Crayton's eyes remain on '98 Vikings

Albert Breer   E-mail   News tips

After the Cowboys lit the Giants up for 45 points in the season opener, WR Patrick Crayton said he thought his offense was capable of challenging the single-season league record of 556 points scored, set by the 1998 Vikings.

So where do they stand? With 423 points, Dallas is second off the lead, but has fallen far off the Minnesota pace. They need 134 points in their final three games to break the record. That's an average of 44.7 per. Still, Crayton remains undeterred.

"I still got it in my sights," Crayton said with a sly smile. I’m not sure what we have to get it, but it’s probably about 40 points a game (a little off Pat) ... We might be getting in coach (Jason) Garrett’s ear – look here, we’re not going to run the ball today. Come out like Hawaii and throw like 70 times."

UPDATE BY MacMAHON: Corrected Einstein's math and have asked him to get a copy of this week's stats.

The hay's probably already in the barn on that one, but there are a couple this team still has a shot at.

First, there's the team scoring record of 479 points, set by the 1983 Cowboys. That one shouldn't be a problem for this group to get past. In fact, it would take an offensive collapse (an average of less than 18.67 points per game) for that not to happen.

And then there's another '98 Vikings standard to chase: Most wins in a regular season, which the Vikings share with the 1984 49ers, '85 Bears and '04 Steelers.

"We’ve already made some history for the Cowboys organization, and 15-1 would set the bar real high," Crayton said. "Just to do that, it would equal the Minnesota Vikings. That was the team we, well, I guess it was just me … I put out there."

The one caveat to all this is that the Patriots are likely to destroy the Vikings scoring record, and could well become the first team to go 16-0. The way Crayton sees it, these types of records can be motivators for everyone, which are good to have when you become the hunted the way the Cowboys have in the NFC and the Patrots are in the AFC.

"I’m pretty sure New England is trying to downplay 16-0, but everybody on that staff, in that building, on that team thinks about 16-0," he said. "They’re going to get (the opponent's) best. They’ve gotten it the last few weeks from teams. And we know we’re going to get the best from teams."

Excuse, last I counted it was 423...not 395. So that leaves 133 points at 44.3 pts a game.

Cowboys have 423 points this season not 395. They need to average 44.3 points to reach the 98 vikings.

David is correct

Mr. Breer needs to check his standings. The Cowboys have 423 points scored through 13 games. And yes they will break the team record for points scored in a season.

If I had an easy sports reporter's job full time covering your heros, I could surely get some simple stats straight. Anytime you want to take some well-deserved time off Mr. Breer, I will fill in for you.

breer sux -- go home! ....yankee lovin', chowdahead, patriot spy northern punk.

oh, by the way -- the patriots are cheaters!! pure and simple - fined, 1st round pick docked, shamed cheaters. they should be at least as villified as the alleged steroid abusers from yesterday's news

is it team points (off / def / special teams) or just offensive points?

Posted by yimyammer @ 3:56 PM Fri, Dec 14, 2007

Crayton needs to keep his eyes on what the Vikings did in the championship game they lost and make sure the Boys don't duplicate that type of performance

Wow, Albert's math isn't up to par? What a shocker.

Breer, don't think we didn't get that innuendo about (a little off Pat). When are you going to quit? This isn't your former newspaper. Wonder why they fired you? Are you too afraid to tell us? Come on, I'm waiting.

As for your math skills, Tim is tearing you a new behind. The next thing I know, Archer will be correcting your spelling and grammar. Which, for all intents and purposes, would not be far from the truth.

Which, of course, leaves us to the 64K dollar question: Why are you here? You can't spell, you can't add/subtract, and all you do is stir animosity. Please, just go back to that very cold hole in the wall you came from...and by chance, take your family with you.

Wow! Crayton watches Hawaii Warrior football? I feel honored. In any case, throwing the ball like, 70 times a game is exciting, but not like how people would think. They're not all going to be post patterns and streaks. Lots of hitches and screens and outs...

And I'm sure the Barbarian would have something to say about not running the ball that day. Who's he gonna hit for the love of Mike?
