Jerry should resign as GM

11:56 AM Mon, Dec 24, 2007 |
Tim MacMahon   E-mail   News tips

This might seem like an awfully strange time to say that, since Jerry looks like a genius with the Cowboys at 13-2. And it's not meant as a criticism of Jerry. This is about making sure that the Cowboys keep Jeff Ireland, the VP of college and pro scouting.

It would surprise nobody if Bill Parcells tried to bring Ireland to Miami. Matter of fact, it'd be surprising if that didn't happen. Peter King wrote about it extensively in today's Monday Morning Quarterback.

The NFL rule is that if a front-office man does not have control over the draft and free agency, and he is being offered a job with that final football authority, then his team would be obligated to allow him to interview if permission were requested.

Will that apply in Miami? Maybe.

Parcells contends that his GM will have that authority, and he even read some lines from his contract in an attempt to prove it. But it'd be a non-issue as far as the Cowboys are concerned if Jerry gave Ireland the GM title.

As the owner, Jerry would still have final say over all matters involving the Cowboys. He doesn't need a GM title to prove how involved he is in football decisions.

Great point and I agree. Thanks for getting back to football.

Absolutely! Jerry has done an outstanding job, but a talent like Ireland we can't afford to lose. Just look at the way Parcells is going after this guy! He is determined to snatch him away from us. Ireland has been instrumental in the selection of players in our recent drafts.
C'mon Jerry, we all know it was a big mistake to have lost Jimmy Johnson during your watch, let's not blow it with Ireland this time.Jerry needs to put his ego aside for the good of the team this time. With Ireland we will be able to compete for the supremacy in the NFL for a long time.

Jerry putting aside his ego is akin to a hungry bear passing up a meal. Just won't happen.

Jerry's ego knows no bounds, and believe me, he loves that GM title.

I would love to see Jerry Jones replaced as the Cowboys GM. For that matter, I would love to see Jerry Jones replaced as the Cowboys owner.

Please pardon me being uncharitable on Christmas Eve, but I feel he damaged the Cowboys when he changed them from a team, as under Landry, to a circus of egos, as he has created under a parade of coaches.

It all depends on wbere Ireland wants to be, Dallas or Miami under Parcells. If Ireland wants to leave, he will not be happy even he was forced to a GM title. I guess he can refuse to accet a "promotion" to GM. But if Jerry Jones is willing to give him a promotion, I would guess Ireland would like to stay put. Everyone know Parcells is a journal man he will leave Miami a 3 or at most 4 years. That job is not that stable. And you know the GM will be just a puppy to Parcells, Parcells will have a final say on everything.

I think Ireland will not leave unless he really likes Parcells a lot. In that case, you have to let him go. You do not want to keep an unhappy fellow. But I doubt it. If it is only money issue (promotion), Jerry Jones should give Ireland a raise.

In fact, why does not Parcells get his son-in-law from New England? Parcells must raid the players, coaches, and other guys from New England. Otherwise, New England will continue to dominate AFC East in the following several years. Tom Brady is still in his prime, you know. Parcells will fail to accomplish much if he does not do some damage to Pats. He needs to rob Pats, period, not Cowboys who are not even in the same conferecen as Dolphins. Of course, I doubt he is that smart, he is too loyal to his former assistant, Billichick. He is an old fasioned guy.

No way BigBill hires a GM who will have control over the day-to-day operation of the Dolphins. BigBill will be the man, if not in title, in reality. And, why would Ireland want to leave the Cowboys for a subordinate role with a floundering team that has been rumored to be up for sale? If there is any glory to be had with Miami, Parcells will get it, if he fails, someone else will be blamed.

Posted by Scott in Austin @ 1:07 PM Mon, Dec 24, 2007

The way Parcells likes to micro-manage everything there won't be a real GM or Coach at Miami. They'll have to run everything HIS way and do what HE tells them to do. When Jerry hired Parcells, he swallowed his ego and stepped aside... so Parcells basically had that position while he was here in Dallas and the coaches were hamstrung the whole time by his unwillingness to adjust. Hopefully Ireland will remember how much Parcells pouted on draft day when he didn't get to select Marcus Spears ahead of DeMarcus Ware.

