Do your part to keep Barber a Cowboy!

10:10 PM Thu, Jan 31, 2008 |
Tim MacMahon   E-mail   News tips

A diehard Cowboy fan started an online petition to prevent Marion "The Barbarian" Barber from being traded. I'm sure this will strongly influence Jerry's decision, so please sign your name.

Barber really won the fans over while running to the Pro Bowl this season. A hot debate topic last off-season on this here blog was whether Barber was a better back than Julius Jones.

I tried and tried to talk sense into folks, even breaking down Barber's carries to prove he wasn't just padding stats on third-and-long draw plays. Read the comments in the post linked in the previous sentence, and you'll see a fella who goes by DC Fanatic really ripping me for being so dumb to suggest that Barber should cut into Jones' carries.

DC Fanatic is the same dude who started the online petition, which he e-mailed to several media members. I figured it'd be great fun to give him a chance to officially reverse ground when I linked to his petition, so I replied to his e-mail. He replied with a heartfelt pat on my back that he posted on numerous online forums.

Appreciate it, pal. Let me know when that Keep Julius Jones petition gets online, and I'll be sure to link to it, too.

And the Epitaph to the tombstone reads "The Dallas Cowboys 2007 – 2008 Regular Season Champs and Post season Chumps"

Stewart and Phillips looked over matched this year. The Dallas Defense played under its talent value. If not for Jason Garrett's Offense outscoring many of the teams this year, the Dallas Cowboys could have easily been 10-6 or 9-7. Interesting enough when we stopped scoring we stopped winning. Wheres the "D"! Mr. Fix it was a Joke!

After a 21 play 90 or so yard drive by the Dallas Cowboys offense, the Dallas Cowboys defense with 30 seconds left in the first half and an 80 million dollar defense allowed the giants to drive 70 or so yards to score 7 points to end their season 21 - 17.

Please Dom Capers take the job, Brian Stewart and Wade Phillips non aggressive defense was a “Big Time Joke”.

PS The Barbarian isnt going anyware. Jerry Better Not let him GO!

No one needs to do that.. If Jerry trades Barber you better bet it will be for a great reason.. like a secret injury.. but he is not going anywhere.. Him and Felix Jones will be great or him and anyone of the backs coming out.. because all those backs are better than Julius Jones..

I WANTED TO GIVE MY 2 CENTS ABOUT JERRY , WADE, GARRETT, STEWART AND CAPERS

- For WADE.. he needs to remember that Garrett was signed first and anyone knows the history and promise of potential of Jason Garrett. So Wade should've thought about that before he signed.. he should've heard the arguing in Alex Spanos' Office with A.J. Smith and Schottemheimer than maybe he would've been the coach of San Diego.. I don't feel bad for Wade.. Here's his 2 yr chance at a Super Bowl since no one else would even interview him.. I like Wade but Wade knew what he stepped into when he signed on the dotted line.

About GARRETT - Jason did the right thing.. played it cool.. he knows in 2009 when the new stadium lights are Bright and it will be a big year for the Cowboys that he will be the Coach.. so much attention and fame.. and ah ah.. much more money too.. Jason is Smart.. Just like Josh McDaniels is waiting for the New England Job..

About BRIAN STEWART - Brian needs to be smart and realize that he wouldn't be a Def Coord no where else in the NFL.. he is in a real privilaged position right now.. Def Coord of the Dallas Cowboys.. Brian needs to sit and think.. Hey.. when Wade gets the hook So will I.. so I need to make the best of this situation.. and instead of Hating on Dom Capers that I should actually Learn more .. get as much knowledge out of him so when I do get the Hook.. Just maybe... MAYBE... I can become the next MIKE TOMLIN..!! He needs to sit and learn from Wade, Campo and Capers.. get in real good with Jerry .. so his resume looks great..

Look at Sparano.. who the heck was he before being associated with Bill Parcells.. and then he gets Interviews when no one but us knew who he was.. The Same can happen to Stewart if he plays it smart..

About Jerry.. - Jerry.. do what's best for this team.. get whatever great coach you can get.. Don't let loyalty cause this team to lose.. Like being LOYAL TO JACQUE REEVES , LIKE BEING LOYAL TO JULIUS JONES.. LIKE BEING LOYAL TO ROY WILLIAMS... Screw Loyalty.. get the Best on this team !! Screw Loyalty.. it's about Superbowls... never ever forget that. !!

