Don't take the Tuna's calls, Jerry!!!

1:39 PM Thu, Jan 24, 2008 |
Tim MacMahon   E-mail   News tips

The Dolphins have declared that they are willing to deal the No. 1 overall pick.

"We're open for business," new Miami GM Jeff Ireland said.

Cowboy fans, cross your fingers that Jerry doesn't let his lust for Arkansas RB Darren McFadden cloud his judgment. Whether or not you think D-Mac will be a gamebreaker in the NFL, the Cowboys would have to give up way too much to move to the top of the draft.

According to Jimmy Johnson's draft-pick value chart, the No. 1 pick has a value of 3,000. Nos. 22 (780) and 28 (660) don't even add up to half of that.

Jerry was kind enough to let Ireland go to Miami without seeking compensation. He's done enough for the Dolphins. No sense in letting Bill Parcells talk him into contributing a slew of draft picks to Miami's rebuilding efforts for the right to pick an RB who would split time here.

We need a new QB. Maybe we could offer Romo to the Dolphins for their No 1 pick and get QB Trent Green? That would be awesome! Green at QB with TO at WR and then handing the ball off to RB Darren McFadden. Can you spell SUPER BOWL!!

Posted by Johnny @ 2:02 PM Thu, Jan 24, 2008

Dallas could trade Romo, Barber, Roy Williams, Isaih Stanbeck and our two No 1's for that pick and Trent Green. Now, that would be a good trade.

Posted by Bill @ 2:04 PM Thu, Jan 24, 2008

Think we could trade QB Tony Romo to Cincinnat for QB Carson Palmer? They are about the same age, and Cincinnati and Palmer are at an impass with the contract. I think Romo is going to go down hill from here. He is full of himself and girl crazy. His value is the highest it will be right now.

Palmer needs a new team and he's better than Romo. Can't we make that trade? Why not??

Posted by Dave @ 2:06 PM Thu, Jan 24, 2008

The value for Miami is the first pick in the second round, they can deal that pick for a bunch of picks, there is always a good player that slips out of the first round into to the second round, so I suspect they can begin rebuiding the Dolphins with that pick, no way is it worth trading up to the first overall pick in the draft, especially for a chicken leg running back who is marginally better than Julius Jones, he also falls down when his leg is touched, been there, seen that, next!!!!!!!!

Posted by Kevin @ 2:09 PM Thu, Jan 24, 2008

Stop with the trade Romo stuff -- you just handed him a $67M contract and he's yours for awhile.

As for RB, Barber is the starter, and we can't realistically pay two backs. Pick one on the first day of the draft.

Posted by S L @ 2:09 PM Thu, Jan 24, 2008

Given that both sides of this group are responsible for more than a couple past Cowboys drafts, I don't think there's any real concern for either side getting the goods on the other in any trade for any pick. In other words, neither of these brain trusts are exactly in their sweet spots when it comes to this type of maneuver. And neither ego could ever allow the potential stink of being on the wrong side to even be a possibility.

The draft is a snooze fest so far, no one is going to want to pay top dollar for a name that isn't even in the news now, let alone hasn't become a consensus number one yet.

Posted by brian maxx @ 2:09 PM Thu, Jan 24, 2008

bout time, someone went to the chart. me and probably a bunch of others expected you bloggers to have it up now for days, instead of boring coaching rumors.

If you guys think about the actual GAME of football and the fun things like draft speculation and FA what-ifs basically people will be more entertained. i would.

basically the cowboys can move up to #7 or 8 with their two firsts and something to sweeten the pot.

seems like with two firsts, second, and third they could get to say get to 4th overall. then trade down if McFadden falls a bit. trading all that isn't going to happen.

If Jerry wants McFadden, he could get him, but who in FA is going to be a fast, reliable back? I say go after #7 or 8 pick and roll dice on a RB or another monster pass rusher or linebacker. or trade down again and see what happens.