Posted by Patrick @ 1:14 PM Mon, Dec 24, 2007

Agreed 100 percent.

Posted by Brandon B @ 1:17 PM Mon, Dec 24, 2007

Is this the same guy who had a part in drafting Marcus Spears, Bobby Carpenter, Jacob Rogers, Stephen Peterman, and Julius Jones in early rounds? One of the guys that thought trading down for Jones was better than drafting Stephen Jackson?

Some will say he deserves the credit for drafting Ware Ratliff, Canty, etc. and that may be true. However, if he gets credit for those picks he also gets credit for some of the spectacular misses like Carpenter and Jones over Jackson.

BTW, anyone think BP would be willing to trade for Carpenter? BP needs someone to carry his water and Carpenter has been more successful in that role than anything else in the NFL.

Man, people like Lewis need to get over it or get a new team!!! And I sure hope that people like Lewis never show any pride with the Cowboys having 5 Superbowls or else they'd be complete hypocrites that deserve less respect than they give to Jerry.

Posted by Mike @ 1:44 PM Mon, Dec 24, 2007

As I understand it, Parcells was on his own went he went after Rogers, and it was Parcells who made the trade with the Bills when we could have had Steven Jackson. I've also read where it was Ireland who convinced Parcells that Spears would still be there at 20, so we could go after Ware. If we could somehow parlay this into getting Miami's 1st pick, it might be worth it. Otherwise, he's definitely a keeper.

Saint Jimmy,

I have chided you before for calling other bloggers idiots, but in the case of Lewis,
you would have had my blessing.

Don't know where this idea came from, but keeping Jeff Ireland by making him the GM is the best idea I have heard recently. In my humble estimation, with the exception of Tony Romo, losing Ireland would hurt the cowboys certainly more than losing any other player to Bill Parcells.

This could be real possibility. You have to think as Jerry hits 65 he might be a little tired of the week to week grind a GM has to undergo and maybe ready to share some of the responsibilities. You can bet he would still be the primary decision maker anyway.

Sounds like a great idea to me, and Lewis, I will say it for Saint Jimmy - You ARE an idiot!

Posted by Jeff @ 3:51 PM Mon, Dec 24, 2007

Jerry gets the blame when we lose, he should get the credit when we win. I loved Saint Tom and Saint Jimmy, but that was years and years ago. Kids that weren't born when Jimmy was a coach are now early preps. It is time to let the records speak for themselves. Jeff Ireland was a good hire, but he is not a GREAT hire. Wade Phillips was a great hire. Jeff Ireland was at the right place and the right time and knows football talent. But, as has been mentioned, he has whiffed. All of them do. The thing is either you trust Jerry or you don't. I have come to trust that he wants to win more than any fan in the world, and it has nothing to do with money or ego. It has to do with pride in the Dallas Cowboys franchise. Jerry is the ultimate fan. I wish all the fans were like that.

Posted by Mike G @ 3:57 PM Mon, Dec 24, 2007

Just so everyone remembers, Jeff Ireland is one of Bill's guys. He pushed out Larry Lacewell (one of Jerry's guys) and gave the position to Jeff Ireland. He will jump to Miami as soon as Bill asks the only thing Jerry can do is try to force the Dolphins to give him compensation but the most you will probably get is a 4th round pick but do not hold your breath Bill knows what to do to get around this. He already has referred to what the contract says.

Posted by Brandon B @ 4:22 PM Mon, Dec 24, 2007

C'mon, Mike, you can't cherry pick draft picks so that one person or another gets credit. So be it. Bill drafted Peterman, Rogers, Jones, and Carpenter, and Bill should be flogged for missing on those picks so badly. BY THE EXACT SAME LOGIC, Bill drafted Ware, Ratliff, Canty, and Hatcher, and he should be lauded for making those picks.

It's hilarious when people start saying one particular individual is responsible for the bad picks and another is responsible for the good picks.

