Crayton faces the music

MICHAEL AINSWORTH / DMN

Patrick Crayton didn't comment after the playoff loss other than to wish the Giants good luck, but he faced the media like a man today.

Crayton said he didn't regret providing the Giants with bulletin-board material. And he didn't have a problem with the Giants calling him out after the game, either.

"They got the last word," Crayton said. "I wish them the best, because I think if we were in that situation, we would probably take some shots at them as well."

Crayton also acknowledged that he should have scored the game-winning touchdown on third down in the final minute. He admitted that he hesitated after getting good separation from the cornerback on a vertical route. As a result, Tony Romo's on-the-money pass sailed over Crayton's head. As Wade Phillips said during this afternoon's press conference, the Cowboys win the game if Crayton doesn't slow down.

And Crayton learned a painful lesson.

"If you hesitate for one moment," he said, "that can be the difference."

It's funny that I keep reading about Romo's mediocre performance. You take the drops from Crayton and this play, add the fact that the line played what appeared to be its worst game and Romo played as well as he could.

While I appreciate Romo not throwing his boys under the bus, he could have certainly made a good case.

Posted by Hiding In NY @ 2:25 PM Mon, Jan 14, 2008

Ummm...no Patrick, if we had won the game, YOU would have taken some shots at them...dont you see that???? NO one not even TO was taking shots at the Giants. They are a division rival, with more than enough motivation to beat us already, and all you do is add to it...and then NOT back it up.

He sucks, i wish so badly that we hadnt signed him this season - Romo played his ass off and Crayton rewarded him with jack squat. Now Tony's gonna be the one facing the real criticism and Craytons big mouth will be at it again come week 1.

Posted by BamBam @ 2:27 PM Mon, Jan 14, 2008

This blog should consider providing some of these press conferences, etc in the form of mp3 files, which could be downloaded.

Posted by TC @ 2:31 PM Mon, Jan 14, 2008

thats right Crayton....take it like a man, except a real man would have faced the media last night (even TO gave it his best effort behind the mic). He's no better than a good No. 3 or an average No.2...either way, not good enough to talk the trash he does, even if he had made the TD...or not dropped two passes, or not muffed the punt. Cryin shame. It will a off season for that hump.

Posted by Jackie Smith @ 2:33 PM Mon, Jan 14, 2008

I think Crayton played a great game and was clutch when it counted...

Posted by Kay @ 2:37 PM Mon, Jan 14, 2008

He should have caught the ball with his big mouth.

Posted by Dungy Fan @ 2:39 PM Mon, Jan 14, 2008

Face it, Cowboys don't have what it takes to make it to the big time. SO, they can go home to their mansions and maybe they'll have what it takes next year.

Posted by Oslec @ 2:40 PM Mon, Jan 14, 2008

First Jeff Garcia, now Tony Romo...there's no doubt about it, the NY Football Giants hate Hispanics!

Posted by Ted @ 2:42 PM Mon, Jan 14, 2008

Crayton should stay in his Oak Lawn condo he shares with Billy Davis until this all blows over.

Posted by chris graham @ 2:52 PM Mon, Jan 14, 2008

crayton would have caught the ball if he had a gap n his mouth as wide as strahan

Posted by John McAuley @ 2:53 PM Mon, Jan 14, 2008

I like Crayton, I like him a lot. I also think he is an excellent 2nd receiver if he continues to press on hard work. In addition, I really like his attitude as a player. This is a painful learning experience for him. If I know him like I think I know him from the interviews, he will come back even better next year, which will make the team better. The irony of this whole thing is, he has the best hands among all the receivers. If you watch his catches, you will see 90% of the time he catches with his hands, and not with his body like the other receivers. The better team lost. Oh yeah, on that first TD drive by the Giants, Ware wasn’t off sides. If the flag isn’t thrown the Giants punt the ball to the Boys. Also – if we don’t revamp our coverage on Special Teams during the off season and training camp…we should prepare ourselves for these same feelings we Cowboy fans are feeling now.

John in Eagle country.

Posted by Barry @ 2:57 PM Mon, Jan 14, 2008

Crayton is nothing but a loudmouth. I'd much rather have Sam Hurd on the field.

