Williams' effect

9:20 AM Tue, Dec 18, 2007 |
Todd Archer   E-mail   News tips

Roy Williams will appeal his one-game suspension, and I expect the league to uphold its decision. So where does that leave the Cowboys for Saturday?

Williams' absence creates a big domino effect on the defense and special teams, especially with fellow safety Pat Watkins not expected to play because of an ankle injury.

Keith Davis should start at strong safety, which could affect his special teams' play. Rookie Courtney Brown moves up a spot in the rotation and maybe Nate Jones gets a look at safety as well.

What happens on the substitute defensive packages when Williams effectively moved to linebacker? Does Bradie James stay on the field now? Or, gasp, could we see Bobby Carpenter play Williams' role? Carpenter has speed and athleticism and isn't bad in coverage.

The good news is the offense the Cowboys are playing. Aside from Steve Smith, the Panthers do not have a ton of down-the-field weapons, and they could have Matt Moore making the second start of his career.

Why bother appeal the suspension. It is pretty clear that he horse collar-tackled McNabb and the bottom line is that the important thing is that he is around for the playoff game.

Posted by Patrick @ 9:40 AM Tue, Dec 18, 2007

If he's suspended then he's not allowed to even practice with the team, so he is appealing to buy a couple of extra practice days.

I'm sure the nfl will rule very quickly on this.

Feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

Posted by ap @ 9:41 AM Tue, Dec 18, 2007

Was there any news on Ken Hamlin's collossal hit on the Eagle tight end?

Posted by 666 @ 9:41 AM Tue, Dec 18, 2007

The cowboys should appeal the high first round draft choice they used for this guy.

Posted by dave in austin @ 9:43 AM Tue, Dec 18, 2007

Parcells saw in lot in Keith Davis. He's a good hitter, and can't be worse in coverage. Remember when the Saints tried to sign Davis away? And the cowboys kept him? What if he has an outstanding game? Could we see a change in the backfield? I was a Roy Williams fan, it just seems he's regressing every year.

Posted by Curtis Jr. @ 9:45 AM Tue, Dec 18, 2007

The offense better come out and firing and executing...

If this is anything like what the Seahawks did vs the Panthers, we could be end for another long day...

Posted by WilliamC @ 9:47 AM Tue, Dec 18, 2007

This would indeed be an excellent time to get Bobby Carpenter involved in Roy's "linebacker" responsibilities.

Little doubt in my mind he would be an upgrade, but then, so would my grandmother.

Posted by ed @ 9:47 AM Tue, Dec 18, 2007

Who is this Bobby Carpenter you speak of? Practice Squad jobber, free agent pickup, late training season cut?

Posted by L.J. @ 9:53 AM Tue, Dec 18, 2007

It is evident that Williams tries hard, but it is also apparent that he is only average. Jerry may need to draft/sign someone in the off-season, and cut his $ losses.

Posted by JV @ 9:53 AM Tue, Dec 18, 2007

Matt Moore is going to have the game of his life against the Cowboys. I said it here first.

Posted by Khan @ 9:55 AM Tue, Dec 18, 2007

COYBOYS SHOULD APPEAL WHY THE NFL SUSPENDED HIM FOR ONLY GAMES IT SHOULD BE ATLEAST FOR 6 GAMES HE SHOULD BE SUSPENDED FOR . SORRY ASS.

Posted by PaulC @ 9:58 AM Tue, Dec 18, 2007

I wish the NFL had suspended Roy for the next 10 seasons. Get this guy out of here. A wasted draft choice.

Posted by LL from Austin @ 9:59 AM Tue, Dec 18, 2007

Ok, you're wrong Patrick...he is/would be just suspended from the game not the facility...it is different from the drug/criminal conduct suspensions where they are barred from the facilities...

Posted by 666 @ 9:59 AM Tue, Dec 18, 2007

Does it bother anyone else that Wade acts like he is out in left field at times when it comes to injuries(didn't know Tony hurt his thumb), game rules(used a challenge for he 2nd time this year on a pass obviously dropped when the receiver hit the ground), etc.

At times he appears to be on top of things and at other times he appears to be no where close, like saying in his press conference yesterday that he thought Roy Williams got a warning from the league about "helmet to helmet" contact, not horsecollar.

Will the will Wade Phillips please stand up!

