Jamison Hensely of the Baltimore Sun, the man on the scene by team headquarters, is reporting that Cowboys offensive coordinator Jason Garrett has left the Ravens complex without taking the Ravens head coaching offer. It has been communicated to Garrett by Dallas owner/GM Jerry Jones that the Cowboys are prepared to match the financial terms of any offer made to their OC. Garrett is believed to be off to Atlanta for a second interview with the Falcons, who just hired Patriots director of college scouting Thomas Dimitroff as their GM. "It's been a good day, but I'm going to continue on with the process," Garrett told the Sun. |

Yay!!!! There's still hope for the Cowboys franchise!!

wise man this Garrett is...earning the same paycheck as being a HC with 1/2 the headaches he is...then become Jedi Master when House of Jerry opens in 2009 me thinks...

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the 'process' such that if you turn down offers to interview for head coaching jobs then in the future those opportunities may be diminished?
He may just be going thru the motions with no intent on leaving Dallas.
Posted by Chris @ 4:36 PM Tue, Jan 15, 2008
Dallas, sit back take a breath and find out what is really happening. Garrett is a smart young Offensive Coordintor who is in demand, let him finish his interviews before we burn and bury him. He is a Cowboy.

Yo PacMan... Atlanta's clubs have nothing on the fine ladies of Dallas

Jason Garrett is a fine young man..with a lot of talent..in the future there will be far better situations for him to consider then the Ravens or the Falcons...if Mr Phillips doesnt find some way to infuse some character into this team maybe it will be working for Mr. Jones at the end of next year...

I see Jerrah working...give Garrett more than Wade...Wade feels insulted and pride will not let him stay on as HC with a coordinator making more...Wade steps down...Jerrah acts all perplexed but "moves on" and now has his HC w/out having to fire anybody and be the bad/impulsive guy...and Baltimore and Atlanta sets his price for his HC w/out any negotiations needed...

SOMEONE, ANYONE,
AND I AM VERY SERIOUS,
PLEASE EXPLAIN TO MY STUPID BRAIN, WHAT IS THIS FASCINATION WITH JASON GARRETT.
THIS MAN HAS NOTHING ON HIS RESUME TO SUGGEST HE WILL BE A GOOD HEAD COACH AND YET TEAMS ARE TRIPPING OVER EACH OTHER TO HIRE HIM.
I JUST DONT GET IT. HELL, HE WAS NOT EVEN A GOOD OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR HERE THE LAST 1/3 OF THE SEASON, CAPPED OFF BY A TERRIBLE JOB SUNDAY.
SERIOUSLY, EXPLAIN TO MY WHY HE IS SUCH A GREAT HEAD COACHING CANDIDATE. I DONT GET IT.

Alright all you knotheads who have been badmouthing Garrett for leaving. Can you blame a man for listening to offers and wanting to improve. I can't blame him because it is what you call ambition. Some of you may not have ambition since you are on the computer all day typing blogs.

Guys, it's obvious hear. Garrett is in a very perfect position just coming in as OC and succeeding. He has to go through the motions to accommodate graciously. At the sametime, this increases the financial leverage against Jerry. Now, having foresight on this, I'm sure Jerry has an insurance policy in case of such a situation to equalize the highest offer Garrett would obtain and/or if he were to depart. Either way, Jerry and Jason wins.
This will be what happens. Jason goes through all the interviews. Highest offer is presented to Jerry. Jerry says, "no problem, considered it matched", and he cashes the insurance policy paying the difference to Garrett, pocketing the profit, and we roll once again toward another challenge. Sparano leaves...good riddance. We really need someone to handle the DC duties such as who they have with the Ravens, or even Billick.
Either way, it gets interesting.

Why should Jones tell Phillips how much Garrett will make? Why should Wade Phillips resign if Garrett makes more money? That is illogical.
By the way, the defense problem was not really solved. If Phillips indeed resigns, then either current defense coordinator can do the job or the former Ravens defense coordinator can do the job, maybe better.
Wade is a glorified defense coordinator anyway. He does not contribute to the offense game planning anyway. It is not like Parcells who dictated every aspect of the game planning. Parcells usually called the offense plays during game though his background is in defense. Phillips, on the other hand, leaves the offense alone to the offense coaches.