Ask yourself this. If Ireland is so great at evaluating talent that BP is willing to make him GM (and many on this blog are willing to anoint his a$$), then why would BP draft a player Ireland didn't rate well? Maybe, just maybe, Ireland missed on those players along with the rest of the Cowboys organization. *gasp* Am I committing heresy to suggest Ireland isn't a draft guru like the esteemed Goose?

Sorry, but the Cowboys (JJ, BP, and Ireland) have made some great picks and some bad picks since BP came to Dallas. Personally, I think the draft improvement has been due mainly to Larry Lacewell going to find his happiness elsewhere and JJ letting real football people make decisions.

Who cares? GM's are a dime a dozen. Any very experienced good coach can do it. We have a hundred of them in Texas, and probably half a dozen on the current staff. The main thing is to build personnel around Romo's talents and preferences. Since Romo wasn't a Parcells pick or his style, we should probably turn to someone who likes Romo's style of play.

Every time someone might leave it sounds like the end of the world around here. Everyone is replaceable except Romo.

Can't see where the picks have been all that great over the past few years. Some were, but most were hit or miss.

if i wanted to hear a bunch of gay cowboys complain i would have turned on broke back mountain! shut up! give it time all you cowboy fans will want parcells back just like with jimmy johnson

Posted by Jason @ 7:06 PM Mon, Dec 24, 2007

Parcell's put the former scouting department out to pasture and the results have been profound. I e-mailed Jean Jacque Taylor last year wondrinf if there was any chance Parcell's might vacant the coaching spot and assume a GM type duty with the Cowboys, his answer: an unequivocal NO. Jerry would not allow it.

If I'm Jeff Ireland though, would I rather want to work for the Cowboys and Jerry Jones than the Tuna? In Dallas, he'll be well paid and pressure won't be nearly as intense as Miami.

Posted by Jeff @ 5:38 AM Tue, Dec 25, 2007

The pressure in Miami is not from the fans or owner. It is from a fat can of Tuna. It is an artificial stress. But remember, Ireland is a Parcells guy. TO was not. If you are a Parcells guy, you can do no wrong. Carpenter is a Parcells guy. Watch for him to be in a Miami uniform soon. And, I bet he starts for that team, at least for a while. When you are on top in the NFL, the goal is to find another team to take to the top so you can make HUGE money for the one that follows, plus there is ego involved too. GM instead of scout? Yeah, he's a goner if Miami wants him.

Posted by Derek @ 10:09 AM Tue, Dec 25, 2007

Jerry is a complete bust as a GM. I have watched him run the best team in the league into the ground in the late 90's and early 2000's. Poor drafts and free agency decisions killed us. I have said it before and I'll say it again, Jerry clearly is one of the best owners in the league and one of the worst GM's. Jerry is so bad as a GM that many fans have more knowledge concerning the player personnel decisions. Parcells saved the Boys only to let Jerry run them into the ground again!

Posted by Lee Sebel @ 10:25 AM Tue, Dec 25, 2007

Sounds like a plan. There have been some missteps in the draft (Stephen Peterman, anyone?), but Ireland must get his props for the shape of the current roster.

Posted by cowboyssince72 @ 11:41 AM Tue, Dec 25, 2007

It doesn't matter who is in control or GM. Jerry needs to send those two late, late 1st rounders with Bobby Carpenter to Parcells in Miami. And in return get that first overall pick. So we can draft Darren McFadden. Get rid of Julius "1 yd loss" Jones. Start Marion Barber, switch with McFadden to keep them both fresh. Now the running game is unstoppable! T.O., Glenn (if he plays next year), Witten, and Romo will cruise to another Superbowl. Cowboys win back 2 back Superbowls. HOW BOUT DEM COWBOYS!!!!

Posted by william @ 7:36 PM Tue, Dec 25, 2007

Isn't it time for Jerry Jones to tend to his legacy he will be leaving behind in Arlington? He could do this by leading the way in figuring out how the city of Arlington can acquire means to complete in time for the superbowl a light rail line between the gateway that is DFW airport and the city's entertainment district.