About US FANS... - Hey everyone.. when we are playing Madden.. we don't care about the Salary Cap.. We get Mike Martz as the OC and the Ryan as the De Coord.. and Patriots coach as the Head Coach.. because we don't care.. we just want to win.. We have Moss and Owens and Chad Johnson on the team.. We don't care about Loyalty.. Hell if we could Trade Barber and Jones for LT or Adrian Peterson we would do it on the game..

Then we get on here and say our 2 cents... But lets keep everything in perspective.. This is real life with real money.. with a real Super Bowl trophy and a real Salary Cap where mistakes cost MILLIONS.. what we don't make in a life time..

Other than the Krafts.. Jerry has done a great Job in my book because I always think about the Cleveland Browns, Atlanta Falcons, New Orleans Saints, and many many other teams that haven't had a clue of the Success that Jerry has given this team.. Jerry has trusted some Straight LOSERS.. like Campo and Gailey.. what have they done since leaving.. Nothing..

I love being a Cowboy fan because even in 5-11 seasons it's more interesting them most playoff teams seasons...

DC- went to your site. Try as i might, couldn't get to comment. Maybe part of who you are?
As to who you are, I'm sure you'll vote for Romnney.
He's the only one who switches positions as often as you.
By the way, if you are going to attack a writer, at least learn to spell his name consistently..
Not that hard.
I saw that, even on your own site, you batted .500 or less on spelling the name of your enemy. Are you to be taken seriously?? Why??

Hey everyone, Tim's wife came on his blog to defend him, lol.

Who's Romnnnnnnnnnnnnnney?

What fool posts about someone else having a typo and in the same post has one of their own.

Ok Tim, you can tell the misses that I fixed the spelling now.

Shame that this blog has no edit feature and now this post will be here forever to let everyone know she spelled Romnnnnnnnney wrong, lol.

Trade our first pro bowl RB since the 1990s for a guy who hasn't played a down in the NFL. Makes sense. Is McFadden faster than MBIII? Sure.

So was Barry Sanders. Ask him or OJ Simpson, Herschel Walker, LaDainian Tomlinson, Tiki Barber, Reggie Bush, Brian Westbrook, Clinton Portis, Trung Canidate, Blair Thomas, Bo Jackson, Eric Dickerson or Chuck Muncie how they take care of their Super Bowl rings. Ask Archie Griffin about all his rushing titles. He was voted the best player in college football twice, he must have been a lock for a great career.

If every Cowboys fan in America saw this poll, it would be flooded by "signatures". You might have a few that fall in love with flash and dash, but most know what Barber is to this team and know how hard it is to replace what he brings to the table. You can't time heart and guts. You can't measure selflessness, dedication or character.

Keep MBIII. He's just about the best draft pick this team has had in the last 10 year outside of Ware.

ntouch,

The problems the Dallas D had last year were not due to bad coaching. They were due to bad secondary, specifically bad/undertalented CB. Over half the season Dallas was without their best CB TNew, he was never healthy in any game. Their #2 CB Henry was out for long stretches as well. Trying to have a 7th round CB play as your #2 for most of the season and, because of injuries, having to switch CBs from, left to right to slot and back does not bode well for consistent play and limits what a D Coordinator can do on defense. Let Dallas get another top cover corner, like Denver, Detroit, Washington, Philly, and a number of other teams have and see what the defense does. If they still struggle, then you can look at coaching.

There is a reason a CB lasts til the 7th round. They last that long because they have serious limitations. If they didn't, they'd be drafted long before the 7th.

You can pin that drive entirely on Reeves. That guy is absolutely useless. Here's the play by play from NFL.com.

1-10-NYG 29 (:47) (Shotgun) 10-E.Manning pass incomplete short right to 81-A.Toomer. Pass fell short at the NYG 41; Reeves closest.
2-10-NYG 29 (:42) (Shotgun) 10-E.Manning pass deep right to 12-S.Smith to DAL 49 for 22 yards (35-J.Reeves) [99-C.Canty]. Pass complete on fly pattern.
Timeout #2 by NYG at 00:34.
1-10-DAL 49 (:34) (Shotgun) 10-E.Manning pass short right to 12-S.Smith pushed ob at DAL 38 for 11 yards (35-J.Reeves). PENALTY on DAL-35-J.Reeves, Face Mask (15 Yards), 15 yards, enforced at DAL 38.
1-10-DAL 23 (:28) (Shotgun) 10-E.Manning pass incomplete deep middle to 17-P.Burress. Pass incomplete on a post pattern in the back of the end zone.
2-10-DAL 23 (:21) (Shotgun) 10-E.Manning pass incomplete short middle (99-C.Canty). Canty knocked down the pass at the line of scrimmage.
3-10-DAL 23 (:17) (Shotgun) 10-E.Manning pass short right to 89-K.Boss to DAL 4 for 19 yards (35-J.Reeves).
1-4-DAL 4 (:11) (Shotgun) 10-E.Manning pass short middle to 81-A.Toomer for 4 yards, TOUCHDOWN.

