Cowboys coach Wade Phillips steered through his press conference today, and steadily got more and more passionate in his defense of S Roy Williams. By the end or the ordeal, you'd have thought he was on 31's legal team. "Roy’s been in on 105 tackles now, and three of them have been on that variety," Phillips said. "I mean, a guy that does it one out of 15 plays, is he worse than Roy? Percentage-wise, certainly he is. Roy’s involved so much in all this, and it’s not a horse-collar tackle if you’re tackling in the line of scrimmage. But if it’s outside, it is. "So where you are … there's a lot of factors involved in my opinion. But that’s why they have the process. That’s why we have the appeal. We’ll see what happens." Phillips said he isn't involved with the appeal process, but he does know that this situation hasn't helped Roy as a player. In fact, the coach says that this whole issue has affected Williams as a player. "I think just holding it over him the whole season hasn't helped him," Phillips said. "They said if you do this again, you might be suspsended. Well, it's hard to play defensive football that way without being your aggressive self. But it's soemthing he knew about, and we understood the process." |

THAT IS ONE HUGE CROCK WADE,
I AM LOSING RESPECT FOR YOU OVER THIS.
ITS ONE THING TO HAVE YOUR PLAYERS BACK,
BUT ROY HAS HAD TWO YEARS TO ADJUST TO THIS
RULE AND SO HAVE YOU.
HELL, ROY ORDINARILY HARDLY USES HIS HANDS AND ARMS WHEN TACKLING ANYWAY. YOU ARE DEFENDING THE UNDEFENDABLE AND MAKING YOURSELF LOOK LIKE AN IDIOT IN THE PROCESS.
THERE ARE A LOT OF RULES IN THE NFL WHICH ARE QUESTIONABLE BUT PLAYERS HAVE TO ADAPT. HELL, YOU EVEN SAID IN THE PRESS CONFERENCE THE OTHER DAY THAT ROY DIDNT GET A WARNING FOR HORSECOLLAR FROM THE NFL. THATS HOW MUCH YOU KNEW ABOUT THE SITIATION.
WHERE WERE YOU WHEN YOUR ASSISTANT COACH, WADE WILSON WAS SUSPENDED FOR 5-GAMES FOR DOING VIOLATING ANOTHER "QUESTIONABLE" RULE. ARE YOU DATING ROY'S SISTER OR SOMETHING. SHUT UP AND COACH THE TEAM.

I think everyone realizes that you should stick up for your own players sure... But this is BS and Wade is seeming country dumb about this... No offense to anyone.. I really really wonder if this even 1 percent ticks T.O. off.. because it happened to him.. and yesterday Wade talks about falling on the leg but in T.O. horse collar Roy didn't fall on his leg..
Wade is being a idiot about this.. As for Roy.. he is a Joke.. a joke to the media , a joke on the field. and I am glad.. really really glad that people like Hamlin and Barber gets the Pro Bowl votes instead of Roy and Julius.. because it means Step Ya Damn Game Up !!! Julius should be a shame of himself.. and I notice with BOTH of them that when they do something that is there own fault that Both Julius and Roy both get mad like they were Framed.. Please Jerry send them Both packing at the end.. I don't care if they end up being the Super Bowl MVP's get rid of both of them.. and Wade... Don't make no enemies in that NFL New York Office.. we have enough of them..

Phillips is making himself look like a total Ass. How many warnings does Roy need. Not only is he risking other players careers, but it is also a lazy way to tackle. He needs to lay out and wrap their legs, of course wrapping up is not in his technique.
Now for the Cowboys sake I'm hoping the suspension get delayed for a week and hopefully Watkins will be back.
That f*&^% Captcha got me again. How bout you morons come up with a better security system. Don't make me go to that homer site

It amazes me at how easy people think it is for someone to change the way they play football. Yes it has been a couple of years since they passed the rule but like Wade said, sometimes it's within the rules to tackle this way and sometimes it's not, it would probably be better if the NFL just made it all one way or the other. Roy has been tackling like this for a long time now and I'm sure it's just somewhat instinctive for him at times. Roy is a very nice guy and is anything but a dirty player.