I'm with you tally,
I dont get it either,
this guy was a QB coach in Miami for 2-years, and has now completed one year as an offensive coordinator with very mixed reviews.
He was good with an all-pro offense the early part of the season but hell, I could have called plays for that offense and looked like a genius.
Then, it would appear, the league caught up with him and he was less than steller the last part of the season and called nothing short of a bad game last sunday. I am not sure I even want the guy back.
so I agree. I really dont know why he is such a hot item. His resume, as you say, just includes nothing to suggest he will be a good head coach.
Posted by RJS @ 4:59 PM Tue, Jan 15, 2008
I just have a gut feeling that Garrett isn't quite ready to be an HC, neither here or for any other NFL team.
I truely believe he'd be better staying in Dallas, spending another year as OC (perhaps as assistant HC if Sparano goes) and then take over from Wade for 2009, especially if Jerry takes care of him financially.
As for going thru the process, Garrett's wise to take the interviews elsewhere, whatever his ultimate intentions are. You can't fault him for that.

Posted by Clayton Holmes' Red Bicycle @ 5:04 PM Tue, Jan 15, 2008
Jones won't tell Wade anything about how much money he gives Garrett...these things get out...usually from a "source"...right or wrong, qualified or not, Jerrah loves Garrett and may be the first coach I can remember that Jerrah would really look long term at and feel comfortable...besides...Wade is much more suited standing in front of a Bob's Big Boy with a giant plastic hamburger in his hand...

Do not cry for Jones! He is a billionair. Garrett used the process to extract a few millions from Jones. That is OK. But I hope he will concentrate on his coaching at the end of the next season. I hope he will not go throught the process again next season. If Dallas does well again in the regular season, he should tell all interesting teams he is not interested in interviews for other head coaching jobs. New England offense coordinator did that this year. He should do that next season.
I said Jones should have hired Garrett last year. Wade is too old.
Posted by davej @ 5:13 PM Tue, Jan 15, 2008
Fact is that in ANY business, getting other job offers is the best way to get a raise.
As far as JG being a head coach - I've said it before and I'll say it again. The HC is not just a glorified offensive coordinator. Just like the best chemist is not necessarily qualified to be the CEO of a chemical company, the best coordinator is not necessarily qualified to be a HC.
The HC sets the tone and the attitude for the team. I like Jason as a HC because I see something in him in terms of his attitude which I believe makes him a leader of men.
The HC doesn't always have to be fiery as Tony Dungy has proved, but he has to be somebody that the team will follow and listen to and I see that in Jason.

LOL RAMS FAN. That's funny. These losers thought they were going to a SUPERBOWL. LOL

Garrett is still a great HC prospect because he is considered to be one of the smartest coaches in the league, along the lines of that guy in Pats country, THAT guy, THE Big Bill.
Of course most of us would disagree with that sentiment at this moment, but I will submit that this was Garrett's first run as a full time, full throttle OC, ALL responsibility on his shoulders. That being said he did quite well, and he is smart enough and quite obviously not too full of pride to admit he failed in December and was a larger piece of the failure last Sunday.
Now, all that being said, Jerry will not fire Wade, not this offseason anyhow. And Jerry's public admition that he will match ANY offer Garrett receives (and I'd be willing to bet he'll go no less than 10% over that highest offer) to keep Garrett in house, now reveals to us that Garrett is more than likely using the interviews to drive Jerry's payment plan higher.

Posted by Dave @ 5:20 PM Tue, Jan 15, 2008
Don't you Cowgirl mush heads see the writing on the wall??? Sparano and Garrett are gone. You are left with the mighty Wade Philips and his spectacular Post-Season resume! Way to go Jerry Jones! Way to ensure another 13 years of meaningless wins. You people are delusional if you think that Dallas can return to any sort of dominance that they had for a good 4 year run in the early 90's. Your history is weak, and your future is even that much more bleak. Romo is a Packer at heart, and TO is a virus. Enjoy failure kids, you deserve nothing less!

I get the leverage ploy to boost your salary here in Dallas, but Jason enough! You don't have to go to Atlanta and be like the bizillionth guy to work over Arthur Blank.
Also, so we likely lost the playoff game because you were interviewing for a pay raise? Thanks Jason. To me, that is the bigger "distraction." Not Romo in Mexico, but two coaches interviewing when they should have been game planning.
Posted by Bluestar @ 5:27 PM Tue, Jan 15, 2008
I think Jason is great but I doubt he is ready to be head coach of anybody. The Cowboys offense choked in the playoffs and his play calling was suspect at the end of the game. We probaly should have hired Norv and we would have had both a great OC and HC. Sparanos' stock should have also dropped after the dismal offensive line play in the second half.
Posted by RJS @ 5:28 PM Tue, Jan 15, 2008
What's with all the trolls today?
I swear these guys take greater pleasure from seeing the Cowboys lose than they ever would if their own miserable teams won.
I guess that's what being America's team will do. It's fine for them to be envious but do they really need to show the world how pathetic they are by polluting our blog/forum sites with their idiotic ramblings?