Posted by Jeff @ 7:15 AM Fri, Feb 01, 2008

Marion is a good, not great, back. If you want to win the SB you either need a great back and WR or a pair of great WR. We have neither. I ain't signing no petition. Frankly, Jones and co. have done a nice job putting this team together. I know less than him, so I defer to him. If he thinks D-Mac can be another E. Smith, lets go.

Posted by Dave @ 7:29 AM Fri, Feb 01, 2008

takeAlook,

What's the basis for that claim. I haven't noticed Barber having issues in Pass Protect. THe only time I've seen him struggle is when the O line screws up their blocking assignments and passes a DE into the backfield free. It is not resonable to expect the RB to pick up a DE on a consistent basis.

Vox,

You're right. Reeves was horrible in that series and that game. But he is a 7th round pick, so what else could you expect. Dallas gambled the last few years by not taking a CB any higher than the 7th. They paid the price for it. There is a reason a CB lasts til the 7th round, they have serious issues. If they didn't they'd be drafted higher. My one issue with Jerry and Parcells was this tendency to place low priority on CB. Parcells and Jerry bring in two older CBs, who are good, but limited to pair with TNew and do not draft a CB high (my God why didn't they take Cromartie last year?) to bring along so he would step in when Glenn and Henry are done. Instead they gamble on finding a pearl among 5 7th round CB over two years and none of them have panned out. Reeves is the best of the lot, but he has limitations. Why didn't we get someone else during the year? Well, because there was no one else that could come in off the street and play (even Pete Hunter was signed).

This leaves Jerry backed in to a corner (no pun intended). He has to spend big bucks now on a proven FA CB (Trufant, Samuels, Ashmouga) because he can't take a CB high an wait 2-3 years for him to develop. He needs that 2nd cover corner NOW.

Posted by Bill in DC @ 7:46 AM Fri, Feb 01, 2008

To answer my own question above

"My God, why didn't they take Cromartie last year?"

The answer is Rob Carpenter. Since Parcells drafted him in the first the previous year and he can't play in 3-4, Dallas had to take another OLB as the eventual replacement (or immediate replacement) for Ellis. He is a good pick and I think he'll be a really good OLB, but, because we had to take him, we were unable to take Cromartie.

Hopefully we make up for that and pick off his cousin(?) this year in the 2nd. Guy looked great in the Senior Bowl.

Posted by BlueZone @ 8:04 AM Fri, Feb 01, 2008

Barber is a great fit for the Cowboys, because he can find a place to run when there isn't any. Too bad the Cowboys offensive line can't run-block. If they could, Julius Jones would also be a terror.

I'm not suggesting we replace the OL, because they do a great job pass blocking... when they're not tired and worn down from the running game. But we could consider adding some OL help to rotate players to keep them fresh.

We could use a rocket deep threat WR to stretch the opposing defense so Romo can get back to the unstoppable passing-game plans Garrett had for the regular season.

We desperately need to shore up the defensive secondary. Hopefully we don't pass up the chance to get CB Dominique Rogers-Cromartie like we did with his cousin.

Barber's loss would be a tragedy. It's unlikely we could find another RB that could rack up yards without blocking. Darren MacFadden is a Julius Jones type runner and would explode to the line of scrimmage, crash into the non-hole and fall down. Look at his U-Tube videos. He's great in the open field and nobody can catch him from behind, but he can't break any tackles. Didn't see him doing any pass blocking either.

I think I overheard Jimmy tell Jerry (or was it BP?)
... "A fool and his Draft Picks are soon parted".

Too bad Coach Jerry wasn't listening.

Posted by Saint Jimmy @ 8:18 AM Fri, Feb 01, 2008

Tim, I just want to know why we should be listening to some dude that defended Julius Jones to the death? He was obviously wrong about JJ so why shouldn't he be wrong about keeping MB3? If anything we should be listening to me because once again I look prophetic.

I said that the dynamic of the running game shouldn't be changed...just tweaked due to how the game is being played out. I said way back in June that if MB3 is the starter then JJ isn't going to produce for squat and that the overall running game will suffer in the 4th quarter because of it.

What happened in the Giants game? MB3 started, JJ got like 8 yards on 4 carries, and MB3 gained about 15 yards in the 2nd half. Therefore we should have stuck to the plan all year long...start JJ to keep MB3 fresh for the 4th.