Posted by Josh Clanton @ 10:02 AM Tue, Dec 18, 2007

Tackle is defined (a. To stop (an opponent carrying the ball), especially by forcing the opponent to the ground.) In todays day and age, i think the fluffing up of the players is ridiculous, they get paid millions of dollars to play a sport they love. They dont need oxygen on the sidelines, heaters on the sidelines, and they definately dont need a horsecollar rule. If you dont want to get horsecolorred, DONT GET CAUGHT. It's that plain and simple, rules now days are getting ridiculous, i feel he should get the suspension JUST because of the fact that he has done it multiple times even though he knows its his fault we have the rule. Yet, I feel get rid OF THE HEATERS, OXYGEN, and all this fluffing up of players.

We should of never cut Matt Moore i saw it in the preseason and at training camp, the guy has good feet under him, good throwing arm, and good accuracy, we will have our hands full come sat. night.

Posted by tonytee @ 10:06 AM Tue, Dec 18, 2007

Doesn't bother me at all about Wade not giving the full details on injuries. Patriots have had Brady on the injury report for four seasons with a shoulder injury, and they never get in-depth about injuries. Nor should we as much as the fans want it.

If I'm the Cowboys, I start tightening up things all over the place and quit responding to questions about Parcells, NFC Championship games, etc. I'm so tired of reading how it's a lock the championship game is here in Dallas. So much can happen in the next 4-5 weeks. Quit losing focus beyond the next game.

Posted by Josh Clanton @ 10:06 AM Tue, Dec 18, 2007

No LL from Austin, upon appeal, if he get's denied, he will be barred from facilities, training and the game until suspension is up.

PAULC and KHAN, stfu, you guys make no sense and have no idea what your talking about. Go jump on the bandwagon of the patriots, and when Roy Williams intercepts a pass in the Super Bowl and scores on tom brady, then say, wow i put my foot in my mouth like an F'n idiot.

Posted by 666 @ 10:07 AM Tue, Dec 18, 2007

Josh, you are so right on Matt Moore.

I know a lot of fans don't like this comparison, but you really saw a lot of Tony Romo in this guy.
What a great developmental QB he would have made understudying Romo. By 2008 we would have had a guy who could step in and run the offense without lot of offensive adjustments necessary if Romo went down.

ON A LIGHTER NOTE: THE BOYS SHOULD GAIN A LOT OF RESPECT AND CONFIDENCE WHEN TODAY'S PRO-BOWL ROSTER IS ANNOUNCED, EVEN WITH THE NEGATIVE COWBOY BIAS AMONG THE PLAYERS AND COACHES VOTING.

Posted by PaulC @ 10:10 AM Tue, Dec 18, 2007

As an aside, all this business with the horsecollar does prove how soft the NFL has become and how EASY it is for receivers and qbs to pile up stats. Reinstall the horsecollar tackle. But also reinstall the legality of any hit on the receivers--even if the poor dears are "vulnerable". Hey, if they're "vulnerable", then only the brave and sturdy will get catches that are now given away like prizes in a box of crackerjacks. Also allow DBs to bump and hit receivers all over the field until the ball is thrown--just like they used to do in the 1970s. Watch the Brady babies cry as their QB ratings sink to the 70s. But it would be real football, instead of glorified frisbee.

Posted by Bluestar @ 10:13 AM Tue, Dec 18, 2007

If Roy Williams can run you down from behind, you should be horse collared. Roy is a great player and the suspension and rule is dumb. Only regret is he should have made the suspension worthwile and landed on the back of McNabb's legs.

Posted by PaulC @ 10:25 AM Tue, Dec 18, 2007

The question is: how do we unload Roy and his huge contract on somebody dumb enough to take him? Maybe Miami? They need a defensive "name". Roy certainly has a "name". Take anything they offer. Roy for the rights to Dan Marino. Heck, Roy for the rights to Bob Griese.

Posted by Chris/Denton @ 10:43 AM Tue, Dec 18, 2007

I think I'm losing IQ points just reading some of these comments.

What difference does it make "IF" Matt Moore turns out to be a good QB in the league? The Cowboys DO have a Pro bowl QB on the roster for the first time since Aikman left so WHO cares. Would it be nice to have a backup on the roster that you could count on to win games if Romo went down? Yes, but after all the years this team has gone with questions at QB I for one am happy to have the guy we have. Matt Moore has won ONE game, Romo has made two Pro bowls and is shattering team records.

Keith Davis was playing FS last year and didn't have a guy like Hamlin back there with him making sure they had the right call on and that people were lined up right. I think he'll have more success this time around and the guy does make plays. I'm also looking forward to seeing more of Courtney Brown at safety. The guy is a converted CB so he should have better coverage skills and he's one of those guys that always seems to be around the ball. Keep an eye on him Sunday.

