Baltimore Sun columnist Mike Preston, who seems mad about this whole thing, sure thinks so. From Preston's latest blog post: Garrett got his money, but he basically looks like a fool around the league. All he had to do was go to Jones in the first place, demand the increase and not fly around the country, putting on this dog-and-pony show. I hope he has good success in Dallas because owners around the league have long memories. They won't forget the charade he just pulled. Eh, I'd be willing to bet that owners will forget "the charade" if the Cowboys put up 500 points and win a playoff game or two next season. Garrett's work will determine whether he's still a hot head coaching candidate in the future, not whether he hurt some feelings in Baltimore. |

Yeah, whatever. And Parcells used Atlanta (and ESPN) to get his price in Miami. It's called capitalism, baby.

LOL... I wonder what he thinks of Bobby Petrinno...

Well put Timmy.
And since when is weighing your options, and getting experience in a head-coach interview setting, called a "dog and pony show"?

Preston is just upset that the OC job with America's Team is a more prestigious position than the HC job in a town where a team once left in the middle of the night.

Bitter much?
Reminds me of my favorite joke, where a guy is breaking up with his girlfriend and she says to him "You'll never find anybody like me again." and his response is "I didn't want you, so why would I want somebody like you?"
Crayton: b*tch.

How can Preston type with those crybaby tears hitting his keyboard?

Would he like some cheese with his whine?
Posted by tex @ 12:17 PM Thu, Jan 17, 2008
The answer is yes.
He used the Ravens, Falcons and Jerry himself to hike his salary here. This way, he rides his horse Tony Romo, who is better than any QB that Baltimore or Atlanta have or could get.
I think most Cow fans are conflicted about this. On the one hand, we appreciate his work to make this the best offense this side of New England. We are also ticked off about his behavior in the last week of the season and the offense's dropoff the last month of the season.
Jason is neither the genius everyone says he is, nor is he the clueless idiot he portrayed the last month of the season. He is just a guy who rode his horses until his horses let him down. Now, that the season is over, he wanted to line his pockets more.
Oh well. If he's here, who cares. If he left, who cares. The bigger concern is the substandard fat dufus head coach known as Wade Phillips
Posted by RP @ 12:18 PM Thu, Jan 17, 2008
Arthur Blank flirted with Pete Carroll even after he was spurned by Bobby Petrino with a few games left in the NFL season.
Yea, owners sure do have a long memory...
Posted by Tom B. @ 12:23 PM Thu, Jan 17, 2008
I would think it went down that Jerry indicated that maybe, "Jason should test the market and find his perceived value and come back and he would sweeten the pot" so to speak. He probably gets to pick his offensive assistant coaches and a bonus for post season success to go with the immediate bigger money. With any luck he can be The Man when Wade hangs up his spurs. I'd say he will be close by on draft day. In other words he gets to rule all within his perview and let Wade take the fall for losing. Sweet deal!

Garrettt is a wuss. He isnt man enough to take a head job because he knows he couldnt handle it. Now he is just sitting around stabing Phillips in the back waiting for his job. He has the morals to fit right in with jones and also the lack of balls too. What a clasless loser

Are you kidding me? It's all about results in the NFL. If Garrett has success again next year, he will surely be mentioned again for a head coaching position around the league. The guy is a Princeton grad with playing and coaching experience. Don't underestimate the owners of the NFL... They're just as smart and realize Garrett has youth, talent, and potential.
Posted by kd @ 12:34 PM Thu, Jan 17, 2008
ESPN is reporting that Garrett is now the highest paid assistant in the NFL as well as has an Assistant Head Coach title

The Ravens' media are just a little full of themselves these days. It is the game, it gets played every year. And the Ravens lost the game. Oh wait, kinda how their season went, right? Garrett is absolutely right to pass on that organization, their would have been throwing him to wolves at the first chance they get.
Posted by Randy Galloway's empty flask @ 12:39 PM Thu, Jan 17, 2008
uh lets see...the Garrett family has long been involved with the Cowboys....no question how bright Jason is and owner Jones witnessed this first hand when he was a player...owner Jones getting older and probably is tired of the coaching/infra-structure turnover...what better way to solve all of this long term than to have the person on staff that you would trust like you did Bill in assisting with setting up the whole organization...and only a buffoon would question the invterview process...an interview is the best opportunity there is to promote yourself whether you are interested in a job or not...never turn down an interview request...its free, its great practice, and if you already have a good job only good things can come of it...

well another enemy team, add the ravens 2 the redskins,steelers,giants,49ers,eagles,packers ,now dolphins.Oh well gotta luv it.

