Cowboys Awards: Defensive Player of Year

Fifth in a seven-part series ...

OLB DeMARCUS WARE

With all due respect to the rest of the defense, this was an absolute slam dunk. Ware is one of the top 10 players in the game, regardless of position, and should be All-Pro for years to come.

The 14 sacks are just the beginning. How about 27 quarterback pressures? Or eight tackles for losses? Or 80 tackles at a position that doesn’t pile up that statistic, and the fact that teams are constantly running away from him? Or the jump he gets off the ball in long-yardage that makes him darn near unblockable?

There’s no doubt about this one. Ware’s excellence goes beyond his own production. Because of the attention he demands from an offense, it trickles down in other players’ production, and affects the entire game. He’s got two years left on his rookie deal, but the Cowboys might as well go ahead and just break the bank right now.

RUNNERS-UP

OLB Greg Ellis: In a 3-4 defense, the outside linebackers, who become rush ends in passing situations, are usually going to be the ones with the sacks. But as is the case with Ware, Ellis displayed a level of consistency this year that made it difficult for teams to go outside in the running game, and brought consistent heat (12.5 sacks) alike. He’s not Ware, but few are.

CB Terence Newman: Even after missing three games, like Ellis did, Newman proved most valuable to a secondary that had its troubles, both on the outside in the base and in the slot in sub packages. He tied for the team high with 15 passes defensed and had four picks, even when most teams threw away from him. Without him, in the second game of the year, Miami – yes, the Dolphins – threw for 273 yards on the Cowboys.

Ware is a beast and I'm glad we got him over Merriman. Now all the Boys need to do is get Spencer going and the crying Greg Ellis can ride off into the sunset.

Ware's jump is so good the Officals can't seem to figure it out....costing us because of their stupidity.

At least you didn't pick the illegal immigrant. Nice choice, but rather obvious.

Submission attempts: 7

Ware is a tremendous athlete and I have to agree, I'm glad the Cowboys drafted him over Merriman. If he can work on an "inside move" to compliment his pass rushing skills he'll be unstopable.

I'd like to see him step up more next year and be a vocal leader for the team. I'm not sure the other defensive guys buy into the rambleings of Bradie James. JMO

Jeff,

"At least you didn't pick the illegal immigrant. Nice choice, but rather obvious.

What are you talking about????????????

Ware is great, but who will benefit most from the new coaches on defense? Everyone got better from the increased pressure that Ware brings, so what does this say about Roy W. Can the new backfield coaches get him to figure it out, or will he become a biscuit heavier and turn into a linebacker?

Posted by Mac @ 10:51 AM Fri, Jan 25, 2008

I find it hard to believe that almost noone is mentioning the fact that on 3rd down of the first series against the G Men, Ware was absolutely not offsides, yet was called. So, instead of punting, the Giants threw a TD to Toomer on the next play. Put that together with the bad intentional grounding on the last play, and I think we got jobbed. The Boys shouldn't have won the game, considering all the mistakes. But, still, the NFL owes us more than a freakin apology, and the referees need to be briefed on Ware's ability to get off the line so quickly.

So true, Mac
Add that to the fact that if Crayton doesn't stop on his route and catches the winning TD, Romo becomes a legend, Eli is on the trade block, Wade is a genius and the strip bars in Dallas have a waiting line outside

If Ware does'nt get called offsides on that play before the touchdown (he was'nt), the G's game would probably have turned out different. That said, the Cowboys were playing so bad overall, they would have probably lost the ensuring game to the Pack.

Ware is an outstanding player.

Is there a curse in Dallas: Dseperados have the best season ever; Mavericks the best season ever; and the Cowboys tied for best season and one of the best statistical offenses ever and they all lose! What gives?

Posted by Redskins_Rule @ 11:43 AM Fri, Jan 25, 2008

Dear Shawn Taylor...thanks for channeling on the DMN blog-site...good to hear your "on top of the world"...with some of the things I read about your past I was fearing otherwise...anyways although I don't feel great about Fassel being hired, I'm going to reserve judgement until Tim Burns supplies his analysis and prescient insight...HA HA HA...Have another DOOHHHNET Wade you fat cow!!!...

Posted by Redskins_Rule @ 11:47 AM Fri, Jan 25, 2008

uhhh...if Biscuit doesn't do his Keystone Cops imitation and knock the real athletes off of Toomer, the Giants at best probably kick a field goal you homer hankies!!!...HA HA HA...

Posted by Shawn Taylor @ 12:06 PM Fri, Jan 25, 2008

Redskins_Rule,
Always remember...God is good. We're just chilling up here waiting to catch the next Cowboy's game through the hole. Peace
but really? Jim Fasell HA HA HA LOLOL

I wanted to comment on Ware...

I, for one, really appreciate that Ware was coached by Parcells he first couple of seasons. Bill stressed fundamentals and told Ware he had to become a complete linebacker. Those teachings combined with Ware's tremendous ability have made it so this guy doesn't really have a weakness. He gets after the passer, he is a beast in the run game, and he even does well in pass coverage/drop backs. He is a complete player, and at least partially, I credit the Tuna.

Dear Shawn...glad you made it up there...but I do need to ask...do they serve jelly doughnuts for breakfast in heaven?...all u can eat pancakes [I bet there's many different flavors of syrup to choose from, like IHOP]?...what about biscuits and gravy?...by hole do you mean Wayne's doughnut hole?...and does Tim Burns determine who makes heaven?...HA HA HA...Hail to the Redskins!!!...

Posted by Shawn Taylor @ 1:56 PM Fri, Jan 25, 2008

Redskins_rule
Please leave Tim Burns alone. If you don't you're going to have to go through me, very much like T.O. and Glenn used to do. And leave Wade's hole alone as well. We do by the way have a plafera of toppings for all dougnuts and pancakes here in heaven. I'm so glad I'm here. I can't wait for the 2008 Redskins season to join me. Bye Bye and God is good.

We need to cut Roy THIS OFFSEASON and take the cap hit NOW so we can afford Demarcus in a few years. Who knows, Ware may even hold out before his contract is up. We need to be ready.
