Saw a few Cowboys scouts in the Cotton Bowl press box, including college scouting coordinator. If you want to overreact, consider that evidence that Jerry is hellbent on trading up for fellow Hog Darren McFadden. Or it could just be the Cowboys doing their due diligence by scouting a game in their backyard that features a bunch of NFL prospects. On a self-promotional note, please join me on the colleges blog for a Mizzou-Arkansas lovefest. |

And there's no chance that they are looking at the 'other' Arkansas RB?
The price we'd have to pay to get McFadden is not worth it. Since Cleveland did not cooperate and we don't have a top 5 pick (bastages), it will probably take 3 #1s and a player (Williams hopefully) to get the #2 pick from the Rams (I doubt Miami takes him) and that is too much. If we trade up it would need to be a few spots to get a good RB or SS, or CB.

I hope it means that D Mac is going to be a Cowboy.

Jones looks good!
Posted by Jrs2300 @ 11:37 AM Tue, Jan 01, 2008
I agree Bill In DC.. I think I want JONES for my money... Well ah.. for Jerry's..
He just seems to do more stuff !!! He would be Perfect with Barber.. Because no matter what.. I want Barber getting at least 150 Carries or more.. and the other getting 200 Plus..

Parcells will give us miami's 1st pick for Jeff Ireland, Keith Davis, Tony Sparano, Jason Ferguson and Bobby Carpenter

So far McFadden is not having a good game. He doesn't look like he's worth the multiple picks we'd have to give up.
Posted by kameleon_o @ 11:57 AM Tue, Jan 01, 2008
Yeah, Jerry could very well be scouting Felix Jones in this game. He'd be the perfect fit with Barber. He's got 4.4 speed and is a great KR.
One other guy I'm looking at who is kind of a sleeper at WR is William Franklin for Mizzou. The guy is 6 foot and has 4.3 speed. Would be a guy to get on the 2nd day of the draft and have him fight it out with Hurd and Austin.

James Stewart is almost as fast, bigger and stronger than DMac.
Wrong RB ... but it does not surprise me with Jerrah. Going for DMac for all the wrong reasons
(Hype, Arkansas, SEC product, Big Media Coverage)
Too bad we don't have a GM that covers West Coast Football. Best PRO players are west of the Rockies.
Posted by LG @ 12:24 PM Tue, Jan 01, 2008
The SEC has produced more NFL players than any other conference. That said, Jonathan Stewart or Felix Jones would do just fine. But,never count Jerry out when talking about trading the farm for a player.
Posted by Jrs2300 @ 12:32 PM Tue, Jan 01, 2008
Your Joking Right Herson ? They can get Ireland and Sparano for free . so you are saying a injured old player and a bust for the #1 pick huh ?
The better deal is this !!
Give them Both #1 picks and Even 2008 first rounder if you have to and get The Number #1 pick from Miami and get Mcfadden... Heck if the Raiders get #3 Get it from them.. Jerry and Al get along Fantastic..
Why I say give the 2009 Number #1 ? Because Dallas won't need it.. why .. because the Stadium will be opening and Free Agents will love to play for Dallas and they will need that Money...
Posted by Billy @ 12:37 PM Tue, Jan 01, 2008
LG,
SEC is a great conference but when producing quality pro players --- PAC 10, Big Ten and Big 12, ACC are better. Just look at the Pro Bowl rosters.
With respect to DMac, any right minded scout will tell you it is very very unclear whether DMac is even the best pro rospect in his SCHOOL let alone in college -- Stewart, Mendenhall to name two.

The cowboys needs:
Cornerback
Receiver
Running Back
Strong Safety
Jerry, please don't blow the entire draft on McFadden. Take Felix and let the other draft picks address the above needs along with free agency, and go out and get more draft choices for Ferguson, Carpenter, and maybe even Spears.
Parcells would be interested in all 3-of those guys, and a Miami 2nd rounder would give the Cowboys pick #32 in the draft, right after the boys #31 after winning the super bowl.
Maybe with the way #5 is playing today, the glitter will come of for Jerry a little bit.

D-Mac is by far the best prospect in this draft if he declares himself eligible...The guy has no quarterback of any kind, so every team is gonna load up in the box to stop him, and look at his stats...You put him on a team with any kind of passing game,(ala Tony Romo and all his weapons) and he will light the field up with his power and speed...The cowboys don't really have a lot of needs only at cornerback and safety...With T.O.'s physique, he could play at least 4 more years at W.O. Jerry do whatever it takes to get D-Mac...There want be another guy like this in about 4-5 years maybe...Put him behind our Huge O-line with our weapons and watch him tear up the N.F.L. Give up those #1 picks...look at our other #1 picks in the past only one or two has really panned out D-Ware and T-New....Go Jerry, D-Mac's your man...

