The NFL announced that SS Roy Williams has been suspended for one game without pay, punishment for his third horse-collar tackle of the season. From the NFL release: Grabbing the inside collar of the back of the shoulder pads or jersey, or the inside collar of the side of the shoulder pads or jersey, and immediately pulling down the runner is a 15-yard personal foul penalty. Williams was penalized for making such a tackle against Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb in Sunday’s game in Dallas. Williams was warned a suspension was possible after his last violation of the "Roy Williams Rule," so this shouldn't be considered a surprise. |

BfS !
I can hear it now. All the R"Roy can't cover" Einstein's will say The Cowboys will be better off.
For just this once, since it's late December, I hope they are correct. Maybe we'll be better in coverage, but guys, Watkins is hurt and he will be sorely missed on 1 and 2nd down and short situations. Perhaps those guys are right, and we'll be okay in nickel and dime pkgs.
We'll see now.

Suspend Romo for unsportsmanlike conduct, bringing a hasbeen to the game

As Roy's last fan on the planet, I have no problem with the suspension. What about Hamlin's hit? I only saw one replay but it looked about as viscious and illegal as I've ever seen.

I personally think it is about a sorry and poor excuse for NFL to suspend Roy. If that is the case then every guy that tackles someone from behind by the shoulder pads should be suspended. It is a shame when not just one but many penalities are named after Cowboys players. Go Ahead NFL keep on hating you will still not keep us down. We will take down your Pats or should I say wanna be America's team in the SuperBowl. I have said it all year and I will say it again Roger Goddell is in somebody's back pocket and they don't wear blue and silver!!!

Typical NFL League anti Cowboy crap!

I dont understand how a player gets suspended for a tackle, and then our QB coach gets suspended for taking a substance to improve his health, but no one gets suspended for stealing signals.

ET Bass, I'm still a big fan of Roy. But I hate the suspension ... it's just such an inconsistent rule.
Whatever. Everyone loves to pick on Roy for his "coverage flaws" ... just wait until our "camp body" friend picks apart Watkins next week.

I thought Hamlin's hit was fine, he led with his shoulder and took on a guy bigger than himself. This is football and I worry we've gone too far the other way sometimes. In regard to Roy, he's nothing special in the NFL and whether or not anyone agrees with it or not, you aren't supposed to tackle from behind like that especially if the rule was named after you.
Roy looks very desperate sometimes and of course, lost. A safety uses his head as much as his physical skills which may be the real problem.

It looks like Roy has become his own worst enemy. Our strong safety can no longer play like the All-Pro we all know. He plays tenative and will continue to. Lets face it, Roy's a marked man and his history may bite us in the playoffs. Maybe this is good for the team. Someone has to step up now and maybe they can cover the tightend. Sorry Roy can't be Roy anymore.

Forget about Williams' coverage woes and his apparent repeat offending with this rule for a moment, I have some sympathy for him here.
The rule is very specific about "grabbing the inside collar", but on at least one occasion where he has been flagged this year (and possibly yesterday as well) he has grabbed the outside of the shirt. However, the action of taking a firm hold has folded the material over so that his hand looks like it is reaching inside. Try it yourself on your shirt cuff. In fact, when this happens, his fingers don't have direct contact with the inside of the shirt at all.
That would explain why he is surprised and angry at what should otherwise have been an obvious punishment to him.
The rule needs to get less particular about the "grabbing the inside collar" specification, or the officials need to start recognizing that tackles from behind are not always a violation of that clause.

He should have been suspended longer. If I were Jerry I would draft the best Safety on the board in the upcoming draft and then cut Roy the next day. Salary Cap hit be damned. He is washed up. The only reason he horse collars is that he is too slow to make a straight up tackle. He is DONE.
