $14 million with Patrick Crayton. He'll get a $6 million signing bonus. Glad to see the Cowboys get this deal done, and not just because the dude from DeSoto has proven this season that he's a solid No. 2 receiver. The best quote in the locker room is sticking around Valley Ranch!!! UPDATE: Crayton will have a $1 million base salary in 2008 and $1.5 million in 2009. He receives a base salary of $2 million in 2010 and $2.5 in 2011. In the final year of his contract, he can earn an additional $1 million if he reaches certain incentives. |

MEMO: THIS JUST IN
"BOBBY CARPENTER IS A BUST" WAISTED NUMBER "1" DRAFT PICK.
COWBOY NATION JUST THINK ABOUT IT, THIS NUMBER ONE PICK COULD HAVE BEEN THE OFFENSIVE LEFT GUARD THAT THE COWBOYS NEED RIGHT NOW, CAUSE KYLE "THIS YEARS MARCO RIVERA" KOISER SEEMS TO BE A JOKE AT LEFT GUARD!
JERRY GET ME A LEFT GUARD "330 + PLUS" PLEASE, AND STOP LISTENING TO THESE IDIOTS THAT WANT TO GIVE UP TWO COUNT IT TWO PICKS FOR 1 MR. MCFADDEN IN ARK. LOOK AROUND THE LEAGUE, I SEE ALOT OF LATE ROUND PICS STARTING AT RUNNING BACK. DON'T LOOK NOW BUT CLINTON PORTIS WAS ANOTHER LATER ROUND PICK STARTING IN WASHINGTON.
FINALLY JERRY, PLEASE GET ME ANOTHER WR "LARRY FITZGERALD" WOULD BE NICE, ANOTHER CB "DE-ANGELO HALL" WOULD BE NICE, A RANGIER SAFETY "TO REPLACE ROY WILLIAMS", AND MORE OF A HYBRID 3-4/4-3 DEFENSE WITH THE BONIFIED PASS-RUSHERS WE CURRENTLY HAVE ON THIS TEAM.

3.5 mil avg year...not bad considering the salary cap is going up over 100 mil in 08. Good deal all around. One less thing to worry about.
Posted by Saint Jimmy @ 9:20 PM Thu, Dec 27, 2007
Oh boy, Stupid in SA is going to throw another fit like he did with Jay Ratliff's deal. Funny that he hasn't been talking that much trash about Ratliff's deal since Jay has been playing even better and had about 4 sacks since then.
But congrats to Crayton. He has worked his butt off and proved to everyone that he can be a very solid #2 guy. I still think he's best as a #3 WR and his contract doesn't exactly prohibit him from being that.
Boy, NTOUCH4U2 is sure annoying.
Posted by Mike G @ 9:23 PM Thu, Dec 27, 2007
I have to agree with TG this deal seems like a great deal for the Cowboys. He will count 2.5 million against the cap next year and 3 million against the cap in 2009. I am not sure what he is making now but I think he could have received a bigger deal if he tested free agency so it is nice to kind of get a hometown deal done. Also NTOUCH4U2 please lay off of whatever it is you are smoking.

Now lets get Ken Hamlin signed!
Posted by tommex @ 9:37 PM Thu, Dec 27, 2007
Crayton has earned it, 7th rounder, remember ?
Two years on the practice squad w/ Romo surely
helped..think of the reps these 2 have run before
simulating the bad guys. Just think of it as Romo
in his 5th year getting his 4-year practiced WR
signed. Good deal for all, happy for Crayton.
btw - it's the caps ntouch4u2, like shouting...

Glad to hear Crayton is locked up. I agree he deserves it. No question Kosier needs to play better and will probably be surpassed by the talent we already have in waiting. Our receiver corps has great upside and don't automatically count Terry Glen out next year as well. Jerry will make a run at Darren McFadden...no question about it. People remember Brady James took a few years to blosssom, so don't count Bobby Carpenter out just yet. Everyone can't come in immediately and do what Demarcus did and is doing...nor say a Demeco Ryans. Our strong safety play will only continue to get better with or w/o Roy as he will be pushed. I say Roy is talented enough and determined enough to improve...and he will.

