Early returns on '07 draft class

Albert Breer   E-mail   News tips

Our own Hall of Fame draft guru Rick "Goose" Gosselin has his evaluation of the 2007 draft class up, and he gave the Cowboys a "C" for their work last April.

Harsh? At the one-year turn, he's got good reason to be, but lightens up on the "D" he gave Dallas last spring.

Sixth-round kicker Nick Folk saved this draft class, kicking 26 field goals and finishing fourth in the NFL in scoring. LB Anthony Spencer and FB Deon Anderson combined for 10 starts, but that was it for the rest of this draft class.

One thing to keep in mind here is that this class was, in large part, "redshirted", so there's a big, fat incomplete hovering over it.

Third-round pick James Marten was inactive for every game. Fourth-round pick Doug Free only dressed for the season finale in D.C. And another fourth-round pick, Isaiah Stanback, was on the game-day roster just three times as he went through a position change, from college quarterback to pro receiver.

At the end of the season, all eight draftees were on the 53-man roster, except for Anderson, who was on IR. K Nick Folk, obviously, had an impact, as did FB Deon Anderson (a sixth-rounder and part-time starter before going to IR) and OLB Anthony Spencer, who showed signs that he'll be a top-flight player when his time comes. Plus, there's the matter of tying in this year's additional first-rounder (22nd overall) to last year's class.

So Goose's grade of a "C" seems dead on for now, since there's a lot "We'll see" still surrounding this group.

Is this the same Goose who lauded the Eagles for drafting Jeremy Bloom and "redshirting" him?

Posted by texicanstar @ 12:17 PM Fri, Jan 25, 2008

Sorry, but Goose holds no credibility with me...none at all...

Posted by Bwdyrd @ 12:21 PM Fri, Jan 25, 2008

Seems like to me that it would still be an imcomplete. Free was doing great during preseason at Left tackle. He had to go up against Freeny when we played the Colts in Preseason. He got hurt just at the start of the regular season. So, the jury is still out on him and Stanback.

Stanback was still rehabbing from his surgery. So, he missed all of the preseason. But, I can live with the C....there just appears to be more upside to me. Plus, I am still waiting to hear Breer's take on Justin Rogers that we stole from the Patriots!

what grade did Tim Burns give this draft class?...that's the one I will give credence to...

Posted by Bill In DC @ 12:33 PM Fri, Jan 25, 2008

I think it is ludicrous to use the 'games started' as a criteria. This automatically says a team with good players already in place will get a bad grade and teams that basically suck, like the Redskins and Rams, get a 'good' grade because the players they draft don't have anyone in front of them who can play.

Besides, isn't the drafting of young talent supposed to be the legacy of 'Genius' Parcells? So how can you have it both ways, we're done because Bill isn't here to run the draft and our drafts under Bill sucked?

You can't really judge a draft until 3 years out.
3rd try

Goose has ZERO credibility...

He called Reid a genius for "redshirting” a couple of players. Will someone please ask Goose where those players are now????

Posted by williamC @ 2:04 PM Fri, Jan 25, 2008

The other posters are correct:

GOOSE HAS ZERO CREDIBILITY SO NO ONE CARES WHAT HE THINKS.

Bill in DC, totally correct, and so are you Breer with the "redshirted" comment.

When a team has good players in place, the draft choices have to wait 2, 3 years to start, so if you just go by 1st year results, of course it will look like a bad draft. Stanback, Free, Mertin, Brown, Ball, all have excellent potential, but they were not brought in with the idea they would contribute their first year over the players already in place in their positions.

Posted by Donovan @ 2:50 PM Fri, Jan 25, 2008

Skimming over the teams that have good grades, average grades and poor grades, the comments on why he rated each the way he did seem to be based mostly on number of games started/played by the rookie class.

This is flawed logic. A deep team could have talent in the draft, but they'll have a hard time going from college to being a starter on a stocked team. Atlanta's draft got an A, because their veterans stink, so they had to play their rookies alot....

