Garrett's plan

1:08 PM Tue, Jan 15, 2008 |
Albert Breer   E-mail   News tips

According to ESPN's John Clayton, the plan Cowboys offensive coordinator Jason Garrett has presented the Ravens has former Dolphins assistants Cam Cameron and Dom Capers going with him to Baltimore as offensive and defensive coordinators, respectively.

This is a mixed bag for Dallas. On one end, it means that a staff that figures to be tattered when the smoke clears will not be raided too extensively by the new Baltimore regime. But another side to it is that if Garrett does go to Baltimore, and Tony Sparano to Miami, Cameron likely would've been a prime candidate to become OC in Dallas.

Cameron was the Chargers' offensive coordinator, while Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips served as DC in San Diego from 2004-06. Cameron's connection to Garrett is through Norv Turner. Cameron was the Redskins quarterbacks coach from 1994-96 under Turner and, as such, runs a similar offensive system to Garrett.

That would probably leave receivers coach Ray Sherman as the top candidate for the offensive coordinator position. Sherman was the Steelers offensive coordinator in 1998, taking over for Chan Gailey there, and the Vikings OC in 1999, where he took the reins from Brian Billick. Sherman resigned after being replaced by Sherman Lewis in Minnesota, and offered a position as receivers coach, after the '99 season.

Quarterbacks coach Wade Wilson could be another candidate. He brings eight years of experience as a position coach, four in Dallas (2000-02, 2007) and three in Chicago (2004-06.)

So the worthless POS Garrett is trying to screw us over twice. Jerry should FIRE him right now and move to get Cameron in Dallas first. I have had ENOUGH of Garrett and the damage he has inflicted on this team the past two weeks.

Posted by Bernardo @ 1:27 PM Tue, Jan 15, 2008

The loss on the coordinators could be HUGE. I just hope that whomever comes in next has the creativity that Garret had.

Posted by Bill In DC @ 1:29 PM Tue, Jan 15, 2008

Would suprise me if Cameron makes that move when he could be in Dallas with better personnel, a Coach he's very familiar with, etc. Just because Garrett says his plan is to bring Cameron with him doesn't mean Cameron is on board or that it will happen.

Posted by PaulC @ 1:32 PM Tue, Jan 15, 2008

I know who will design the offense and call plays next year. The only question is will Jerry do it from the pressbox or down on the sideline, standing in front of Wade. Jerry's wet dream finally comes true. Football guy!

Posted by KC IN DALLAS @ 1:33 PM Tue, Jan 15, 2008

I AGREE WITH BILL. CAMERON WOULD BE A FOOL TO PASS UP DALLAS FOR BALTIMORE. IT'S A NO BRAINER FOR HIM. BUT THEN AGAIN IF GARRETT CAN PASS IT UP NOTHINGS IMPOSSIBLE....?

Posted by Bill In DC @ 1:33 PM Tue, Jan 15, 2008

I think people are overstating the OC. Sure, it would not be good to lose both, but come on, they can be replaced and it has more to do with the players than the coaches. I don't expect that Dallas' offense falls apart if Garrett and Sparano leave.

Didn't San Diego lose both OC and DC last year and they're further in the playoffs than they got last year?

If Jerry thought that he should have hired Garrett as head coach last year. I think he made the right move.

Posted by Bill In DC @ 1:37 PM Tue, Jan 15, 2008

KC

Garrett isn't a fired HC and he's looking at being a HC. I bet he fails in Balt and gets fired after 2-3 years. Baltimore is a disaster of a franchise waiting to happen, aging expensive defense, no QB, no WR, No RB, best O linemen are old and retiring. It's a total rebuilding job and whoever coaches there now will be branded a failure, regardless of actual talent. I suspect that when Wade retires in 2-3 years, Garrett will be looking for a job.

Posted by Rich Kotite @ 1:37 PM Tue, Jan 15, 2008

Good coaching is overrated.

Posted by Joe Kuharich @ 1:42 PM Tue, Jan 15, 2008

Rich Kotite has a good point!

Posted by Kirk @ 1:49 PM Tue, Jan 15, 2008

I hope this is all a dream. First, we lose a game we should have won.

Now, we're talking already about losing our O-Coordinator, Key offensive coach, young up and coming db coach and, according to Albert, a bunch of retreads. Wade, Wade, Sherman as OC.