Outstanding deal. You know, the more I sit back and look at this team as a whole... the more I realize how good this team is. Just think, Witten is the best all around TE in the league. DeMarcus Ware is one of the top pass rushing and run stopping OLB in the league, if not the best. Tony Romo is playing as a top 3 QB in the league. MBIII is one of the hardest runners in the league, so valuable to our team. Gurode, Davis, and Flozell have become three very solid linemen in the league. We could go on, Ellis, Newman, TO, Crayton, Henry, etc... This team is good!!
And we're locking up our players so they stick around.
If the Cowboys could put together a solid draft (BIG IF) they could really add some young talent this offseason. I would love to see another talented WR and RB in this offense. Something with more big play potential. And a young corner late in the first or 2nd round would be nice too.
This team has a chance to have a big window.
Flozell and MBIII should be on the radar soon for a new contract this offseason. I almost expect the Cowboys to have to use the franchise tag on one of these players. These two players have a lot of bargaining power... and don't you know any team would love to have them (Parcells?)
MBIII will command a huge deal & Flozell will get slapped with the tag I bet. But Jerry knows how to get these deals done.
Posted by BSG @ 9:46 PM Thu, Dec 27, 2007
48 catches and 7 TDs this year. If a $6 million signing bonus is at the low end for a run of the mill receiver, then the deal is OK.
Posted by Not So Crazy Ray @ 9:53 PM Thu, Dec 27, 2007
That's a good price for Crayton. He's a nice guy to have. It's just that I think he's a great #3 but only an average #2.
NTOUCH4U2, I don't even know where to begin in commenting on what you have written. Well, actually, I do know where to begin. Please stop with the ALL CAPS. And you have your facts wrong about Portis. He was a 2nd round pick by the Broncos, then the Redskins traded future HOF CB Champ Bailey and a 2nd round pick to obtain him. Hardly a bargain. I do agree that we don't need to sell the house for another RB with Pro Bowler Barber on board.
And, why would the Cardinals make Larry Fitzgerald available? And, hasn't DeAngelo Williams proven to be something of a team cancer in Atlanta?

Now can we get Barber, Hamlin, K.Davis, Canty and Adams signed? To alleviate on the cap we need to trade Glenn, Ferguson, and Williams. Sign R. Williams the reciever and we're set for next season. You think it would be possible we get Maroney on a trade?
Posted by gary @ 10:29 PM Thu, Dec 27, 2007
great move...from what i read parcells might have offered this guy...i don't think however mcfadden is the guy to get because i don't want to lost two 1st picks to move up..b/c marion will be the man bnext year, i think a more logical choice would be felix jones; a return guy and a fantastic third down back...dallas could get jones and possibly a corner with these first rd picks.

I want Jerry Jones to fix NTOUCH4U2's caps lock button.

