The Cowboys offense is ranked second in the league overall, third throwing it and eighth running it, and that has more than a little bit to do with Jason Garrett. It was hard not to imagine, last night watching the Bengals-Steelers game, what he could do in Cincinnati. Difficult, too, to keep from envisioning what he'd be capable of in San Diego, where the Chargers have stumbled to a 7-5 start. And there might be openings in those two places, and other locales where Garrett would be a hot name. Garrett's 41, and could bring a dynamic presence to another club. Jerry Jones knows all this ... And takes it as a compliment. "For him to have that kind of recognition means we’ve done well," Jones said. "And that’s about all that I can say about it. I obviously think a lot of Jason Garrett. I’ve been really rewarded by, not just his work ethic, but just how well he’s taken to the play-calling and being the coordinator. "I think I’ve said this to y’all before, one of the best things about Jason Garrett is that when he leaves the room, everyone in the room, it was their idea. He’s got some real positives when it comes to his people skills that are really showing up here too. All of that means that if he’s really getting a lot of rave reviews, it means we’re doing well, and have done well." With that said, Jones didn't want to forecast what it might take to keep a star on Garrett's hat in 2008. "I don’t know want to get into that, that would be speculative, by the very nature of it," Jones said. "But I went a long way out of the way to get him." |

Hate to say this but the only way Dallas keeps Garret is to fire (retire) Phillips.
Doubt that they could work out any 'guaranteed successor' deal with Garrett like the Redskins have with (two?) different coaches, their O and D coordinators.
I'm hoping that Garrett decides he needs more 'seasoning' than 1 year as an O coordinator before he takes on the job as HC. His rise has been spectacular, I don't think he has all that much experience.

"But I went a long way out of the way to get him."
...this says a lot.
Plus, you know Garrett has watched Sean Peyton's 2nd year (and Cam Cameron's first). Certainly owners and GMs have. I guessing (hoping?) that Garrett stays for AT LEAST one more year, and maybe two.
But if we lose him, I think the new OC is already on staff, and he's pretty good, too.

Pay the boy, give him successorship. Do what it takes to keep this guy

Albert, forget about the San Diego job. Words out of San Diego media said that Turner would return for the next year no matter what happens this season. I think they will win a playoff game (the wild card game). Actually, without getting the top two seeds is a bless in disguise for Turner because then he can win a wild card game. The GM Smith can then claim Turner has won a playoff game while the previous coach could not.
By the way, Turner was a very successful offense coordinator on several teams, particularly on the Cowboys superbowl teams. I cannot image San Diego will take a chance on a young coach. Garrett has proven to be a very successful coordinator (though only for one year yet). But no one knows if he will be a successful coach. Just ask Turner, you will know the difference between a coach and a coordinator.
Even San Diego wants to get a new coach (maybe next year if Turner continues to struggle), they will go after someone like Cower.
As for the Bengals coach, there are too many questionable players on the team. Once a time, you could almost get the news some player on the team got into trouble. It is not a good place for a young coach to be. They need someone like Bill Parcells or Bill Cower who are intimitating to keep all those players in good behavor. You need much much more than X and O to be successful there. By the way, is it coaching the problem for Chris Palmer's awful performance? Most people rated Palmer as a top QB (to five in NFL). From yesterday's game, he played like one of the worst QB in the NFL right now. He could several opportunities to get his team back. His throws were not accurate and it was easy to rattle him. I think Chris Palmer is over rated. I do not think this is a good job for Garrett.
The possible best job for Garrett is New York Giants. Yes, Eli Manning struggled sometimes. But right now he is not highly rated. So if Garrett can make him a top QB (top five in NFC, for example), it will be considered a success. It took his brother several years to become an elite QB. He may never become as good as his brother. But definetely he can improve a lot. Yesterday, after he threw 3 intereceptions, he led his team for 2 TDs to come back to win in the 4th quarter in a hostile environment.
Garrett is from New York, and the Giants have a good organization and pretty good team. And it is a big media marker meaning money won't be an issue. Giants is the best job he can take.
So we all hope Giants will be in playoff and even win a playoff game (wild card game) so they will not change the coach! If Giants do not get into playoff, the coach will definetely be fired.

