T.O.'s publicist wants the world to know that he was just joking about Jessica Simpson this morning. You can judge for yourself by listening to the conversation. And you can vote here. T.O. had just finished saying he was looking forward to sipping mai tais and looking at bikinis when I asked for his thoughts about Simpson. Here's the transcript: Me: "Speaking of looking at bikinis, what do you think about all the hubbub about Jessica Simspon and Tony Romo?" T.O.: "Right now, Jessica Simpson is not a fan favorite in this locker room or in Texas Stadium." [reporters laugh] Me: "Why not in this locker room?" T.O.: "I think with everything that has happened, and obviously the way Tony played and the comparison between her and Carrie Underwood, I think a lot of people feel like she's probably taking his focus away. Other than that, she was at the top of my list until last week." [reporters laugh after last line; T.O. had a straight face during the first sentence] Me: "She looks good, but you want to see her on TV and not at Texas Stadium." T.O., playing to the crowd: "Oh, I've got a message for her when we make the playoffs. Just stay tuned." [reporters laugh as he walks off] UPDATE: My take? He wasn't kidding when he said Simpson isn't a favorite in the locker room or when he talked about Romo's focus. |

T.O.'s publicist wants the world to know that he was just joking about Jessica Simpson this morning.
Don't you mean:
Tim's employers want the world to know that he was just joking about Jessica Simpson this morning.

i'm not a fan of TO & think he's a jerk. I was sure he was serious when i read the transcript but it does sound like he was joking when i listen to it.
tim, was he smiling when he said this or did he look serious??
i hope he was joking. if not, if i'm romo, i'm pissed. message to TO: one of you is the franchise & the other is TO.

Everyone just relax...this is obviously media hipe for her...thats why Jess jumped up with her Romo jersey on when her dad showed her she was on TV.
Hopefully, Tony will soon understand that some people only latch on for the ride to get some pub...although I would not mind being used either to get my hands on MS Barbie.
Posted by TerriL @ 5:58 PM Wed, Dec 19, 2007
I guess TO has 28 million reasons to joke about Jessica too.
Posted by Keith @ 6:31 PM Wed, Dec 19, 2007
I bet he was serious too. Athletes are very superstitious. Until the 'boys win a game while Jessica is in the stadium, she will be seen as a jinx.
Posted by Jeff @ 6:31 PM Wed, Dec 19, 2007
I swear to God people are stupid sometimes. Its a BIG difference between your average everday wife/girlfriend showing up to a game. Enough about Bret Farves woman. She's nothing. A NOBODY! But Underwood? Famous Country artist. Simpson. Famous Pop artist. That equals attention and deterred focus. This is football, not The Dating Game. I agree with T.O. 100%. The Cowboys NEEDED that win to LOCK a Home Field Advantage to send the Packers to Dallas. His focus was off. His thumb didn't hurt until the 3rd quarter with 10 minutes left. If it hurt from the start of the game, why did he play? Because of his lost focus, this forces the Boys to win the next 2 games. Enough about T.O. not catching passes. He couldn't hit a whale on target. Romo was trying to impress. His thumb is an excuse. You want to get involved with a FAMOUS CELEB? Do it in the off season. Get your LUST and fatuations out of the way. Jones is not paying him damn near 70 million dollars to show Texas Stadium as the House of Lust and Love. He wants to win. Romo should start thinking the same.

JS did not cause the loss to the Eagles that would just be crazy. It wouldn't be crazy to think that this is an important time of the season that requires mental preparation. If our QB
is off at clubs nightly, jetting to LA, and talking to a few different girls it could cause him to loose his focus. Over a period of three wks
his fans noticed it so I'm sure his team mates noticed. I'm glad TO said something joking or not
because someone need to. Tony reprensents the Cowboy org. and he needs to decide what his priorities are at this time of the year. Football or the celebrity lifestyle. Why Coach Phillips hasn't said something I'll never know? As for JS,
I think blonde bombshell is the nicest thing I've
heard. Tony, you can do much better. Do you want to be blinded by camera flashes everywhere you go and have your conversations leaked by family to the media? Get out now while you have a good reason.