NTOUCH4US2 as a former ALL CAPS GRADUATE I say do all caps if you want... it doesn't hurt my eyes or anything.. it doesn't make me want to scream and turn off my computer..
As for the Cowboys.. I am telling you.. it's a perfect time to trade both 1st round picks and 09 #1 pick for Miami's #1 pick.. and get Mcfadden. Why give up 2009 #1 pick ? because Dallas won't need it.. with moving into the new stadium Free Agents will love to play for the Cowboys and they will need that extra money..
I do wish we had Larry Allen Back.. that would be nice...
Posted by davej @ 10:49 PM Thu, Dec 27, 2007
Good price for Crayton - fair deal all around. When you see the contracts that WRs get this offseason, you'll see how good a deal this is.
Regarding other free agents - MBIII is not going anywhere. He's a restricted free agent and I believe Jerry will get a deal done. Same with Canty.
I think Flo is the sacrificial lamb. You can't sign everybody and I think at least 2 or 3 teams will come after him with huge numbers. We have McQuistan, Marten, and Free being groomed to take his place.
Posted by 666 @ 11:03 PM Thu, Dec 27, 2007
Saint Jimmy,
Really admiring your restraint. Making good postings without calling anyone an idiot.
I agree I like Crayton as a 3rd slot receiver and I think thats exactly what he will be next year.
I see T.O., a new receiver to the team, experienced free agent, and then Crayton, Hurd, Austin, and Stanback. Assuming Jerry can bring in a top free agent receiver with speed to stretch the field like Terry Glenn would have if he were coming back, with all that young receiver talent just dont see the need in risking a 1st rounder on another rookie receiver. Save those draft choices for running back and cornerback. Maybe crank up another receiver in the 2nd round.
Posted by 666 @ 11:09 PM Thu, Dec 27, 2007
By the way,
some of you are making the assumption that Flozell Adams will be resigned. I think there are several good reasons that might not happen.
1. He is not a young lineman anymore.
2. His asking price may be way too high considering
his age and likely decline after what is now his
contract year.
3. There are at least two guys on the roster who
have the talent to step right in and possibly
be just as effective at left tackle as Flozell
will be next year - Pat McQuisten and Doug Free.
So I don't think it is an automatic thing at all that Flozell will be resigned.
Posted by cowboy128 @ 11:34 PM Thu, Dec 27, 2007
Agree, No Flo...recent draft choices fill the spot for much less money.
Felix becomes the new Jones in the backfield tandem with MBIII. Felix would be significantly cheaper than McFadden if Jerry Jones is going to pay Barber.
Sign Hamlin, dump Roy "Living Off His Sooner Days" Williams.
Draft a corner with the other first round pick and perhaps move Henry to a saftey.
Posted by JD @ 11:39 PM Thu, Dec 27, 2007
I criticized this guy earlier for running his mouth, but he is a talent and I'm glad he got the deal done. My favorite Crayton moment was a couple of years ago when Vinnie was the QB and PC caught a bomb on the last drive to steal a win. Can still hear Dick Stockon's call..."Crayton...He makes the catch!!!" He beat Shawn Springs and Sean Taylor, who came diving over and missed him. Hope he'll have a great game up here this w/e and recreates the magic.
Posted by Mike @ 11:46 PM Thu, Dec 27, 2007
666 you are being very presumptuous about our "talent ready to step right in". Left tackles don't grow on trees and it's putting the cart before the horse saying that guys who haven't ever played the position at the NFL level are ready to go do what Flo does.
Flo is a very good left tackle... and it even took him several years of actual playing time to get to that level.... but, oh yeah, Pat and Doug are just ready to step in and lock it down.
JD. Crayton beat Sean Taylor? I thought Roy Williams was the only safety that ever got beat.
Posted by Malcolm @ 11:56 PM Thu, Dec 27, 2007
I'm happy for Crayton and as a Cowboy fan I'm happy as well, but at the same time and I'm just being honest....I would have liked to have seen more production from Crayton. Too many games he was a non-factor when the opportunity was there for him to shine. He talks an awful lot. I was hoping he could have backed it up a little bit more production. From what I saw this year, he's very fortunate to get a deal of this magnitude. He can thank a busted up Terry Glenn for this deal.
Posted by dteowner @ 12:19 AM Fri, Dec 28, 2007
Like I mentioned earlier, this seems to create a logjam in the receiver corps for next year.
#1-TO
#2-Crayton
#3-Hurd
#4-Austin
#5-Stanback
#6-(game day inactive, so this will be a scrub/project)
Seems to me that, even assuming Glenn is on IR all year, that there's no room for a 1st/2nd round WR pick. They've got too much invested in Stanback to stick in him the #6 slot again next year. I would have let Crayton go and hoped Stanback or Hurd could fill the slot receiver role while drafting a new speedster to fill Glenn's role.
Posted by jtt @ 12:23 AM Fri, Dec 28, 2007
IMHO Crayton's signing is NOT a great/value deal; he has BELOW average speed (CANNOT separate from press coverage, could not even separate from the Carolina backer (Davis who?) this past SATURDAY....just because he talks great trash and is a self-made player does not warrant such a generous contract (Hurd and Miles are similar talents)......example of the GM already panicking due to Parcell's HIRE here in South Fla........we needed to save the bucks to replace Terry Glenn's outside speed......Hamlin has played well, but not special either (long runs by both Lions and Packer backs WERE SAFETY BREAKDOWNS)....NO CHANCE of trading Roy, no one in their right mind will take on his large contract.....
NEEDS: SHUTDOWN CORNER (then move Henry to safety), SPEED RECEIVER, BACK-UP RB, BACK-UP QB, depth at inside LB, PUNT RETURNER.....FERGUSON, Julius, Carpenter probably all gone, Flozell should be on the bubble, but the GM likes him a lot
Posted by jtt @ 12:40 AM Fri, Dec 28, 2007
...........Players that BP will covet include Keith Davis, McQuistan, MB III, Nate Jones, Proctor and Berger......that is his specialty, mining nuggets from the bottom of the draft; not sure he would take a chance on Carpenter, but he also has a mondo ego....agree with previous posters that our young tackles "seem" capable of filling Flo's shoes, but a mighty big IF...... BP would probably risk/take because (Flo's age, diminished mobility, run blocking and penalties ARE substantial minuses!!)
It is really too bad that Romo's unestablished place on the roster/the league back in September forced the team (the prudent alternative) to release Matt Baker and keep Brad Johnson......he seems to have what it takes.....
Posted by jtt @ 12:43 AM Fri, Dec 28, 2007
OOPS...... MATT MOORE!
Posted by Mike Stevens @ 2:06 AM Fri, Dec 28, 2007
It amuses me the people that are so sure about a couple of rookie OTs they have never seen play a down against regular season competition but are sure they can handle the LT position protecting Romo's blind side. The same people are quick to call Bobby Carpenter a bust but they have seen no more evidence of these Tackles in question than they have Carpenter and never mind that the LBs Carpenter can't beat out for starting position (OLB, his college position)were also 1st round picks. The MLBs were both 4th rounders but with more years of experience.
Posted by Mike Stevens @ 2:18 AM Fri, Dec 28, 2007
Davis Who? The guy Romo threw the ball to when Patrick Crayton failed to seperate from him against Carolina.
That would be Tom Davis, the outstanding Georgia DB drafted 3 picks behind Ware and 2 picks behind Shawn Merriman in the 2005 draft. That's who.
11 DeMarcus Ware OLB Troy State Dallas Cowboys
12 Shawne Merriman OLB Maryland San Diego Chargers
13 Jammal Brown T Oklahoma New Orleans Saints
14 Thomas Davis DB Georgia Carolina Panthers
15 Derrick Johnson OLB Texas Kansas City Chiefs
20 Marcus Spears DE Louisiana State Dallas Cowboys
42 Kevin Burnett LB Tennessee Dallas Cowboys
109 Marion Barber RB Minnesota Dallas Cowboys
132 Chris Canty DE Virginia Dallas Cowboys
224 Jay Ratliff DE Auburn Dallas Cowboys

