Wade Phillips usually goes out of his way to defend his players. That wasn't the case with Patrick Crayton yesterday. "If Patrick wouldn't have slowed down, it would have been a touchdown," Phillips said, referring to throw to Crayton in end zone in the final minute of the loss to the Giants. Crayton acknowledged yesterday that his hesitation could have been the difference between playoff failure and preparing for the NFC championship game. He elaborated on the play during an appearance on Michael Irvin's ESPN 103.3 show today. Crayton said his route was supposed to be a 16-yard out, but he was surprised that he was able to blow by the cornerback so easily. He hesitated while deciding whether to adjust his route to continue running vertical, which is obviously what Tony Romo expected. "I got on top of him [and] I was like, 'Should I break out and let him sit underneath, or should I just go ahead and go?'" Crayton said. "That slight hesitation cost me that extra yard I probably needed." |

sounds like a plausible story to me...

Did he explain the drop pass?
Posted by Nick @ 12:57 PM Tue, Jan 15, 2008
How about holding yourself accountable for dropping the ball, EXCUSES. It seems that is all Dallas has left. The better team WON.
Posted by steve @ 12:57 PM Tue, Jan 15, 2008
Just proves if you give a guy 36 hours he can justify anything. millionspare!
Posted by Wes @ 12:58 PM Tue, Jan 15, 2008
Doesn't really matter...if he had gotten to the ball he just would have dropped it.
Posted by Dillo @ 1:09 PM Tue, Jan 15, 2008
It was a huge mistake, but no more of one than the dropped passes. You pay someone millions of dollars to play at a professional level, then you damn well better catch a couple of easy passes. Let's try taking away 500K per dropped pass and see how well the recievers improve. There is no accountability for poor play, only the paychecks keep on coming. Dallas was not prepared for this game. When they took their mental vacation during the Washington game, I knew then, that they were done for. You cant put the flame out for two weeks and expect to light it up and have instant win. Romo should be able to take a vacation, but knowing the bad press that was out there on him and his bimbo, he should have used restaint and stayed under the radar. Possibly practice passes throuhg a tire, or learning how to get away from linemen. His teenage "I'll do what I want" attitude, combined with having to help bimbette revitalize her career and his not focusing on Sunday, let to his poor performance. It was a train wreck all around, and New York gave us a big ole Texas butt whoopin. One that we roundley deserved.

He probably spent that second trash talking the cornerback.

If you keep your mouth shut and aren't constantly running your mouth about other teams and players when you've accomplished NOTHING yet in the NFL you don't leave yourself so open to criticism. So fire away at him...
Posted by william @ 1:20 PM Tue, Jan 15, 2008
Aren't players supposed to think in the practices so that they can play in the games? Doesn't Wade Phillips hold light practices?

This is EXACTLY the point. Man, you screw up in any of OUR average, typical, every-day kind of non-millionaire jobs and most of us pay some kind of price. Why shouldn't these guys?
Sure, there are only about 2,000 people in the whole country who can play at the NFL level, but too many of them get fat and happy and don't seem to want to win. It's easier to give up when you know your contract is guaranteed and you can go home to your mansion-fortress and enjoy your fat-cat life, win OR lose.
Bring back incentive contracts AND add in deductions for poor play.

EXCUSES
Posted by Malcolm @ 1:31 PM Tue, Jan 15, 2008
It took my some time to cool down and I'm still a bit upset, but in my moments of peace, I realize "It just wasn't meant to be." Plain and simple. For all of those things to happen to the Cowboys against an inferior opponent, this is the only conclusion that makes sense.
Still, the loss is bothersome. I guess it's better to have no expectations versus having thoughts of grandeur when it comes to the Cowboys.

I agree with all of these angry posts over the last couple of days. I worried about the way this team got too lax over December, and I worried that Romo was getting too tangled up in that skirt. I worried that Wade was too impressed with 13 wins. All of this came together on Sunday, and the WHOLE team laid a big stinky one.
While Crayton blew his opportunities, I think if you look at his whole year, he is a contributor. I'd love to have another big time 2nd receiver to go with TO, and have Crayton as the 3rd guy.
I think he learned his lesson this year about trash talking!
Posted by Haten Crayton @ 1:43 PM Tue, Jan 15, 2008
Steve,
You are absolutely right.
Truth of the matter is, he gave up on the route
because he didnt think the ball was coming his way.
Would have felt better about Crayton if he had just been honest about it. On the other hand..............
I dont agree with all the Crayton haters regarding his future with the team. He will not have to be a 2nd receiver next year. The boys will find a good compliment for T.O. for the other side.
Crayton will be an excellent 3rd receiver out of the slot next year, which, if you remember, is what he was going to be this year if Terry Glenn had been healthy.
throw him under the bus for a terrible game - but that does not mean he will not be a solid contributor as a 3rd receiver next year.
Posted by William @ 1:44 PM Tue, Jan 15, 2008
Chris from Mass? We are only talking about football players here. They can't do much more than just catch the ball if they are a receiver, run with the ball if they are a running back and throw the ball if they are a quarterback. I think the main problem that Patrick Crayton had during the last game was that he wasn't catching the ball. He was caught thinking because someone forgot to hit him over the head with a frying pan before the game.
I will agree with you that these guys don't act normally like we do because of their millions. For example, I often drive down to the Taco Bell to buy some tacos just to peak a look at the pretty young lady who works there as a cashier. In comparison, Tony Romo often flys down to Mexico with Jessica Simpson.