I have to agree with Goose because this year's draft class didn't play much AND mostly because we had problems at WR and DB that were not addressed in the draft. Drafting Anthony Spencer was like burying Bobby Carpenter. This is where I wonder about Jerry as a GM.

He even said himself that the WR position is tough on a rookie because it takes them time to come in and learn the system. Well, it'll be tough on whoever we draft this year.

Does Jerry know how old T.O. and Terry Glenn are? Did anybody tell Jerry that he had drafted Bobby Carpenter to play OLB? Did anybody tell him that we had problems is the secondary?

It makes no sense to me. It seems like Jerry loves Roy Williams and is willing to ignore whatever problems he has on the field and yet is totally unwilling to give Bobby Carpenter even close to the same opportunity to prove himself.

All this "grade" stuff means absolutely NOTHING.

"OLB Anthony Spencer, who showed signs that he'll be a top-flight player when his time comes"

Say what?

What did Spencer do at ALL to show he will be a "top-flight" player? He wasn't even "good" with BOTH Ware and Ellis on the field, so scratch that comment altogether.

He may become a Good Player, maybe, but top-flight? As of now, he is AT MOST two steps above Carpenter, but that's not saying much either.

I like the "Fake Goose" on The Ticket more than the real Goose...

GOOSE HAS ZERO CREDIBILITY SO NO ONE CARES WHAT HE THINKS. I am tired of him going out of his way to NOT come across as a homer for the 'boys. He picked Crosby from GB as his rookie kicker instead of pro bowl bound Folk from the 'boys. I guess the rest of the world is wrong and he is right. Geeez! What a loser! I am sick and tired of writers like him (Skip Bayless anyone?)I am under some weird perseption that pro writers should have an unbiased opinion. Shows what I know.

Posted by CAPITOLofTEXAS @ 9:12 PM Fri, Jan 25, 2008

To add on, the Goose only takes in consideration the # of games started by rookies to decide if it was a good draft. WTF!. Prime example Miami. With thier first pick at #9 they choose Ted Ginn Jr. who was 9th in recieving yards for rookies after being the 2nd WR drafted. Then they started rookie QB Jon Beck (1 TD, 3 int, 62 passer rating in 5 games played) Does anyone feel that they missed out on getting him? Didn't think so. And what about that new sensation at RB, Lorenzo Booker? A whopping 125 yards in 7 games. And what about C Samson Satele who anchored an O-Line that alowwed 42 Sacks? And then there is FB Reagan Mauia with his 5 yards rushing on 4 attempts , 5 yards recieving on 2 completions, which gives us a total of 1.66 yards per touch with 1 fumble giving him a 10% chance of turning the ball over while playing in ALL 16 games! And the Goose gave this team an A for their draft class. NONE of these players would have set foot on the feild for any of the final 8 teams in the playoffs. How in the world did the Goose get the job as an NFL writer I will never know.

Keep in mind that Goose flew south from Michigan (his home state) and that old habits die hard, as in ripping the home team -- let's all be honest, would watching and rooting for the Lions during your growing up years have warped your personality and ability to deal with matters of football?

Goose needs to get off JJs pole. He ranked the Bills (Edwards, Lynch and Posluzny) the same as the Cowboys (Folk, ?). This is a farce.

The Truth,

Much wisdom on your comments, I think the tackles do have upside based on the Dallas media reports (do they know anything?) and drafting Folk is huge after struggling without a kicker for years; however, he does need to improve the length on kick-offs.

The Spencer pick was really curious in light of the DB weaknesses and agree that he is certainly no Ware or Merriman, McIntosh, you name them who started right away and proved their value.....we will know just how good/bad that pick was this coming year......Stanback is a project and who knows if he will ever workout....we do not really know if he truly really wants to play wide receiver, but of course will never know that as well.

The coming draft will be an accurate barometer of "Jerry Drafts Part II"..........hoping he doesn't pull a Herschell in reverse trying to land McFadden, if he engineers that .........I will desperately need Dr Phil's care as well!!!
