Cowboys Awards: Comeback Player of Year

Albert Breer   E-mail   News tips

Today, we start a seven-part awards series, looking back at the Cowboys' '07 season. And to kick things off, here's our Comeback Player of the Year (a real shocker):

OLB GREG ELLIS

If you win the league award, you should win the team award, and Ellis is a runaway winner here. After all he went through, it really is something else to consider that this guy, in his 10th year in the league, was able to post 12.5 sacks and prove himself a very solid three-down player on the edge of the strong-side. And that was in 13 games, 10 of which he started.

To review: He started out blew out his Achilles in Arizona last fall, last all of one practice in training camp, and questioned his ability to come back throughout. He wound up having arguably the best year of his career.

Last week, Ellis expressed concern that he’ll be phased out of the starting lineup, with rookie Anthony Spencer breathing down his neck. Considering the potential Spencer flashed this year, that’s valid. But there’s little question there’s a spot on this team for Ellis if he wants it, and that he’s still capable of being an impact player.

RUNNERS UP

WR Terry Glenn: Yes, I know, his contributions were minor in the grand scheme of things. But to come back from two knee surgeries and play the way he did counts for something. If nothing else, Glenn showed tremendous determination in returning.

S Ken Hamlin: He missed most of 2005 after a nightclub incident left him with head injuries, then was moved out of Seattle before signing a one-year deal with the Cowboys. And all he did was make the Pro Bowl in 2006.

Hey Albert,
I've really been enjoying your work on the blog. Another category you should do is Most Disappointing Player. I've definitely got my thoughts - would like to hear yours.

Hey, waitaminute -- I don't see the Biggest Whiff Artist & Poorest In Coverage While Chowing Down On Biscuits & Gravy And Refusing To Get A Vision Exam Award anywhere on the schedule.

You're gonna slot that one in for January 28th, right Albert?

MDP? Row Willy Anyone? I know it's all the rave to be bashing Roy, but can someone name me another "Pro Bowler" (not including Pete Weber) that teams feel they can regularly take advantage of? The guy has lost it.

Posted by elliot @ 11:13 AM Mon, Jan 21, 2008

That should be Roy Willy.

what are we givin awards for, the Giants the 10-6 giants went to the Super Bowl after we beat em twice and the third time we lost at home, we should be in the Super Bowl!

Ah, the rewards keep coming in. What a wonderful time of year it is. They are my comeback players, yes. Oh, I remember in my fourth year, he'd spend time with me, reading by the fire. We'd dream of adventures and exciting times ahead. So much love, so much testoserone! Alas, they will always be with you, as it is not your abilities that makes us the same, but it is our choices.

Can someone remind the Harry Potter character that he died in the 6th book! Tell him to join another blog.

Ellis did play exceptionally well, considering the injury to his foot. Do you think he will be back next year? Spencer seemed to play well intermittenly during the season, so may push Ellis for the starting role next season

How about Biggest Threat To Stretch The Defense Of A Box Of Krispy Kreme's-Wayne Phillips.

Most Likely To Wind Up On A Poster Of Santana Moss While Trailing 20 Yards Behind The Ball-Roy Williams.

Most Likely To Engage In A Horse Collar Tackler-Kent Hamlin.

Most Invisible While Starting-Marcus Spears.

Player Most Likely To Inspire Hatred While Watching Antonio Cromartie Make Another Play-Bobby Carpenter.

I like Terry Glenn too, but the only reason you picked him as your runner up Breer is 'cause he went to Ohio St. and he played for the Patriots. Admit it you chowder head!!! LOL

Biggest choke player? Fall guy of the year? Team least prepared to play a home playoff game? Coach who said 13-3 the most times this year? Most overrared OC of the year?

Posted by Tim Burns @ 12:27 PM Mon, Jan 21, 2008

Worst Fans in the Free World?

Posted by COWBOY @ 12:29 PM Mon, Jan 21, 2008

Biggest Choker...Tony Choko Romo
Biggest jerk owner....jerkoff jones
Most nutless....Jason Garrett

I'd actually vote for Lendord Davis as runner-up to Ellis in this category. He just needed the right situation to start realizing his potential. Hopefully he'll be more confortable and dominating in 2008.

I'm with you Tim Burns. These "fans" don't realize how far this team has come. They don't remember the lean years. The salary cap hell years, the qb carousel years. I am as disappointed as any fan that we weren't playing yesterday. I just kept saying to myself this should be our boys. But oh well what is done is done, but I am not gonna sit here and bash a bunch of athletes who IMHO gave it their all. Some things didn't go their way and they lost. Its a game and somebody is gonna win and somebody is gonna lose! Most people who bash and call the Cowboy player names probably just jumped on the bandwagon and were talking sh*t at work or school or something not really knowing what they were talking about. Then things went bad and they look like idiots for talking trash and now wanna bash all the players and jump off the wagon. I say jump off..... that is probably the reason for the december struggles, bandwagon getting too heavy. I say get off and stay off don't come back ever. Just root for whoever the media says is the best team every year.

To Jeremy, you actually got to the 6th book?

I agree 100% with you Eddie.

Most Improved: jay Ratliff
Rookie of the Year: Anthony Spencer
Special Teams Player: Nick Folk
Defensive Player: DeMarcus Ware
Offensive Player: Terrell Owens/Jason Witten
MVP: Tony Romo

What did Terry Glenn contribute other than high team medical bills? He was a non-factor in one hugely disappointing game.
