Calvin Watkins reports that multiple sources said the Cowboys have offered Dom Capers a job as the defensive coordinator or a defensive consultant. Considering the fact that the Cowboys already have a defensive coordinator, it's sort of a sticky situation. If Capers takes the coordinator post it would leave Brian Stewart, the current defensive coordinator, in limbo. Stewart is the only assistant on the staff who worked under Wade Phillips before arriving at Valley Ranch. Capers was Jason Garrett's choice to be his defensive coordinator if Garrett became the head coach in Baltimore or Atlanta. Feel free to jump to conclusions about what Jerry's up to here. |

This is turning into a real donnybrook. Can you win with six head coaches? Everyone running to Jerry with his game plan. Players looking for some sense of leadership from which coach or the GM? The head coach has to have the authority and make all game and player decisions. Any doubt, who is making the game decisions in NY and NE? I have seen this behaviour from Jerry in the past. It will get very ugly next year.

The upheaval continues; it sounds like WP may not make it past February at this rate. Cannot see how he sticks around with Jerry over riding his asst. coaching wishes and simply humiliating Stewart. The fact that Capers called Stewart ahead of time demonstrates that he is a quality individual.
If Mosely was accurate with the offensive line scoop re the KC coach, Phillips may not be around long.
I am sure that some of veteran defensive players will not be happy if WP and BStewart end up resigning if Capers does come on board.
JerryWorld is sure interesting right around now. The AL Davis comparisons are becoming eerily visionary.
Jerry must be convinced that the level of talent on his club is so superior that it will overcome all of the conflict he has created with the coaching staff. Not sure that having just two ALL-NFL players is that dominant a position; it must be a circus @ The Ranch!!
The pressure will be palpable come September '08 to win immediately, never an ideal position for any team to be under!

Nothing is goin on.... this is called sensationalism, this is not valid. Jerry wouldn't disrespect his staff like this, but I can't wait til' ESPN does a piece on this... They'll put their very best T.O.-spin spin on it.

It is very sad when Cowboys fans love Jerry Jones more than they love the Cowboys.
Nothing is goin on.... this is called sensationalism
It is going on. It has gone on, and it will continue to go on. Since Jerry Jones bought the
Cowboys his meddling has yet to be a constant winner. He has success when he hires a good coach and stays the hell away.

I like Dom Capers coming in. I don't like HOW he is being brought in. If you feel like Wade or Brian Stewart are not doing a good job, then say so and demote them or fire them. At this point, just fire Wade and make Garrett the Head Coach.
Like an earlier poster said, the teams in the Super Bowl have clear cut Head Coaches in charge. Heck, Tom Coughlin was on the verge of being fired earlier, but his GM or owner never interfered with what he did. They let him sink or swim on his own and look what he has done with that roster.
Posted by Don @ 5:18 AM Thu, Jan 31, 2008
I know Jerry wants to have a staff ready for Garrett, but Wade should be allowed to pick his own staff. Wade seems like he is just on the staff and Garrett is the real coach. I don't think the way Jerry is handling things is fair to Wade or Stewart.
Posted by DCFanatic @ 5:55 AM Thu, Jan 31, 2008
Now tell me Jerry ain't running the show without giving two ****s what Wade wants..
This kid Stewart came here as Wade's hand picked disciple, but he did not blow anyone out of the water as the D coordinator last season.
Now I thought Stewart would still be here as the D cor as long as Wade was around, but this makes a whole lot more sense than Capers coming in as the LB coach. Capers is just too big of an 'NFL player'. Why would Stewart want to be the D Cor and have Wade running things while Capers is #2 as a consultant?
I hope he just takes the D cor job because I beleive he can get more out of the defense. But then again it makes you wonder about Capers having to answer to Wade who was really the 'defensive mastermind' for this team anyway. Garrett runs the O, Capers runs the D and Wade helps out around the house?
Jerry sure is creating a volatile situation out at the Ranch these days. IMO, it's looking more and more like he is doing all he can to create a situation where Wade can quit ASAP and Jerry can't get blamed for firing him.
If I am Wade right now I feel like an overnight security guard when I used to be the sherriff.
Not to say it can't work next season, but man if it starts off bad things will get seriously ugly for poor Wade in a New York minute.
Never a dull moment in Cowboys Nation, never ever ever ever is there a dull moment with this team.

Man how many FORMER Houston Texans coaches can you get on ONE staff, I tell you Dallas must be thinking Houston knows something Jerry don't. Hey just keep up the good work Jerry, it will be another 12 years before you see another Super Bowl (with exception of the ONE you hosting in 2011).