I, as well as a few others on here, have mentioned that though Garrett is a whiz at calling plays, what makes anyone so sure he would make a good head coach?????
Remember Norv Turner? Personally, I just don't see Garrett as a head coach. I know I am not the only one who sees this. If it is money he wants, then I am sure Jones will accomodate him, but if he is offered, I am sure he will at least test the waters.
I wish he would just hang around for a few years, and he could very easily slip into ours, and gain a little experience and trust along the way.
We all loved Turner as an OC, but none of us want him as our head coach.

Pay the man. Make him the highest paid offensive coordinator in the league for the next 2 years....and let him know that he is the "front runner" to be our next coach in the new stadium.

Even if the Chargers were to lose their final four games and not make the playoffs, coach Norv Turner will not be fired, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. The Chargers have won six of their past eight games. Turner has stated all along that his goal in tinkering with the offense was to have the Chargers peaking at season's end.

Garrett has no reason to hurry to just any HC job. This one is his when it comes his way if he even wants to be a head coach.
If Garrett is as smart as everyone says, he won't just take a HC right now just to get one right now.

To Jason Garrett: Best Coaching position in the NFL---Dallas Cowboys Head Coach. Wade Phillips time with the team = ???, but he sure is getting old. Jason, you have the ability to become part of Cowboys folklore--stay--the fans want you and the team needs you. Jones will reward loyalty when the time comes, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't be the highest paid OC in the league--b/c you should!

Excellent comments by all, JG would be foolish to skip town after just one year as OC (his agent will surely disagree) and the Sean Payton analogy fits here. At 41 he seems a tad young (looks even younger) and would benefit significantly from another year of seasoning; having someone else shoulder the media's glare of the head coach is another positive short term if he were to succceed Wade in Dallas. As someone has already pointed, out JJones' comment about "going out of our way last year" would indicate some hope/agreement that he will stay put for at least one more year.

Jerry:
Pay him.
Promise him.
Adopt him.
Do WHATEVER it takes!!! Hopefully, he realizes what a great future he'd have being the coach of America's Team in a beautiful new stadium, with a very talented young QB.

Jason Garrett ain't going anywhere... take 'dat to 'da bank! Joseph from H-Town is right: Garrett has the "...ability to become part of Cowboys folklore... the fans want (him) and the team needs (him). Jones will reward loyalty when the time comes..."
Now... as long as Garrett's agent stays out of his ear, as jtt suggests, then we're all set. How much moolah does the man need right now as the OC? He's the OC for the marquee franchise in the NFL, and he has to know that HC of the Dallas Cowboys will be his next step... maybe just in time for the '09 season when our heroes move into their new digs? Even if it's a year or two later... the HC position's his. I think JJ has alluded to that when he hired Garrett before bringing on Wade, and JJ's comment, "But I went a long way out of the way to get him..." has to mean something.

I think posters are too optimistic about the prospects of keeping Garrett. First there are always head coaching positions opening up -- call it the triumph of hope over experience. Secondly, in pro football, getting to be HC is what it is all about, no matter how bad the situation you're getting into: as Milton has Satan saying, "Better to rule in Hell than serve in Heaven."
Posted by Dave in Dubai @ 5:38 PM Mon, Dec 03, 2007
Garrett's skill as OC does not necessarily mean he'd be a great HC. Look at Norv and Martz.... hopefully Garrett keeps those failures as HCs in mind before he gets all antsy.
Mind you, Garrett could well turn out to be a better OC than Norv was for us... As Romo is a better QB than Aikman was and T.O. is as good as Irvin was.
MBIII is, of course, not near as good as was the Greatest, aka Emmitt.
Posted by Stevo @ 8:04 PM Mon, Dec 03, 2007
Dave,
I wouldn't say that about Aikman yet. Just cuz he doesn't have gaudy numbers doesn't mean he wasn't one of the most accurate QBs ever. The guy showed up in the big games. Let Romo win some post-season before you make such an egregious claim. And yeah, TO most likely is a better receiver than the original 88, but you gotta think of the intangibles.

I think you do whatever it takes to get rid of him. And I agree that SD will not be open this year no matter what happens because this will be an ego play and if AJ Smith gets rid of him, it's admission of a mistake so that won't happen.
I could see the Cincinnati thing but if I'm Garrett, I might take a look at a team that may have less talent but also less off-the-field problems.
But if I'm Jerry, I do a deal like Martz had in St. Louis regarding getting the job after Vermeil retires. I do whatever it takes to keep Garrett because he is a great young mind that could carry this team for a while.

Garrett's great and we will hate to lose him. Romo has not yet won a championship game, but he has already made several good coaches look great.