Posted by Bill in DC @ 8:27 AM Fri, Feb 01, 2008

Saintjimmy,

Barbers problem wasn't that he was tired in the 2nd half. The Giants made adjustments to their defensive scheme in the 2nd half that Dallas did not adjust to. They should have traken advantage of the Giants adjustments to stop the Dallas run by going wild in the passing game, but, for whatever reason, did not execute the passing game well (drops, bad route adjustments, etc). Terrible shame to hold a team to 67 yards in the 2nd half of a game and lose because of terrible special teams play and one 45 yard drive.

Posted by The Truth @ 8:32 AM Fri, Feb 01, 2008

Right on BlueZone, you nailed it.

Until our RUN BLOCKING improves DRAMATICALLY, read: not allow multiple guys in the backfield constantly on running plays, runners like McFadden, Bush, and Jones will be completely USELESS for US.

When we gave Barber and Jones holes this past year, they took advantage of them. But unfortunately, that did not happen all that often, see: less than once a game.

Without a guy like Barber, our running game WILL go to ..... "crap", unless Mr. Houck can FINALLY get this o-line to play to its potential.

(I HATED Sparano for not getting the line to play to their potential, but at least there is hope now.)

Barber >>>>>>>>> McFadden in the NFL, and ESPECIALLY in our Current Situation.

I'm amazed by his talent, but the injuries are a question. Could be a string of unrelated misfortunes. Could be a trend. I'm hoping he's as good in the long run as he was as a rookie because he's a good kid and a lot of fun to watch, but I wouldn't trade what could be a roster solidifying first round (can anyone say 'secondary') for him. And I'm sure 3 years from now we'll all be kicking ourselves that we didn't do it. Interesting hypothetical.

Posted by Ty @ 12:35 PM Fri, Feb 01, 2008

The Boys first and formost need to address resigning Flozel ,and especially Hamlin. Then turn their focus to getting a guy like Trufant or Samuel through FA. Then they need to make the deal for WR Roy Williams, and then just check to see how much it may take to get Pacman, all before their first draft pick. If they are able resign Flozel, and Hamlin, then they get a guy like Trufant or Samuel in FA, WR Roy Williams through trade, and Pacman only taking a 4th or 5th rounder to get, then we have addressed all issues and they can look at a trade for McFadden but I still don't think they have to trade for the number 1 overall pick to get him. But still even if they do all of the signing and trading, I would still stay where I am at and frist take Mckelvin or a WR and with the second pick take Mendanhall or Felix Jones. It would not hurt anyone to have 4 of the best CB on our team.

Posted by jimmy shaker @ 6:32 PM Fri, Feb 01, 2008

we need to keep barber, ditch jones and his wasted 5 carries a game and pick a speedster in the draft. check it out on http://crumsspace.blogspot.com/

Posted by MikeInUkraine Stevens @ 7:40 PM Fri, Feb 01, 2008

In any other draft I would say trade the 1st round picks and whoever to take a chance on McFadden. But in any other year it seems like there are far fewer good RB candidates. This draft looks loaded with good RBs before you ever get past the juniors into the seniors.

I have watched the McFadden youtube clps also and I agree he looks like he just runs through big holes un-touched with little neeed to wiggle and outruns everyone else to the house. In contrast I see lots of wiggle in Felix Jones' game.

That doesn't mean McFadden doesn't have some wiggle. Obviously I can only go by the clips I seen available. I also would say I never saw any evidence that DMac would fall down on first contact like Julius does too often. I saw a couple of nice stiff arms.

Having said all that I think its a good time to post the list I put up last July in the thread Tim referenced.

The ten biggest running back busts of all-time:

1. Ki-Jana Carter (#1 draft pick '95)
2. Blair Thomas (#2 draft pick '90)
3. Alonzo Highsmith (#3 draft pick '87)
4. Curtis Enis (#5 draft pick '98)
5. Lawrence Phillips (#6 draft pick '96)
6. Tim Worley (7th pick '89)
7. Tim Biakabutuka (8th pick 96)
8. Sammy Smith (9th pick 89)
9. Tommy Vardell (9th pick 92)
10. Rashaun Salaam (21st pick '1995)

Dis-Honorable mention:

Archie Griffin ('74 & 75 heisman winner)
Ron Dayne (11th pick '2000)
William Green (16th pick '2002)
John Avery (29th pick '98)
Bo Mathews (2nd pick 74)
Brent Fullwood (4th pick 87)
D.J. Dozier (1987)
Michael Haddix (1983)
Bubba Bean (1976)
Darrell Thompson (1990)
John Cappelletti (1974)
Vaughn Dunbar (1992)
Joe Profit (1971)
Terry Miller (1978)