Posted by Chris Berman's Colon @ 2:10 PM Thu, Jan 24, 2008

McFadden will not go #1 (unless Jones does it), even if he is the top graded player. Dorsey, the two Longs and Ryan should go before him. Wait for one of the stud backs to fall to you at 22 or 28. Too many needs to fill to reach for McFadden.

Posted by Johnny @ 2:19 PM Thu, Jan 24, 2008

We have to trade Romo to get the No 1 pick. And, we should do it. He is not interested in football. He's going down hill man. Trade him. He don't want to play football. He's a rock star wannabe.

Posted by RAMS FAN @ 2:20 PM Thu, Jan 24, 2008

WHAT YOU COW-VOMITS OUGHT TO WORRY ABOUT IS THE RAMS AND THERE SPECTACULAR OFF SESON WORKOUTS. STEVEN JACKSON HAS NEVER LOOKED BETTER AND MARC BULGER IS BACK TO HIS SUPERBOWL WINNING WAYS. YOU BLEW IT COW-CRAPPERS. DO YOU KNOW THIS MEAANS? I WILL TELL YOU WHAT THIS MEANS,,,
SCOREBOARD RAMS!

Posted by Teddy @ 2:21 PM Thu, Jan 24, 2008

A Herschel Walker type of trade? No. Jones knows that better. If Dallas just needs a great running back to win a super bowl, he might do that. But Dallas has pro bowler running back on the roster. Few experts believe McFadden will be picked #1. Some experts even thingk McFadden should not be even in the first round and the other running back on the Arkansas team is actually better.

Tuna looked to use the #1 pick to fill their house. I think they had better to make multiple trades to get more picks.

Posted by brian maxx @ 2:22 PM Thu, Jan 24, 2008

if dallas was still playing i'd say trade down and pick up better role players. couple extra second and thirds could help the lines and LBs of the future. they have a lot of good talent, outside of CBs. That didn't work out. but they obviously need a real stud MLB (real stud), CB, WR, and a speedy, reliable backup RB. dallas needs another homerun hitter RB, CB, AND LB.

That sounds like FA to me.

Maybe someone can blog on which FAs are going to be out there. Someone could make a big list instead of waiting for ESPN to do it. :) would be nice.

Jerry should look to do another trade like when he sent Tony Dorsett to the Vikings for all those draft picks and we built the team of the 90's off of that steal. Then we can draft Bryant Mcfadden or anybody else that suits our fancy.

Posted by dan @ 2:55 PM Thu, Jan 24, 2008

the rams are about as lively as thier owner,

Posted by Playoff Win or Bust @ 3:01 PM Thu, Jan 24, 2008

tony d to the vikes? bryant mcfadden?

are you really a football fan...

Posted by BamBam @ 3:12 PM Thu, Jan 24, 2008

Two points:

1) I'd rather trade up to 15-18 or so and get Mendenhall. Although, if McFadden falls to 6-7, it might be worth it to go up.

2) Jimmy Johnson's chart was designed in the days before the salary cap. In today's world, I think the number 1 pick is less valuable, on average, relative to later first round picks.

How many times must you fail at life to wind up passing your day posting "analysis" in blog comments as to which players/positions a pro football team should pursue? Just curious...

Posted by ***The*Best*Cowboy*Fan*Ever*** @ 3:29 PM Thu, Jan 24, 2008

that's really insulting "Playoff Win Or Bust"!!!...what kind of stupid name is that BTW?...the Cowboys had a great year @ 13-3 and made the final 8!!!...coach Wayne even said so!!!yeah, TD to the Vikes for all those draft picks...everybody here knows it...I was heart-broken at the time because I used to watch him at Penn St. when I went there...but it ultimately turned around the Cowboys' fortunes...

Posted by youheardithere1st @ 4:17 PM Thu, Jan 24, 2008

unsubstantiated rumor of the day:

3 way trade between Dallas, Miami, and Cleveland.

Cleveland gives up Derek Anderson and recieves the 'Boys pick #26.