I guess it's a little early for all the "jerry knows best bloggers." This is all nuts, and - if you think this team can win with all the craziness - you'd have to be out of it too. This team isn't the dynasty that Switzer inherited, but it's falling apart at the seams in much the same way (only coaches rather than players). Hey, it's only been 2-3 weeks. We still have a lot of off season.

As I've said for years, as long as skeletor owns and runs this team, they will never reach or win a championship. He is a disaster.
Instead of being a man and firing WP, he's making it so miserable for the man that he'll resign before Feb. is out. How low.

Bottom line is that the Cowboys defense played well this past season and I felt it improved from Parcells' last season. However, I still saw plenty of vulnerability and giving up the big play. Stewart was San diego's DB coach before he came here. Capers is an expert in the 3-4. We need to WIN now. We need to win a playoff game. Brian Stewart is not the answer as the D Coordinator. Capers is.
Posted by AikBachEdith @ 6:57 AM Thu, Jan 31, 2008
Bottom line here is that the Cowboys underachieved and the responsibility for that falls on the head coach. How it is that Wade Phillips still has a job in Dallas is beyond me. He should have been fired the day after the loss to the Giants. The Cowboys should be in the Super Bowl this weekend, not the Giants. Wade Phillips is a failure. He should be gone by now. Jerry doesn't have to show him any respect because he doesn't command any because he failed. Pure and simple.

I love how you guys sit around and bash Jerry for everything. The vast majority of fans bash their team's owner or gm unless we are talking about the Colts, Patriots or Packers. If a team doesnt win the SB every year then the owner or GM gets bashed. Why dont you guys get a life or another team to cheer for. Im proud to be a Cowboys fan and whatever Jerry wants to do with the Cowboys is fine with me...ITS HIS MONEY! Christ- you guys are pathetic!
Posted by Giants Suck @ 7:01 AM Thu, Jan 31, 2008
AikBachEdith- I agree 100%. How in the world is an up and down 10-6 team who lucked their way to 3 playoff wins with that goofball QB in the flippin' Super Bowl. We're home scratching our heads and Big mouth Burress is flapping his gums. I can't wait to play them next year.

i think the best thing to do is what is being done...Jasn Garrett, JOhn Garrett, Hudson Houck and Wade Wilson run the offense...Let Dom Capers be the defensive coordinator, Dave Campo run the secondary and Grantham run the defensive line and Stewart run the Lbs, cause he sure doesn't know how to gameplan or make adjustments....Wade Phillips couldn't even guide the NFCs best team to a playoff win at home. All he could do is talk about how good they were and they shouldn't have lost...Heck it might be beter to fire Wade Phillips now and hand the job over to Garrett

What a friggin mess Jerry Jones has created.
He just cannot be satisfied without screwing something up.
He messed things up on his coaching staff by not tying up his coaches during the middle of the season when they would have signed new contracts before Parcells got to them.
Now he's having to make addations that make no sense.
Where do the Cowboy's go from here?

Per Ian, "Wade Phillips brought this on himself". I have to agree. There was no excuse for that loss and the buck must stop with WP and with Stewart by extension.
I don't have a problem with Jerry trying to improve the coaching staff. There has to be accountability. I hope Capers joins the Boys and as DC. Stewart was not ready for DC job in my opinion.
Posted by rhdj @ 8:34 AM Thu, Jan 31, 2008
If stewart were a team player, he would not mind Capers on staff. Capers can improve this defense, and I think should be on staff. I would put The team first. You can blame Jerry all you want, the bottom line is Capers is a good hire and will make for a killer Defense that maybe will not give up points a critical times. (right before halftime!)The Defense did improve but by no means was great, it can improve and will if Capers comes on board. Put aside your hate for Jerry and you will see this is a good move.

I have a hypothetical question. If a team finds a player, say a Tackle, who is demonstrably better than the current player playing tackle, does the team decline to bring that player in, saying, "Geez, it just wouldn't be fair to the current player."? I don't think so. If you have a chance to bring in a better player, you do it, everytime. If you don't, you aren't being very smart. Why then is it different with coaches? If you have the chance to bring in a coach who is demonstrably better (which I believe Capers is demonstrably better than Stewart - and nothing against Stewart) and it would improve your team, why is there all this angst about it?
Posted by Dallas Fan @ 8:40 AM Thu, Jan 31, 2008
"In 1991, when Capers was defensive coordinator with New Orleans, the Saints finished second in the NFL in pass defense. As the defensive coordinator for Pittsburgh, Capers led a defense that finished No. 1 against the run in 1994."
Works for me. I say hire the guy now. Fire Stewart. Someone has to be held accountable for the many 3rd downs where the Defense couldn't stop a toddler from making a first down. It happened way to often. The buck stops at the DC period.
Posted by K Sizzle @ 8:41 AM Thu, Jan 31, 2008
Fire brian Stewart. Jerry had no confidence in this guy since last training camp when Steward had the D Lineman running sprints. Stewart sucks.