hey... you guys are sitting here blaming crayton for the game... and you know what? it's not fair... he's my WR man (sniff).... we lost as a team man.. (crying) we lost as a team... (sniff)
Posted by bigbluefan63 @ 1:55 PM Tue, Jan 15, 2008
we read all the pregame comments but when it was played Crayton showed what he was all about, crucial drops, undisciplined routes, and quick exit out the lockerroom
Posted by Lee @ 2:03 PM Tue, Jan 15, 2008
woulda, coulda, shoulda. It's over. Let's move on. It never should have even come down to that play. With the earlier drops by Crayton and Fasano, the bad tackling, and the stupid penalties there were dozens of plays that turned this game. This was just one of them.
Posted by red 88 @ 2:32 PM Tue, Jan 15, 2008
I think you're right Lance, he slowed down to talk some trash to the DB.
Posted by LJM @ 2:55 PM Tue, Jan 15, 2008
"Should I break out and let him sit underneath, or should I just go ahead and go?'"
Hhmmm...nothing between you and the end zone, where your Romeo QB is expecting you to go, with the season on the line and a chance to make up for your drops...that's a tough call.
No wonder you're a pro...
Posted by John @ 3:06 PM Tue, Jan 15, 2008
It's the end of the game with everything on the line, a touchdown is needed and you're not quite sure what to do...one wonders how the coaches feel about that excuse. I was so surprised I blew by the corner because I usually don't blow by anyone that I had to think a second, should I go to the end zone and be open for a touchdown or get us a first down? He's a good 3rd receiver, but clearly not a play maker in a big game.
Posted by shahab @ 3:06 PM Tue, Jan 15, 2008
the bottom line is he choked and cost us the game. he gave up on that play because he didn't want any part of it. unlike playmakers who want the ball when the game is on the line, this bum wanted no part of it. and so when he beat the corner he was probably like 'oh crap, what do it do? he's going to throw me the ball. maybe i should pull up and he won't throw me the ball." what a player, what a player.
Posted by William @ 5:03 PM Tue, Jan 15, 2008
Maybe it would be better off for Patrick to be the 5th receiver and never play, John.
Posted by aaron @ 5:54 PM Tue, Jan 15, 2008
ROY WILLIAMS from the LIONS will be #2 reciever next year. You watch. Crayton? Why would you be "breaking out"? There's no time for you to run an out. It was endzone or bust....and he knows it.
Posted by dsiff @ 7:15 PM Tue, Jan 15, 2008
Crayton screwed the pooch guys. You take the out
if that is all you have and get out of bounds. If
the go is there you take it.He had to think and
that is where he messed up.A good receiver just
goes!!!
Posted by Bud @ 7:48 PM Tue, Jan 15, 2008
That longest yard would have won it. No less pivotal than the Seattle Slip. Forget the Glenn pick at the end; that was a desperation heave. True, game was lost long before Crayton's hesitation, but he had burned his man. When the ball was in the air, I was thinking, there's the miracle win. Oh, well. Go Packers.
Posted by lizzy @ 8:09 PM Tue, Jan 15, 2008
Here is my thought. Confident players "generally" don't have to talk trash; they just do their talking on the field by their play.
Crayton does not really have any confidence in his abilities. As someone just said, he did not want to be the guy responsible for the outcome of the game. He probably is more comfortable being the third receiver. That is a problem that will not change.
Posted by mcindallas @ 2:25 AM Wed, Jan 16, 2008
"Truth of the matter is, he gave up on the route
because he didnt think the ball was coming his way."
Isn't a receiver supposed to run every route as if the ball is coming to him? Crayton ruined another Cowboys comeback and cost them the season. True, there were other factors that contributed to the loss but in the end his indecision ended the season. Regardless of how bad it was, they still had a chance to win. When you have a chance to win and don't execute nothing that happened before really matters. All that matters is having more points when the clock shows 00:00.

People, the Cowboys lost the game way before the play. All of this coulda and shoulda means nothing. Giants corner droped a sure interception too. Boys lost, get over it.
PATRIOTS RULE
Posted by Acura @ 10:26 AM Thu, Jan 17, 2008
The coaches fault. A lot of pro players....a lot of players making mistakes. Alvin Harper caught his pass against 49ers. Newman should have caught the last punt...Crayton never ran one back.

GO COWBOYS .WE WILL GET ARE SIX RING NEXT YEAR
Posted by patrick @ 10:36 PM Thu, Jan 17, 2008
dallas beat the giants asses up and down the field that day. crayton blew it twice. you wont see him in big D next year
Posted by johnny g @ 12:01 PM Sun, Jan 20, 2008
you can put the blame on Crayton, but I really think the clincher was the bye week. Phillips should have used all of the extra "days off" to prepare the Boys physically and mentally. If this team was under Mike Ditka, or Bill Parcell's rule, you would have seen a more charged up and motivated team!!!

ive been a dallas fan for 35 years and never got upset with a player as i am now first whats this with to thinking he is too good to play at 100% never mind you all the drop pass he has with the years in the league that he has there should be none cryton is young but still never stop and guess what you need to do just get open and let remo do his job we have the tools to win again like we did in the 90's
Posted by Don @ 10:52 AM Mon, Jan 21, 2008
Great QB's don't wait until 4th down. Romo will never make it to the big game. The Cowboy ownership should sell for not understanding what it takes to win a SB. Oh it was Johnson in the past not Jones.

It seems that for the last several years the cowboys lay down and quit the last 4 or 5 games of the year, I know a lot of it is attitude where do it come from? Two tickets in pay envelope to the superbowl might be sending the wrong signals. It must come from JERRY.