Some comments here really amaze me. I'm glad that some of you are just bloggers, not GMs of the Dallas Cowboys.
Left tackle is one of the most important positions on a football team. Throwing an unproven rookie or 2nd yr guy in there just won't cut it. That being said, signing Flo is going to be tough since teams covet that prized LT. Yes, he is older and has at least 1 false start a game, but he keeps #9 clean manhandling the Trent Cole's and Michael Strahan's of the world.
And why do we assume TGlenn won't be back, moving Crayton back to the slot?
We all need to let go of the WR Roy Williams pipe dream. This isn't fantasy football although many of you think you are playing it. It won't happen.
Let's just be content for getting one of our FAs signed and move on to Barber, Hamlin, etc.
Oh yeah, playoffs in two weeks..bring on Garcia for some payback when he was with the birds.
Posted by Jayman @ 7:12 AM Fri, Dec 28, 2007
Perspective trumps the truth every time. Several folks on here seem to be skeptical of the Crayton signing because he just doesn't produce like a good number two.
Well, you're right. He's actually more of a number three. A very solid number three. You have to say Romo's top two targets are Owens and Witten much like Bradys' top two are Moss and Wes Welker.
Crayton compares better to Dante Stalworth. Craytons' numbers 48 catches, 689 yards, 7 tds and 33 catches for first downs. Stalworth has 43 catches, 665 yards, 3 tds and 25 first downs.
I'd say Crayton is more than carrying his load in this offense as a top tier 3rd option.
Here's something interesting though. Compare Witten to Welker. Welker 101 catches, 1053 yards, 8 tds and 58 first downs. Witten 94 catches, 1121 yards, 7 tds and 55 first downs.
Pretty good stuff that Witten guy is. Obviosly it hasn't hurt Witten or Crayton that Glenn was sidelined most the year.
Moss 92, 1393, 21 tds and 70 first downs.
Owens 81, 1355, 15 tds and 69 first downs.