Crayton sucks and it's unfortunate that we are now stuck with him.

Posted by Johnny Mitchell @ 3:02 PM Mon, Jan 14, 2008

Crayton QUIT on a route with the game on the line. I have an easier time accepting a drop with time on the clock than a QUIT on a potential game winner!

Posted by Bill Mac @ 3:03 PM Mon, Jan 14, 2008

Dallas had a great season... 12 pro bowl players... but individual players don't win championships, teams do... and the Giants put the better team on the field yesterday... they've been playing with grit and momentum every since the NE game.

From a Giants fan.

Only one reciever I want to see back next year and it isn't big mouth Crayton. Go provide fodder for someone else's opponents. Jerry stop lusting after McFadden and get T.O. some help that will step up when needed instead of dropping the ball. Get a new D- coordinator while you are at it. WTF letting the Giants score with less than two minutes left in the half. Only good thing about the loss is I don't have to mess with the captcha code anymore. See ya'll next year.

Posted by 666 @ 3:06 PM Mon, Jan 14, 2008

It is amazing thru it all, if Crayton had just not given up on that next to last play of the game, the boys would have won.

He had great separation from the DB and the pass was right on the money IF he had not slowed down, thinking the ball was not coming his way.

By the time he saw it coming, it was too late to catch up to it.

Thats the play that I will remember from the game over all the others. Romo throw a perfect pass if Crayton just continued on his route, all the boys would have been hosting Green Bay next week with what I think would have been much better focus and intensity.

The other side of that coin, however, it the Giants deserved to win, not our cowboys, who had all the advantages going into this game.

Posted by Henry @ 3:07 PM Mon, Jan 14, 2008

Cowboys need to stop believing their own press clippings. How many 100's of penalty yards did they lose yesterday? How can you expect to win like that?

Posted by Eagle @ 3:10 PM Mon, Jan 14, 2008

With consistently poor Cowboys performance over many years and Jerry's extremely high prices for his new stadium, I have given up as a fan. Jerry can have them all to himself.

Posted by John McAuley @ 3:10 PM Mon, Jan 14, 2008

Guys ease on Crayton - I know it hurts...it hurts bad. I didn't answer my phone and probably won't for the next two weeks. I won't watch any ESPN either. Nothing is worst then Jackie Smith dropping the TD in the Super Bowl against the Steelers...NOTHING!! You young Boys fans may not remember that one and you see this is hurtful, which it is. However, I remember not too long ago I wanted the team to cut F. Adams and look at him now! We have a very good team, which just earned more PLAYOFF EXPERIENCE!!

John in Philly Country!

Posted by n8vtxn @ 3:14 PM Mon, Jan 14, 2008

I have been watchin the Boys for forever. Born here - nothin but a Boys fan. Romo did the best he could with his line being pushed around, Crayton dropped the pass's. We might have wanted it as bad
as the Gmen, but we didn't play like we wanted it as bad. This ol stuff of we'll get em next year, is getting old. Hope we get'em next year.

Posted by Bill @ 3:14 PM Mon, Jan 14, 2008

Romo looked rattled in the second half because his line failed to protect him for the first time this year. He had to be scared for his life. The team failed because they quit trying and started reading their press several games ago.

good heavens John in Philly......sounds like you and T.O. have the same sensitive gay emotional issues....it hurts, hurts bad?!?

Posted by cro @ 3:23 PM Mon, Jan 14, 2008

Like a couple of others have said, I've been neutral but very supportive of Wade. I believed at the time that his hire was a very good one. But these comments are a magnifying glass of his history. These comments explain why his teams have never won in the post season...no acceptance of the loss...only denial..."the better team lost"...Wade, you may have been the better team the day before, but that's little consolation now. NFL history is filled with "better" teams that never won when they were supposed to. So were they really the better team?
I started to get worried when we got all those pro bowl nominations...I was afraid it would screw with their intensity and drive and they sure played that way in this game.
Wade has been using the 13-3 argument when people brought up the "are you concerned" questions at the end of the year. Well, now that we are one and done AGAIN, does anybody out there feel any better this year than last? To me, this feels much worse than last year.
Wade, if your goal is to have the "better" team, congratulations, according to your standards, success has been achieved. Does that mean you can leave?