Posted by Todd @ 9:16 AM Thu, Jan 31, 2008
I think some people on this blog miss the point. Hiring Capers would be a good move, but the team has no direction of leadership. The Head Coach is suppouse to be the chief, but Jerry has too many chiefs. Wade is not a strong leader, so Jones is running all over him hiring who he wants to hire after he said Wade could hire his own guys. Now if he wants Phillips gone then he should just fire the guy.The Cowboys lack leadership at the Head Coach spot, this is a young team and they need leadership. Too many cooks spoil the soup.
Posted by texican @ 9:22 AM Thu, Jan 31, 2008
Stewart looks uncomfortable trying to explain opponents defensive tendancies to a lone cameraman during a 20 second segment of the coaches show. I'm amazed he can even communicate effectively with people. Or can he? Is that why they are looking elsewhere for expertise?
Posted by Izzy @ 9:35 AM Thu, Jan 31, 2008
Maybe Jerry is doing Garrett's dirty work for him? Everyone knows in 12 months Garrett is the HC and Wade is gone. This way it doesn't look like Garrett is usurping Wade's authority while at the same time Wade gets to keep his title and have one more year to remove the "choker" stigma attached to his name.
I dunno...to me this is more about Garrett going around Wade than about Jerry meddling. Maybe JJ's got me completely fooled (and Garrett is an innocent bystander), but that's how I see it.

Brian Stewart's defense left A LOT to be desired... I'm all for this.
Posted by jerryblowsasgm @ 9:49 AM Thu, Jan 31, 2008
I think Garrett has nothing to do with this. This team will win 6 games next season. Jerry is a loon and he continues meddle. This team has so much potential if they use their first 2 picks the way they should. However Jerry blows as gm.
Posted by GP @ 9:57 AM Thu, Jan 31, 2008
Why are you all shocked that Jerry is just being Jerry? He has done things his way ever since he signed the check and gave it to Bright and got the keys. He has always been and always will be Jerry. Aint no changing him now.

Mr. Jones is obviously very upset about losing to the Giants and thinks the Cowboys should be in the Super Bowl - therefore he believes an upgrade in coaching is needed. Too many pro bowlers to end up here is probably on his mind. It's common sense.
Thus, the squeeze begins on the coaching staff to raise their guidance. Players should be next. I would take a look at our inside linebackers, 3rd corner and a safety who can run.
On offense, if affordable - sign Flo, sign Barber, stay healthy and get a fast 2nd receiver and new running back.
Posted by 5rings @ 10:03 AM Thu, Jan 31, 2008
Bill, you are one of the few who 'get it'.
Why so many of you let the media influence you is beyond me. I guess it is just much easier to find the negative in anything.
I love all this talk about "no leadership" and "soft coaching staff". How did the dictatorship of Parcells work out...? Don't think there was any doubt about his strong leadership.
The Cowboys are looking to upgrade the team anyway they can. You wouldn't cry about an upgrade with a player so why a coach? So what if Jerry is building this team for the future. How is that a bad thing?
I've said it before and I'll say it again. Wade is given a legitimate shot at a superbowl in 08 and the Cowboys are built for the future. I would love to have Capers on staff to take over the defense when Garrett takes the reins.
Sounds like a win win to me...
Posted by A-Cast @ 10:26 AM Thu, Jan 31, 2008
To DJH
You mention that Jerry should of tied up Parcell's guys to not be in this mess. Can you believe the mess it would of been had Jerry tried to secure them and they declined it because they had future plans with Parcells. You know Tuna and his former staff were in contact during the season. I'm sure he express interest in returning soon. If the current staff were forced to turn down offers for possible future deals with Parcells, it would of become a media circus again and really distracted the rest of the season. I'm sure does guys didn't want to stay around anyway.
Posted by Jody @ 11:46 AM Thu, Jan 31, 2008
If Capers comes to Dallas and Stewart is uncomfortable, too bad. Suck it up and do a better job. Be the leader of the defense, come up with better game plans, insist on better performance from your players. Capers and Campo have had their shot at HC, they should be happy to be a part of a good staff. If Stewart had coached up a top 5 defense, he would not be uncomfortable or feeling any pressure.
Posted by MWM @ 11:56 AM Thu, Jan 31, 2008
In my opinion Wade Phillips will resign soon after the SuperBowl. Capers will become DC and JG will be head coach. Only question I have is who is OC since Cam Cameron is no longer available which is who JG wanted as his OC if he took the Balt. job.
Posted by texicanstar @ 12:18 PM Thu, Jan 31, 2008
If I were Jerry and company having just tried to get Capers on the staff and then heard that Stewart told Capers he would be uncomfortable with him joining the staff...if it were me, Stewart would be GONE.
That would be tantamount to insurrection from Stewart to undo what Jerry/Wade were trying to do in getting Capers.
Yeah, Stewart's butt would be gone out the door in a NY minute.

