Warm, fuzzy moment for first-time Pro Bowlers

Tim MacMahon   E-mail   News tips

Wade Phillips gathered his team after practice and announced the Cowboys' Pro Bowl selections. There was a whole bunch of hooting and hollering, especially for the guys making their first NFL-paid trips to Hawaii.

K Nick Folk got a bunch of congratulations, but it's not like the rookie had to wait long. Same goes for third-year RB Marion "The Barbarian" Barber. CB Terence Newman and FS Ken Hamlin are fifth-year guys, and Newman felt like this was a long time coming. It was sweet for Hamlin, too, since there was little interest in him after Seattle let him go.

But it was sweetest for RG Leonard "Bigg" Davis, a No. 2 overall pick who was labeled a bust by some folks after six seasons in Arizona. The loudest roar came when Phillips said Davis was headed to Hawaii.

"I think it helped our team," Phillips said. "We got our juices flowing again. They got excited about their teammates. I got a real feeling that we got back as a team, over losing a game. Just … boom! We're excited about our team, our players."

just an observation, but isn't it interesting that our pro bowl running back doesn't even start for us?

Hilarious that Trufant beat out Newman as the starter!

Reminds me of Luke and Han in trying to escape the Empire. When Luke shoots down his first Tie fighter Han says "That's GREAT kid now don't get cocky!".

How can Wade not start Barber now!

The players and Coaches around the league, not to mention most of the national press acknowledges his value to this offense,

everybody but our coaches.

You gotta start him and you gotta give him the majority of the touches - If Julius continues to get half the carries, no way can Romo, Owens, and company overcome that to win a Super Bowl. This guy can be every bit as valuable as Witten or Owens if he gets to play more - and its not just his average per carry. No other player except Romo brings as much excitement to the offense as Barber does.

Hey 666:
I agree that Barber should get most of the load, be the starter, etc. What I don't agree with is the idea that a Pro Bowl selection should have any impact on that decision. Roy's gonna be back in the Pro Bowl again (due to Sean Taylor's posthumous selection) but that doesn't make me any more confident in him. It's a beauty contest, and Marion won, deservedly. Let's not read anything more into it than that.

You have to give the Boys & Jerry credit for signing Leonard "Bigg" Davis, a move that was panned by a lot of national and local media "experts"...

Hope the most pro bowlers Team will play like a "pro" team and put away the next two games !

We can only hope that this gives the much needed mood change but not over-confidence !

someone please talk some sense into Garret and advice him that his pro bowl running back is eager to go out and tear it up !!!

start Barber and give this team a much needed spark

Thad,
I agree that pro-bowl is a ordinarily a beauty contest and many guys make it on reputation or national identity more than talent, but in the case of Barber, who doesnt have even a 1,000 yards due to not being a starter, his election is different.

It says the coaches and players around the NFC, who count for 2/3 of the votes, consider him to be an elite back, not a beauty contest winner.

For the love of everything sweet and clean, would you stop with the monikers? You started the season with "Train Rex" Grossman that you posted 20 times. Then it's "superstar columnist [insert name]" a few times a day. Now you won't give up "The Barbarian" if your life depended on it.

Stop it. It's Christmas. Give the readers a gift.

I think Wade's comments were spot on about the team reaction when announcing the Pro Bowlers at the end of practice. The players were discouraged, the team was raked nationally, everyone blaming Jessica, Roy got horse collared, Tony got the thumb...and the players roared in unison for their own teammates that got voted in. That's a good team builder and exactly what was needed to get everyone back in the groove and focused.

I'm curious if there has ever been a player who never started a game named to the Pro Bowl (not counting special teams selections)? Likewise, has there ever been a rookie kicker in the Pro Bowl?