Posted by Timm @ 3:26 PM Mon, Jan 14, 2008

Someone needs to tell this guy to stop writing checks his mouth can't cash!! That being said, it was still a fun season most of the way and Crayton did have some pretty good moments. T.O. was ripped alot last year for dropping the ball and did some this year too but had a great year this season. Hopefully, Crayton can come back next year with a little more maturity and have a good season too. Really makes you miss the days of having K-Mart making plays from the slot.

Posted by Bob @ 3:33 PM Mon, Jan 14, 2008

The Cowboys had PLENTY of time to come back after Jackie Smith's drop. This is completely different:

1)Why no T.O. or Witten involvement?
2)Pocket was collapsing throughout the 2nd half
3)Julius Jones did not provide anything, though fresh.
4)The league seemed to catch on to Jason's offense, didn't it?
5)Yesterday the club was run-heavy, lacked a vertical attack, and seemed down. Like when Parcells was our coach.
6)Wade seems to think that quoting the regular season record is a cure-all.

Posted by John McAuley @ 3:33 PM Mon, Jan 14, 2008

Cro your statement is on point. Not only Wade I can also say the DC and our defense underachieve this season. Some of us remember the Doomsday defense that put fear in all QBs. I was hoping more from Spears this year. I want Jason G. to become the HC for the simple fact I want a young guy to be around for the next 25 years, ala Tom Landry! While this loss reminds me of last seasons lost, I honestly feel we will be in this position next year. Which pose the question, where on this team should be address the most. Yep I know most of you are angry at Crayton…but if you’re a true Boys fan you will start looking at what has hurt us all season long.

John in Philly Country
PS - I miss K-Mart too!

Is there any truth to ESPN's post game that Owner Jones left two Cowboy-Packer Championship game tickets in each players locker prior to thr game with Newy York? I was sure that's what they said.

Posted by JD @ 3:35 PM Mon, Jan 14, 2008

Dungy Fan, the Cowboys have won 5 Super Bowls. Dungy: 1.

TO worked hard to get back and played his tail off for the most part. If he had ripped Romo, everybody would be jumping all over him. He is the only receiver that should be back next year. Get some young playmaker WRs.

Kept a roster spot open for Glenn for this? WTF?

Patrick Crayton is still a b*tch.

I dont know which is worst? The game yesterday or having to read the classless BS by people like Rams(you up the a$$) fan. I do know this Ramsfan your team would have loved to be where we are so shut the Fck up! Steven Jackson is overrated so get over it. If Crayton cant back it up he needs to shut the Fck up. Play the freakin game butter fingers and quit trying to impress TO. Stahan and the rest of the classless Gnats will get blown out by the Packers. NO WAY THEY WIN IN LAMBO! I know this is probably not what everyone wants to hear. But the Cowboys will be a better team because of this. Forget what all the maggots (feeding on a dead carcas)say about the Boys. They hate that we are still America's team. They want to kick us when we are down because they drop their team after one bad game and are confused that we don't. Thats just the way it is, price for being loyal to the greatest franchise in the history of the NFL. No other team will ever be able to take that from Dallas. 5 Superbowls people, many championship games. many playoff appearances and victories. This is a big bump in the road but only a bump. Hopefully this will get rid of the bandwagon jumpers. One thing is for sure after the superbowl all teams are undefeated. its on 7 months away. All of the Cowboys players and fans need to step away from the mediots for a little while and let it sink in and life get back to normal. We have a great team and I so look forward to the resilency (sorry if misspelled) this team will bring next season. Oh and let me say one more time;
HEY RAMS (IT HARD IN YOUR A$$) FAN! GO PLAY IN YOUR OWN YARD. ONLY LEGIT COWBOYS FANS ALLOWED NIMROD!

Posted by cory @ 4:11 PM Mon, Jan 14, 2008

It is interesting watching the game that you could tell Crayton did not finish that route even though he had the corner beat, but yet Cowlishaw blamed Romo for that. Romo tried to make too much happen, but his receivers (minus witten) played awful, along with an awful line

Posted by Gotham @ 4:18 PM Mon, Jan 14, 2008

Patrick Crayton isn't good enough to talk trash, yet the morons in Dallas ate it up. Anyway, thanks for the flash-in-the-pan season...maybe you tools can try to win a playoff game in the next few years in that new, tacky-looking stadium. I bet the tractor pulls there are gonna be awesome.