Stay where you are in the draft pick up a good WR that T.O. can mold and pick up Felix with the second first rounder. If he is gone just get Slaton. You can drop Miles Austin because Felix will return kicks

I don't know how much is Arkansas' lack of a passing game, but I have watched McFadden in the bowl game and the previous two games and am not at all impressed. There are tons of backs who can outrun you if you let them get past the linebackers. Not very impressive at all against Missouri as he was the 3rd or 4th best back in that game when his team really needed him.
Posted by john in Victoria @ 3:22 PM Tue, Jan 01, 2008
Considering we desparately need a top corner and a safety who can outrun a 3legged pig, I sure hope Dallas doesn't give up 2 #1 picks for McFadden.
Posted by BlueZone @ 3:34 PM Tue, Jan 01, 2008
Run, Run, Run. McFadden, McFadden, McFadden.
The Cowboys have a passing offense!!!!!!!!!!!
Any running back addition would not improve the team.
We need another WR with a nickname like Bullet, Lightning or Rocket.
Be nice if this guy could also play CB or SS.
Posted by WilliamC @ 3:47 PM Tue, Jan 01, 2008
You guys who want McFadden,
no one denies he is a great talent, BUT,
Please realize that two #1 picks will not
allow the boys to trade up enough to get him
because these are late round picks.
You are looking at not only two #1 picks,
but probably a #1 next year and a player
the boys realy dont want to part with.
All that for a running back who is going to keep Marion Barber off the field and prevent the boys from drafing a corner, a receiver, and a safety.
So you are telling me, you will take McFadden, give up all that, when all you really need is a guy like Felix Jones who can split time with Barber and give the boys a great one-two punch.
It is just way, way too much, and this does not even consider the kind of cap room a guy like McFadden will consume.
Posted by dre @ 4:01 PM Tue, Jan 01, 2008
who cares about those picks, this team is built basically on lower round players...those two picks want hurt anything...go get d-mac and trade some players to the dolphins...
Posted by Tally @ 4:21 PM Tue, Jan 01, 2008
Dre,
what team are you talking about?
The cowboys starting defense alone has 5 or 6 1st round draft choices. the only "late round" starter is Jay Ratliff.
Of the cowboys 11 probowlers, only Romo and Nick Folk were late round or free agent rookies.
If you are going to make a case for drafting D-mac, at least know what the hell you are talking about.
Posted by gary @ 5:04 PM Tue, Jan 01, 2008
please don't use two 1st rounders for mcfadden when fleix jones could fall in your lap...imagine marion/felix in the backfield; and with felix returning kicks as well.
Posted by dre @ 6:10 PM Tue, Jan 01, 2008
Tally..
Romo, undrafted, Marion(4th rd.)Jason Witten(3rd round) T.O.not by cowboys, but(3rd round) Patrick Crayton(7th round) Julius (2nd round) miles and sam hurd(undrafted)need i say more, the majority of this teams players were later rounds or not even drafted and the only good players drafted high were Dware and Tnew...so u don't know what the hell u r talking about....
Posted by Bob @ 6:27 PM Tue, Jan 01, 2008
Pete King mentioned that Miami should consider trading their 3rd rounder for Chad Johnson; perhaps the Cowboys could trade their 2nd rounder. Sign Michael Turner as free agent. Then use the 2 1st round draft picks for CB and whatever else they desire.

SACRED DRAFT RULE - Never fall in love with a player.
I can see a number of good RB and WR that can be drafted with the two #1s and the #2 draft pick. I'm not as familiar with the DBs. Just to name a few:
RB - Felix Jones (Ark), Jonathan Stewart (Oregon), Mike Hart (Michigan), Steve Slaton (West Virginia)
WR - Mario Manningham (Michigan), Arrington (Michigan), Deshaun Jackson (Cal)
Posted by Tally @ 8:30 PM Tue, Jan 01, 2008
Dre,
OK, I see. Now, "later round" in your book is anything that isnt a 1st round draft choice.
Never heard anyone refer to first day draft choices as "Later round" before.
You identified exactly one starter above that was taken after the 3rd round, Romo. We are talking about the top 22-players on the team. You identified only one selected after the 3rd round(and I even gave you Ratliff). You have proved my point, not yours.
Its a moot point anyway because the cowboys two 1st round draft choices are not nearly enough to trade up and get McFadden.
Posted by WilliamC @ 8:37 PM Tue, Jan 01, 2008
Bob,
What the heck. I would trade one of our 1st rounders for Chad Johnson. If he could be had for the boys 2nd rounder, I would make that trade without blinking an eye.

leave this guy alone he a slower version of reggie bush to small get secondary help,i said secondary help!!!! get some safeties that can cover also get some corners that cover!!!!!!! theres plenty of other running backs you can get down the draft...............
