In the Los Angeles Times story about the firing of UCLA coach Karl Dorrell, Chris Foster reports that Cowboys offensive coordinator Jason Garrett is "believed to be on the UCLA radar." Important to note here is that Garrett has not been around the college game since a brief coaching stint at his alma mater, Princeton, in 1990. But what's more important to remember is that Foster's piece is saying that UCLA's interested in Garrett, and not that it's necessarily mutual. No matter what the case is in this particular situation, expect a lot of this kind of love for Garrett going forward. |

The Patriots doesn't look like they are FINISHING OFF the Ravens at all... Since that's all that ESPN cares about !!!!
Dallas beat the so called GREAT PACKERS by 10 pts.. that's putting the game away to me !!

honestly i see us facing either the steelers or the colts in the super bowl. First we have to get there.

Hey! I just read that Manchester United has an interest in Garrett, too...
NOT!

MEMO TO JERRY JONES:
You have just payed your young QB 67 or so Million Dollars...Please Keep Your Offensive Coordinator in place, in other words, “PROMOTE” him to an Assistant Head Coach and “PAY” him Head Coach Money. Your young QB (Tony Romo) and Offensive Coordinator (Jason Garrett) are undoubtedly a sublime combination. Don't break this up.
Finally when Wade Phillips retires, “AS HE IS NO SPRING CHICKEN”, turn the operation over to Jason Garrett and furnish yourself and Cowboy Nation with a head coach for years to come.
Jerry your a great business man, please stop letting your young promising coaches go to other teams.

I have always thought that a high-level NFL coordinator taking a collegiate head coaching job is taking a step down...I mean, Garrett as the Cowboys' OC is a higher level gig than head coach of a college team. The NFL is the NFL, and UCLA is, well, college. Here's hoping that Jerry gives Jason a guarantee of being the HC when Wade steps down, giving him more time to mature as a coach, and make him the highest paid coordinator in the NFL.

I think there is no way Garrett even considers a college Head Coaching job. He has to be one of the frontrunners for a NFL Head Coaching job that opens and I believe he will stay in Big D since he is next in line for the HC job.

Should Jerry Jones sign Garrett to an extension now??
Let's just say the Cowboys win there first playoff, and move on to the divisional playoffs and win there, setting them up for the NFC Championship...
I think that would be enough for Jerry to lock up Garrett....

I think Jerry definitely gives Garrett a pay raise/contract extension at a minimum. Interesting thought about the Assistant Head Coach title, wasn't that Sparano last year? If so, does he still have that title?
Posted by RJS @ 7:10 AM Tue, Dec 04, 2007
Answering my own question, the official team website still lists Sparano as Assistant HC.
I guess it'll all come down to whether or not Jason wants to stick around until Wade retires anyway.

Great players come and go, great coaches have much better staying power than do players.
We can only hope Jerry won't let ANYTHING stand in the way of keeping Jason.

brief coaching stint in 1990???? what was he a player/coach?
Posted by gpaq @ 8:35 AM Tue, Dec 04, 2007
garrett has been impressive coordinator for 12 games! why is he a head coach candidate everywhere?
he does have romo, TO, Barber & a great OL in a weakened nfl.
i'm not saying he won't be a good head coach but shouldn't he be a good coordiantor for more than one season?

Whats the old saying, a coach gets too much blame when they lose and too much credit when they win..Lets not forget Tony Romo is making Jason Garrett look real good right now.

Am I missing something, or has Garrett's name been removed from the linked article? I don't see him mentioned anywhere in it.

Don't get me wrong - I'm just not convinced either. Norv Turner had the same accolades - how's he doing as HC? Play design and calling is one thing, Head Coaching is entirely something else.
The players make most plays work, not the play. Defenses knew Emmitt was coming left on third and two, but execution prevailed. Who's calling for JJ runs up the middle on third and fourth and short? Who refuses to throw to JJ out of the backfield more than run him into walls? How come the plays keep running Marion Barber into walls, forcing him to bounce backwards and out? How come Romo has to buy 5-7 seconds so often before he can release to an open receiver?
Not that Garrett isn't doing a good job. He is. I'm just not convinced he's as important as he's being made out to be, nor that he's our next best candidate for HC.

It is evident that the league has biased the refs regarding the Pats. It is disgusting to see the league "in bed" with a cheating coach. The moral fiber of the NFL erodes with every incident like how the Ravens were cheated by the refs. I am NOT a Ravens fan. Reminiscent of the interference call on the Cowboys while they were leading.

why would garrett think about being a head coach for a college team...he knows that if he waits a year he'll be offered the same position in the NFL...

A head coach sets the tone for the team. He's much more than a coordinator. Norv Turner's problem as a head coach is that he sets a very "blah" tone for the team.
Having said that, I think Jason Garrett will make an excellent head coach because of the attitude he brings. He is bringing aggression back to the offensive side of the ball and we haven't seen that is some time. We've only seen it recently with defensive coaches like a Mike Tomlin.
I said this when Wade was hired - I see him coaching 2 years of his 3 year contract and retiring. He's a Texan and he has lined himself up for lots of cushy jobs on radio and TV and other business opportunities by becoming the head coach of the Cowboys.

Note to JJ:
Pay Jason Garrett whatever it takes to keep him here, whatever it is DO IT!
I am a fan of Jason Garrett, he's a class act, always has been, and is one of the best things to have happened to the Dallas Cowboys since the ink on Tony Romo's contract dried!
Go Cowboys!