If you read the article the news is not necessarily that great:
"One league source said Garrett could be uncertain whether he is ready to become a head coach after just three years of coaching in the NFL. Another source speculated that Garrett could be headed to Atlanta to drive up the Ravens' offer."
So, he could still be in it for the Raven's and Falcon's. Also, the sentiment in Baltimore seems to be they really want Garrett. Also, the financial terms are already leaking, so the theory that Wade will be insulted and leave if Garrett ends up making more than the coach may actually happen. Arthur Blank has to know he is being used to drive the price up. I bet he drives the price way up just to pay Jerry back for meddling with Petrino.

blaming the coordinators is myopic...the GM is to blame for a lack of secondary players which was painfully exploited when necessary by She-li and his 2 and 3 WRs...the GM is to blame for never really fixing the O-line correctly...the Head Coach is to blame for taking his foot off the pedal and then not setting a tempo of intensity
that the playoffs mandate...and at the end of the day the players have to make a play or two...especially in a 21-17 game...

give Wade his suspenders and red checkered pants so he can pull off the Bob's Big Boy stunt; make Garrett the HC; Norm Chow as the OC; Rex Ryan as DC; draft CBs; a RB; a WR; and OL; fill in the above positions with affordable FAs or 1 expensive splash FA; and then let's roll. I've had enough of this pity party and blame game. Next week the Giants will be grease spots; we'll all attend a nice Superbowl party and be secretly thankful our team did not play Curley's eyes to Moe's fingers.

Sorry for beating a dead horse but can someone explain why Garret called the last play and why Romo threw the ball. It wasn't a Hail Mary situation or type of throw and Terry Glen was never open on the play. Even after the interception there was 9 seconds left...so why the suicide throw?

If you look at the replay they could have easily have gotten the 1st down and still would have had time left for 1 or 2 passes into the end zone. It doesn't make sense, it was like Garrett and Romo just gave up... It makes you question whether either one is good enough to win a Superbowl.
Posted by happy camper @ 6:26 PM Tue, Jan 15, 2008
Garrett, unlike the vast majority of us, knows what he's doing. He won't take any job, he'll take the right job. That may be the OC gig with Dallas, from his perspective. He's also probably self-aware enough to realize three years of experience is not really a long enough experience base to be tossed into the head coaching ranks. Is four years? I don't know, but it's better than three. Besides, the city of Baltimore is a pit.
Posted by Dean Martin's Liver @ 6:37 PM Tue, Jan 15, 2008
Butch Johnson...put your guns away...Garrett calls plays that have different options and "hot" reads depending on how the D aligns...Romo made the decision to go for broke on the play...as simple as that...bad decision in my book by a good young QB that had run for his life most of the 2nd half...

Jason Garrett would be gameplannin' the Cheeseheads if it weren't for Patrick "Freddie Mitchell" Crayton. Tony Sparano would be simplifying the snap count for Andre "Grape Ape" Gurode if it weren't for Patricia Cretin. Wade "Newt Gingrich" Phillips wouldn't be applying for the front yard statue position at Bob's Big Boy if it weren't for Patty Crapton. Tony Romeo would be watchin' Packer film with his hat on backwards if it weren't for that worthless, loudmouth, no class, fryin' pan hands, bug eyed, bowlegged, punkass #84. Patrick Crayturd must be banned from Texas Stadium in '08. He has disgraced himself and more importantly.....he has disgraced the great Cowboy organization. The mere thought of this insect wearing the star again makes me want to vomit. Jerrah needs to trade Crayturd to Bengals or Ravens. His big mouth/no talent act will fit right in with those lowly bottom feeders. Either that or make him roomates with Rowdy for all road games.

You forgot self-appointed "America's Team"...5 measly titles doesn't make you anyone's team except the poor bastardos who have to wake up every day in pitiful Dallas. Trolls you say? Miserable teams? I am part owner of the team from Title Town. We don't go around claiming we are the best, we know that we are. Most Championships (12 for those of you who don't know any history) in NFL history, and about to add another. The Pack would have beaten the Cowgirls by 20 if the Cowgirls could have held up their end of the bargain.

It was dumb play calling to throw hail mary passes into the end zone when we could have taken the first down and fired a few plays into the end zone from shorter range. Then again, if we would have scored more than 3 points in the entire second half it might not have come down to that last desperate minute. Sparano and Garrett can both go. Wade has been around a long time and knows quite a few good coaches to work with him and the talent the Cowboys have.