MB3 - new deal (proven his worth)
Floz - new deal (he is top 10 in the league)
Hamlin - new deal (stability)
Canty - new deal (playing with passion this year)
Spears - don't let the door hit you on the way out
Julis - same as Spears
Fergie - still with us next year
Rat - slides over to replace Spears
(now we have a front line of Rat, Fergie, Canty with Tank and Hatcher as relief)
Draft:
1a = cb (never can have enough)
1b = wr (takes approx 3 yrs to learn, this one will replace TO when TO retires)
2 = rb (good value)
3 = NT
Forget about trading 2008 first 2 picks and 2009 to Miami for McFadden.
(Why would Miami trade #1 overall for a #20ish (from CLEV), a #30ish this year
and a #30ish next year? Big Tuna will have to eat some really bad fishes to make that trade.)
Posted by Tyler @ 8:37 AM Fri, Dec 28, 2007
I think Flo is gonna end up elsewhere at season's end. Barber/Hamlin are going to get signed and one of them might require the Tag. With all the other re-signings we have going around, it might just just come down to a numbers game. That said, Jerry knows the value of a good LT and may choose to Tag Flo over one of the other fellas, but that would cost him a larger amount that it would to Tag Hamlin. Personally, I'd love for us to keep 'em all, but it just might not be in the cards.
Oh yea, Crayton's deal is a steal. Great move.
Posted by Les Strayhorn @ 9:21 AM Fri, Dec 28, 2007
Trade Julious Jones he stinks!
Trade or move Spears to NT.
Running back and wide receiver from free agency and if not then the draft. Not sure which rbs are available but Micheal Turner was an interesting name.
Posted by scott @ 9:28 AM Fri, Dec 28, 2007
Why would they ever let barber go, that would be the worst move!!
Posted by Chris/Denton @ 10:15 AM Fri, Dec 28, 2007
The Crayton deal looks good to me and makes a lot of sense. It's realy NOT # 2 WR money but it's better than what a slot or #3 guy would get. He's not fast but has great hands, can move the chains and he's a great redzone receiver.
Crayton is basically an insurance policy for the #2 WR spot should Glenn get hurt next season. (Yes, Glenn will be back next year although I think it will be his last.)
He's also a GREAT 3rd down receiver to move the chains and can remember him catching several balls last year to sustain drives. Remember what Parcells said, "he has the best hands on the team."
Add to the fact that he's a decent punt returner, will make an occasional nice return like he did against Washington to put the team in position to win the game and at least a guy you can count on NOT to fumble the punt.
The Cowboys got the deal done now and used THIS years money to soften the blow to the cap down the road. Smart.
As for Flozell, I think he's gone. Like others have mentioned you can't sign everyone and I see the Cowboys moving Colombo to LT next year and either Marten or Free starting at RT. Or they might move "Bigg Davis" to LT and start Pat McQuistan at guard which is probably more likely with the money they have invested in Davis.
Keith Davis? I like him but don't feel he'll be back unless the Cowboys decide to give him a shot at the starting SS position which would be a good idea to me but doubtful. He's a nice player to have around but the Cowboys were already paying him a LOT of money since they had to counter the offer made by Sean Payton of the Saints.
Canty, Hamlin and Barber will get their money although I think they wait and do Barbers deal in the offseason.

I love all these couch GMs. Jerry will make it work ya dumb@$$es. Oh TG in Phila, it's already over 100 mil, 109, the floor is 81.75 (too keep cheap owners from fielding a crappy team, see Philadelphia). It'll be somewhere around 118 next year I belive...
Flo isn't going to be back. Nor Julius. And I believe Hamlin's going to get a long term, whereas Roy will be cut (after June 1), they eat his bonus the last two years.
Anyone got to the dallascowboys.com Pro Shop and notice Williams' jerseys are on sale?
Posted by Nicholas @ 1:59 PM Fri, Dec 28, 2007
Brian, you are the worst of the "couch GM's". The Cowboys are in the best cap shape they have ever been. They are not backloading contracts like in years past and have plenty of room to resign players and sign rookies and FA's. Not saying that Williams has been great, but your not going to find anyone better at SS in free agency or the draft.
I expect Adams to be back at a discount, but Jones won't take backup money.