Yes, Cowboys were Superbowl champs 5 times, but that wasn't under the same coach. Tom Landry led Dallas to two of those Super Bowl wins.
If as an employee you got payed to do a job and did it the way the boys on the cowboys have done theirs you would be fired. Here's a great Tom Landry quote for ya, "When you want to win a game, you have to teach. When you lose a game, you have to learn."

Alright, I have to admit I was mad as heck at everyone yesterday and ready to tear the whole thing apart, but when it comes down to it there are only a few missing pieces on both side of the ball and the coaching staff. We have our head coach so you cavemen can crawl back into your hole. He took the right approach. The players let everyone down as a group. This has been and will always be my team, no matter what.

Posted by Denise @ 5:47 PM Mon, Jan 14, 2008

Crayton = b*tch

Posted by AP @ 5:48 PM Mon, Jan 14, 2008

I think fans need to take it easy. We should be dissapointed because they did start 12-1 and finished 13-4. Let's just remember this was a team that 2 years ago doesn't make the playoffs, last year was 10-6 and just eeked into the playoffs. We had a coaching change, new system on offense and defense. It doesn't happen over night. You have to go through tough times to get to the great times. Dallas went through some tough times in the last years of Landry and the first 3 years of Jimmy. Dallas has a great core of young players. Some tough decisions about older ones. But when you have a franchise quaterback,a great tightend, a good running back and a good line(didn't play like it in the second half)youre halfway there. This team needs continuity and some added leadership and toughness from maybe the outside. A mean tough minded defensive leader added to the defense would be a place to start. The team did well this year, cut them a little slack. Romo has started all of what 25-26 games. How long did it take Peyton Manning and the talented Colts to win the Superbowl? The Cowboys have the cap room, plenty of draft picks comming up. What happens in the next 4-6 months will utimately determine where this franchise is headed. So far I think they are headed in the right direction. BTW, I know people are p1ssed at crayton, but he is still a young receiver. He will learn. He has great hands(last night though was a bad night)and has good speed. He will develop into a very good receiver. You can't blame him for Romo not having enough time to hit a wide open Miles Austin, or wide open Owens. You can't blame him for allowing a touchdown in 50secs from 72 yards away. Everyone had a hand in this loss.

Posted by lj @ 6:20 PM Mon, Jan 14, 2008

Crayton is a frickin' idiot. Not only did he mouth off all year and then choke big time by dropping 2 passes and quiting on a route that would have won the game, he didn't even learn his lesson. He didn't regret giving them bulletin board material. I used to really like Patrick but he is a trash talking idiot that motivates the other team and then doesn't come close to backing up his big mouth with his play. What a loser. If he would spend the time working to improve that he does jacking his jaw, he might develop into a decent player. He should not have been signed to a new contract. They need to get this cancer off the team but now we will be stuck with him mouthing off and losing more games for years to come. What a jerk and a terrible example he sets for the youth.

Posted by ap @ 6:21 PM Mon, Jan 14, 2008

Huh - another "AP" posting. And I agree with him, for the most part.

I hope old man Favre wins two more games, and then retires. And then I hope some of the younger talent on this team grows the eff up.

Posted by Ehop @ 6:29 PM Mon, Jan 14, 2008

Crayton this, Crayton that.
Fact is Romo was not great. Remember he was going against second tier, perhaps third tier DB's. The Giants even had someone off their practice squad.
The O-line was terrible (Romo was on his backside almost every pass play in the second half).
When the chips were down, this team did not get it done.

Posted by Lazlo Boogie #1 COWBOYS fan living in NYC @ 6:38 PM Mon, Jan 14, 2008

First off Crayton is paid to make those catches (especially in the BIG games). Drops like that are unexceptable. Secondly Our Offensive line di a Good job protecting Tony the entire 1st half, but I don't know what happened in the second. It's like we melted or faded out. We got bullied BIG-TIME. We gotta work on consistency. Third...Tony had T.O. in single coverage the whole 4th quarter and threw to him once. Still confused on that one. Especially knowing that most receiver can't match up with T.O. on a 1 on 1 basis. Fianlly we definitely need to work on our "special teams unit" We dont have any speed in our returns and iur ounts were off. Warning to crayton...get it right or get lost. I'd rather have an Unhappy Steve Smith from the "Panthers" than to have an unsure Crayton.