Posted by Joe @ 9:46 PM Fri, Feb 01, 2008

Cowboys to do list:

1. Give contracts to Canty, Barber and Hamlin. I think if Flozell Adams is not willing to brek bank, sign a 3 year deal. If not, thanks.
2. Sign free agent Bryan Johnson or make trade for Roy Williams. Larry Fitzgerald would ne nice, but I say no dice. Bye Terry Glenn and thanks. Also sign a corner (Raiders guy?)
3. Draft a CB (need another), a RB (love Felix Jones), a WR return guy, another DL, OL, LB, and maybe QB

Posted by jtd86 @ 12:03 PM Sat, Feb 02, 2008

Joe, Good plan. I would add that if you can get Miami's second round pick for players and maybe a low round pick (6th), then add another RB on top of Felix Jones. Wouldn't Tuna want Carpenter, Ferguson, and Spears or Ellis for the 3-4? Then you can look at Ray Rice or Mendenhall if he falls. That gives you great depth in the backfield.

Posted by ntouch4u2 @ 4:16 PM Sat, Feb 02, 2008

Bill in DC,

I don’t know if you have ever played sports namely football before, however let me take the time to explain something to you as I played Div 1 football and was a middle linebacker who was responsible for making our defensive calls on the field;

The coach’s responsibility, as my coaches reiterated over and over is to coach conducively to the talent he has on the field and place those prospective players into proper position to achieve the best result by “DEFENSIVE SCHEME”. We had a whole season to watch Roy Williams and J. Reeves not only get burnt but get scorched week after week and nothing was done. What bailed us out this season was the Dallas Offense being able to score and score big and when the Dallas Offense stopped scoring it was suppose to be up to the Dallas Defense to make a stop and 30 seconds left in the 1st half ,you would think a defensive stop would have been possible. Eli Manning completed pass after pass and from what several million fans saw in that playoff game was the Dallas Cowboys Defense Coordinators failure to make any adjustments.

Thanks for the response fellow Cowboys fan, however your argument holds no weight. I thought I was over the game but I now see that I am still grieving. I have to watch the Giants going to what was supposed to be our Super Bowl Appearance. I can’t even look at kids playing Madden in Best Buy without getting upset. I guess I still am in the 5 stages of grief. It’s therapeutic to at least vent my spleen here.

I know we need another another CB, WR, Safety, Left OG, and a True NT 330 Plus....however, what we needed was not on the team in that playoff game, thus coach to the talent you have.

Posted by jtt @ 5:45 PM Sat, Feb 02, 2008

DC is right-on with our needs, but we do not need a NT, we already have three to choose from that seem above average players. We also need a back-up QB more so than a LG, there again we seem to have depth at that positon and none with Brad Johnson, he needs an arm replacement.

The biggest mistake re that debacle was the game plan on offense; the coaching staff kept hearing it from both the local media and and many on this blog on how "we had abandoned the running game" at the end of the season making us one dimensional and easy to defend. DC again is on the money, everyone loved this team not because of our vulnerable defense, but because Tony was throwing it every where at any time and scoring at an unprecedented levels.

So what do they come up with for NYG III? A Parcells grinding-it out game plan, hand cuffing Romo for most of the game......a QB has to develop rhythm for every single game, the coaching staff telegraphed something ominous to Romo, just manage the game and "will be OK" (An ELI type game plan).

THAT IS NOT HOW DALLAS EARNED THE #1 SEEDS YOU DUMMIES! When you account for the fact that our o-line was much more profficient at pass protecting that run blocking most of the seaon and the Giants secondary was hurting, trying to win a low scoring game was against us from the beginning, The Giants had to be gleeful at our approach (a game Eli can actually win).........Wade with his experiecne should have known better.........total let down and now Jerry has decided to become the Czar of Operations and "take things into his own hands once again .............

Not sure if anyone caught the special on the Craft dynasty last night (CNBC, investment channel), but they sure took their shots at Jerry without mentioning his name directly (meddlesome, personally involved with personnel decisions, side-line strutting owners).

NTouch,

I think you’re right on as well. I hate to say it but the Dallas Cowboys Defensive Coaching staff seemed to never correct the coverage problems that we had all year.

It just seems like Bill in dc is only repeating the obvious position needs that all Cowboys fans know that we need to address. No Startling revelation there.

I was always told that you can have the most talented players in the world, however if they are not put in the right position to win, what difference does it make.

Go Cowboys !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