I really do hope Carpenter comes in on nickel packages to play the other LB spot. He's better in coverage that James and Ayodele (not saying much) and showed some flashes last year especially in the Seahawks game of being able to get to the QB on blitzes. I think it's time to get this guy on the field and see exactly WHAT he has and doesn't have and make a decision accordingly in the offseason.

Posted by Lee @ 10:55 AM Tue, Dec 18, 2007

Williams... Fool!!! I just dont understand why we have kept this guy other than the salary hit we would take. I wish they would have thrown him out for 4 games to include the playoffs... One or two good licks does not earn your keep!

Posted by Brandon B @ 11:02 AM Tue, Dec 18, 2007

PaulC, why would anyone want the guy? Even if the Cowboys traded Roy, his signing bonus would be accelerated.

By my calculations, Roy signed a 4 year contract extension running from this year through the 2010 season. He received approximately $25 million per year with $11.1 million in guaranteed money. I'm not sure that is a true signing bonus, but I will assume it is and that the contract extension basically became a 5 year contract (several sources report it as a 5 year contract). The pro-rated bonus has a salary cap hit of $2.22 million per year. With last year and this year already in the books, he has $6.66 million left. So, if the Cowboys were to cut him after the magical date that allows them to divide the remaining signing bonus over the 2008 and 2009 seasons, the Cowboys are looking at a $3.33 million per year hit over the next 2 seasons. Compare that with Roy's approximate $5 million per season hit for salary and bonus, and the Cowboys could reduce the salary cap hit by $1.67 million per season. Feel free to correct my math if anyone knows it is wrong.

Regardless, it's time to cut the guy. He has become just a player. Even before his suspension, the Cowboys were going to put Courtney Brown in the game in passing situations if Watkins can't go. What does that tell you about how the Cowboys feel about Roy? Not many real Pro Bowlers that lose time to spares.

IMHO, the Cowboys should cut Roy, re-sign Hamlin, move Henry to FS, and sign Trufant. Now that would be a shutdown secondary.

Posted by WilliamC @ 11:15 AM Tue, Dec 18, 2007

Brandon B,

the other way of looking at your stats however,
is for 1.67 million a season over what it would cost to cut him, you could at least have a backup strong safety who could play in case of injuries, IF the coaches would use him as a backup.

Problem is, the cowboys are apparently going to play this guy a lot injuries not withstanding.

Kinda like Julius Jones. I guess the only way we are going to get either of these guys off the field is for them to be gone, because the coaches are never going to bench either one apparently.

Posted by Khan @ 11:18 AM Tue, Dec 18, 2007

HEY Josh Clanton STUPID ASS , YOU HAVE NO FCKN KNOWLEDGE ABOUT FOOTBALL . STOP DAY DREAMING ,THIS SITE IS ONLY COWBOYS FAN , YOU FUCKN PATRIOTS FAN GET THE F OUT A HERE ...

Posted by Jeff L. @ 11:35 AM Tue, Dec 18, 2007

Sad times in Cowboys land. One week it's nothing but 'bring on the Patriots' and 'Superbowl', and the next week it's 'we're going to have our hands full with Matt Moore.'

That didn't take long.

Posted by Brian @ 11:53 AM Tue, Dec 18, 2007

Ya'll need to go to the real Cowboys website... www.dallascowboys.com. Get your facts straight.

Posted by Chris/Denton @ 12:10 PM Tue, Dec 18, 2007

Brian, I'm pretty sure that most diehard Cowboys fans go to several sites to read up on their favorite team and get different perspectives (I do) but think this site has the best overall especially with the addition of Albert Breer and the way he breaks down the game on both sides of the ball. Take your spam elsewhere.

Posted by 666 @ 12:33 PM Tue, Dec 18, 2007

Brian,
Agree with Chris in Denton,
DallasCowboys.com is the official cowboy site,
but you will always find breaking news on this blog before you ever see it on that site.

plus, all the writers on that site are being paid by the Dallas Cowboys. You figure it out.

Posted by Brian @ 1:11 PM Tue, Dec 18, 2007

This blog is nothing but GM's from their couches maiking all of these trades, cuts, etc. It's sucked ever since Matt Mosley went to ESPN.

Posted by Brian @ 1:18 PM Tue, Dec 18, 2007

Also, Denton sucks too (UNT Alumni) Mean Green baby. Only thing good about it is the Fry St. Fair.

Posted by Phylo @ 2:22 PM Tue, Dec 18, 2007

Roy Williams out for a game? You mean the Cowboys might get some deep middle coverage? WooHoo!!!