Jerry, what the heck! Who is watching the fort. Is all of this worth to keep Wade? I'm in pain enough...this is causing me extended suffering. Please stop this insanity.

Posted by Bobby Petrino @ 2:00 PM Tue, Jan 15, 2008

I'm not available now but I should be ready to go about mid-season. Just let me know.

Posted by Get the hell out Garrett @ 2:01 PM Tue, Jan 15, 2008

THIS JUST FURTHER PROVES THAT GARRETT DID NOT HAVE HIS MIND ON THE COWBOY GAME.

HELL, IT IS TO HIS ADVANTAGE THAT THE BOYS LOST SO HE CAN GO AHEAD AND ACCEPT THE HC JOB AND GET HIS STAFF TOGETHER BEFORE SOME OTHER TEAM HIRES CAMERON AND OTHERS.

NOT SUGGESTING HE IS THAT LOW, BUT THIS GUY IS REALLY SHOWING OUT HIS ASS TO NOT ONLY LEAVE FOR A BAD JOB BUT TO TAKE HIS OBVIOUS REPLACEMENT IN CAMERON WITH HIM.

JERRY, YOU GAVE THIS GUY A BIG BREAK AND NOW HE IS SCREWING YOU TO THE WALL. ONE BIG CONSULATION HOWEVER, THIS GUY HAS NO CREDENTIALS TO SUGGEST HE CAN BE A GOOD HEAD COACH. THE RAVENS ARE GOING TO FIND THAT OUT LONG BEFORE THE NEXT SEASON ENDS AND THIS GUY IS GOING TO BE ON THE STREET. AT THE END OF THE SEASON HE WASN'T EVEN A GOOD OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR BECAUSE THE LEAGUES DEFENSIVE COORDINATORS HAD CAUGHT UP WITH HIM. NOT THAT IT WAS A DIFFICULT TASK. ANY OC WHO CALLS A RUN ON 2ND AND 10 100% OF THE TIME AFTER A FAILED FIRST DOWN PASS ISN'T THAT HARD TO CATCH UP WITH.

Posted by So bitter! @ 2:09 PM Tue, Jan 15, 2008

I'm so bitter! I place primary blame for the loss on Garrett and Sparano. Their concerns were not with the game but with their head coaching futures. The team was obviously not focused and not well coached on Sunday. Why are coaches so anxious to get out of Valley Ranch? It seems like they can't get out fast enough. Now Ireland is on his way to fetch Sparano to Miami! This sucks.

Posted by realdeal @ 2:11 PM Tue, Jan 15, 2008

Garrett is a quality coach and I'd hate losing him. In the end, he might not leave..if Jerry promises to make him head coach after Wade Phillips...why not wait another year or two and move into a job with a franchise QB?

Posted by Roy @ 2:13 PM Tue, Jan 15, 2008

If Sparano is good enough as a head coach for Miami, he should be good enough for Cowboys. After all we all know Bill Parcells knows more than Jerry. They shoul promote Sparano and get rid of Wade, Other wise we would all be back next year on this page and ask the same question should Wade stay or go? He can not take this team to the next level. He already has proven that

Posted by Brandon B @ 2:14 PM Tue, Jan 15, 2008

Bill in DC is 100% correct. To start with, Garrett needs a QB, RB, 2 WR, and probably a TE. It isn't easy to replace ALL of your skill position on offense. Looking at that, Cameron would be silly to take that job over the Cowboys OC position, but I'm afraid all of this is a done deal. Garrett wouldn't be proposing names without having already talked to the coaches. Cameron has got to be on board with this already.

For those of you saying the OC is not that important, look back to just 2006 with BP. Someone has to call the plays and you either get good, aggressive play calling or you get the Yawn play with BP.

Dallas needs someone like Garrett, Cameron, or Payton (without the BP conservative collar). Billick suddenly finds himself available...

Posted by Creth Davis @ 2:18 PM Tue, Jan 15, 2008

just because either I'm a worthless hill-billy or you were so excited writing this that you worded the first sentence incorrectly. what do you mean to say when you type, "Jason Garrett has presented the Ravens has former Dolphins...??"