Kind of funny how ignorant most fans are:
1) Last year we blew it because our Defense stunk in December but yet Parcells was run out of town because he had a boring Offense that scored 26PPG.
2) This year we blew it because our Offense stunk in December but yet we are running Wade / Stewart out of town because we had vulnerabiltieis on Defense.
3) Last year Sparano and his 26PPG was not good enough and he was demoted. Garrett brought in as his boss.
4) This year Garrett blew it but he gets a raise, promotion and hand picks his staff for Jerry World 2010.
Can someone makes any sense of this level of retardation in ownership and the fans?
Jerry Jones is nothing more than a pimp who dug up oil.
PS, the guy who should have been fired was Garrett for the pathetic O he 100% controlled in December and January but with JJ in charge everything works backwards. But no matter how stupid Jerry is, his kids say "HE WANTS TO WIN!" .... um yeah, all 32 owners want to win.
Posted by ed @ 1:21 PM Thu, Jan 31, 2008
"Now, how do you think that made Cowboys defensive coordinator Brian Stewart feel?" asks Jean-Jacques Taylor in reply of the possibility of Capers joining the defensive coaching crew.
Are you serious, Taylor?
Apparently the writing staff thinks staffing decisions should be based on personal feelings rather than a drive to improve and see results. Perhaps a better question would be "Now, how do you think the Cowboy faithful felt when the defense allowed a game-tying touchdown to the Giants with 47 ticks left in the half of the divisional playoff game?" No one is suggesting that Stewart is to blame for the Cowboy's playoff loss, but certainly adding a veteran like Capers to the staff and shoring up a leaky 3-4 defense is a top priority if a championship is the ultimate goal.

Next year we will have a few mutations of former NFL teams:
1. The South Florida Dolphins: major rebuilding job, but clear direction and leadership; forecast calls for short term turbulence but long term sunshine (SB in 2011, where is that game scheduled at?).
2. The Dallas Raiders: Owner running amock when left to his own devices; incompetent GM imploding his heirarchy by conducting freakish lab experiments wiht his coaching staff; forecast calls for cloudy skies with scattered sunshine short term, Katrina-like weather right around the corner.
3. The Oakland Deadheads: Senile and confused owner looking to fire last year's Kid Wonderkind because Kid is trying to WIN despite the Genius GM; forecast calls for more of the same until divine intervention calls for the ultimate end for the Head of The Family; major rainstorms coupled with devastating earthquakes ahead."There is No Sunhine till he's Gone............."

I don't get all this second guessing! At the beginning of year, we all were hoping (at least I was) for something better than our finish last year...10-6, 11-5 seemed impossible. We had filled in some holes but were hurting in other places. Then we suprise EVERYONE and finish 13-3 and lose to the eventual SB champ, so the Giants must have some reason to have beat us. I am disappointed like everyone else, but it is a sport and catching that lightening in a bottle is so fleeting...just ask the Patriots. I've coached some at the lower levels. I've won it all and I've lost unexpectedly and I've always told my players that winning week in and week out during the regular season is one success to be proud of and winning in the playoff rounds is another success, but shouldn't take away from what you accomplished for the regular season. Improving the coaching with so many coaches that have head coaching experience and know what it takes to win at the next level coupled with a strong draft/free agency run seems like a good thing to me. I'm excited about next year and very much enjoyed the ride this year. All of the owners in pro sports, to me, are just rich guys playing with the toy they bought. I can't control then by 'bitching' on a blog, so I don't even frustrate myself and try. 13-3 beat 9-7 or 10-6 and I enjoyed the season very much. But then...you can't please everyone.