As a long-time Cowboy fan, I think what Parcells said last year about Romo is quite telling:
"He needs to decide whether he wants to win, or be a 'celebrity' quarterback."
It's pretty clear he's made his choice.....buh-bye homefield, buh-bye Super Bowl.
Posted by Chris @ 6:49 PM Wed, Dec 19, 2007
I'm behind TO all the way. He could of been joking
but who cares the point is Tony has been making some boneheaded decisions on how to spend his free time and who to spend it with. If he wants to trash his reputation that his business. But he is not going to trash the Cowboys chance to go to the Superbowl by thinking to much about being a celebrity and not enough about getting the football into the hands of a receiver. He stunk it up Sunday and we know what he is capable of.
Anybody can have an off week but the last three wks have been a little more off as time went bye.
I think thats about the time he took up with Jessica wasn't it?
Posted by Saint Jimmy @ 6:49 PM Wed, Dec 19, 2007
Tim, you've just been duped. Do you actually think TO is your friend and is giving you the straight dope? To me this is just TO screwing with the media...getting them all in a frenzy and working triple time.
As for your psychoanalysis about Jessica being a fan favorite in the lockeroom and stadium. How about this:
TO knows that Cowboys fans are a bit more crazy than other fans (ex. Blue Uni Curse) so knows that they are a bit crazy about the "Simpson Curse". And you know that in the lockeroom there's a bunch of jokes on Romo.
So basically he's telling the truth but it's an inside joke to him and his teamates.
Posted by Jeff @ 7:07 PM Wed, Dec 19, 2007
Screwing with the media or not. His point is dead on. Is everone forgetting WHO we're talking about? This isn't your girl next door or high school sweetheart we're talking about. How many other QB's in the league are dating or married to some hot chick that people wish to be with, let alone famous. How about Roy's woman? I here nothing about him or her in the media. Unlike Bimbo Simpson living it up on camera dying for that T.V. spot. How about Simpson waving at her "man" and Romo waving back to her in the box seats. Are you kidding me? That's focus??? I called this with my WIFE DURING the game BEFORE this hit the mass media waves. Low and behold, look at what it has turned into. My wife said you were right.
Posted by Heather @ 7:22 PM Wed, Dec 19, 2007
I love Tony but getting involved with a celebrity crush during a crucial time for the Cowboys was asking for trouble. Tony should have known better after what happened with Underwood. This is his career and alot of people depend on him giving 100%. He let everyone down and I can only hope that he corrects this and dumps Jessica before she destroys his career.
Jessica wasn't there to support Tony. Dang I don't even think she knew what was happening on the field. She used that day for publicity. To her it was entertainment. But to Tony it is serious because it is his job.
Dump her Tony while you have an excuse. And never look back.
Posted by jim @ 7:30 PM Wed, Dec 19, 2007
T.O. should keep his mouth shut. If he has problems with Tony and who he is dating then he should have gone directly, in private, to Tony and discussed this. You don't blab to the media. That's reckless and it is harming the team. Last thing you want is animosity between team players.
Joking or not his behavior was out of line.
Posted by David L Darden @ 7:44 PM Wed, Dec 19, 2007
What is wrong with you guys. JS was at the Green Bay game and romeo romo played just fine.
The only difference is that the NFL network didn't have enough cameras to find her.
Come on guys, get a grip.