Miami gives up it's #1 overall pick and gets Anderson and the Cowboys other 1st rd. pick (via Cleveland)

Dallas gives up it's both it's 1st rounders for the #1 overall pick.

Cleveland gets back into the first round and elevates Quinn to starter. Miami gets its QB and still gets a 1st rounder in the 20's. Dallas gets to satisfy it's man-crush on Mcfadden. Win, Win, Win.

Give them Bobby carpenter, a third rounder, and a thank you for cherry picking our staff you big fat quitter the tuna. Imagine, if parcells hadn't been so stubborn and opened up the offense with TO against Seattle's Loan officers(I mean DBs).

Posted by DougO @ 7:32 PM Thu, Jan 24, 2008

Jerry, take anything you can get for Bobby Carpenter, even if it's the rights to Ricky Willams. He might make a nice change of pace back.

Posted by aaronjewl @ 10:57 PM Thu, Jan 24, 2008

hate to blow the jimmy myth. but jimmy didn't design that.

Posted by Mark @ 2:16 AM Fri, Jan 25, 2008

Yeah, let's get the 2008 season off to a piss poor start by trading away all of our day one picks & a player or two for a RB!

I agree with the above statement. Three wisely chosen players in the top 65 will benefit this team more.

Posted by Jesse @ 1:52 PM Fri, Jan 25, 2008

What's wrong with you guys? Romo is going to be good. This was his first full year starting. Manning didn't win the big one until last year.

Posted by Jeff @ 3:19 PM Fri, Jan 25, 2008

Johnny, you're out of your mind. Trade Romo? After he breaks a handful of all-time Cowboys passing records? You're an idiot. You too, Bill. Carson Palmer is not better than Romo--he's a streaky QB. Everybody forgets that this was Romo's first full year starting: We went 13-3 and Romo did not lose that playoff game for us. If anything Romo's brilliance has set the bar so ridiculously high that toolsheds like you guys call for his head when he's not immediately Tom Brady.

psssst....idiots, johnny and bill are the same guy...posting non-sensical stuff to see how many dopes will react...apparently plenty

Posted by Bill @ 2:09 PM Sun, Jan 27, 2008

I SWEAR IT EMBARRASSES ME TO BE A COWBOYS FAN SOMETIMES. ANYONE THAT SAYS TO TRADE ROMO IS AN IDIOT AND KNOWS NOTHING ABOUT FOOTBALL. WE'VE SPENT THE LAST 9 YEARS FINDING THE HEIR APPARENT FOR AIKMAN AND WHEN FIND HIM YOU WANT TO TRADE HIM???? YOU ARE AN IDIOT.

EVERYONE'S CRUCIFIEING HIM FOR HIS LACK OF PRODUCTION IN THE LAST 2 MONTHS BUT HAVE NO IDEA WHY HIS PRODUCTION WENT DOWN. FIRST AND FOREMOST LOOK AT THE OFFENSIVE LINE....LOOK AT THE LACK OF RUNNING GAME AND THE PRESSURE HE'S UNDER. STOP JUST WATCHING THE GUY WITH THE FOOTBALL AND WATCH THE BLOCKING.

DO YOU HONESTLY THINK WE COULD WIN 13 GAMES WITH QUINCY, VINNIE, DREW OR EVEN ELI? IF YOU DO YOU ARE A TRUE IDIOT. KEEP WATCHING FOOTBALL BUT PLEASE DON'T COMMENT BECAUSE YOURE AND IDDIOT AND IT SHOWS WHEN YOU SPEAK.

IF YOU WANT TO TRADE PARCELLS SOMETHING, TRADE HIM JULIUS JONES, MARCUS SPEARS, BOBBY CARPENTER, AND EITHER BRADY JAMES OR AKIN AYODELE. HE LOVED THESE GUYS AND OBVIOUSLY WOULD BE HAPPY TO TAKE THEM BACK

Posted by J. Carpenter @ 2:48 PM Mon, Jan 28, 2008

This just in: Johnson's much-ballyhooed "value chart"
became obsolete when the salary cap era began.