Sheesh, dudes...over-react much? Jerry defended Roy on the radio this morning. Does that make him an idiot, too? Does it still make Wade an idiot that he's defending a player on HIS OWN TEAM who's also being defending by HIS BOSS? Calm down.
And don't compare it to the Wade Wilson situation. He did that when he was working for another team. There's no reason for anyone with the Cowboys to get involved in all that and Jerry Jones specifically said they were staying out of it, even though they were supportive of Wilson and wouldn't take any action by the team. Its reasonable to presume that's what he told Wade Phillips to do also.
Roy didn't hurt McNabb. Didn't intend to hurt McNabb. If he grabbed him by the facemask would he get suspended? No. Same "personal foul" call. Same 15 yard penalty. No fine. No suspension. Jerry pointed out the "chop-block" technique had resulted in more injuries, but never a suspension.
Lighten up a little and realize there are actually 2 sides to this story. Especially when it comes to suspensions. What is with all the Roy hating going on. He's a back up Pro Bowler for goodness sakes. I'm not an OU fan either, but all you UT lovers out there need to graduate from college and give it a rest.

STFU 666. You don't know what you're talking about and I'm sick of your constant ranting about Wade Phillips. The team is 12-2 and you're an idiot... that's why you act like you're some sort of football afficionado. You're a dreamer -- you're just a guy -- not a football genius. Just admit it and let the professionals do their jobs.

Albert,
you know that the fans can watch the presser with the coach on the cowboy's website right?
Wade seemed his usual, monotone self. If anything, he probably got a little annoyed by the continuous line of questioning over roy williams and his suspension. You should stick to film review instead of drumming up controversey. You have plenty of cronies at DMN who do that for a living.
Mooreman, go to a homer site? Is this site a cowboy's bashing site? or just a roy williams bashing site?

Scott in Austin,
Shove it!
You are typical of the nutts who think because the team is 12-2 all is well.
I have a right to my opinion on this blog just like you do and my opinion is that Wade has made a big fool of himself over this issue.
If you dont like it thats just tough as hell.

I'm just glad you found your Caps Lock key, Room 666.

Wade seems very dumb. Now his own players are split on this isseu! A rule is a rule. Williams was warned too. Did Wade know how the rule came from? It was because Williams breaking Owens leg! For god's sake, now the offense and defense players are split and a civil war has started in the locker room. Why could he just say he did like the rule, but a rule was a rule?
Do you know why he had not won a playoff game? He now has done more than anything else to stink the team. I have a feeling the team will lose in the divisional playoff just like San Diego did last year!

666, guess I hit a nerve and maybe you're realizing that you are "just a guy". It's sad how you get on this blog and act as though you have some sort of insight or football acumen to spout your crap. I guess I should just let it go since each time you blog you show the level of your intelligence anyway... I'm sure Wade is really reading your comments and taking them to heart.

This is nuts. Williams has changed his technique. Look at the archive photos from 2005 and see his hand clearly inside the shirt and pads. This year he is grabbing the OUTSIDE of the shirt. You can see it from pictures posted here at this blog after previous incidents. That is - according to the detail of the rule - a legal tackle.
There has been such hysteria generated about his play this year that all objectivity seems to have been tossed out the window.
Williams ranks joint 5th in the NFL for solo tackles by a SS - yet people accuse him of not being able to tackle.
The defensive scheme places him oftentimes where he can only tackle the receiver and not defend the pass. Yes, he gets lost in coverage, but he is still the 12th ranked SS for passes defensed.
He isn't the hero that we all dreamed he would be when he stormed into the league and laid the wood on many unsuspecting opponents. We all whooped and hollered when he hit guys so hard they could suffer a concussion, but now everyone is getting uptight because he insists on continuing to use a technique that he believes is within the letter of the rules.
Grabbing the OUTSIDE of the shirt should be and is legal, and when he does it, he should be treated the same way as all the other tacklers who use the same technique and get away with it every week.

The rule is absurd. It's tackle football. Next thing you know, they'll be trotting the quarterbacks out in red jerseys and following that up with flags.
Bring back the clothesline and leg whip if you ask me. See if the Patriots go pass happy then!

Jebus, you'd think in reading the blog this week Roy Williams played for Philly and did a cheap shot on Romo. Good for Wade to stick up for his players. I'm not a Roy fan but he's a Cowboy and he's a better option than Davis, Watkins, etc. Fix it after playoffs but for now, he's what we got. Stop crying about it.
Also, we're 12-2 and had THREE poor games (Pats, Philly #2 and Detroit) this year. So, you thought the Cowboys sucked against Vikings, Philly #1, Giants #2, Redskins, Jets and Green Bay? If so, you'll never be happy with this team so give up.
Tired of reading people jumping off the cliff. Either do it or shut up. This is a good team. Two bad games back to back doesn't wreck the effn season. Damn...

Scott,
I don't really think 666 gives a damn what you think of his postings.
I dont always agree with him but he is anything but stupid. Overly passionate at times, like with Wade, but generally has good postings.
Maybe you should post your own thoughts instead of ripping someone else.