Words of Advice: If we dont work on what I mentioned especially defending the pass coverage and our Offensive Line consistency...We're doomed to see this all again next season. Also, Im not easily convinced by stats anymore. To impress me we're gonna have tro really make something happy in the post-season next year.

DUDE I've been watching the Cowboys for over 30 years and to say ease up on Crayton is absurd. You need to let the past go and realize that he gets paid a lot of money to do his job, you know the one he didn't do. He CLEARLY gave up on a route that he had seperation on and he HAD to know with the game on the line that the ball [with that kind of seperation] was coming his way. I'll give him the one over the middle he dropped but the quitting on the route.. NO WAY. He reminded me of Randy Moss not running his routes in Oakland. YOU cannot do this when you are paid VERY well to do it.

He also needs to shut his big mouth. He clearly couldn't back it up and he proved he is no better than a low end #3.

Posted by Big D fan @ 7:56 PM Mon, Jan 14, 2008

I think some D coaches wanted the season to be over so they can apply for the available coaching jobs, before they are all filled. Coaches are responsible for players discipline. I alway though you kill the clock when your are at least few TD's ahead. Those long drives did nothing but get Dallas O line very tired. Then they get critisized for not protecting Romo. Being very disappointed is an understatement. Romo is not to blame for this one.

Hey dumbass, they are called America's Team for a reason! People all over the world are loyal fans. I've been a fan since I was a little kid. I suffered through Troy's 1-15 year. There are a very large contingent of fans here in the DC area (more bandwagoners this year, judging by the increase in car flags I've seen this season, but there are still many here). Ask Jerry Jones, who said that a large percentage of Cowboy merchandise is purchased from addresses in the DC area. That dude is cool to openly display his Cowboy fandom in Philly. These deadskin fans don't do have anything clever to say.

I absolutely hate the guy and all season I just knew his big mouth nonsense was going to come back and bite him in the arse. Loud mouth punks always get justice in the end. He's dead to me.
Notice how nobody's lining up to interview our worthless defensive coordinator Brian Stewart? Or our pathetic circus clown special teams coach Bruce Read? And here's a suggestion for Jacques "I Suck Elephant Balls" Reeves: Clean out your locker because you SUCK!! And take Roy Williams....and Marcus Spears.....and Bradie James.....and Akin Ayodele....and the skunk Fasano....and Wade Phillips.....and Jason overrated Garrett....and Rowdy....don't forget Rowdy....what a joke that idiot is. Other that that....I guess everything is fine. Let the long dark offseason begin. Zzzzzzzzzzzz........

Honestly, Patrick Crayton is just another Billy Davis on the field, isn't he? Let your game do your talking...oh wait, he doesn't have one.

Anyone miss Alvin Harper and Kelvin Martin like I do now?

ALL "PRO" PLAYERS SHOULD BE PAID FOR WHAT THEY DO DURING EACH GAME. HOW MUCH BETTER WOULD THEY PLAY "IF" THEY WERE PAID TO "DO THEIR JOB". THAT WAY YOU DON'T "DO YOUR JOB WELL" -- "YOU DON'T GET PAID WELL" AND GUESS WHAT?,--RIGHT NOW, WIN OR LOOSE "THEY ALL GEY PAID WELL"

Come on cowboy fans, you guys had a record 12 pro bowlers on your team. And still lost so stop all of this what if talk. You guys just took this game to lightly, and got your butts whipped. Maybe next time you will show the opponet more respect, and keep your fat mouths shut.Go Giants.

LESS PENALTIES, GET SPECIAL TEAMS HELP, (PACMAN JONES WOULD HELP A LOT IN TWO AREAS.) TRADE ROY WILLIAMS, TRADE JULIUS JONES, AND ANOTHER RECEIVER TO COMPLIMENT T.O = SUPER BOWL