Are we bitter in Baltimore ???
Well, Too BAD get over it !!!!
Posted by PaulC @ 12:45 PM Thu, Jan 17, 2008
Both sides look bad. Garrett should have let Baltimore know during the interview that he would return to Dallas for a salary match. Anyone who has ever interviewed for an important job knows exactly how to handle this. For their part, Baltimore never should have offered Garrett the job unless they were sure he would accept. That's SOP for any company, institution, or agency making a significant hire. Both Garrett and Baltimore look like amateurs. Both have burned some bridges.
Posted by Peter @ 12:47 PM Thu, Jan 17, 2008
Cowboy Bill- You are way off base. Garrett didn't take either job because they weren't great opportunities. Like his good friend Troy Aikman said, he wouldn't turn down a HC job unless he felt the quality of the job wasn't there. Who's he going to work with, Troy Smith? Boller? Harrington & Redman? please!!!! Even if he went to Atlanta and drafted Matt Ryan. If he has 2 or 3 losing seasons waiting for this kid to "get it" he's going to get fired.
Posted by COWBOY BILL LAMZA @ 1:05 PM Thu, Jan 17, 2008
He has no nuts. Just a hanger on and not man enuff to be the guy in charge. Typical jones boy, all talk and no substance. 2 wuss's go together well.
Garrett is a wuss. He isnt man enough to take a head job because he knows he couldnt handle it. Now he is just sitting around stabing Phillips in the back waiting for his job. He has the morals to fit right in with jones and also the lack of balls too.

jason"ball les" garrett.
Nice nickname and very fitting of him and what type of sack he has. Im sure he will be bending over for jones nightly from now on
Posted by "Bozo" the Wade @ 1:40 PM Thu, Jan 17, 2008
Jerry can't promise the HC job to Jason can he?...wouldn't that violate the Rooney rule of interviewing at least 1 minority?...anyways I'm glad our staff has both the "Red Ball Express" and the HC who should have a "Red Ball" for his nose.
Posted by J @ 1:50 PM Thu, Jan 17, 2008
Those two organizations are a mess, ATL. is a nightmare, and B'more is full of dessension, getting either of those two offenses off the ground is futile. Everyone knows phillips is just keeping the seat warn until garrett is seasoned enough. Nothing wrong with going on interviews and that whole process, im sure weve all done it. The media are jerk offs and like to make stries out of nothing. Cowboy Bill consider changing your name to player hater bill.
Posted by Bill In DC @ 1:54 PM Thu, Jan 17, 2008
I don't think he 'used' the Ravens or Falcons. Would it have been better to just tell them to F off and not interview?
I think he took an honest look at both and decided neither was a good place to be HC and I agree. Atlanta especially is a disaster, Baltimore (sad because they are the AFC team I root for) is a team on the decline and is going to have to go through some significant rebuilding in the next 3-5 years.
Jason will see far more success in Dallas than he will in Baltimore or Atlanta. Heck, he's pretty much 'co-coaching' or 'head coach - offense' now so what's the difference between that and being a HC somewhere else. If he gets some control over his assistants and in acquiring personnel (the groceries according to Bill P), then Dallas is a better situation for him. If Dallas is successful, he adds to his lustre, if it isn't the tendency will be to blame Phillips. Win-Win for him.
If he made all those visits predetermined to stay in Dallas, then yes, he used them. But, people do that all the time, its called business.
Posted by Bill In DC @ 2:29 PM Thu, Jan 17, 2008
Is it just me or does it seem like sportswriters in other cities are far more 'homer' about their teams than the ones in Dallas? I know the local sports announcers and most of the columnists in DC are big time homers for the Skins.

So, if Mike Preston believes the NFL owners will remember Garrett for taking advantage of the coaching situation, why wouldn't they feel that way about themselves. After all, Baltimore wouldn't have an NFL team for him to write about were it not for Art Modell stealing them away from Cleveland. Didn't the city of Baltimore take advantage of Cleveland's bad situation (as the city of Indianapolis did to Baltimore years earlier...?)
What a maroon!

First of all, this Preston dude has no concept of business. Second. It really shows that he's shallow minded, not even considering or knowing how Garrett actually felt about the Ravens organization and the opportunity it presented. He just plain and simple rushed to judgement in order to fuel his blog. Most of his own bloggers even told him he was wrong.
Posted by Bull_Shirt @ 7:39 PM Thu, Jan 17, 2008
*Laffin*......there are tons of blogs like this all over the internet.....I lmao at people talking trash on these, calling each other names, and getting plumb stupid and ignorant. Even so called "professionals" such as this idiot. Sounds like Preston got jilted at the altar or stood up on a date. Get a life dude. Garrett's got one and you can't have it.

see below for my reply to Preston:
....i read on dallasnews.com that you've been crying about jason garrett not taking the ravens head coaching job and that he used the ravens and perhap jerry jones for that matter for more money. stop you're crying. the truth is garrett wanted to see what was available to him and he entertained the idea of the head coach at baltimore and atlanta, as anyone should.
if you weigh the pros and cons of it, in baltimore he would inherit an old defense with suggs possibly gone to somewhere like new england, he would have crappy receivers and of course a crappy QB.
so would he rather be a head coach of a crappy team or an opportunity to be a head coach either next year or the following (plus match ravens head coach salary as the website indicates) of the cowboys with a lot of weapons, young defense, young receivers (outside of TO and glenn), two first round picks, a very good QB, plus be that head coach in a brand new stadium for the most expensive team in all of sports next to manchester united??
OR, go to dumpy baltimore (who left cleveland to be the ravens), where the only thing that is new is probably the stadium around there.
this was a no brainer decision for garrett. so stop your crying!!!!
