If there's one thing I know for certain, it's that it's never too early for mock drafts. Anyone who follows this stuff like I do knows that the first projections for 2008 were out with the 2007 draft barely in the books, so saying it's too early for these is not knowing the times. And with that in mind, I thought we'd take a look at the early guesses from two of the best in the business, the ESPN duo of Todd McShay and Mel Kiper Jr. (Insider subscription required). Kiper has the Cowboys going all Big Ten on everyone with Michigan WR Mario Manningham and Illinois RB Rashard Mendenhall plucked at 22 and 28 respectively. As most of you know, I watch a lot of Big Ten football, and while I'll tell you that while I'm a little lukewarm on Manningham (though the history of Michigan receivers in the pros is fairly strong with Braylon Edwards, Amani Toomer and Anthony Carter three big-time alums), I think Mendenhall is going to be an absolute stud. His computer numbers won't jump off the page, but the kid can really play. McShay's mock, meanwhile, also has the Cowboys taking Manningham at 22, and then selecting Troy CB Leodis McKelvin (who I'm going to study up on) with their second pick. That seems more realistic than Timmy Tabloid's provincial pick of Aqib Talib -- anyone else notice how all three of his guys were Big 12 products that grew up in Texas? -- since the Kansas CB's gonna be long gone by the time Dallas picks. Kiper has him going seventh to the Patriots, and McShay slots him 15th to the Lions. |

Maybe it's just me, since I've watch Manningham destroy my team for years (Wisconsin), but I'd be thrilled to see him in silver and blue.

where's Trey Brown in your draft? He might be a nice 2nd day pick up that could actually fill a big need and provide some depth.

you have no idea what the cowboys really need is draft a good reciever who contrasts owens. I like a adrian arrington from michigan. or even a roy williams from detriot. barber proved he can carry the ball 20 times against the giants and who says you need a change of speed back the cowboys have never been like that untill we had two decent backs. we need another safty as well send roy willilams packing and take a chance at paceman then you can stick henery at the safty spot.

Albert, I was thinking the same thing about Timmy's projections. I seriously question how he keeps his job when you continually outshine on a daily basis.
Between Jessica Simpson posts (which he knows people hate) and useless, inaccurate information about any and all Texas high school football, he brings nearly nothing to the table.
You were the MVP, best off-season addition, best special teamer, etc of this here post this year.

how can he be an off-season addition when he joined in the middle of it?

Jerry should be more focused on the other Arkansas running back, who would be the perfect compliment to Barber.

I like the Troy product, Leodis McKelvin, but with the Senior Bowl practices as any sign, he also might be long gone by the time Dallas picks. I like Mike Jenkins from South Florida and Antoine Cason from Arizona in the first, coupled with either Mendenhall or Felix Jones. Then in the second, take a kid like Devin Thomas from Michigan St.

Manningham is the one we need, Rashard is a good adddition if not the Ark (RB). Then we need a corner or thru free agency. Still want mike Turner from SD.

hey Albert Breer...who do you think the mighty Redskins will draft on the heels of their billiant coaching hire of Jim Fassel?...do you think we can get a QB as good as Theisman or a RB as good as Riggo?...
Posted by gerald @ 2:53 PM Thu, Jan 24, 2008
Albert, if you watch a lot of big 10 football, you must be bored to death. As for Tabloid Timmy's picks, why not? There are guys every year who fall below where they're projected (B. Quinn, anyone?)who might be available. And remember, MANY teams draft based on need, not the best available.

I like the Leodis Mckelvin pick, prototypical CB 5/11 190 4.4 speed and hes also an excellent return guy but you should be able to get him at 29. I would go with a RB at 22 and if Felix Jones is there take him if not WR with size and speed, i like the Manningham pick, i would take Limas Sweed and Malcolm Kelly if they were available, Adarius Bowman, DJ Hall or Andre Cauldwell would be nice 2nd round picsk

Hey, Redskins_Rule, Actually, I think both Theisman &
Riggs are still available(?) They're probably your best shot at the Glory Days now that Gibbs is gone.

I like a really god "D" backfirst and then Mendenhall who looks like a real horse. The idea of the "Barbarian and Mendenhall on the same team is almost as good as a bowl of seafood gumbo from Jr. Seau's restaurant in San Diego

Obviously the Boy's need to draft OLB with their first round picks! As earlier pointed out CAPTCHA SUCKSA

McKelvin is SO moving up the draft board: he's a top-10 / top-15 pick. I think Mendenhall will be gone, too (at 15 to the Bears?); otherwise, I'd be stoked if we drafted him. I'm all for trading a first to the Lions for Roy Williams, but I'm not sure Jerry will pull the trigger on that one.
1a. Pick #22 will be traded because Jerry always trades it: see 2a.
1b. Ark RB Felix Jones
2a. Tennessee State CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie
2b. California WR Lavelle Hawkins
3. Iowa CB Charles Godfrey
4. Iowa State NT Ahtyba Rubin
5. South Carolina RB Cory Body
6. Georgia G/C Fernando Velasco
7. Nebraska CB Zack Bowman

Have you ever taken a look at a mock draft and the real draft the mock is always totally wrong in 06 no mock predicted mario williams as a first pick so dont guess just hope the players the cowboys pick can play in the nfl.Besides who would of thought that bradshaw and smith would be helping the giants so much this year they didnt even so up on any mock drafts and they are two of the best rookies this year

How about Andra Caldwell from Florida? He broke or tied the Gator's record for career/season pass receptions and did return kicks. 'Boys could sure use a punt returner that would give Tony a shorter field to work with than 'fair catch' Crayton.

OK Children, Manningham is not even the best receiver from Michigan this year and his hands are suspect ...... but based on the Senior Bowl and no Combine here it goes ......
1a. Jonathan Stewart (RB)
1b. Dominque Rodgers Cromartie (CB)
2. Lavell Edwards (WR)
3. Carl Nicks (OT/OG)
4. Red Bryant(DT)
5. John David Booty (QB)

J jones is history in cowboy land, T glenn is about 68% out the door. The Cowboys will replace Jones in free agency and picking up a # 2 or even 3 wideout in the first round is unlikely. They played great with out him all season. Next years wideouts projects to be much deeper. Picks will be packaged to move up in the first round. Look for them to try and take the safety that appeals to them after the combine. Plus Roy Williams will make a super player off the bench and add depth. Look at New England and the players they bring in after other teams have lost faith.