Posted by PaulC @ 2:25 PM Tue, Jan 15, 2008

The Ticket is reporting that the Ravens are preventing Garrett from keeping in contact with the Cowboys while he is in Baltimore today. What the he l l????? How can they keep GARRETT'S NFL EMPLOYER from speaking with him? Mind you, I'm ready to kick Garrett out of town right now. But it says everything about Jerry if he is being rolled over and HUMILIATED like this and doing nothing about it. What a laughingstock, if true.

Posted by JV @ 2:26 PM Tue, Jan 15, 2008

We should have just hired Norv Turner!!

Posted by Jason @ 2:26 PM Tue, Jan 15, 2008

Brandon - I like the Billick idea. He was considered an offensive genius when he was with the Viking's as OC. Like Mike Martz, I think he'd like to get another shot at the head spot. Taking the reins of a loaded Dallas offense for a season or two might be the ticket to getting him back as a head coach in the league.

Also, I imagine there are plenty of Sean Payton's and Jason Garrett's out there. Jerry did pretty good last offseason. Hell, until Sunday we all thought he was a freaking genius. So, there's hope .

Posted by Jason @ 2:35 PM Tue, Jan 15, 2008

I'm pissed because other posters are correct: our coaches did not have their minds on the game, they were exploiting a great season for personal gain. Now that being said, if any of them are offered head coaching they have to take it. Opportunities just don't come around that often. If Garrett doesn't take this while he's hot, whose to say Romo doesn't get injured in week one next year and suddenly he's not the hot coordinator anymore. It's just business. Which is why we should have the names of the best position coaches who are ready to move up and steal them from our organizations. That is why you interview more than one coach for head coach and coordinator positions - to pick the candidate's brain about other qualified position coaches in the league.

Posted by RP in Erath Co @ 2:39 PM Tue, Jan 15, 2008

You guys bashing Garrett make me laugh. It's a good thing you don't represent the entire fanbase. If you did, every coach would leave town after one season.

He has an opportunity in front of him. How many of you would turn down a promotion, more money, prestige, and autonomy in your job?

I, too, hope he stays. He's still a couple of years away from really being ready, and I'd hate to see him fail in a place where he'd have a tough time to begin with. But if he goes, I wish him luck. I'll be both a Ravens and a Cowboy fan.

Posted by Anthony @ 3:00 PM Tue, Jan 15, 2008

If there is any coach who wants to leave the Cowboys let him go. I don't care if Jason Garrett leaves because he froze up calling horrible plays. We didn't run a trick play all year, I mean not even a simple flea flicker. We have so much talent on offense most O.C.'s currently in the league could do well. Cam Cameron will be a better fit because he will use that massive O-line and get T.O. and Witten the ball. Cam is more experienced and may have at least one trick play.

All I can say is that with Garrett's lack of any kind of loyalty, I hope he fails miserably if he goes to Baltimore.

Posted by L.J. @ 3:32 PM Tue, Jan 15, 2008

I would speculate that Rams Fan 2008 is a Cowboy hater, rather than a Ram fan.

Jerry Jones' loyalty to Wade, while commendable, is going to cost the Cowboys wins next season.

It is sad, that so many good athletes were not properly coached. Prime time coaching, requires both preparation, and in-game adjusting. Both were not present during the final third of the season.

It hugh oportunity was missed.

If you will replace Ram's fan's rants with the voice of the French soldier at the top of the castle at the beginning of Monty Python and the Holy Grail, I think you will get a kick out of all of his posts...for some reason, it just clicks.

But seriously folks...opportunities will be acted on by everyone who operates in their own self-interest. Follow the money and it comes in buckets in this league.

Posted by John @ 4:11 PM Tue, Jan 15, 2008

Well I have seen what Wade Phillips can do and I am not impressed. This team got where it did during the regular season because of the offense. This was not a great defense and this team was rarely intense when it needed to be. As far as I am concerned I have seen enough from Phillips. Fire him and bring on Garrett and his plan here in Dallas.

One name that no one is mentioning, but I am sure Jerry has stashed away in his mind if something where to happen.

Ken Zampese (that's right Ernie's son) He certainly has the credentials, working with Mike Martz on the passing game in St. Louis and working with Carson Palmer in Cincy since he came into the league. Plus you know he has the ability to call plays, because his dad could do it so darn well