No G.M. in his right mind today bases the values of trades on an arbitrary assignment of numbers based on
draft position.

For a team like Miami who has multiple needs and whose G.M. has a philosophy that only a "franchise quarterback" is worth taking with the #1 pick, the pick is only worth what a buyer is willing to give.

The first pick in and of itself is only an asset to them for exchanging it for multiple picks that can be had within the framework of its salary cap.

Parcells clearly wants out of that spot. Miami has a very capable running back in Ronnie Brown, Glen Dorsey would become a high-priced nose guard in Sparano's 3-4, and Long does not remind anyone of Bruce Smith or Reggie White.

The bottom line is, Miami is stuck and may have to sell short--meaning even if the pick won't bring
the theoretical 3,000 points as long as Parcells can parlay that pick into numerous picks, he won't care.

For example, when Parcells managed the draft his first season with the Jets he traded out of the #1
spot (Orlando Pace=3000)to acquire seven players for a value of about 2,000 points. But the numbers hardly tell the whole story. Orlando Pace is on his way to the Hall of Fame and the players Parcells took are footnotes in NFL draft history.

The moral: clearly all #1 picks are not created
equal. Steve Entman and Bruce Smith were both #1's.
Anyone think they were both worth 3,000 points?

How about John Elway and Jeff George?

Rest assured, Parcells and Ireland are doing fantasy football "bean counting" . They have the misfortune of being in a draft position where no player is that attractive to them and they will be forced to sell short while trying to maximize the picks they can acquire by parlaying their one first-round pick into multiple selections.

Posted by zac940 @ 4:24 PM Mon, Jan 28, 2008

You are crazy if you want to trade Tony Romo!!!! See the years 2001-2005. I think Drew Henson and Chad Hutchinson are still availbale. LOL! Tony Romo is the best thing that has happened this year.

Posted by ray @ 1:33 AM Tue, Jan 29, 2008

Yeah, I do believe McFadden is all that but trading for the #1 pick is too costly. This draft is heavy with CB, RB and WR especially in the 1-3 rounds. Of course Dallas has some players to throw out there for trade bait (Spears, Carpenter and even Crayton) that might give us another pick or two in the 2nd and 3rd rounds.

Posted by AARON @ 2:58 AM Tue, Jan 29, 2008

You people disgust me. This blog should be filtered for manuer. Trade Romo???? "He's going to be good"???? Absolute idiots.

He already is very, very good. He's going to be great.

And people wonder why atheletes become A-holes and blow off people for autographs and such. It's because most people are MORONS and want to trade them away at a moments notice.

Posted by Michael @ 7:45 AM Tue, Jan 29, 2008

I think Jerry will trade...DOWN. I believe that he'll use the Cleveland pick to take a DB and trade the second First for a couple of later round picks. I know it's not 'Bright Lights, Big City' to trade down, but I think Jerry's realized that that is the best strategy when your picks are in the 20's. It happens to be so because the talent differential between the 20th pick in the draft and the 60th is only a sliver.

Posted by Vix @ 12:20 PM Thu, Jan 31, 2008

Trade up/trade down. It all depends on depth at positions of needs. Right now, it looks like we can grab a CB and WR where we sit, or, possibly even lower. Leave the marquis guys alone. They're a crapshoot anyway.
And, don't forget the X factor...JJ was thinking he'd get McFadden for those two picks. Probably had his heart set on it. If he can still get that pick - he does it in a heartbeat.

I have read some interesting comments made by some Dallas fans. I can't believe you would want to trade Romo and want to take Green as your starter. Being a Dolfan, I would be very happy having Romo as our QB. Your team is built to win now and if Jones believes McFadden is another Adrian Peterson I don't see the mistake. Can you imagine if McFadden runs like AP. Romo will have a field day finding T. Owens open when the Safeties have to come up to stop the run. We (Dolphins) don't need Barber having Brown, Williams, Booker, Chatman (probably), Booker. Just remember a fair trade is something both sides feel uncomfortable trading but is logical to both sides.