People!!! This blog sounds like I'm back in eff'n high school. I don't care about this at all. Let's talk Carolina. We did this last week and not at all talking about Philly until we all sat back on Sunday and said WTF was that! Do not overlook Carolina. Quit talking about gossipy crap and let's breakdown Carolina's season...what might they expose in our D? Who is TO matched against? Do we need to worry about Julius Peppers? My God...quit this JS crap. Act like you're older than 16 years old.
Posted by Jeff @ 7:49 PM Wed, Dec 19, 2007
And your an idiot to even think that T.O. started it. He didn't blab to the media. He didn't go out of his way to the media. The problem is TONY ROMO's LACK OF FOCUS!!!! Get it in all your skulls. T.O.'s statement was made TODAY. The loss was on Sunday. How in the heck do you know this wasn't addressed personally? Wade Phillips made the comment, "Romo has to decide if he want's to be a 'celebrity' QB, or a Pro Football QB." Enough said. That's not T.O. That's the head coach speaking. Some of you just crack me up.
Posted by Mik @ 8:16 PM Wed, Dec 19, 2007
Of course T.O. was joking. The media is so vain. They think everyone takes them seriously and nobody would ever dare patronize them.
I listened to the audio. Maybe T.O.'s humor was too advanced for some sports writers. No, yeah, his humor was definitely too advanced for some writers.
I would be embarrassed if I was still trying to figure out if he was joking.
Posted by jackie @ 8:28 PM Wed, Dec 19, 2007
Head coach can say what he wants. T.O. is not the coach or Jerry Jones. He should have kept his trap shut and talked to Tony privately!!!
I'm with you Jim.
Posted by Jeff @ 8:47 PM Wed, Dec 19, 2007
HA! Jerry Jones is the OWNER. Thanks for that. T.O. has every right to speak to whomever whenever. Don't forget, it's the media who blew this up to a height unimaginable. Before T.O. NOT T.O.!!!!!! WTF is so hard to understand beside a bunch of T.O. haters?? If you call yourselves fans of the Dallas Cowboys, you all are a disgrace to the Star.
Posted by DougO @ 8:55 PM Wed, Dec 19, 2007
It was a joke. It sounded like a joke when I first read it. Now I'm totally convinced he was joking, and so would anyone else listening with an objective ear. TO isn't a dumb guy. The laughter in the background seems to confirm that TO's expression and body language also indicates he was joking.
Posted by kameleon_o @ 8:55 PM Wed, Dec 19, 2007
Some of you guys are nuts. Tony's acting the same way he did when he beat Green Bay, Detroit, St. Louis, Minnesota, the NY Giants twice, and the other teams we put in the win column. The guy has a bad game and now his focus is off?? Jessica Simpson was at the Green Bay game too and I don't remember him having any problems there.
If I were Tony, I'd be a little surprised and disappointed by the jerk off fans who'll cheer him during his record setting season, a season where time and again he's proven that his focus is totally on football and has literally at times taken this team on his back and willed them to a win, and then at the least sign of adversity throw him under the bus. News flash: It's not TO who is stabbing Romo in the back right now, it's so many of you fair weather fickle fans. Jeez...
Posted by DougO @ 8:58 PM Wed, Dec 19, 2007
Another take:
A man of TO's "statue" never jokes.
Posted by Terry @ 9:50 PM Wed, Dec 19, 2007
TO was joking but right on. Tony made his bed let him lie in it with or without bubble head. He's a
great QB but he's walking on a tight rope. He's got to come back on this Carolina game.
To the guy up there that said everybody wants JS.
Were you drunk when you wrote that? She's has a
sleazy image, sunken career, and is old news.
It's embarrassing that Tony wants to associate with her.

Anybody following this blog the last few years knows that the super-highway to ESPN runs through Dallas with a pit stop at T.O.'s locker. Find a controversy (or as I recommended to Tim a few weeks ago, make one up!), and hit send. Mosely doesn't write Hashmarks because his mane is so sculpted in the headshot. Nor does Easy Ed Werder pull down the big bucks because he gets his facts straight (like falsely reporting that Romo underwent an MRI). You got to follow The Weasel down that hole!

what's up with all the courtesy laughter by the media? Just like the media to chum it up with you in your face, then the second you turn around, they slit your throat.
My thing is this, we all know athletes have to watch what they say. But this doesn't mean that they can't joke around. If they don't joke around then the media is all over it saying that he's got the personality of a rock and so forth. What if T.O. and Tony have that type of relationship where they can kid around, joke around. Obviously as you can see, that is not portrayed in this here blog.
The media, just like athletes have to watch what they say and write. The media needs to realize that they are the meeting point between the athelete and the public. I understand what an objective point of view is, however the original blog post of the whole Simpson / T.O. was not an objective point of view, it was an accusation, mudslinging. As much as an athlete has to be responsible for what they say, the media equally has to be responsible for what they say or publish on the internet or newspaper because the media are the one's that give us our impression of the athletes that we watch. They greatly effect the point of view that the public has of an athelete, due to that most likely a lot of us do not know these atheletes on a personal level, so we rely on them (media) to give us that point of view. The media has to take some responsibility as well for issues like these. It's ridiculous.

When I first read it yesterday, I thought it sounded like he was joking and the DMN was stirring the flames to sell papers. When I read the transcript with Tabloid Timmy's questions and responses (absent from the flame-fanning initial story because they put the conversation in context and had a dousing effect)my first thoughts were confirmed. The news media is a really creepy bunch. The medium is the message. You should be ashamed, but you aren't which is even worse. TO should have known better, but you guys are scum-sucking bottom feeders.

Are you sure it isn't springtime? Love is in the air? Hell no! There's money to be made, there's media spin to be spun. Oh what joyous times in the NFL in December! And to think, if the 'Boys had won the game there wouldn't be any story. So let me get this straight, if the Cowboys don't make it to the super bowl it's Jessica Simpson's fault? She must be a witch, pile up that wood, strike up that match, here come the Dark Ages all over again. You guys are worse than Yankee fans!
